Fred Dierden was one of Canada’s best half backs in the 1920s, representing All Canada on a 1924 tour of Australia and a year later in a pair of international matches against USA. He was the only player selected to play for Canada in both 1924 and 1925. As noted in a 1924 Australian program, Dierden was “the best right or centre half in Canada.” He was a regular all-star selection at right half in the inter-city Carls-Rite Cup competition from 1921 to 1925. He also represented Toronto all-stars against a touring side from England in 1926. In 1922, he helped Toronto Ulster United FC reach the Dominion Cup final at home, but the side hobbled by injuries couldn’t beat Calgary Hillhurst FC to lift the Connaught Cup. In 1926, Dierden helped Willys-Overland win the Ontario Cup and then reach the semi-finals of the Connaught Series playdowns.
