NEWSTED, Doris “Jean” 1936 ~ 2018 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Doris “Jean” Newsted at St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose at the age of 86 years. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her husband Norman of 29 years; and children Marilyn (Ken), Carolyn (Wayne), Ed (Yvonne), Laura (Scot) and Rob (Lori Anne); 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Jean was predeceased by parents Arthur and Laura; two husbands Mervin, and Bob; and her five brothers Archie, Willard, Walt, Jim and George Philips, most who resided in the Arbutus district in the Rocky Mountain House area, the community of her youth. A woman of many talents, she instilled a strong work ethic in all her kids and grandkids. Family gatherings were her joy to organize and provide copious quantities of foods. She took pride, especially in her retirement years, in her flower and vegetable gardens, quilts and gopher hunting on the farm at New Norway. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She requested no service. There will be an internment of her urn at Rocky Mountain House at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice. Q.

How does the Battle River Community Foundation decide how much to grant each year?

A.

Canada Revenue dictates a minimum of 3.5% of our endowments be granted each year. The capital preservation of the funds is closely monitored by the BRCF to ensure the funds never become eroded, while granting as much as possible to the worthwhile causes.
