Rooting up the family By Lori Larsen
Searching your family tree can lead to answered questions, discovering exciting information or even uprooting some interesting or not so interesting facts. Genealogy is the record of a person’s, group’s or family’s descent from ancestors, in short, their lineage or pedigree. The Camrose Branch of the Alberta Genealogical Society is hosting Pat Ryan, a certified genealogist in her presentation Who’s Your Momma, at the Camrose Library (downstairs meeting room) on Thursday June 9 at 7 p.m. Using a humourous approach, Pat engages her attendees in an approximately hour long workshop on genealogy and searching family history.
Pat Ryan
“Every single attendee will be anxious to rush home with new skills that will break down some brick walls,” said Pat. “I highly recommend this for all skill levels. And it’s fun.” Pat has presented, not only across Canada, but as far away as Scotland. She is a first generation Canadian. Her father was born in Scotland and her mother was born in the United States of America. She has completed the Saskatchewan Genealogy Society’s Certification Courses and is a member of the Association of Professional Genealogists as well as a founding member of the College of Certified Saskatchewan Genealogists. She is also a member in genealogy societies throughout the world. Pat teaches in Regina and offers online classes allowing anyone, anywhere to participate in digging up their roots no matter where they live. Joseph James Hayduk June 4, 1934 ~ June 8, 2015 If roses grow in Heaven Lord, please pick a bunch for me. Place them in my Father’s arms And tell him they’re from me. Tell him that I love him and miss him, And when he turns to smile, Place a kiss upon his cheek And hold him for awhile. Because remembering him is easy, I do it every day, But there’s an ache within my heart That will never go away. Canada Day celebration plans are beginning to spark By Murray Green
Sparks are starting to fly as plans for the Canada Day celebrations shift into high gear for July 1. This year will commemorate the 175th anniversary of the birth of Sir Wilfred Laurier, the 175th anniversary of the election of Baldwin and Lafontaine, Leaders for Responsible Government, the 150th anniversary of the
Fenian Raids and the main focus will be on the 100th year of Canadian Women’s Suffrage. Opening ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. followed by entertainment, activities and a yard sale. The Mirror Lake Express train will provide rides, and Odin’s Ravens Viking Group will be setting up camp on site and providing demonstrations.
There is also a new life size Snakes and Ladders game, stilt walker demonstrations and hands on training, the cadets will be operating a dunk tank and there will be lots of carnival games for 25 cents per play and prizes for all players. There will also be several food vendors and demonstrations by the museum. The character of “Mrs. Bashaw”
will reenact the Women’s Suffrage movement throughout the day. “I am looking forward to a fun filled day for the whole family,” said Jane CherryLemire, committee chair. Unfortunately, there will not be a breakfast this year, but a full list of entertainment, events and activities will be released once they have been finalized.
The committee is looking for community sponsorship and volunteers, which are needed for the event. “I truly appreciate all of the community support that we receive for this event,” said Cherry-Lemire. Should you have any interest in becoming a supporter or volunteer, contact Jane Cherry-Lemire at 780672-9949.
