The CAMROSE BOOSTER, September 15, 2015 – Page 29
Florence Elizabeth “Beth” Greenwood (nee Johnston) November 16, 1929 – September 11, 2015 Florence “Beth” Greenwood passed away peacefully in the early hours of September 11, 2015 at the age of 85 years. Being a descendant of one of Alberta’s pioneer families, Beth was born at Viking Hospital, the second child of five children, to the late William Dodds Johnston and his wife Florence (nee Juett) Johnston. She was married at the age of 16 and began a farm life with Dave near Kinsella where they raised their six children. The constant stream of friends and family prompted her description of the farm as “grand central station”. In 1973, a move to Camrose with the two youngest children brought a new career at Bethany Nursing Home and many new friends made with her warmth and sense of humor. Retirement with Dave was full of many happy years of motorhome trips to Fairmont Hot Springs and other local areas. Beth faced many health issues with both determination and a realistic focus. Surviving cancer, a broken pelvis and loss of her sight were just a few of life’s challenges. Her spirit of overcoming challenges and positively facing life’s experiences is to be admired. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the health professionals and staff at St. Mary’s Hospital, Camrose. Left to cherish her memory are her children Dodds Greenwood of Holden, Blaine (Dee) of Lethbridge, Glen (Barb) of Irma, Leone (Gordon) Thurston of Irma, Coreen Drescher (Daniel Speirs) of Calgary, and Linda (Kevin) Stang of Edmonton; 19 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Florence was predeceased by her husband Dave; parents William and Florence Johnston; two brothers William Johnston and Raymond Johnston; and two sisters Yvonne Greenwood and Wyonne White. A Celebration of Beth’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2015 from Burgar Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brian Hunter officiating. Inurnment will take place in Valleyview Cemetery, Camrose. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Canadian Cancer Society, or to the health charity of one’s choice. Peppy was born near Prince Albert, SK on May 14, 1932. He was given the nickname Peppy by his mother because he was full of pep and vinegar. Even back then, he couldn’t sit idle for long. He only had a grade three education and left home at the young age of 11, but with that, he set off into the real world of hard work and his life’s journey. In his 20s, Peppy moved to Edmonton with his new wife Joan. Soon there were four children: two sons Albert and Mick; and two daughters Yvonne and Terry. In the ’60s, Peppy started his first company. With $100 in his pocket, he opened “Peppy’s Transport”. He built a fleet of eight trucks, in which he took great pride. Sadly, with the economic crash of the ’80s he lost everything. With his hard work and drive, he started working with “Twin City Towing” until he had enough money to buy his own tow truck. In 2000, Peppy retired in his 70s and moved to Tofield. He continued working with his tow truck and a new business of felling trees. He made a lot of new friends and before long, he was known to all for “Peppy’s Firewood”. He made a name for himself by having the best quality firewood around. As busy as Peppy always was, he was never too busy to visit with or help his friends and neighbors. Peppy was predeceased by his daughter Yvonne. He is survived by his three children Albert Jr., Mick and Terry. Peppy will be very sadly missed by all his many friends and neighbors. A funeral service was held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Tofield Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ken Stumph officiating. Interment followed at Tofield Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made directly to the charity of one’s choice.
