Nursing students receive emergency training

University of Alberta nursing students in Camrose learned about emergency response in a mass casualty incident simulation experience on Nov. 18. Patient Cathy Teng, left, is examined by fellow students Grace Court, Kirsten Waddell and Samantha Brausen. Students had to determine the number and severity of patients and provide treatment care.

Mass casualty incident victim Alyssa Maripain is helped off a staircase by Camrose EMS member Brandon Erickson in an exercise to teach University of Alberta nursing students about emergency procedures at the Richard Husfloen Building in Camrose. Students learned how critical all team members must work together so that an accurate systematic physical assessment can be completed and treatment priorities can be established quickly. The training exercise provided the students with a real life incident to understand each of the roles in a trauma situation. U of A students who train in Camrose will work in rural hospitals upon completion of the two year after degree program.

Camrose EMS officers Mark Ushko and Brandon Erickson show first and second year nursing students how to apply a neck brace to patient Gavin Melcher after a barbecue exploded in a mock disaster for nursing student training.

Nursing program instructor Tara Enzenauer explains the procedures to help patient Alyssa Maripain, who lost her leg in the explosion accident, to students Ayn Grant and Cassandria Smith.

First year nursing student and disaster training patient Ying Tsay, is monitored by Cassandria Smith after he suffered a concussion in the explosion.
