Hospice hike raises $6,000 By Dan Jensen
The Hospice Society of Camrose and District used a hike on Camrose trails May 4 to raise more than $6,000 for its ever growing volunteer program and education sessions. “Approximately 60 hikers came out to join the hike in spite of the cool, rainy day,” said palliative care nurse consultant Pam Cummer. “We concluded the afternoon with a barbecue provided by the society board members. Hamburgers were generously donated by the Drever family.” The hike was one of many supported by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association in centres across Canada as a way of creating awareness about the need for hospice palliative care in our communities. The hike is always held on the first Sunday of May, which marks the beginning of Hospice Palliative Care Week. This year the theme of the week of May 4 to 10 was “Busting the Myths about Hospice Palliative Care.” The Hospice Society of Camrose and District vhas the ultimate goal of having a free-standing hospice. More information about the society and upcoming events is available at the website www.camrosehospice.org.
