Former Camrose resident Chris Morgan, a junior at Montana Tech, The University of Montana, was one of a select few to receive a prestigious new scholarship and internship from Intertek, a leading provider of quality and safety solutions for a wide range of industries around the world. The new program, launched in January, was tailored to undergraduate students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the United States and Canada. The scholarship winners received an award of up to $10,000 USD and paired with an internship at an Intertek office. The program, designed to help inspire students to pursue careers in engineering, was named the number one unique scholarship to apply for in 2014. Chris was born and raised in Camrose and moved to Edmonton in August 2011, where he attended the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) and received his technical diploma in Petroleum Engineering in May 2013. He currently resides in Butte, Montana, where he attends Montana Tech, The University of Montana. He is in the process of completing his third of fourand-a-half years, majoring in Petroleum Engineering. He will be interning at the Edmonton office. In the creation of this new scholarship and internship program, Intertek intends to promote STEM education and to help inspire students to pursue careers in engineering. Additionally, two of the five scholarships were awarded to female candidates, promoting women’s advancement in engineering. The students were selected by a committee of Intertek team members from applications across the United States and Canada. Continued on page 40

Hazel Viola Dingman Hazel Dingman of Camrose, AB, formerly of Ohaton, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at the age of 87 years. Hazel was the sixth of eleven children born in the Berke farm home one mile north of Kelsey, AB. She grew up in the 1930s, learning how to cook and bake at a young age, utilizing the farm’s milk, cream, butter, eggs and meat. It was a necessity to have a large garden, and picking wild berries was a family outing. Her family were all musical – Mom could play a harmonica and button accordian. She learned how to sew and quilt. This lifestyle continued when she married Harold Dingman, a farmer, of the Albury District on November 5, 1947. They were blessed with eight children – four nurse daughters and four farmer sons. She absolutely loved the everyday chores of farm life while raising the family. For years she ran her children to school sports, ball, hockey, Explorers, CGIT, Tyro, ballet, gun club, Cubs, Scouts, 4-H and swimming lessons. She taught Sunday School at Kelsey United Church, was CGIT (Canadian Girls in Training) leader for 12 years, belonged to UCW (United Church Women), was a charter member of Heatherbrae Women’s Institute and was employed for eight years at Camrose Co-op. For 14 winters, she and Harold enjoyed their Arizona home. Summer months was a time of family fun at Pigeon Lake. All but Mom could water ski! Our fun continued on into the evening with potato salad, green jelly salad, roasted hot dogs, beans and marshmallows with a huge bonfire at the water’s edge. Also, the family enjoyed many picnics and ballgames at the Dingman grounds at Dried Meat Lake. Hazel always had a song to sing, a beautiful smile and a laugh ready to burst. She loved and supported her family, grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her coffee pot was always on for a good visit and she would serve homemade cake, cookies, bread and jam. She always had two dozen cupcakes and a card ready for each birthday. After Harold’s death in 1999, she transitioned to the Hilltop home of daughter Berneice, just one mile south of the family farm. In her last eight years with the crippling effects of R.A. and tumor removal in the spinal cord, she had the adept assistance and consistant, compassionate care from Berneice and professional guidance from Suzanne Nichol and the Home Care Team. Her last three months of declining health were under the care of Dr. Peters and staff at the Louise Jensen Care Centre. Hazel will be deeply missed and forever remembered by her children Veronica Oko, Elizabeth (Mike) Makoloski, Bob Dingman, Stanley (Deanna) Dingman, Florence (John) Boschman, Berneice Dingman and John (Yolanda) Dingman; 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren James (Lori) – Ethan and Logan, Kelly – Hayley and Jorja, Donna (Terry) – Ty and Kayla, Darren (Carla) – Julia, Joshua and Jaxon, Corey, Travis, Bill (Jenniel) – Olivia and Ezekiel, Brad (Latisha) – Michael and Claire, Meghan, Whitney (Josh), Aimee (Dorian) – baby in waiting, Daniel, Sarah (Ryan), Christina (Lee), Dillon, Dakota, Cassandra and Dustin; and three stepgrandchildren Kim (Rob), Kenney (Lindsay) and Chad (Karley). Hazel is survived by her siblings Vida Innes of Camrose, Lois Brockhoff of Camrose, Jessie Hall of Camrose and Randal Berke of Calgary. Hazel was predeceased by her parents Herman and Myrtle Berke; her husband Harold; son Charles Dingman; daughter-inlaw Gail; son-in-law David Oko; grandson Terry Oko; and siblings Ellen, Lloyd, Howard, Bessie, Bernard and Victor. A funeral service was held on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. from Camrose United Church (4829-50 Street, Camrose, AB) with Mary Ann Pastuck officiating.
