Morris Harold Torhjelm
Nolan William Kerr
Morris Harold Torhjelm, eldest son of Harold and Blanche Torhjelm, was born on September 9, 1923 in Meeting Creek, AB. Suddenly, on November 14, 2011, he went to be with the Lord at t he age of 8 8 years and two months. He grew up in Meeting Creek on the family farm. He met h is wife Olive Bawden and they were married on December 22, 1949. He attended school at Little Rock and Prairie Bible Institute at T hree Hills. While there, he worked in the heating plant keeping the boilers going with coal which heated the whole campus. They also watched for spontaneous combustion of t he coal pile so it wouldn’t catch on fire, always ready with the water hose to douse the flames. He also sang in a quartet at Sunday morning church services on the radio while at Prairie. He loved to be with his uncles Edward, Lawrence and Hugo who lived nearby. On hot summer nights, they would sleep on the veranda under the stars. His aunts and uncles brought him to church which was in the Swedish language. His reading in the Swedish Bible brought snickers from the other children. He was a g reat little entrepreneur, selling gopher tails and crows’ eggs. They lived in Edmonton and Red Deer where Morris worked at Ma cleods, Eaton’s Company and Deerhome. They returned to Meeting Creek where they bought his Uncle Edward’s farm in 1965. In 1968, Morris took a nursing assistant course, then joined the Rosehaven Care Centre in Camrose where he enjoyed working with the residents and staff until he r etired. He also did a bit of farming on the side. Over the years and into retirement, Morris and Olive enjoyed taking their music to retirement lodges, churches and many other occasions. He is survived by his wife Olive; children Val and Roger (Liz); three grandchildren Nicole, Russell and Jonathan; two greatgrandchildren Randy and Reece; two brothers James (Bette) and Lorne (Carol); three sisters Velma (Ronald) Vasselin, Marilyn (John) Giesbrecht and LaVae Swanson; sister-in-law Carolyn; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents; his brother Gerald in 1998; and three infant siblings in 1932, 1934 and 1942. The family thanks everyone for the support shown through prayer, attendance at the service and expressions of sympathy. A funeral service was held at 1: 00 p.m., Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Weber’s Mount Pleasant Chapel. Interment has taken place at V alleyview Cemetery, Camrose.
