Camrose City council isn’t going to be in a big hurry to approve the 2014 municipal operating budget. Council has given formal approval to a process that will allow it to adopt an interim budget before the end of the year and continue with budget deliberations throughout the month of January. The Municipal Government Act requires that council have an operating budget by the end of each year. “Council can pass an operating budget, or, alternatively, it can pass an interim budget,” said City manager Damian Herle in a report to council Nov. 12. “The interim budget process, in reality, sets council budget duties over to early in the next calendar year. Under the interim budget process, an operating budget needs to be approved by the end of December and any budget adjustments need to occur early in the year, as council is required to set property tax rates by early May.” Continued on page 7
