Kathleen “Kay” Charlotte Reist Kathleen “Kay” Charlotte Reist of Camrose, formerly of Daysland, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the age of 83 years. Kathleen Charlotte Reist (nee Cole) was born January 15, 1930 in Dodsland, Saskachewan, and was raised near Coleville Saskatchewan during the Great Depression. At 16, Kay followed her sisters Betty and Bernice to Edmonton to finish high school and to help care for her Grandma Conquest (The Red Cross Lady). She soon met Harvey Reist, a pre-med student from Wetaskiwin, and they married in 1951. Gary was born in 1952 and the new family moved to Daysland in 1955. While Harvey practiced medicine, Kay raised her family with great love, encouragement and devotion. They welcomed three more children; Ronald was born in 1956, Bradley in 1960 and Lorene in 1962. A huge believer in education, Kay pushed and availed her children the opportunities to pursue their interests. While focusing her time on her children and their activities, Kathleen was also dedicated to volunteering in her community. She held leadership positions in the United Church Women’s Assn., CGIT, the Agricultural Society, the Hospital Auxiliary, Daysland School Board, and the Aging in Place Society. In the latter foundation, Kathleen was instrumental in the development and naming of “Providence House”. Having been a proud and supportive mother, Kay spent her last years being an equally amazing grandmother; spoiling and doting and Layne, Miranda, Jared, Chelsey, Jenna, Addison and Sidney. In 2001, the Reist family met in Emerald Lake to celebrate Kay and Harvey’s 50th anniversary. While Kay was already showing signs of illness, the following few years proved to be devastating as dementia settled in. Kay fought as hard as humanly possible, but faced with a particularly fast moving form of Alzheimer’s disease, she soon required a hospital setting to meet her needs. Kay will be lovingly remembered by her children Gary (Marietta) of Edmonton, Ron (Veronica) of Olds, Bradley (Carolina) of Cranbrook, BC, and Lorene Reist of Toronto, ON; eight grandchildren Layne (Vicky) Cunningham, Miranda (Colin) Gustafson, Jared (Meaghan) Chelsey, Jenna ( Marcus) Weinkauf, Addison and Sidney; eight great-grandchildren; one brother Ron Cole of Coalhurst, AB; two sisters Joan (Bill) Adair of Ladysmith, BC, and Linda (Dave) Miller of Coleville, SK; sister-in-law Beatrice Bolen; and brother-inlaw Art Stengal. Kay was predeceased by her husband Dr. Harvey Allan Reist; one brother Les Cole; three sisters Betty Aucoin, Mary Cole and Bernice Smith; sister-in-law Donna Stengal; and brother-in-law George Bolen. A Funeral Service will be held on 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 5, 2013 from Daysland Knox Church with Rev. Alan Richards officiating. Private Family inurnment will take place in Daysland Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to join the family for fellowship and refreshments at Daysland Community Hall immediately following the service. If family and friends so desire, memorial contributions are gratefully accepted to the Alzheimer’s Society. To send condolences please visit www.burgarfuneralhome.com.

There are just not enough words to say thank you to all the people who supported our family through a very difficult time in our lives. I was trying to put words in individual thank you cards and realized it would be an insurmountable job because there were so many of you who were here for us. First of all, thank you to the 911 operator Howard Bouck who kept me sane until the EMS and Fire August 2, 1952 – August 30, 2013 Department arrived. While waiting for the emergency responders to arrive, our neighbour and close friend Enos Lamprecht, along with his grandson Braeden Korchinski, came by to borrow a truck. A very special thank you to Enos as he stayed with Howard and also to Braeden for being my right hand while the EMS did their job. Thank you to the team of emergency responders for organizing STARS to land on our property and stabilize Howard to be ready for transport to the U of A Hospital. A big thank you to the doctors and nurses at the Firefighters’ Burn Unit in Edmonton who gave such great care to Howard. He also wanted me to go buy them all coffee. Karmyn Johnson, thank you for coming immediately and taking me to the hospital, and for all the extras you continue to do. Thank you to Pastor Ed for spending that first evening with the family, and to Barry and Shannon DeMaere for meeting us there and supporting us through those difficult days. Thank you to Bev and Sheri for coming and praying with us and Howard as he went through his surgeries, and to Ron and Leanne Bouck for looking after so many details for me throughout this whole ordeal. Thank you to my sons Travis and Tyler for dropping everything to come and stand together as we waited for the doctors and many surgeries. Thank you to Carly and Asa for holding things together on the home front so they would not have worry about anything at home. It was such a blessing when both Carly and Asa were able to join us. During Howard’s six weeks in the hospital, we were blessed by so many of our friends, families, community and church families. Many of you sent meals, gave us gift cards, prayed unceasingly for us, and looked after Erik and Anders so their parents could be at the hospital with us. I can’t thank the 150 people enough who came out to the farm on August 10 to get all Howard’s projects done that he never got to finish. A special thank you to the businesses that donated supplies for those projects and who also offered their own time. That was a powerful day, just seeing you all there as you showed us how much you were all pulling for Howard, and we could see the kind of man he was to others. To see each of you drive up our driveway, to take a whole day and generously give of yourselves was overwhelming. To Travis and Asa and all the others who did the prep work prior to that day, a big thank you is extended. There were many others who gave generously for that day to be a success. I would love to list each of you separately, but am afraid I might miss some of you … I know you know who you are. There were 20 more days God gave us with Howard after that work day. Days that I will always remember. The best day was when Howard got the speaking piece put on his ventilator that allowed us to hear his voice. We could hear him actually speak the words, “I love you”; words we will always cherish. Tyler and Carly were unable to be with us for this whole journey due to hockey season starting, but Ty had set up an iPad and we could Facetime them so they could see and talk to Howard. It was very difficult for them to be away, but they also knew it was what Howard wanted. On August 30, 2013, Howard passed away after his fourth surgery. Through all this, I have always felt the hand of the Lord taking care of us. Howard’s life was celebrated by about 1,000 people – what does that say? What a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, cousin and friend he was. He touched many lives over his short 61 years, and I can only say for me and my family, he will be missed so much. A big thank you to our neighbours and friends who have so willingly been here for the harvest and any other things we have needed. Thank you to all of you who stood by us and with us as we have gone through and will continue to go through the tremendous loss of this great man. – Phyllis Bouck
