ho would have thought that technology would grow to such heights that learning can take place via the internet. I am not talking about the distance learning programs that we are well accustomed to. SOCIAL MEDIA ETIQUETTE

S

Why Some People Aren't Getting Hired

ocial networking through sites like Facebook and Twitter has completely changed the way we interact with one another and the way you conduct yourself through your social media accounts is a direct reflection of who you really are. You‟ve worked hard to position yourself for a great position with the company of your dreams. You‟ve gotten good grades, you have great internship experience and you‟ve demonstrated great leadership on campus. All this can be undone in a few keystrokes if you‟re not careful. In today‟s hi-tech world, potential employers use your social network profiles to validate your judgment and credibility as a candidate for jobs they‟re posting. Thus it‟s very important to understand personal etiquette on Social Media. Having said that let me share 5 Do‟s and Don‟ts on social media. Offer information of value. Don't talk just about yourself and yourself. You end up looking so selfish and mean. Some tech savvy HR managers or recruiters screen what the interested applicants tweeted mostly about or posted- That is meant to gauge their level of passion in what they had applied for and to also check who they really are! Make sure you impress! A research done in the U.S showed that twitter users donate to charities more than others; why? It‟s because on Twitter; tweeps do share links, Re-tweet nice links and pass the vibe around. Seriously this holds water because if you read nice articles why not share it with others? It doesn‟t cost you anything! Pass the knowledge. We also checked what the interested applicants tweeted mostly about or posted- This was to gauge their level of passion in what they had applied for and to also check who they really are. Be accessible. Your friends want to be heard. And the only way you can prove you are there is by listening and responding. Make it part of your strategy to address inquiries, complaints and compliments found online. A simple click on the LIKE button shows at least there‟s someone there! People also pass a lot of vacancies online so be around to check them out. To those who are not very active- the HR may conclude that you aren‟t really social & keep a lot to themselves. Thus unfit for customer service, front office and marketing & sales jobs Be careful with frequency. Don‟t over-post …but again don‟t under-post. There is no magic formula for the number of posts per day. Each medium has slightly different rules of etiquette. On Twitter, for example, it is acceptable to post more than once a day. You don‟t want your posts to be so frequent that they become irrelevant to your audience. If you have to post several times in a day just like I do please vary your content. So much frequency may also show you spend so much time on social media thus „stealing‟ your employer‟s time when hired! Spelling Errors! Compose your posts, updates or tweets in a word processing

SOLOMON IRUNGU

document so you can check grammar and spelling before you send them. If you regularly post tweets or post full of errors people don‟t really take your seriously. If you want to send the right impression out there; take your time and proof read. Such shows better that you‟ve got a keen eye for details! DONT’S Watch your language. Don‟t use too much slang. Unless, of course, you want to be a celeb or you manage Ghetto Radio‟s account you can use informal language on a regular basis. Just make sure you are consistent. Just because you are a business student or recent graduate, doesn‟t mean you have to lose your personality either, great brands are authentic so once in a while feel free to do posts in Sheng; they are more engaging if the bulk of your pals are in the 18-24 age bracket however maintain a corporate appeal(Look & Feel) Don’t be dull. Coming up with fresh content and events to post about all the time is certainly challenging. However, you should try to vary the type of content as much as possible. And don‟t just focus on self-promotion. If you want to be a thought leader, you need to acknowledge other industry-related articles on the web. Finally, focus on creating buzz worthy posts that people will be more likely to send it to their friends. After all, social media is all about creating a network. Just note; never post alarming posts eg on politics or arguments that don‟t hold water-they just show how shall you are! Privacy Don't put anything on the Internet that you don't want your future boss, current client or potential clients to read. This is so basic and helps a lot. Don‟t place your private life on Social Media. Don‟t wash your dirty linen in public! Don’t drink & tweet! Never post when you're overly-tired, jet lagged, intoxicated, angry or upset. This is so important yet most people ignore it. You are always very eager to tweet when you get juicy details, when you are so happy or very annoyed. Same thing when some guy or chic messes up with you! Please avoid tweeting too much when you are drunk! Control the spam. Even if you are spamming the Internet, you need to be aware that it won‟t help you. Check your Face book account regularly to make sure that people aren‟t posting spam on your feed. After all, it makes your profile look careless if it‟s covered with junk. And when you are posting, make sure to avoid junky phrases or tons of special characters like, “WIN NOW! *!*!*!” that will turn people off from your profiles. Be warned that too much of push marketing or self promotion doesn‟t help push your event, agenda, sell your product or meet whatever objectives you may have. People don‟t want to befriend BILLBOARDS!

ost of the occupations that people are working in are not professions. This follows the fact that there are just a few of them meeting the qualifications of a profession. There are seven conditions that a profession meets over and above the usual occupations. The people working in the occupation must have esoteric knowledge and profound proficiency which is not exhibited by the other members of the public. This should enable the former to serve the society using these skills, for example accountants. The members of that profession must prove their knowledge and skills beyond reasonable doubt by passing an exam that has been set, supervised and marked by a rec-

The members must publicly take an oath offering themselves to serve humanity with their skills. Members of the occupation must have the capacity to exercise a high level of individual autonomy and independence of their judgement in their practice; avoiding decisions that would discredit their profession. The occupation must have a profession body that must have the power to regulate professional practice and to admit members before they begin the practice or expel them should they misbehave. The occupation must have a professional code of conduct to regulate and guide how the profession is practiced. The members must have a professional license to practice their tasks. An occupation that meets nothing less but the foregoing is what is recognized as a profession in the entire world.

It was a weekend of music extravaganza semi-finals. Some of the Nairobi SDA churches were present: Kawangware, Starehe, Dandora and Kibera were among the many; ready to battle one another; with their angelic voices. This was all for the sole purpose of getting the ticket for the finals. The composition of the choirs was rare: it comprised of both young, middle aged and fairly old members. The church was filled to the brim like a packet of playing cards. There is a general view floating around that SDA churches don’t breed very attractive girls, women rather. Fortunately, I always walked with idea that beauty is subjective. Therefore, the ones who say that we don’t have appealing women don’t have taste in beauty. This Sunday everything was in its climax. The ladies were dressed in attires of varying colors: black, brown and white. The below knee skirts did not do much in trying to minimize their exhibition of beauty. Each choir regardless of their large numbers performed perfectly. All the voices: alto, soprano, bass and tenas rained on the well placed microphones in appealing unison. ournalists are among the lucky few professionals who can get away with breaking dress codes in strictly formal environments.

You see, while other professionals may be denied access to formal events due to their dress codes, journalists just need to flash out their press cards, smile and confidently walk in their jeans and sneakers with no opposition from the security personnel. Surely, you would not expect a journalist to take pictures while in high heels or with the official tie chocking him? Although journalism as a profession does not have any official dress code, care should be taken especially when conducting interviews. A journalist should always do a thorough background check on their interviewee before conducting the interview. This will enable the journalist to dress appropriately for the interview so as not to offend their source by their dressing and also to create a wonderful rapport with the interviewee. It is based on the first impression that journalists are judged by the interviewee. The first impression can either make or break the interview. It can spark differences between the journalist and the source or bring out the similarities between the two. It also reveals the level of professionalism of the journalist. A professional journalist strives to be on a more equal level with their source. He or she strives to respect the culture, status, values and background so as to get the most out of their sources. This does not mean that journalist should deceive their sources but rather, dress codes should be a simple means of connecting to their sources. Different interviews call for different dress codes. There are interviews that require journalists to fish out their best official suit from their closets. This is to project a professional and ‌.Continued on the next page

serious image to the interviewee. Such include interviews with the crème de le crème of society, the business moguls and politicians. Live interviews also call for formal dressing on the part of the journalist. A journalist interviewing the common citizen or people in the jua kali sector need only to pull out their faded jeans and T-shirt and they are ready to go. This is to show the source that you are one of them and that they can trust you. The trick here is not to be utterly formal and neither should you be overly simple.

The journalist should strive to strike a balance between the two. A trick that almost all journalists pull is the mix and match dressing. This is whereby the journalist wears both official and casual. This type of dressing enables the journalist to transform with ease from either casual to formal or vice versa. For example, a male journalist might wear his jeans with a formal shirt without a tie. When duty calls him to a formal meeting, all he needs to do is just to pull the matching jacket from behind his seat and he is ready to go. The same applies to female journalists who just need to wear that official jacket over the casual dress and put on their official shoes instead of the flats. Whatever the scenario, a journalist should always be prepared for anything because you might never know when or where you will be sent to get the story.

BEHOLD THE LYTRO

By James Alando

The lytro also allows you to focus after the fact. Speaking geekanese again, I know. Ok what this simply means is that there is no shutter delay when taking pictures. Shutter delay is the delay which occurs after the shutter release button has been pressed and the actual recording of the image. This results in you getting a picture that you did not intend to get. The advantage of using the lytro therefore is that you can capture the moment that you meant to capture without worrying about the delay in shutter speed.

Di

gital photography goes a notch higher after the invention of the lytro camera which makes taking photographs more interactive.

The lytro is a five inch square tube camera with a lens opening at one end and an LCD touch screen at the other. The camera comes in two options: one can either buy the 8GB which holds approximately 350 pictures or the 16GB, which holds approximately 750 pictures. The camera captures light differently from traditional photography through the use of a light field sensor which is absent in the traditional cameras. The light field sensor enables the camera to capture color, intensity and direction of light from all angles. For those of you who think that I am speaking geekanese, this is a genius invention. Never before has there been any invention which can capture light from all directions. This is a milestone in digital photography because one can change the point of focus of the image after it has been captured (focus here meaning the point that is rendered sharply.) As in, say you have taken a picture of a girl holding flowers and the main focus of the picture is the girl; should you by any chance wish to shift the focus away from the girl to the flowers, you can while using the lytro.

As with all inventions, the lytro comes with its disadvantages too. For starters, it is quite costly. One lytro goes for about $400 which is approximately Ksh34000. This is expensive for the casual photographer who relies on his or her mobile phone or cheaper digital camera to meet their photography needs. Another disadvantage comes about when the picture has only one point of focus. This means that one cannot be able to shift the focus to another point of focus. Also, professional photographers tend to shy away from using the lytro as they intentionally focus on a given point to create desired effects. The lytro can shift the point of focus hence distorting the intended effect. It is also not locally available hence extra costs will have to be met for those wishing to keep abreast with technology. The future is bright for the lytro and more research should be done to make it better and more pocket friendly for the common folk.

ctober being the breast awareness month has seen to it the craze in women going for check- ups which are usually at subsidized rates if not free. Services like the clinical breast exam are provid-

ed free of charge while others like mammogram (a special x-ray of the breasts) are subsidized substantially. A woman cannot just afford to miss out on such an opportunity. Therefore, all the major hospitals are usually booked to the maximum during this month and the oncologists move all over the place conducting their awareness campaigns. Pink is the color of the month and a lot of fuss is made on sensitizing the women.

Whereas it is not a bad thing to concentrate on the women, I mean, they are the ones who are critically at risk of getting breast cancer; just by the mere fact of them being female. They are the ones who stand to lose an important body part, their dignity and in worse cases, their lives. I understand why the spotlight is on the women, but attention should also be cast on the men. Yes I said it, the men.

KENYANS HAVE A RIGHT TO PEACEFUL ELECTIONS

K

enyans voted for a new constitution on August 4, 2010, which was promulgated on 27th of August the same year; with pomp, optimism and a wide range of expectations. It’s just recently that we marked the second anniversary of the promulgation; yet factionalism, deficiency of goodwill, and sabotage within the political class is threatening to reverse some of the gains that Kenyans had collectively fought and hoped for. Again, it’s apparent that some key sectors in the constitution implementation programme are lagging behind, dragging other line sectors with them. In the same context, ordinary Kenyans have been placed on the margins of the constitutional implementation process and the reform agenda which is dominated by the political class and partly, the civil society. From the foregoing, it’s obvious that the situation contrasts the state of affairs in the early 1990’s through to the Bomas Conference talks where ordinary Kenyans were at the forefront of the constitutional review agenda. Students, youth, women, civil society, opposition politicians, Christian clergy and Muslim clerics, all joined hands in demanding for a people-driven and people-centred constitutional review process.

In addition, the country is in the mood of elections, and we must prepare for a battle to avert pre and post poll chaos as was witnessed in the 2007 general elections. The question is: are we ready for Peaceful Elections this time? How much change have we achieved in the institutions we deem critical to our electoral process, contrasted to the situation in 2007? Kenya shouldn’t be willing to make international headlines for the wrong reasons yet again! Kenya must only be exemplary to the international community in as far as a nation can learn from her mistakes. This shall only be if all citizens shall take it as their duty to ensure peace; and, if the critical institutions ready themselves for their roles. Again, we must recognise and commend the constructive

C.C: What are some of the triumphs that have made you love acting?

Manu: Acting involves a lot of things but mostly, it is just imitation because most of the time you have to change yourself and become someone else. Sometimes you are given a role as a street boy or maybe a watchman and you have to be perfect at it. So mostly it is all about impersonation, but acting is also an art in itself.

Manu: When someone tells me I have seen you on TV, or I saw your play and it was awesome. Or sometimes I am walking in town and someone just stops you and they are like “hey I liked your acting, I like the way you played that role.” It makes me feel really good because it means I have impacted someone. Also just shooting things and being on stage makes my day. I like being on set.

C.C: What are the skills necessary to succeed in acting? C.C: What inspires you to keep at it even when it Manu: If you want to pursue acting first of all, you is not easy? must be very social, you must not be shy because for example when you are doing theatre, you enter the theatre and there are so many people and you see people who you have never seen before. People with all kinds of eyes (giggles), which are all on you. You have to look at them and present your work perfectly, and also when you’re on set for a movie, there are people you have never met before like the cabin crew and actors, so you have to be very confident. You have to be versatile and ready to embrace change because sometimes you are told to put on a wig and make up and you are a dude and you have to do it. You should also be open-minded and ready for anything.

Manu: What inspires me is that movies and acting can change lives in a great way. Like with the plays I have been acting with a group known as Liquid Entertainment, we try to bring out Christian values in a comical way. In as much as we are making people laugh, we are showing them something positive. So the fact that I can change lives makes me want to go and do more. If I continue like that, I may become someone’s role model. There are people who come up to me and ask me how do you do it? How have you been able to get there? making me continue. Also the fact that I know it’s a God given talent and I have to use it, makes me push on. I don’t have any other talents. I can’t run like Usain bolt or Rudisha so I am just C.C: What are some of the challenges you have using what I have. faced along the way? C.C: How do you balance between school and acting? Manu: Its hectic I tell you like last semester, I missed a lot of classes but the good thing is that most of the classes are in the evening so I do my stuff during the day. In the evening I come to class, but most of the shoots go late into the night like at 2 AM so I have no option. I just make sure that I get roles that are during the day and even if it is in the night, I make sure it is after my class. C.C: What do you hope to achieve in your future? Manu: Well first I hope to inspire many kids I want to show them that you can make it through acting in Kenya you know the industry is not yet professional people just do it for fun, but I want to show people that we can make much of this industry we can inspire people, we can hire people and we can change lives through acting.

give it his all. When it comes to politics, I have to say president Barrack Obama because this man came from nowhere to somewhere. He always has hope even when things are tough. Personally I have to say my father because he is also those people who worked their way up. When we go upcountry he will show you the school he studied in and you go like what? But now he is living the “Kenyan dream” if I can say that C.C: What are some of the major roles you have played? Manu: I have done some supporting roles in movies and productions for example Mheshimiwa. Since I major in theatre, I have played most major roles in set books. I have also done adverts for Barclays and KPLC.

C.C: What are some of the lessons you have learnt along the way? Manu: Perseverance. That is the biggest lesson I have learnt and patience, because you give so much into the industry and what you get back is not worth it .I have also learnt to be social and I have learnt to appreciate life more because I have done shots in ghettos in the suburbs seen the different state of life people live in, each day I’m doing a role I learn a lot. C.C: Hobbies apart from acting? Manu: C.C: Are you single? Manu: (giggles) no I am actually seeing someone for now.

An angel so immaculate, God did just calculate, Beautiful I can’t exaggerate, my heart she might evacuate, Met her on the merry new year, to my heart she came so near, Her eyes were just so clear, to her heart I did steer, Angel cistocola, my bleeding heart. Her talk was fine intoxicating like wine, walking so divine, My hope one to nine, come be mine we dine, In whole did she shine, my heart she did reign, Normalcy was she crying, her tears me drying, Angel cistocola, my bleeding heart. Dangling dapperly for the dancehall, no action is ever small, Adventuring with my damsel, joyfully in a dandle, A dandelion and a dandle, a treat to the tango, Darling down the alley, a give I never worry, Angel cistocola, my bleeding heart. Comes a dandy with a dander, to me seems a stranger, Charges swinishly in anger, oh my I see danger, Draws out a dagger, and strikes like anaconda, Surprisingly I do ponder, oblivious of his vigor, Angel cistocola, my bleeding heart. Walks away the stranger in rage, leaving us on the stage, We stare in trepidation, he has caused a commotion, Why on cistocola who is mine, never can he reign, A heart he did strain, not washable in rain, Angel cistocola, my bleeding heart. Stranger caused mental disturbance, had been there in exclusion, Tried much to quarantine, he did not meet the qualification, In good faith I did for love, nothing did that move, Why did I ever dream, yet there was him, Angel cistocola, my bleeding heart. I will hide you in mine heart groove, if you strive to love, I assure we will survive, to eternity we will live, Empress you will be, after everything I give, Come baby come, mutually let us be, Angel cistocola, my bleeding heart. Together we contribute, of love the attribute, Living with no worry, hurry but don’t hurry, Let us modify, and live in no cry, Love baby love, live baby live, Angel cistocola, my bleeding heart.
