DIRECTORS LETTER

I

n the summer of 1983, Debi Patterson, staff member at Kiniya, created The Kiniya Book of Records. It is a bright blue,160-page accounting book that sits on the shelf in my office.

On page one, in meticulous handwriting, it reads: “The purpose of the Kiniya Book of Records is to provide fun and challenge for 1983 and many Kiniya summers to come.”

That year, Muffy Moran cleared the limbo at 22 inches.

Two years later, Natalie Turgeon completed the 2-mile Clay Point swim in 29 minutes. Heather Hartman completed the 100-yard dash in 14 seconds in 1990, and Erin Galey completed 40 cartwheels in one minute in '93.

In '99, Mary-Claude Marcil held a perfect headstand for ten minutes and 14 seconds, and Ariel Lash hula-hooped for one hour and four minutes in 2001. #20203 Mary Piazza balanced on one leg for two hours in '04, and #20132 Gigi Gadenne jumped rope rhythmically for two hours and 24 minutes in '06. #22363 Anna Henley crushed the record for most consecutive upward tennis racquet bounces totaling 13,435 in 2011!

This summer, we remembered each girl listed in the Blue Book as we held Kiniya Records Day yet again. Previous titles were announced, and the campers of 2019 raced from one challenge to the next with giddy enthusiasm. The dining hall was abuzz with excitement when results were announced. Most notably, #22687 Annie Oatman, daughter of Kiniya Alum Gretchen Oatman (Weiss) CK '80s, proudly broke Anna Henley’s 2011 record with 15,687 tennis ups!

Camp is the perfect backdrop for shared experiences of fun and challenge. It is here that we learn that these two are not mutually exclusive, often taking place at the same time. Sometimes the fun and the challenge are found on a trail in the woods or on the Climbing Tower at the KOB, and sometimes they come in the simple form of the Kiniya Book of Records. Wherever they are found, girls continue to grow and thrive in this place that encourages them to expand their comfort zone in a safe and fun setting.

At Camp, free from technology and surrounded by diverse and supportive role models, girls can face challenges with courage and self-assurance. They witness problem solving through understanding and the guided sharing of differences. We hope that each camper leaves Kiniya with a greater sense of courage, empathy and confidence—all characteristics that will serve her a lifetime.

Treasures are discovered on any given day at Kiniya. The bright blue, dog-eared Book of Records is a reminder of their abundance. More often than not, these gifts emerge from each camper making Kiniya her own. She passes them on to others, marking the culture we cherish, the friendships made, and the hearts of all of us.

The pictures of any given summer, as spectacular as they may be, will never do justice to the rare and true beauty of Kiniya and the girls who make it so.

DIRECTORS LETTER

E

ach morning at Camp, a leader or staff member shares a message with the entire community in their Chapel Talk. On the last day of my tenth summer as Director, #20763 Chris Piesch spoke about gratitude. This Junior Asst. D-Head's words truly spoke to me. Like so many other times at Camp Dudley, I was inspired by one of my leaders. We all got a chance that morning to stop and pause and think about the importance of showing gratitude in our daily lives.

I am grateful for my environment. I get to work in one of the most beautiful parts of the world with a team of dedicated professionals that take pride in all that they do.

They are also close friends that I know I can turn to in times of need.

I am grateful for my work, that is focused on developing the lives of young people. I get to witness tremendous growth on a daily basis and to support boys through the ups and downs of self discovery. Amazing things happen here at Dudley, and I get a front-row seat.

I am grateful for my close-knit family; we all share a love of this place. Siblings and cousins have grown up into young adults together each summer on both sides of the Lake, choosing to spend meaningful time in Westport with their Mom-mom and Babo who love them so. My mom and dad are excellent role models for each of us, and we are all grateful for their constant love and example.

I am grateful for friendship. So many of my early Dudley leaders and best friends have chosen to send their boys to create their own Dudley experiences. The fact that guys like Jay Wells, George Haskell, Peter Boodell, Todd

Lubin, David Degnan, Josh Mayer, Fanning Hearon, Tyler Hearon, Marcus Chioffi, Chris Rodgers and Ryan Corey all trust me with their boys each summer is truly humbling.

I am the lucky recipient of the renewed and deepening friendships with them as we grow older together through Camp.

I am grateful for my mentors who guide me as I find my own way in this job and in life. The Board of Trustees continues to lead our organization, and I consider myself fortunate to be both pushed and supported as we all encounter new challenges and opportunities for our community.

I am grateful for the broader Camp community that continues to give back. At a time when there are more summer opportunities than at any other time in history, we rely on families and friends who know the benefit of a Dudley or Kiniya summer. Similarly, at a time when so many seek financial support, we are grateful to those who continue to support our Annual Fund, allowing us to offer the best possible programs.

I am grateful to my wife Jessica, who is my true partner in this role. And I am grateful for my children—Ellie, Carter and Rachel—who keep finding their own unique experiences through Dudley and Kiniya. We have all grown so much during the last ten years, and for this we are truly grateful.

reetings from TĂźbingen, Germany! I hope this email finds you well and that you are having a lovely spring and gearing up for the summer ahead in Westport.

I am currently living in a house with 11 other people, and as one can imagine, such a situation brings challenges on a daily basis. A unique aspect of my situation is that the house is an independent association. We are self-governed, regulated, and responsible only to ourselves and the members of our association (the past residents of the house who continue to pay annual dues to help sponsor the project). The idea that students sometimes as young as 18 are responsible for their own house without any sort of 'adult' oversight or executive body to influence daily life or design the rules, schedules, and maintenance is something unique. Many college students who live in student housing, for instance, have little stake in the maintenance of those facilities

In my house we are accountable for all those things and must make it work. That's where Camp comes in for me. Lessons learned in the course of cabin duties, F.O.D. walks on main campus, and campsite maintenance on hikes and trips have proven invaluable to me in this new experience. By learning at Camp that I am part of a legacy of men and women who have come before me, and a steward of the places I love for those who will follow me, I have come into this experience fully aware and ready to undertake new responsibilities, even though others around me may not yet recognize the privilege entrusted to them.

Although this aspect of camp life rarely ranks as a favorite memory for campers or leaders, it is an essential part in building men and women who will go out into the world prepared to 'leave it better than they found it' and rise to the challenges and responsibilities of life.

Steve reported being seated near #9210 Chris “Kit” Nelson who was at Camp from 1957 - 1963. Says Steve, “I can’t tell you how fun it was for Dad and I to watch you go back in time and recall your great days at Dudley! Best of all for me was sharing the wonderful addition to the Camp Dudley family known as Camp Kiniya (the girls campus in Colchester, VT).” Kit has served in the Air Force, has been a public school teacher and now lives in St. Simon’s, GA. We are excited to be in the process of reconnecting him to the greater Dudley Family.

#13081 Jack Mingle, Bradenton, FL, sent in this report following a return north after his winter in the sunny south: “While shopping in the Maine outlets and wearing a Dudley long sleeved shirt, a gentleman asked, ‘Is that Camp Dudley?’ I said yes, and he immediately responded with his camp number, #8421, I, of course, responded with my number, #13081.

Camper #8421 was Hugh Savage, Brunswick, ME, and he was there with his wife Caroline. We talked for quite a bit about our camp experiences and love of Camp.” #14889 Jon Ferrari, Yardley, PA, was at the NFL Combine in his role as VP of Football Operations for the Philadelphia Eagles. While staying at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis, he ran into a young beat reporter for theathletic.com. #17081 Bo Wulf cornered Jon to introduce himself and tell him that he recognized him from camp. They swapped camp stories from their shared time on campus when Jon was a Leader and Bo was a camper.

#11553 Scott Johnston, Vienna, VA, wrote of a small world encounter at his church. “Our church has a monthly men’s breakfast at a local diner. Recently the discussion turned to how we spent our summers growing up. I mentioned that I went to a boys camp in upstate NY. The fellow next to me said, ‘Dudley?’

‘Yep!’ I replied and he said, ‘So did I!’ After singing the camp cheer to the table, I discovered that my fellow camper was #10714 Will Ferris, McLean, VA, who went to camp in 1968.” Will was a lost sheep and has now been reconnected to Camp.

#15288 Mike and #21288 Julie Schloat, Deerfield, MA, sent news of a serendipitous meeting at Universal Studios Theme Park. Mike ran into #14278 PJ and #24878 Diane Calello, Martinsville, NJ, at the coffee bar of the hotel where both were staying during their visit. They connected a few other times in the parks—lots of fun!

SMALL WORLD #20725 Ragon Willmuth, wrote from his new home in Colorado: “I am here in Denver! I live in Lakewood, Colorado, southwest of Denver, so great proximity to the city and the ski hills. I looked at the open house schedule and saved the date in November so I can see you guys. Anyways... I was hiking out in the Flat Irons near Boulder and saw some random guy with a Dudley hat on. I was stunned and immediately asked him who he was. (I had my Dudley Under Armor shorts on to show him I wasn't some random kid.) Turns out to be #12644 Jonathan Crowder.

I... actually remember him speaking at Chapel a few summers ago. He was real nice and I learned he lives in Eldorado Springs. He said that I am the very first Dudleyite he's ever seen out in Colorado. I couldn't believe it. What are the odds I’d run into this guy on the trail in the middle of the mountains? Just another small world Dudley experience I've had. Thought you'd like the story.”

Matt Perry, Denver, CO, writes that his son, #24913 Drew Perry, had a Dudley encounter at Philmont Scout Ranch’s Family Adventure Camp. While Drew was walking through the trekking camp, wearing his Dudley hat, he was stopped by a counselor who asked if he attended Dudley. That counselor was #22205 Ted Rogers, Haverford, PA, who was working for the summer at Philmont in northern New Mexico.

Hard to believe, but this group is now out a full 60 years from Dudley. Roger Bransford, Lew Wright and Skip Schumacher have passed away. Several have stayed deeply involved over the years, including Messrs. Rollie Stichweh, Bill Combs, Bill Vanneman, Mike McCutcheon and John Storey. Others have been longtime supporters, parents and now grandparents of Dudleyites and Kiniyaites, for which we are grateful.

What is a great Camp memory you have kept with you over the years?

What is a great Camp memory you have kept with you over the years?

Too many, so I will pick my earliest one: enthusiastically (and naively) signing up for skydiving IMs as a Cub. We had to put a second choice, "in case the weather doesn’t work out.”

Classic Dudley humor!

A memory that I often reflect on at Camp is one that happened on a weekly basis, Hymn Sing. Most people at Camp cherish Hymn Sing and the uniqueness of this weekly ritual. As we transitioned into the final five, I loved sitting back in my Crazy Creek, closing my hymnal, shutting my eyes and listening to the hum of ‘Neath the pines.

What do you wish you could replicate from Camp in your away-from-Camp life?

Hymn Sing! Although Jane (#19496) and I try to replicate it every night at bedtime with our two-year-old!

What do you wish you could replicate from Camp in your away-from-Camp life?

This is an easy one, rest hour!

What do you remember learning at Camp for the first time?

Confidence. From Cub to D-Head, every part of my Dudley career brought new challenges and made me who I am today.

What advice would you share with a new camper or firsttime Leader starting this summer?

Practice saying "yes" — to new friends, new activities, new perspectives. Camp will provide these opportunities. It is up to you to embrace them.

One recommendation: learn how to sail! It is the most fun thing to do at Camp (I’m biased), and a great skill to have later in life.

When are you coming back?

Do you have any openings for Leaders in 2020? Iroquois is preferable, but I'll take anything.

What do you remember learning at Camp for the first time?

Two years as a Leader and two years as division head prepared me to enter the work force with a unique skill set many young adults do not possess. My ability to communicate, delegate, and navigate conflict resolution provided me with opportunities to move up quickly. I also started hiking for the first time at Camp.

What advice would you share with a new camper or firsttime Leader starting this summer?

Ask for help! For campers, Camp can initially seem very intimidating if you are new. I remember feeling very out of place my first night at Camp. The Leaders and staff want you to feel comfortable and welcomed but it can feel overwhelming when everyone knows each other already. If you are feeling this way, tell your leader/AL/JL/aide. They can help organize games or free choice activities with you and your cabin mates so you can get to know them faster.

For first-time Leaders, lean on your Division Heads and experienced Leaders for advice.

When are you coming back?

Next summer! I will be fortunate enough to spend my 30th birthday on the shores of Lake Champlain! campdudley.org

CAMP DUDLEY WESTPORT, NY Summer 2019

I

t was another impactful and fun summer on the shores of Lake Champlain in Westport. A wet spring meant that the lake was high and the fields were wet for the start of the first session, but we didn’t let that slow us down to start the summer.

Each program area created magical experiences in the arts, athletics, outdoors and spirituality and the Leaders guided each and every camper through our incredibly busy days with compassion and fun. The Leaders this summer were truly an impressive group of young men dedicated to making 2019 the best summer ever for the boys in their cabins and on their hikes and teams.

The first session featured another amazing July 4th celebration, complete with a visit from Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow! The second session showcased our long standing music festival, Mellowfest. And throughout the summer in Witherbee Hall we got to see “Almost, Maine,” “Monster House,” “To Kill a Mockingbird,” “Once on this Island,” “It,” “Treasure Island,” and our Big Show, “The Race,” about the race between the US and USSR to be the first to the moon.

As always, the fields and courts were filled with fun competition. Our boys explored the mountains, lakes, and rivers of the Adirondacks and we also added a Senior Service trip this summer to give back to our local communities in the North Country.

All in all, just another summer at Dudley filled with magic, friendship, and fun.

CAMP KINIYA COLCHESTER, VT Summer 2019

S

ummer 2019 nourished our souls with kindness, compassion, and friendship. Our time together swiftly passed by as we challenged each other and ourselves in arts, athletics, outdoors and spirituality. The weather was practically perfect and we benefited from a full and beautiful Lake Champlain! 2019 marked our first summer with four divisions — Cubs, Cats, Juniors and Seniors—and each group brought incredible energy to every single day.

Our new Divisional structure allowed for more intimate and meaningful relationships among campers and Leaders within their divisions. We experienced the brilliance of our Leaders when they put their own stamp on their divisional blocks. Just imagine ... egg drop, Hunger Games, tie-dye, Harry Potter’s birthday, blueberry picking! The list goes on and the anticipation of future summers continues to grow.

Our first session campers experienced an incredibly hot and fantastically spirited 4th of July. Between three-way capture the flag, an all-camp carnival, and a mass vesper to end the day, celebrations were in full force. Later in the summer our second session campers enjoyed Kiniya Records Day. Who can stand on one leg the longest? How about the most pushups in a row? And, perhaps most notably, the new Kiniya record for bouncing a tennis ball up on a racquet is now 15,687 times!!!

We are grateful to each member of our 2019 community.

Our experiences will always be shared and these memories will certainly last a lifetime.

DUDLEY & KINIYA OFF-CAMPUS The Off-Campus Programs offer campers unique challenges and opportunities. The National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) trip provides a 15-day trekking and backcountry adventure mixed with leadership development lessons. The Camp Priego (Spain) and Camp Abbensen (Germany) trips offer international camping, homestay, and in-country touring.

The Story of Whim Golf A Dudley friendship leads into business partnership

T

he story of Whim Golf finds its origins on the base of Mt. Marcy; founders #18457 Colin Heaberg and #18835 Will Gisel were together on a Senior hike, quickly bonding over the disposable cameras they both brought as well as a mutual obsession for NFL football. The friendship would build over the summer as the duo discovered further aligned interests including music taste and a shared curiosity.

But it was at Brodie in the silk-screening course that Whim Golf finally began to take shape. By the end of summer Will and Colin had partnered up to create a collection of t-shirts, crewnecks and socks.

Flash forward 14 years and the duo is still working, co-founding a multidisciplinary creative agency called Whim. They tell their stories through clothing under their clothing label Whim Golf.

In the summer of 2019, Whim Golf opened to retail pop-up locations in downtown Chicago and the Lower East Side of Manhattan, focusing on presenting the game of golf in an approachable way and showcasing two clothing collections. Whim Golf seeks to highlight the beauty of golf, attracting the next generation of players through an inviting design approach that makes people feel like they are included in the sport.

All clothing is made in the USA featuring cut and sew jackets, pants, shirts, shorts and hats that highlight under-appreciated elements of the game. Whim Golf designs clothes, experiences and art that invite a new audience into the game while honoring its heritage.

t the August 2017 Camp Dudley Association reunion, Dwight Poler announced the Building for the Future Capital Campaign and its $10M dollar goal. In the Fall 2017 CD News, Matt and Marnie enthusiastically announced the project details to our entire community.

Today, we are equally excited to report the news that we have hit and even exceeded our $10M goal! Dwight Poler, Building for the Future Campaign Chair, first shared the news at the CDA reunion in August. Said Dwight, “We are thrilled to announce that more than 470 generous and faithful community members have pushed us beyond our goal! We are grateful for the investment that each has made for the benefit of our Campers today and for generations to come.” As of this writing, more than $10,065,000 has been pledged!

“The Dudley and Kiniya family has once again answered the call. Our Campers are the true beneficiaries of these generous gifts,” said Dwight.

HOW HELP CAMP?

T

his is perhaps one of the most frequent questions posed to Matt and Marnie. It comes from all corners of our community—parents who are excited to see their children again, grandparents who helped a loved one attend Camp, alumni who are eager to reconnect and share vivid memories from their seasons in Westport and Colchester. All are interested and want to give back to Camp in a meaningful way.

This popular question has three short, simple answers: • Send us great kids • Join us on the Open House trail and bring a friend • Give generously of your financial resources The first two answers are fundamentally about helping us find and recruit the lifeblood of our Camps, new campers. With your help in these areas, our community remains lively and diverse, drawing young people from across the country and from around the world. We work hard to make the Dudley and Kiniya experiences available to the greatest number of individuals.

When it comes to offering our financial resources, we often forget that everyone has the ability to make a generous gift. This does not necessarily mean pledging thousands of dollars; rather, it means contributing what you can according to your personal circumstances. Each gift touches campers in a very important way. Each gift demonstrates your support of the other fellow.

In 2019, the majority of our $850,000 Annual Fund goal is being used to provide financial assistance to campers.

The Fund also sustains leadership development and facilities. Please consider making an Annual Fund gift because, no matter the size, your contribution shows that you care about all our boys and girls, and about Camp’s future.

CDA Reunion Recap

Written by #19231 Kari McKinley, CDA Vice President Reunion weekend was a huge success this year with a fun-loving group of alumni and their families.

There were a number of monumental celebrations.

Friday night, an inaugural Lifetime Service Award was presented to and will be named in perpetuity of #8804 John and #18204 Martha Storey for the outstanding service they’ve provided to Camp and their community over the years.

Saturday morning was started with a fun run on the Dudley Road and a yoga session on the Middlebury Pavilion. The 25th Memorial George Nelson golf tournament was kicked off early in the day. Hiking, climbing, swimming, boating, archery, tennis, and the Giant Swing were enjoyed by many. During the afternoon there was a free throw tournament honoring the new Ben Nelson Basketball courts and following that was a sweat-soaked, heckle spattered, flip flop running competitive 5-on-5 game of hoops to give the court and #8070 Ben some love and laughter.

Saturday night began with the announcement of reaching and then surpassing the Building for the Future Capital Campaign goal of $10 million dollars

this summer— thank you to all who contributed!

And kudos to the year-round teams at Dudley and Kiniya for the outstanding work they did in helping to accomplish this huge goal. There was also recognition of three notable employees whose last summer has just past: #9675 Dave “Westy” West, #14962 Josh Olcott, and the one and only #15305 Sheila Kapper.

Sheila was also awarded the Person of the Year Award for her 30 years of tireless service to the Dudley community and the local school system. Witherbee was filled with fantastic energy and fun memories to honor Sheila, who we still can’t imagine Dudley without! A spirited Hymn Sing followed and was led by #14866 James Mayo.

Sunday, to complete a great weekend, #7381 Paul Lutz gave a beautiful Chapel service on stoking the Dudley fire within yourself. (See page 39.)

The following remarks were written by CDA Vice President, Kari McKinley

T

he Dudley infirmary will never be the same. This summer concludes thirty incredible years during which Camp was kept safe and well nurtured by our dear Sheila Kapper. I had the privilege of helping honor this amazing woman and nurse during the Person of the Year celebration at the CDA reunion in late August. There is no shortage of material or stories to be found when trying to find the words and ways to show our appreciation and respect for her. As you can see from the side bar on this page, the love for our dear Camp Mom runs deep.

As I recalled at reunion, Sheila has been a big presence in my life. From my thirteen years at Elizabethtown-Lewis Central School, where Sheila spent her fall, spring, and winters “off” to collaborating during my summers at the Hike Hut to helping me heal from a number of ailments, including the time her son, Devin, and I used our heads to cushion the blow for an aluminum canoe that slipped while we were unloading a boat trailer in a downpour (no safety there!), she has always

been there to support, teach, and comfort me.

Most importantly, she was an inspiration for me on my path towards my nursing career. My initial impression of being the Camp Nurse was that it was a glamorous and vacation-like way to spend the summers. However, as I spent a couple of years at the Kiniya infirmary, I came to the realization that it’s far from a lunch role. Sheila is a force to be reckoned with— her strong skills, efficiency, wonderful sense of humor, and calm energy make a busy, exhausting, sometimes heartbreaking job look laid back and easy.

H

er tireless service to Camp is the ultimate example of living The Other Fellow First. We have been so blessed. And we cannot forget to thank and appreciate her family, #17537 Fred, #19537 Luke and #15905 Devin, for their generosity and selflessness in sharing their wife and mother with the Camp community for so many years.

Sheila, we promise no more 2AM calls to Cabin 7. Enjoy the peace and quiet, you deserve it!

Low Number Event

W

hat began as a small backyard party several years ago has now become one of the hottest tickets during the CDA Reunion. The Low Number Gathering opens the Reunion late on Friday afternoon as our seasoned alumni gather for fellowship and food. The excitement of being together again with old friends, and occasionally a younger one, makes the air buzz. Take a look at the smiling faces and you’ll get the idea. While usually void of speeches and presentations, this year’s Low Number Event was interrupted briefly as Board Chair, #22898 Whitney Phelps, presented the first Lifetime Service Award to #8804 John and #18204 Martha Storey. (See page 42)

#7381 Paul Lutz

P

aul Lutz, #7381 vowed that he would be back on the Chapel platform at 90! He meant 90 years old, not 90 degrees! On August 2, 2019, Paul celebrated turning 90 with his family in Atlanta. On August 25, 2019 he continued the celebration, returning to the Dudley Chapel platform. Paul told the story of meeting Camper #1, George Peck, and delivered this challenge: we all need to Throw Another Log on the Dudley Fire to keep the flame of the Dudley Spirit burning brightly. Paul recounted his experiences with the “Fire Fighters” of his days at Camp and charged the community to remember Chief’s “10 Goals for Camp” as they appeared in the July 7, 1948 Dudley Doings. These goals were offered to “help encourage each camper to become a better person and a contributing member of school and society.” They still serve us well today.

Matt Storey 10 Years of Service The following remarks were shared with the faithful that gathered in Witherbee Hall, Saturday night, August 24, 2019 at CDA Reunion.

This presentation was a special surprise to Matt and was given by #20001 Marnie McDonagh.

W

hen #13804 Matt Storey accepted the position in 2008 as Camp Dudley’s 12th Director, I’m not certain that he anticipated just how quickly ten summers would swiftly pass by. He joins only four former Directors in reaching his milestone 10th summer season as Director, and tonight, my dear friend Matt, we all applaud you!

Matt’s vision, his leadership, warmth and compassion for all people has made him one of the truly outstanding camp directors in all of North America. He is admired and respected by his camping peers, many of whom often look to him as a sounding board and resource.

Every day here at Dudley, we see the product of his kindness, we see young lives shaped and transformed by a truly great mentor.

Every decision Matt makes is most certainly guided by our mission and our motto. He is innovative and creative — always thinking about ways to strengthen program and introduce new initiatives while also upholding traditions in a balanced way. He has Camp’s best interest in mind at all times, modelling what steadfast stewardship really means. He handles both minor and complex issues with diplomacy and

tact, doing everything with honor and never for honor.

Matt’s success through this decade in Dudley’s history is his to own and to be deeply proud of. We also recognize the fact that his ten summers as Director have been a true team effort, an entire family’s dedication and commitment to their life here and their relationships within this camp community and the Town of Westport. Matt, Jess, Ellie, Carter, Rachel (and even Duke and Wilson!) have been so gracious, opening up their lives and their home to so many of the Dudley family with a warm welcome and enthusiastic embrace.

Their presence and commitment has most certainly resulted in a strengthened community at large.

I think #15017 Evan George said it best when asked to share his thoughts on Matt. He said: “When I was a camper, I remember Matt being one of those Leaders around campus who clearly had the respect of not just the boys, but his peers and supervisors too. As I’ve gotten to know him as an adult, all of those qualities have been reinforced and now I feel so very lucky to call him not just my boss, but a mentor and friend”.

What a leader contributes, shapes an organization's future. Because of Matt Storey, the legacy of Camp Dudley will not only live on, it will continue to shine.

Archival Treasure Hunt: Herman Carl Beckman and Mount Hermon Academy By #9675 David “Westy” West

A

s I was preparing to return to Northfield Mount Hermon for my 50th reunion this past spring, I recalled reading that #310 Herman Carl Beckman (“Chief,” as he was known to us) had attended Mount Hermon School before attending Yale Scientific College in 1903. My curiosity as an alumnus of Mount Hermon and as one who often visits the Dudley archives to look over Ace Scharges’ shoulder led me to arrange a meeting with the dedicated Mount Hermon library archivist, Peter Weis. What he found was both fascinating and revealing about the young adult mind of Herman and his bond between Camp Dudley and Mount Hermon.

There are not many Dudley alumni alive who were campers during “Chief’s” 40 years as Camp Director (1908-1947) but they would surely tell us that he was larger than life to those boys who knew him.

Six feet tall, barrel-chested, strong and athletic, he is without a doubt the most influential and important icon in Dudley history. He turned Camp Dudley from a little known summer camp in 1908 into one of the best-known and best-equipped in the country.

It has often been said that “he was Camp Dudley and Camp Dudley was Chief.”

Northfield Seminary for Young Ladies and Mount Hermon school for boys were founded in 1879 and 1881 respectively. Their mission was to provide an education to boys and girls who had limited opportunity for an education because they were poor. These students would subsequently lead a life in the service of the Lord, Jesus Christ. In order to be admitted to Mount Hermon in 1902, a boy had to prove both his poverty and commitment to a “moral” life.

When I arrived for my meeting with Peter Weiss, he presented me with a file of original documents.

Included were Herman’s letter of application, the

application itself, his transcript, medical examiner’s report on his health, his three recommendations for admittance, and a few other letters. One on Dudley letterhead was written in 1908, Chief’s first year as camp director. As a historian, I was in heaven.

Herman C. Beckman was born in 1882 in the “Hell’s Kitchen” of New York City to poor German immigrants seeking a better life in America. His father died when he was only 7 years old and, as the oldest of five children, he would soon take on the role of bread-winner for his mother and siblings. He attended P. S. 67 where he was a good student, and graduated in 1896 at the age of 14. It was that year that he joined the new West Side YMCA, where he met Charles Batchelor, a young man who was head of the Boy’s Department and was a Mount Hermon alumnus. In the summer of that year, he attended Camp Dudley for the first time, where he was given the camp number #310. When he returned to NYC later that summer, he began a career in the insurance business to help support his family. In order to advance his career and achieve his full potential, Charles Batchelor, as well as his minister and his boss, encouraged him to pursue higher education. They suggested the preparatory school at Mount Hermon and then The Scientific College of Yale University. According to Mr. Weiss, the only requirement to enter Yale, and other prestigious schools of the time, was to pass an entrance exam and be of high moral character.

In February of 1902, just a few days after turning 20, Herman sent in a most remarkable letter asking for admittance into Mount Hermon. In this extensive letter, he explains the circumstances of his life up to that point and his ambitions for his future.

I was delighted to read the following statement: “In the year 1896, I joined the new West Side

Branch YMCA Boy’s Department and gradually its influence took root in my life and in the month of July 1897, I was persuaded to give my life to Jesus Christ. It was at the boys camp at Lake Champlain that I saw the wisdom of choosing the Savior.” He goes on to say that at first, his parents were against his Christian life (curious, since his father was passed). He noted the “temptations” of city life and the need for more Bible study. On his application, he seemed to omit some of the questions and was rather vague and cryptic on others. Strangely to me, he lists his nationality as German even though he was born in the United States. Apparently his younger brother was successful enough to take over the care of his mother and sisters and assisted Herman with tuition.

He would have to earn his own money for room and board. According to his official Mount Hermon file, he was admitted in September 1902, after his first year as a Leader at Dudley. In Mr. Batchelor’s letter of recommendation, he says of Herman, “I have urged him to apply for the dormitory life, for I believe he would greatly profit by this and be a help to those whose lives he comes into contact with.”

Herman only attended Mount Hermon for three terms, including the summer term in 1903 instead of attending camp. He carried a heavy academic schedule including algebra, trigonometry, Latin, English, composition, German, geometry, Caesar, singing, chapel and of course Bible studies. In addition to his dormitory duties, he also, like all Mount Hermon boys, worked on the school farm. In another letter to the school, he apologizes for not returning for a fourth term because he had been admitted to Yale in 1903. He said how he would miss the school and his many friends there but was comforted by the many Hermonites also attending Yale.

Herman continued his correspondence with the Mount Hermon Headmaster, Dr. H. F. Cutler for many years, including a note dated April 30, 1908, that says: “This letter is from one of the “old boys” … I am sending you a copy of the Camp Dudley prospectus in which I am especially interested this summer of 1908.” He was asking Dr. Cutler for a recommendation to accompany his

application as Camp Director. The last entry in Beckman’s Mount Hermon file is on Camp Dudley letterhead and is dated July 27, 1908, barely one month into his first summer as director. It is signed, Sincerely Yours, An old Hermonite, HC Beckman.

"Juneternship" Launches!

S

everal young Leaders had the opportunity to participate in our new “Juneternship” program over the past summers. The idea is that many of our leaders are feeling the need to gain important internship experience but still want to be a Leader at Dudley or Kiniya. We believe that their experience here at camp is oftentimes more valuable personally and professionally than anything they can gain working in an office. The connections within the Dudley Family are strong, and we feel this program is just getting started. “It is a win-win, they make the most of their time between school and camp when we get them back in the cabin for one more summer,” said Matt Storey.

They are wonderful young men, a delight to work with and made awesome contributions to our work.” #13785 Todd Lubin hosted #21254 Bruce Baldwin at his film and media production firm Matador Content in NYC and Alum #14889 Jon Ferrari helped Dudley Leader #23188 Tom Mero gain meaningful work experience with the Philadelphia Eagles. #21193 Matt Eldridge had the following to say about his time with Dudley friend Matt Strobeck in Burlington, VT. “My internship at Birchview Capital gave me a complete but accelerated summer intern experience. The firm was flexible with my timeframe before Camp and I was able to learn the skills/gain experience in my desired areas while still contributing to the firm. The Birchview experience was everything I needed to learn more about a possible postcollege career interest and supplement my resume while allowing me to spend another summer at Dudley.”

Service Program at Camp Dudley By #19136 Ian Kotz

S

ervice at Camp Dudley has had many different faces over the years. One aspect that has not changed, however, is the integration of service and The Other Fellow First. Assisting others and the motto are inexorably linked.

Service requires putting our thoughts and words into action. It is rooted in equity, charity, and sustainability— helping those who need it most while expecting nothing in return, and doing it in a way that is sustainable for both the community and the environment.

The goal over the last two summers has been to encourage servant leadership, where we serve not because we are required to, but because it is our privilege and our duty to help others.

With that in mind, we have branched out to see what Camp Dudley can do to give back to the communities that surround and support camp.

This past summer we increased our impact by adding a service major, and were fortunate to work with a variety of partners from the area.

The Cub/Plebe service majors watered the post office garden, picked up litter, and repainted the benches in Ballard Park. The Junior/ Senior service majors worked on an overgrown Champlain Area Trails route, transforming it into a beautiful walking trail by the end of the summer. They also painted rooms in the Federated Church of Westport. During each half, one senior hiking trip functioned as a service trip. The first half seniors worked at the Hub on the Hill Farm in Essex, while the second half seniors helped forge a new section of trail for the North Country National Scenic Trail. This was in addition to the on-campus service club, senior service cabins, and team time service.

We hope to continue our work off-campus and encourage more camper participation across the board. I am unbelievably proud of all the hard work the boys accomplished this season and hope we can carry our momentum into the summers to come!

The First Lifetime Service Award

hitney Phelps #22898, Chair of the Board of Trustees, used the Low Camp Number Gathering at CDA Reunion to announce a new tribute that will be made by the Trustees from time to time. The Lifetime Service Award was created to honor individuals who have selflessly given of their personal time, talent and treasures throughout their lives for the betterment of our Camps.

The first Lifetime Service Award was given to #8804 John and #18204 Martha Storey “because of their constant, steady, and faithful presence in the Dudley and Kiniya communities. Their passion, unconditional commitment, and enduring dedicated support have been both a sustaining and a transformational force for Dudley and Kiniya. Over the course of half a century, John and Martha have shared with thousands in our community their seemingly endless supply of talents.”

Whitney cited contributions that include:

Serving Camp since his first summer in 1955, John was an Aide, JL and Leader before meeting Martha. He led a German Exchange trip to Camp Abbensen in 1963. Once Martha became part of their “service team,” John worked as the president of the Camp Dudley Association and served the Board of Trustees for three terms. John became Board Chair in 1987 and 1988 and was selected as the CDA Person of the Year in 2000. Said Whitney, “John and Martha have been immensely helpful behind the scenes on more fronts and in more ways than could ever be counted.

They have always taken advantage of saying ‘yes’ to Camp.”

Whitney presented John and Martha with a specially designed, engraved plaque that was built from Kiniya pine and Dudley cedar as a tribute to their work at both Camps.

They will be honored in Westport and Colchester and this award will be known in perpetuity as the John and Martha Storey Lifetime Service Award.

• Writing, editing and publishing countless editions of the CD News. When the publication would have otherwise slowed down, they dove in and led the production for many years—uniting and invigorating our alumni base and teaching others their craft.

• Serving as the resident Board historians and providing past Board Chair, #10643 Matt Quigley, with Dudley history and trivia to be read at the start of Board meetings.

• Hosting countless Open Houses in Williamstown, MA, and recruiting hundreds of Dudley and Kiniya campers from their hometown.

• Creating and hosting the Low Camp Number Events in Westport at CDA Reunion and in Florida.

• Actively engaging the community during the critically important Dudley Family Campaign. It is that campaign that provided the funding and finances for Dudley and Kiniya to join forces.

• Parenting three fabulous children who are equally dedicated to our Camps.

Why is Camp so Beneficial?

O

n a beautiful Tuesday, my wife and I dropped our skinny, pale son, Matthew, for the start of his junior year at Camp. We would miss him terribly.

I suspected the boy we’d pick up in three and a half short weeks would be a different kid; that's what great summer camps do.

I am both a parent of two ( #22526 Matthew and #22926 Katie), an educator, and co-author of The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control of Their Lives. The book tackles some of the reasons behind and offers solutions to what seem to be ever increasing scourges of stress-related conditions of anxiety, depression, and disordered motivation. The solution to stress is not relaxation but resilience, the ability to recover from difficulty and challenge. At a brain-based level, we want our kids to have the sense that a stressor is one that they can handle. Childhood and adolescence offer the opportunity to learn to deal with tolerable stressors, fostering in kids the confidence that they can handle other (and more adult) challenges that will come their way.

Who would have guessed that the solution, at least part of it, might lie on the shores of Lake Champlain?

My son told me his junior year hike was "twelve hours and twenty miles in the pouring rain!" While the hike may have been half that length and really just a drizzle, in his mind, it's a touchpoint. But not so much of "that terrible hike!" but, "what I got through." Again, it’s the sense that matters.

Within clear rules of mealtime, bedtime, inspection, and expectations of "The Other Fellow First," at Camp there is tremendous autonomy, which fosters that sense of control we want. Kids who may be "jocks" in school can explore arts at Brodie or boating from Junior Beach. There aren't school friends to chide you for stepping outside defined roles. No parents asking, "Isn't that a waste of time?" or "Shouldn't you be doing your homework?" But instead JLs, ALs, and leaders asking, "Wouldn't it be cool if..." And, when an art project fails or you fail to clear ANY height on the high jump, there is no parent as upset as the kid, overreacting by trying to "fix things." We all need the opportunity to struggle, to have expectations go unmet, to suffer setbacks, embarrassments, and minor failures and then, with support, to cope. When adults swoop in to do for kids

So, yes, three weeks passed quickly. I smiled broadly as we saw Matthew perched atop a pile of trunks. As we tossed his things into our vehicle, we took note of the new young man we were taking home—smiling and freckled, seemingly untouched by sunscreen the past month. Was he actually taller or just standing taller? Friends gathered round to hug him and say they’d miss him and looked forward to seeing him next year. “Bye, Matt!” “See you later, Matt!” “Have a great year, Matt!” Quizzically, I looked toward him, an eyebrow raised—what happened to Matthew?

He smiled. “Yeah, it’s amazing how much you can change while you’re at camp.”

(Both found out that their memories were very similar, so we can assume it really happened.) LAS is an international boarding school for grades 7-12 based in an American education and English speaking context. He hosted the group for an overnight camp out as well as some exploration in the Grand Teton National Park and some great food. Scott, our former Outdoor Program Director, is now the Executive Director of Slow Food of the Tetons. Thanks, Scott!

COPYCOPY IN NYC By #11264 Mark “Davo” Davenport

I

had the good fortune to finally catch the hottest act in The Big Apple last May at the way downtown club Ulysses— namely the rock'n'roll stylings of CopyCopy. Yes, they are a cover band. But wait, there is so much more. As I walked into the club, I immediately saw a huge crowd of 20- and 30-somethings bobbing up and down in unison to a rendition of Stacey's Mom. On the far end of the room, I found my seat among the 40-60 somethings who share an affiliation with a certain upstate New York summer Camp and fell into the groove. For the next two plus hours straight, the multigenerational audience was treated to one great pop song after another.

CopyCopy was formed in the 39th floor break room at Merrill Lynch in the World Financial Center by Mike Mattes and Jeff Fazio. Jeff’s friend Charlie joined a few years later following a

conversation at a Poly Prep parent’s night. The drummer joined after randomly meeting Jeff at the Montauk Club in Brooklyn. Mike Alicona was brought on in 2018 during an exhaustive search for a lead guitarist. All said, the five of them span three decades in age, three boroughs of NYC living, and a huge range of musical tastes. Most importantly, they all love to rock out for hours on end.

And...and...and that drummer is none other than (drumroll please) Dudley's own fearless tom-tom beating, bass drum thumping, cymbal smashing percussionist, #17185 James Jake "Yappy" Guimaraes! The CopyCopy gigs are a hoot for sure, but made that much more exciting by attending with your Camp buds. IN MEMORIAM #5683 Charles Barnwell "Barney” Straut passed away on April 13, 2019 in Princeton, NJ, at age 93. Barney was at Camp in 1937 and 1939. His son #10464 David and grandson #17664 Charlie both attended Camp. Born in Suffern, NY, Barney grew up in NJ, attended St. Andrews School, and entered Princeton University in 1943. He served in the Army Specialized Training Corps in Europe, returning to Princeton on the GI Bill and graduating in 1949. His career was in banking from 1951 until his retirement in 1997. He had many civic involvements, including Smith College, Planned Parenthood, Princeton Day School and Grandpal Reading Program. Barney married Barbara Sheldon Barry of Washington, DC in 1953. In 1955, they moved to Princeton, where they raised their four children.

Barney is survived by his wife Barbara, their four children and their spouses: David Barnwell Straut (Maureen), Derek Woodhull Straut, Leslie Roe Straut Ward (Grant Murray Ward) and Barbara Sheldon “Shelley” Straut Goldsmith (Graham), nine grandchildren and Barney’s sister Maida Moore.

#6046 John Owen “Bud” Rees Jr., 94, died August 10, 2018 in Manhattan, KA. He was born in Cleveland August 27, 1923 and attended Camp in 1939. A letter from his wife Barbara recalls fond memories of his days at Dudley and of being presented his 75-year pin in 2015. John grew up in Chicago before enrolling in Amherst College. He left college to serve in the U.S. Army Air Forces for three years in the Pacific during WWII. After graduating from Amherst in 1947, John attended U. Chicago Law School and then U. Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where he received an MFA and then doctorate. He taught at Colgate University in New York and the University of Colorado Boulder before joining the English Department at Kansas State in 1965. He taught American literature for 30 years at K-State. From his childhood, he loved fishing for trout in the many streams of New York's Adirondacks, including Elk Lake, a special spot in the high peaks area. John travelled extensively during vacations with his family and he especially enjoyed a sabbatical in Cambridge, England in 1982. Passionate about music, he collected jazz records dating back to the 1920s. John was as kind as he was sharp-witted. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Barbara, of Manhattan; daughter, Katy Rees Carr; son-inlaw, David Carr; and twin grandsons, Owen and Quinlan, of Austin, Texas.

#5735 Don Zeiller passed away on March 15, 2019 in Bedford, TX, at the age of 94. Don was at Camp from 1938 - '47, along with his brother #5736 Mickey.

He was a camper, Aide, K Crew member and Camp’s staff photographer. After high school, Don attended Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration before enlisting in the US Coast Guard in February of 1943. He served as a Torpedoman 2C on the destroyer escort USS Howard D. Crow (DE-252). He was a combat photographer in the Asiatic/ Pacific and European/African Area Campaigns. Don then worked for Life Magazine, and eventually became a manufacturers’ representative, founding his own rep company.

He is survived by his son #9735 Fred Zeiller, daughter Dona Collins, stepsons #8935 Howard Aldendorff, James Chase, Don Chase and stepdaughters Monette Tondu and Donna Womack. Camp Dudley was a very influential and important part of his life and he remained in touch with his camp friends by regularly attending reunions and work weekends into his 80s. Don had a great sense of humor and was one of the most upbeat, positive people you could ever meet. When asked, “How are you?” he always replied, “SUPER!” He will be cremated and buried with his wife Naomi in the Dallas - Fort Worth National Cemetery - receiving a Military Funeral Honors Service.

#6232 Richard Bernard Ris passed away on February 28, 2019 in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dick was born in Dallas, Texas on October 30, 1928, but spent most of his youth in Garden City, Long Island. His dad, #2327 Kenneth Ris attended Camp in 1914 - '15. A 1950 Yale graduate in Mechanical Engineering, he served in the Navy for four years. While stationed in Jacksonville, Dick met his wife of 66 years, Deborah Stoutamire Ris. They relocated to Rockville, Maryland where they raised their four children. Dick worked for Johnson Controls for 41 years, rising to the role of Branch Manager of Johnson Control's DC office. He was recognized as a leader in the Washington, DC metro area construction industry. Dick had a great love for many sports; he was an avid golfer, and loved the Washington Redskins. He and Debbie retired to Sun City Center, FL, in 1991 where he volunteered with the Emergency Squad and the Audubon Society. Dick is survived by Deborah and children Charlotte (Tillmon), #10551 David (Nancy), #10817 Paul and Peter (Jackie), four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

IN MEMORIAM #8559 Bruce K. Bernann died on April 24, 2019 in Greenwich, CT. He was at Camp in 1953 - '54. Wrote friend Charlie Updike, “Bruce and I have been lifelong friends — same age, classmates since kindergarten, tennis partners and opponents, paddle tennis partners and opponents, weddings and more. A very good man and steadfast friend.” A member of Edgemont High School's first graduating class in 1957, Bruce graduated from Colgate and served three years in the Navy. He then embarked on a long and successful career in financial services, most recently at Nordberg Capital. Gifted athlete, staunch partner and formidable opponent, steadfast friend, loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed playing tennis, squash, paddle tennis, golf, ping pong, backgammon and watching the stock market. He is survived by his son, Lowell, daughterin-law Laura, and two grandchildren, all of Greenwich. #9278 Arthur “Artie” Dodge of Westport NY, who was a camper at Dudley in 1958 - '59, died February 22, 2019 as a result of flu complications and a fall.

He was 70. Art attended Westport Central School and SUNY Canton, worked at Dipak Manufacturing Company and then for many years as a lineman at Chazy Westport Communications before his retirement. He also served with dedication on Westport’s Library Board. Art was a skilled craftsman, who built homes, stone walls, and was an accomplished weaver. He had a passion for the land, working in the woods, caring for his land and that of others. He collected antiques, including antique cars and enjoyed regional car shows. He is survived by his longtime partner, Atea Ring, and her four children, his sister, Ann, and brotherin-law, Paul Mahoney, of Westport, and their children, Cynthia White (David), and Mark Mahoney (JoAnn), three grand-nephews and one great-grand-niece. #9137W Barbara O. White passed away following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease on September 26, 2019 in Westport, N.Y. Born in Norwich, CT, Barbara graduated from the Norwich Free Academy, continuing on to the University of Pennsylvania where she received her RN degree. Following graduation Barbara worked at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, private psychiatric hospitals and set up medical departments at Goodwill Industries and Chilton Publishing Co. She was later employed as Store Nurse for B. Altman and Co. in St. David's, PA, where she

met and married her husband of fifty years, Donald (Ken) White Jr. Barbara was predeceased by her parents and sisters, Beth Cummins and Catrina Noyes. She leaves behind her husband #9137 Donald, daughter Kristen Santose and her partner Phil Mendola, grandsons #19182 Justin Floyd, #20837 Jeremy Lacey and #22547 Griffin Santose, brother Brent E. Friends of Camp Dudley On July 19, 2019 Ann Foster passed away after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. She leaves her husband of 61 years, #6707 Douglas Foster, of Williamstown, MA. She also leaves her three children: #13312 Susan Culver of Chicago, IL, #14777 Emily Verbeck of Doylestown, PA, and #12827 James Foster of Atlanta, GA, along with 11 grandchildren, five of whom attended Dudley or Kiniya. She is survived by her brother #6790 John Priesing of Bronxville, NY. She was predeceased by her parents and her oldest child, #11275 David Foster. Originally from Scarsdale, NY, where she graduated from Scarsdale High School, Ann went on to Pembroke College, part of Brown University. Ann and Doug lived in Bronxville for 29 years before moving to Williamstown, where she worked at the Clark Art Institute. A private graveside service for Ann was held on August 2, 2019 at East Deering Cemetery, in NH, which was attended by 21 family members and several close friends.

Mrs. Ellen Burke, of Westport, NY, passed away on April 17, 2019 in Elizabethtown at age 86. Ellen was the wife of #11310 Herb Burke, who served on the maintenance crew from 19721999. She was born on Oct. 29, 1932, in Lewis, NY. She was married to Herbert Burke who survives her. She is survived by her children, son Elmer Lesperance, Pembroke, GA., daughter Linda Martin, Ausable Forks, NY, and son Gordon Lesperance and his wife Carolyn, Derby, VT, daughter-in-law Pam Lesperance, Thurmont, MD, sister Alberta Gentles and husband Joe, Cadyville, NY, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Edward Lesperance, daughter Francis Ellen, son Michael Aaron, and four brothers.

Catherine “Cathy” Otis Farrell, 77, of Brooklyn and Keene, NY, passed away on July 18, 2019 at her summer home in Keene after contending for more than 15 years with what her doctors think was pre-frontal temporal dementia. She was surrounded at her death and the days before it by her husband of 50 years, #9106 Greg Farrell, her sons #14916 Andrew and #15910 Nick Farrell, her daughter-in-law Chloe Farrell, her grandchildren Cormac and Fallon Farrell, her daughter-in-law Krista Van Wart, and her caregiver and friend, Vanecia Johnson. Because of the dementia, she retired in 2004 at age 62 as dean of the Division of Cooperative Education at LaGuardia Community College, where she had been a professor and administrator for 32 years.

She was born and raised in Princeton, NJ, and graduated from Miss Fine’s School in 1960 and from Vassar College in 1964.

She earned two master’s degrees from Columbia. Cathy and Greg lived in Brooklyn, NY, and during summers in Keene in the “yurt village,” which she built with Greg, her boys and 50 friends in 1976. campdudley.org
