You’ve probably noticed by now that the magazine you’re reading is called The Other Fellow First. You might also be curious as to why it’s not called the CD News?

After printing our alumni magazine for nearly a century, the magazine has gone through several rebranding efforts. CDA News, CD News to name a couple.

Over the past two years, we have halted our magazine production and focused on our monthly electronic newsletter, The Other Fellow First E-News.

We have been thrilled with the response to these monthly emails. In addition, we hope that you all have visited our website campdudley.org/theotherfellowfirst to track all of the recent alumni news in the magazine’s absence.

With the magazine coming back into the fold, we made the critical decision to rename the Camp Dudley News, The Other Fellow First Magazine. Not only is it a motto that we all know and love, but both Dudley and Kiniya also share it, just like this magazine.

Letter From Our Directors Dear Friends, If there is one thing we’ve learned during these past two years, it’s that people need people. Human connection, in-person social interaction, and a sense of belonging and love are all a critical part of our overall well being.

Opening our gates on June 26th, 2021 was nothing short of spectacular! As we welcomed campers from vibrant and diverse backgrounds, we witnessed them reconnecting with each other, one person to another, while diving into all that Camp offers; pure magic! It was clear from the arrival of our very first camper that - after laying dormant for 18 months - Camp was once again, just right. It gave our campers the deep human connection they all longed for and needed.

The commitments and decisions we make every day as Directors along with our Board - those that align with our mission, our values, and who we are at the core as a community - keep us steady. We learned this year, through the ongoing commitment to our traditions, programs and the essential elements of the Camp experience, that our desire to make them purposeful and meaningful doesn’t mean they are meant to be unbending.

Returning to the hard copy of The Other Fellow First Magazine after two years of electronic communication feels equally right and timely. For now, having this physical representation of Camp land in your mailboxes is as close as we can get to giving you all a handshake and a hug. But rest assured, our team is working hard to ensure the gates of Dudley and Kiniya will be open to all of you again, too. We cannot wait to welcome our alumni back on campus. We miss you!

And while summer 2021 came with many logistical challenges, once we shifted our perspective from what we knew to what we could create, we could more easily embrace the unexpected opportunities. Perhaps the purpose of being devoted to something important - those traditions and experiences that matter most isn’t found in how things end, but in the way they take shape, and even end up shaping us along the way.

There are some lessons that ring truer with each passing summer, one being that each Camp season goes by fast. Our days unfold quickly. Moments become memories before we even notice they’ve slipped away. Looking back, we remember the defining moments that got us here: the spark that first caught our heart’s interest and the beauty of all that happened between the beginning and the end - along with the courage and belief and intention we all put into our days here. As alumni, part of the allure of Camp is the way it calls us back to the place we knew as kids. We encourage you to check out a glimpse of the enormous summer fun starting on page 10.

As we step into the holiday season - a season so inherently suited for self-reflection and gratitude - care for community is at the top of our list. Purpose isn’t found in one sweeping gesture but in the daily forging of a commitment to the things and the people we love.

This responsibility reminds us that we weren’t meant to walk these paths alone, but to learn from and care for one another, up close and in person.

Recreating our traditions in creative and exciting new ways this summer allowed us to retain the spirit and the essence of Camp while adapting to essential safety requirements. Gathering for Hymn Sing outside under a canopy of stars, performing Wednesday and Saturday night shows on the MOP and Mimi’s Lodge outdoor stages, sharing meals on hot days under tents on main campus - are all tangible glimpses of the daily, magical moments we experienced, too many to count.

We are blessed with an incredible year-round team that works hard every day to do our best as stewards of the place we all love. Know that when the time comes, we will be ready to welcome you back to Camp with open arms.

To the Dudley and Kiniya Community, I hope this reading finds you safe and healthy. I am thrilled to report that our Camps were open for Summer 2021, and we were free of COVID-19. We played ball and knocked it out of the park!

Campers had a blast. A much needed positive experience after all of the disruption and uncertainties experienced in 2020-2021 due to the pandemic.

To that incredible feat, I commend our Directors, Matt Storey and Marnie McDonagh, for their united, steadfast and nimble leadership. Camp was not immune to the many challenges faced by other businesses, academic and health care institutions — staffing crunches, COVID-fatique, and supply-chain backorders. However, with every decision (big and small), our Directors always had the safety of our campers, leaders, staff and the overall community in the forefront of their minds.

They, along with their stupendous team of leaders and staff (year-round and seasonal), did a remarkable job and put their WHOLE heart in it. For that, I and the Board of Trustees, extend our utmost gratitude.

While our Directors were off preparing for and running our Camps during Summer 2021, the Board of Trustees focused on how we shall continue to keep our Camps thriving for the generations to come with a particular eye toward diversity, equity and inclusion. This grew out of strategic planning initiatives, encouragement and contribution from dedicated alumni and a desire to make sure our motto—The Other Fellow First—is alive and well. These are not just words; our motto requires action. This work is not political. Rather, an expression of Camp’s love and concern for all the members of our community.

Over the years, there have been countless individuals who have shared their time and talents in order to elevate our thinking, challenge the status quo, and expand our knowledge. We acknowledge the foundational and integral work of these dedicated people. Following in their footsteps, we have embarked on some hard and meaningful conversations about where we have come from, and where we want to go to: • • •

increase diversity in our community, ensure equitable access to Camp and its many offerings, and promote an environment in which all of our community members know that they are truly respected, valued, and welcomed for who they are.

I hope you will enjoy reviewing Camp’s DEI Action Plan to see the specific steps Camp is committed to taking to move DEI further in our community (discussed further herein on page 9, and can be found at campdudley.org/DEI).

Letter to the Editor Dear Matt, What an honor it was receiving my 50-year pin!! It's more than a place where we all have amazing memories of summers past.

I had the privilege to spend my summers growing up at Dudley and meeting all the amazing people that are etched in all of hearts and minds! Before I was able to attend Camp I had already known the Dudley way. Staying at Brookside I learned the lay of the land and got to meet some locals like the Frisbies and the Vanderhoofs. I fished almost every day at Stacy Brook and Cutler Point.

Then I grew up at the ripe old age of 8 and was ready for my first season as a camper in Poly cabin. I wear this hat all around Tampa, FL. The bucket hat is a tribute to a couple of important people: “The Man, The Legend, and the Myth,” Willie Schmidt; the black stitches in the cap represent Mr. Roland Stichweh (STICH); the Navy Expeditionary Medal presented by President Ronald Reagan, AND the most notable of them all is my Dudley 50 year pin! So the hat is a reminder of my life journey with another notch, my 50-year pin.

Whether I'm at a Bucs game or cutting the grass I wear it more proudly than ever, and when I make my yearly trip to camp in 2021 I will wear my hat high!!

Small World #16321 Dan Lipin, Tarrytown, NY, was climbing Giant Mountain at the end of the 2021 summer season. Once on top, a quick survey of climbers resulted in one of those Dudley small world encounters that happen when you least expect it.

Dan and his family were standing face to face with #15288 Mike and Mac Schloat! The visit didn't last long as both families with their young climbers were eager to get back on the trail. Dan and Mike had just enough time to grab this quick image of the great view they had. #12354 Chris Phelps, Ridgefield, CT, was attending a fundraising event as he was running for a seat on the Inland Wetlands Board in Ridgefield. Sharp eyes led to another Dudley reunion as Chris spotted #19862 Will Haskell among the event's attendees. Will was attending as part of his work in the Connecticut State Senate. #22654 Nate Phelps was also present to witness the chance meeting.

Have you had a small world experience? You know, the kind where you see someone wearing some Dudley or Kiniya swag? ith the cancellation of the CDA Reunion came many disappointments, but fear not! CDA has been working behind the scenes to assure that one of our long standing Reunion traditions, the Person of the Year presentation, will continue uninterrupted. While we regret that we were unable to meet for our annual gathering of the faithful, there is much anticipation about the announcement regarding The Dudley and Kiniya Person of the Year. In 2020, many will remember that the presentation went on despite our canceled reunion. The 2020 People of the Year Award was presented remotely via video to all the essential workers who served during the pandemic—a worthy presentation that allowed this critical tradition to continue.

We had hoped that 2021 would be different, and began the early part of the year considering names of our community members who have shown remarkable commitment and service to Camp across generations.

As the year progressed and Camp planned for the return to in-person camping, it became clear that 2021 would not be “normal.” It was also clear that we wanted to remain steadfast in our commitment to naming a Person or People of the Year.

So, today, we are continuing the time-honored tradition of announcing Camp’s highest award to our broad community. The 2021 Person of the Year goes to the Updike brothers, #7582 Stu and #8276 Charlie, for their faithful service and leading lives that exemplify our motto, “The Other Fellow First.”

While we miss the long and thunderous ovation through Witherbee Hall, we celebrate the fantastic contributions of both men to Camp and to their professions. We hope that each of you will visit campdudley.org/POY to see and hear the heartfelt remarks we prepared to honor Stu and Charlie, and hear us read the plaque, just as we would have done in person. We look forward to personally and publicly acknowledging both these gentlemen when next we gather on the shores of Lake Champlain.

In the meantime, thank you, Stu and Charlie, for the example you have set for all of us. You are living proof of how important this tradition and our motto have become to the Camp community.

CAMP DUDLEY For obvious reasons, the summer of 2021 felt different from any that had come before it, but, probably most importantly, it also came with a deeper appreciation than any that had come before. Our return to campus this past summer saw us come back to all of our favorite activities…dips in the lake, competition on the fields, diamonds, and courts, experiences in the wilderness, Hymn Sing, cheering in the Dining Hall, impactful vespers in the cabin… but it also brought with it a sense of how much we had missed it and how lucky we felt to be returning to it.

It’s hard to sum up any summer into words and this one even more so. However, even though some things were different, the experience at Dudley was exactly the same as it’s been throughout our history. A chance to live our motto every day, surrounded by friends and mentors who make us better.

I love my mom.

Now, why should you care? Well, it has taken me a very long time to be able to say that to other people. When I was in elementary school, almost everyone would get picked up at the end of the day by their mom. Now a quick aside—the typical role of mothers as homemakers is a separate topic, but I cannot even scratch the tip of the iceberg with the time I have today. So, moving on, as much as I loved having my mom come pick me up, I could not and would not express much affection towards her. Other kids would hug their moms when they saw them and hold their hands while leaving the school grounds. Not me. I thought if I showed affection toward my mom, I would be seen as weak. I was already a small skinny kid; the last thing I needed in elementary school was other boys calling me a wuss for loving my momma. Now I have no clue if that would have happened.

But it did not matter. In my head, there was an idea— the idea that it would be the death of me if other guys in my elementary school class knew I loved my mom.

ever, my attitude against public care towards my mom eclipsed my teenage angst. In high school, I grew comfortable with myself. I was lucky to have a supportive environment that helped me overcome my own social insecurities. My confidence grew as strong and positive female advisors of mine helped change the prejudice in my head. Now I have no issues. In fact I am proud to show care towards the most important woman in my life, to walk down the street with her on my arm, to hug her in public, or say to you all that I love my mom.

I do not know where that idea, that perception of masculinity, came from. It likely was a combination of societal norms that I picked up on from TV to watching stereotypical unemotional and uncompassionate men in my life. Regardless of the origin, that idea sat with me all the way til high school. In all areas of my life, I carefully calculated my behavior with or pertaining to my mother. I would not bring her up around my friends.

When I was with my family, I also made sure not to show too much affection to keep behavior patterns consistent. I would even go so far as to put her down to people whose respect I desired. I remember one instance in middle school when a friend of mine said to me, “Your mom talks.” Also, according to Aicher, she makes killer scrambled eggs. A little background for you—my mother loves to talk. She will talk to anyone and everyone; it is one of her greatest traits. One of her favorite parts, when she was working in New York City, was riding the subway and talking to people – learning their stories. But when my friend picked up on this characteristic of hers, my response was something like, “Yeah, she’s weird.”

I would like to end with a quote from Barack Obama: “All of us have to recognize that being a man is first and foremost being a good human. That means being responsible, working hard, being kind, respectful, compassionate. If you’re confident about your strength, you don’t need to show me by putting somebody else down.

Show me by lifting somebody else up.” Thank you.

I was fortunate to have those women in my life in high school to readjust my view on stereotypically female characteristics. Unfortunately, at camp there is a shortage of women who are available to do the same for kids like I was. Leaders, it is our job to work extra hard to provide the same learning experience in our predominantly male culture here. I urge you to do so with me this summer.

Why would I compliment my mother? Moms are not cool, I thought. Moms are compassionate and loving.

I could not be those things, so better not to support those characteristics. Was it sexist? Maybe. I certainly did not think I was sexist, but there may have been some unconscious prejudice towards feminine characteristics.

Sure, plenty of kids and angsty teenagers resent their parents. And I certainly had my fair share of that. How

warded at the end of every summer, The Last Whistle Dedication is one of the highest honors one can receive at Camp Dudley. Presented to a member of our community who shows a devotion and love towards others, and this place we all cherish, and an unwavering commitment to living by the motto, The Other Fellow First.

This year, like so much else, we’re going to do things a bit differently. Ready?

It is my distinct honor to award the 2021 Last Whistle Dedication to our dear friend and beloved member of the Dudley community, #21982 Domanick Walker.

Coming to us from Baltimore, Maryland, Dom has been a valued and prominent member of the community for a little over a decade. Most of you do not know this, but Dom actually has two camp numbers. Originally slated to come as a camper, fate intervened, and it took a few more years for Dom to make it to the shores of Lake

Champlain. Luckily, for all of us, and characteristically arriving “fashionably late,” Dom eventually, and thankfully, graced us with his presence. Arriving in 2010 as a first year leader, Dom walked — or better yet strutted — onto campus, and with his charm, charisma, confidence, and wit, instantaneously won over the hearts of every camper, leader, and staff member, quickly becoming an integral part of our community. Camp has not been the same since.

Dom, however, was not immediately sold on the whole “Dudley thing,” memorably calling camp “the weirdest place on earth” in a chapel talk. Fortunately for us, in his words, by his third year as a leader, everything clicked into place, and with the exception of one summer away, Dom has been joining us in Westport for over a decade. As he will often remind people, Dom was always a leader in the Plebes and will accept no alternative as “the best division at camp.” Dom was immediately the person in the division that everyone looked up to, and wanted to be friends with, and in a testament

to what a special person he is, he somehow managed to find the time for everyone.

As the summers passed, his vibrant spirit, often complimented by a healthy and endearing dose of sass, made him a natural leader, and Dom’s prominence and presence in the community quickly grew beyond just the Plebes, with him becoming one of the best known figures at camp, the go-to person for guidance and advice, and culminating in 2012 with him winning the esteemed Pat Peavy Leadership Award, an honor selected by his peers and given annually to a leader who best exemplifies the care, integrity, and daily practice of putting “the other fellow first.”

Once Dom finished his remarkable tenure as a leader, he made the switch to staff and further expanded the use of his vast skill-set to make Dudley the best place it could possibly be. Dom joined the Witherbee team and used his talents to direct both shows and chorus, teach dance, and assist James Mayo with the gospel choir. His contributions were immensely valuable, and the arts department was all the better having him on their team.

Also in his time on staff, Dom became heavily involved in leadership development working to foster talent amongst Aides, JLs, and ALs, and helping Leaders to become the best version of themselves.

This summer, Dom has taken on a new role, and his most important yet, as Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, working on both sides of the lake with campers, leaders, staff, and our board of trustees to help make camp a more welcoming and inclusive place for all. In this position, Dom has made it his primary mission to make Camp Dudley the best version of itself.

With his unwavering commitment to teaching all of us how to create an equitable experience for every single person that walks through the gates, we have seen first hand how quickly positive change can take place when someone as talented and passionate as Dom provides the leadership needed to make things happen.

Throughout the years, Dom has served in many roles at Dudley, and I’m sure he’ll continue to impress us all by serving in many more. While he has been asked to do some of them, many times Dom will take the initiative to fill a hole where he finds one, stepping up because he cares and not because he is asked to do so.

But, while his larger-than-life personality and impressive camp resume might be what he is most recognized for by everyone here, those who know him best know that Dom’s most important role is as a mentor and friend, shining brightest in the quiet moments. Whether

it is helping with a chapel talk, a difficult situation, or if you just need to blow off some steam, Dom is always there as a helping hand, or an open ear, to anyone who needs it, and I am sure every leader and staff member here has sought his counsel at some point during their tenure.

No matter how busy he is, Dom is always available when you need him. We are all coming off of one of the most trying and challenging chapters of our lives, and while Dom’s open door and being there has always been what has made him so special, this summer, it has been more important than ever. Dom has said it simply, “I do not want people to suffer,” and that sentiment is at the core of who he is as a person, and why his generous spirit is such an important thing to everyone here.

Dom’s close friend and first half staff member, Caleb Florence, summed it up perfectly by saying, “Dom is someone I look up to in my life for his ability to meet people where they are, no matter the circumstance, and for his ability to foster a genuine connection and deep trust between all parties.”

Finally, perhaps Dom’s most defining trait is that he recognizes the potential for greatness in those who may be overlooked by others, and especially those who don’t recognize it in themselves. Dom’s intentional investment in the well-being and success of others is uniquely powerful, and it is the reason he develops such profound and meaningful relationships with everyone he encounters. There is not a person Dom has met that he has not seen the greatness in and helped them to cultivate it.

Dom, you have profoundly impacted the lives of every single person at camp this summer, and summers past, whether they know it or not, and we are beyond blessed to have you here. Your legacy at Dudley is nothing short of iconic, and I can speak for everyone in saying we know you’re just getting started, and we can’t wait to see what’s to come. Thank you for all that you do, for being here, and for being the best friend and brother that everyone sitting here could ever ask for. Your commitment to Camp Dudley, its people, and living by The Other Fellow First is unmatched, and we are all the better as a community having you amongst us.

What a wonderful summer – being immersed in nature, exploring new programs, making new friends and trying new things. As I pause to reflect on it all, my heart is full of gratitude for our staff, for our campers and particularly for our camp parents who entrusted their children to us.

As the days ahead grow cooler and fall turns to winter, my hope for each of our campers is that they will not only remember their camp experiences with fondness but that they’ll build upon them, continuing to take charge and go for it, learn from mistakes, set goals and pursue them and enjoy the company of new acquaintances who quickly become friends.

Chapel Talk

G

ood morning. It’s an honor to be on this stage today representing the Kiniya Outdoors department, so I’m going to talk to you about the Arts.

If I am religious about anything, I’m religious about language and the human voice, religious about the music we make just by speaking to one another. For me, there is sanctity in the fact that, until the Renaissance, the voice was thought to be sent forth by the heart rather than caused by breath across muscles in the throat, meaning the voice was believed to be the direct vehicle of desire. I find holiness in the knowledge that a whisper is used for the smallest and most intimate secrets (“darling, it smells like you might have stepped in something”) while a yell is saved for the most emphatic and necessary statements (“no dad, I won’t take out the trash!”). I’m pious about the human voice because the oldest continuously used words in almost any language happen to be the first words we most often speak as infants, in English these being mama and da-da. I’m religious about words because of their sources, for instance the word river sharing its root with rival because a rival is someone standing in the same stream as you.

If communication is the means by which our inner selves can be shared with others, then language is the banquet table where we may meet to commune and revel together. To that end, my head is filled to the tipping point with memorized scraps from an angel’s brigade of poems, each reaching into my soul to echo onto the longest and most pure moments of my life: words from Basho (“Even in Kyoto— / hearing the cuckoo's cry— / I long for Kyoto.”), and Muriel Rukeyser (“I am in the world / to change the world / my lifetime / is to love to endure to suffer the music”), and Frank Stanford (“A bird sick of its tree—I

despair.”), and Elizabeth Bishop (“—Yesterday brought to today so lightly! / (A yesterday I find almost impossible to lift.)”), and Hafiz (“When my wife is in the city / and I’m home / I want to cry / No book has ever kissed me / like she does”). These poets have been among the dead for dozens and even hundreds of years, but by using my voice to fill the air with their words, I can give them renewed life, conjuring them before you as if they were here speaking today.

Yes, like William Butler Yeats, I believe words have actual magical powers: the ability to single-handedly raise cities, bridge chasms, move mountains, instill love, change the course of history both past and to come, and even if that sounds insane to you, I think you would agree there isn’t a magician in the world who can produce a rabbit from a top hat without saying “abracadabra” first. All of us here are disciples of the other fellow first, meaning we know and have observed ourselves the ways a kind word can change perspective, while a cruel remark can bust hearts.

One of Kiniya’s finest poets, Mia Lambo, once remarked to me that “life is better with a sonic accompaniment,” and it’s true that sound itself—birdsong, car horns, fireworks, laughter—beckons for and holds our attention, asks us to stir. As poet Jamaal May once noted in an interview, we turn up the music that moves us because increasing the volume until we can feel it transforms the closed systems of our abdomens into resonance chambers, allowing the vibrations to fill and echo throughout our bodies. And yet each of us already contains a vital symphony—woodwinds of breath, percussion line of heartbeat, string sections of seething nerve impulses, and brass rush of blood coursing through every inch of us—waiting only to be released through our voices.

I didn’t always feel this way. For most of my high school and college years, I lived by two aphorisms: “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”

-Robert Frost The first quote, from Maurice Switzer, places value in silence as a means of hiding one’s idiocy—if you speak up, everyone is going to see just how foolish you really are.

The second, from Robert Frost, can be read in part as saying that those who are the loudest are also the ones who have the least of value to say. Taking these quotes to heart, I tried to move through my teenage life as quietly as possible, hoping no one would notice me. In a world in which everyone seemed bigger, faster, and smarter than me, silence was my tool of protection, my path of avoidance and least resistance. Everywhere I went, I held my voice to myself. The wallpaper was warm and inviting, and I found myself to be good at blending into it. After all, what did I have to say, really? How could I possibly be one of those people with perspectives worth sharing, ideas that might resonate with others?

Then, I started my first job at a summer day camp in my hometown, and quickly realized silence would be a problem. The camp director took one look at the sullen, quiet, and shamefully awkward 17-year-old I was at the time and thought: this kid will be perfect with the 5-year-olds.

Yes, I somehow ended up leading the youngest campers in the entire camp, a crack team of near-toddlers who held superhuman abilities for crying, screaming, and pooping all at once. Silence was not going to work for them.

So, I gave myself permission to use my voice, and I discovered that I had a gift for loudness. My ability to project became a tool to maintain attention (“hey, it looks like the director is saying something”), spread information (“lunchtime is over”), and mesmerize dozens of children of for entire minutes at a time through troubadour-level master performances of song (“I SAID A BOOM CHICKA BOOM”). My voice became so integral to the day-to-day function of camp, that in my evaluation at the end of that first summer, the camp director described me as the heartbeat of camp, a generous phrase I still think about often, a full half-of-my-life later. Today, if someone says that I am too loud (which happens more often than I’d like to admit), I tell them that my voice is my way of reminding the universe that I am still here, continuing my work to create joy and shift perspective using a few sound waves.

Earlier I offered two quotes that affected my presentation to the world, and I’m going to add a third, from 20th century American poet Muriel Rukeyser: “What would happen if one woman told the truth about / her life? / The world would split open.”

When I first joined the staff at Camp Kiniya in 2018, I was astonished to find a community of girls who not only sang the same songs I used as a day camp counselor in Connecticut, but who bowel-shakingly belted them out at a deafening volume that made my ears bleed. I became a witness to the profound loudness of those several-hundred young women, many of you among them, leaving me so in awe that I actually preferred to sit back and fully take in the music, rather than add in my own noise to it.

Through each chorus of “A rick-a-bamboo”, *wait for line to be repeated* “and I hope it don’t peel!” *wait again* and yes, “I SAID A BOOM CHICKA BOOM!” I heard a group of young people who, as I had, were finding the value and power of their voices. It’s still a wonder to me that the walls of Coleman didn’t crumble under the raw energy you brought to your tables.

Within the last two years we have lived through a time in which the voices and very breath of others could pose real danger to us, just as our voices and breath could be dangerous to them, but please know that through my loneliest and most frightening moments of the pandemic, it was your earth-splitting voices, and looking forward to being in their presence again, where I found warmth and hope.

Friends, your voices are going to change the world, and, in case you don’t believe me, I will offer as evidence that your voices have already changed me.

Hanna mentioned in her introduction my employment, serving the youth and families of Vermont by working to teach life skills and build communities so that children and teens can remain in their homes with their parents, their foster caregivers, or their adoptive parents. When I praise a child’s progress in learning to live through hardship, it is your voices I hear echoed in my voice. When I offer words of compassion to soften an emotional blow, the deafening music of your songs whispers into the warmth of my words. And when I share a horrendously awful dad joke, your groans and laughter mix in with those of the little ones I’m hoping to nurture. Always remember, your voice has meaning. Your voice has value. You do not need permission to use your voice to uplift yourself and those around you. Thank you.

hen I came away from my interview with Mollie Farnham-Stratton camper #22406 at a tiny little coffee shop in NH, I knew I had just met someone special! Recruiting for the ideal person to become the Director of Kiniya’s Outdoors Program at the time, it took only two hours for me to know that I had found the perfect match!

Having been introduced to Camp Dudley by her now-husband Bill Stratton camper #15069, Mollie joined the staff at Dudley’s Hike Hut in 2011, while simultaneously working towards her Masters in Social Work & Outdoor Education from the University of New Hampshire.

Above all, Mollie has helped nurture the positive, authentic and supportive community we love today. She is a loving and supportive presence in all of our daily lives at Kiniya and a constant role model and mentor to all.

During her time at Dudley, Mollie was tasked with redesigning and reengineering the outdoor Curriculum for the Aides. As with anything Mollie takes on, the resulting experience had appropriate challenges, innovative activities, and lots of room for self-reflection and learning for the young leaders. Mollie loved her time at Dudley and was intrigued by the possibility of joining us at Kiniya to continue her career in outdoor education.

With the combination of her Outdoors experience, her institutional Dudley knowledge, and her Masters in Clinical Social Work, Mollie accepted the position to join our small yet mighty Kiniya year-round Team in 2014 and has been a valued and loved team member ever since.

Upon arrival, she dove right into all aspects of planning and execution to create the best possible Outdoor Program that we could deliver. She was instrumental in the design of our Challenge Course Curriculum and the training that went in annually to ensure we were prepared to offer the highest quality program possible.

A skilled facilitator and teacher, her commitment to experiential learning can be seen anytime she is with a group. She models all aspects of the Challenge course contract: Be Safe, Be Committed, Be responsible, Be respectful, and Have Fun. Through the years, Mollie has balanced her role as Outdoor Education Director and Camp Social Worker masterfully, supporting all of us emotionally and continuing to share her deep love for the outdoors.

She has worked tirelessly in these past seven years to enhance the overall mission by providing services that strengthen camp/family/community & support. She has worked in direct support of me and our Boys Camp Director, Matt Storey, as a sounding board and confi-

Frisbie Farm Joins the Dudley Community

C

amp Dudley has had the chance to expand its physical real estate typically once during a generation. It was 1891 when Camp moved to Westport. In 1907, generous donors’ gifts helped Camp purchase the additional properties that became our permanent home and Main Campus. In 1939, 292 acres of the Stacy Brook area became part of Camp and provided wilderness experiences without traveling into the high peaks. And now, more than 80 years later, we have once again expanded our property to enrich our boys' camping experiences further.

The purchase of the Frisbie Farm has been considered several times through the years. Each time it was given consideration, it just didn’t seem to be the right time... until 2021. Presented with a unique opportunity, the Board of Trustees considered the possibility. It directed Matt Storey to proceed with making an offer on the Farm to the north of the main Westport Campus. The time was right, and in April 2021, the 178 acres that had been considered so many times previously became part of Camp Dudley. While Camp has no plans to make it a “working farm” at this time, it did offer many opportunities to the community in 2021.

The Outdoor Program was able to take advantage of the fields and wooded areas of the Farm immediately. Our leaders worked with the Hike Hut team to establish three new overnight locations. One spot, perched on the property’s high ground, was called “Moo-Moo-Meadows” and became a favorite of the Cubbies. Another new campsite located near the property’s stream was called “The Glen” and offered sheltered seclusion to cabins that selected that location. The third site was nicknamed “The Range” and came with preplanned golf as a cabin activity. The beginnings of the disc golf course began to emerge this summer and will undoubtedly grow in the future. It was even better and certainly closer than traveling to the Stacy Brook Country Club!

Speaking of Stacy Brook, the Farm’s fields provided the access we have needed to launch hikes directly into the Stacy Wilderness. Every Junior and Senior cabin hiked to the Stacy yurts or lean-tos so we could maintain our hiking program without ever having to get in a van! Not only did the boys have a great experience, but we were able to take advantage of HUGE savings in staff time and fuel costs that are required to support transportation into the Adirondack mountains and lakes during a summer where every resource was precious.

The 2021 leaders gave up much to be with us this summer. Their promise to remain on campus throughout the summer certainly contributed to our success with campers. But having the Frisbie Farm and the new farmhouse available as places and spaces where they could hang out and spend their days off and evenings relaxing was an incredible gift. These spaces ultimately contributed to keeping campers safe and offered leaders the opportunity to be together in meaningful ways. The Frisbie Farm inside the “Dudley Bubble” was critical to our success this summer.

Some have said the best views of the Dudley Dome are from the center of the Farm’s Fields. They would be right as the view towards each horizon is unfettered by tall pines. The wildlife on the property is extensive, leading some to consider nature trails that offer insights into local flora and fauna.

Deer, turkey, quail, and grouse have all been spotted, in addition to the foxes, gray and black squirrels, and chipmunks.

The property provides a natural buffer to Camp’s northern boundary and a huge potential for future generations to discover and build, but only when the time is right. As yet one more example of the property’s potential, Camp was able to offer the Boquet Valley Central School cross-country team their first-ever home course! The athletes could not be more excited to have a home venue for their training and events. The course rambles through the fields, woods and even crosses a new bridge over the stream on the Farm!

We knew there would be potential for trails, but little did we expect this added opportunity to present itself so soon. We have high hopes that the current cross-country route will be available this winter for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

The property has been largely paid for by friends and alumni who have been interested in this project and stepped forward with generous support. There is still the opportunity to contribute to this once-in-a-lifetime investment.

Plant and Property Upgrades at Camp Kiniya By #24014 Tom Brayden

T

he summer of 2020 was a new experience for all of us. Nobody knew what the future held in store for us, but the Kiniya maintenance team was ready to make the most of what we had. We managed to stay very busy all summer improving the grounds and buildings with mainly what we had on hand.

We used our woodworking equipment to harvest trees on our property and transformed them into material we could use to renovate numerous buildings around Camp. We caught up on deferred maintenance projects such as staining, pressure washing, and growing grass in places it had never grown before. In our unbiased opinion, Camp was looking the best it ever has for the arrival of our 2021 campers!

Pioneer is one of our oldest buildings left standing on camp. It has had many uses in the past ranging from a camper cabin, staff housing, and more recently, storage. We gutted the interior, installed new lighting, tongue and groove siding, and new windows. It has been transformed into our woodworking shop, complete with a planer, router table, and dust extraction system.

3 We were able to construct a homemade wood kiln on the backside of one of our garages. This allows us to quickly (1-2 weeks) dry out the new boards cut on our sawmill and put them to use. Typically it can take up to a year for wood to season if it is left to dry on its own.

The Kiniya Outdoor Barn (KOB) is where we run our hiking, canoeing, farm to plate, climbing, and challenge course programs. The old metal roof needed repair, with numerous leaks and even a few unintended “skylights” where the sheet metal had blown off. Instead of completely replacing it, we reattached all the metal sheets using 5,000+ roofing screws. After it was secure, we coated the roof with a special paint/sealant.

We are happy to report that there were no leaks this past summer!

The old tack room is the heart of the KOB and was in desperate need of renovation. We took out one of the walls to create a more open-concept space.

Tongue and groove siding was installed, and the bathroom was completely renovated. New lighting and a sliding glass door were also installed to brighten up the space.

A Rare Glimpse into the 1940s at Dudley

amper #4918 is Bill Denhard. Bill Lives in Peabody, MA. He attended Camp from 1932 - 1941, starting at the age of 12. Bill credits Camp with introducing him to the art of photography in 1933. Bill’s images appear in the first Last Whistle of 1938 when he recalls taking the cabin photos for the editor, #5620 Norm Ludlow. For the next four years, campers enjoyed Bill’s terrific photographs in The Last Whistle.

In Spring 2021, he shared some of his scrapbook images and portraits with the Camp Archives. His donated photos and scrapbook pages include some never-before-seen scenes. Bill’s amazing photographs captured all areas of camp life with vividness and clarity. We are pleased to share this rare glimpse of a bygone era with you. In case you are wondering, Bill turned 101 on July 7, 2021, and was in great spirits the last time he talked with Westport staff and remembers the Camera Hut in the approximate location of where today’s Lost and Found building is located.

Take a Fresh Look at the Archives

A Conversation with Dom, Dave, Ace, and Lora By #21982 Dom Walker

T

his past summer while working at Camp, #10555 Dave “LangFu” Langston shared an updated version of Camp’s old postcard file that was created from images held in the Camp Archives. I was amazed as I flipped through the online images. It was truly a “walk into our past.” After a short conversation with Fu, I decided that I wanted to learn more about the work that was currently being done in the Archives to preserve our history.

I found out that #7289 Ace Scharges and #17855 Lora Langston are the two individuals who are currently active workers in the Camp’s archives. Housed in MacLean Lodge, the archives hold hundreds of old files, photos, and other documents that illustrate the history of Camp.

Ace and Lora have gathered once a week for the past few years to continue the sorting and cataloging process. Ace is currently working on scanning as many of the slides as possible while Lora continues the process of sorting the old photos into categories.

One of the early archive projects completed not too long ago was the digitizing of all CD News, Last Whistles, and Spirits. This allowed the archive team to continue their work remotely even during the pandemic and the summer of 2021 when they could not be on campus.

They have been able to begin the process of creating a searchable index of CD News articles dating back to 1937. Fascinated by the work that Ace and Lora were doing, I asked them to respond to a few questions that I think are important as we bring a renewed focus to our history. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did.

Dom: Tell me a little about yourself. What is your connection/affiliation to Camp? #7289 Ace - I started as a camper in 1946. I proceeded up the leadership ranks and was a D-Head in 1951 and 1952. In 1984 I was president of the CDA and Chairman of the centennial reunion. In 1985 I was selected as a member of the Board of Managers. For the past 7 years, I have been working in the Dudley archives one day a week.

a camp my daughter was attending had an extensive archives. Thus the idea—I made a recommendation to the board and it was approved. I then began my active participation in the ongoing progress of the Dudley archives.

Lora - I’ve always loved libraries and books—their history, variety, and organization. During my career, I’ve worked in public and school libraries where building and regional history really tell a story. Though not formally trained as an archivist, I have an appreciation for historical documents and their preservation.

Why do you think it is important to preserve Dudley's history?

Since Camp Dudley is the oldest continuously operating camp in the United States, it is important that we record the creation, development, and traditions of camp, reflecting the tremendous effort and vision of so many individuals through the years. We then are better able to answer questions from campers, parents, alumni, and researchers.

What are some cool things that you've learned since doing the job?

We’ve learned just how influential #1698 Condict W. Cutler was in the development of Camp. #310 H.C. “Chief” Beckman was a leader; Cutler was a visionary.

In 1887, the sons of Thomas Alva Edison (Thomas Jr. and Willie) attended Camp; unfortunately, camp numbers are unavailable.

The Dudley Doings was founded in 1905, appearing in print for the first time in 1907. Copies were sold for five cents each or 25 cents for the season.

Dudley purchased its current campus site, known as “shore acres” in 1908. The original 65-acre site was purchased for $18,000. Various pieces of land were added as Camp expanded over the years.

In 1930 the first three cabins—Iroquois, Andrews, and Huron—were built.

#17855 Lora - I have supported and worked for Camp as a parent, spouse, staff member, and volunteer (Archives 2018) since the summer 1999 season. Of all the camp jobs I’ve had, working in Brodie and volunteering in the Archives are my favorites.

When did you find out you liked collecting history/ archiving?

Ace - I have always been interested in history and Dudley's has always intrigued me. In 1984 I found that

The Scholarship Fund was started in 1925.

What is “Pink Music?” In 1903-1906, a reference was made by George Peck to “Pink Music” used in the Dudley cheer. It was a non-alcoholic, pink fruit juice called Claret Lemonade. It was called “Pink Music” because its name sounded like “clarinet.”

Who wrote the Dudley Hymn? (#5304 Harry Taylor, 1935)

Talk about the process of archiving?

Finding and gathering material to be archived is the first step. Many others initiated work on this process in years prior to the start of our recent work: #15289 Lee Scharges, #7532 Paul Grinwis, #10264 Brian Mahoney, #14508 Peggy Bolster, #8804 John and #18204 Martha Storey, #9675 Dave West, #11541 Jack and #12082 Patrick Butler, #10555 Dave Langston, to name a few. We have built on their efforts and are grateful for all they have done to preserve Camp history. Once the material is at hand, it needs to be sorted and organized. It is then indexed for the catalog and preserved with the appropriate archival method. The end result is a computerized, searchable catalog.

Has this been a difficult task since you started?

The sheer volume of material—the number of slides, photos, and documents for instance—can be overwhelming. The task of categorizing and cataloging takes thoughtful consideration and time, but it is enjoyable because we learn more about Camp’s history with every project.

How can interested Dudleyites get involved in preserving its history?

An interested person should first be familiar with the online resources currently available from the Archives— The Last Whistle, CD News magazines, and the postcard collection. (You can find the online archive at: campdudley.org/archives.) People can assist in obtaining missing material needed by the archives. While we have sets of The Last Whistles, The Spirit, and CD News magazines,

some information regarding Dudley Doings and various Big Shows (2006-2019) is incomplete. When on campus, ask to take a tour of the Archives and view the timeline photo panels displayed in MacLean Lodge or through the archive website.

We are always discovering fun little nuggets of information. Here are a few: • • • •

Board was $5.25 per week in 1897.

In 1910, the camp management deemed it wise not to permit card playing at any time, on the way to and from camp or during the camp season.

Besides all the other sports in 1908, a “Quoits” tournament was held. Quoits is from an ancient Greek game like horseshoes and ring toss.

The Dudley Chapel was dedicated in 1909 at its current setting and became the center of Camp’s spiritual activities.

The Archives contain records of Dudley songs, old movies, slides, and other memorabilia.

All the plaques that we have found around Camp are catalogued.

Opportunities of All Kinds By #25075 Leslee MacKenzie Development and Alumni Relations Chair

I

t has been over a year since we have been able to deliver in-print updates on camp activities. I thought it might be interesting to share a recent conversation with a couple of alumni. The conversation started with a straightforward question, "So, Leslee, what is going on in the Dudley and Kiniya development world during the pandemic?"

Wow! Where to start? There are so many opportunities that it is hard to know exactly where to begin, but let's kick it off with the 2021 Annual Fund. After the incredible year of fundraising during 2020, we went right back to work on January 1, 2021, and pointed our sights at our highest Annual Fund goal ever—$900,000. While we are making good progress towards that target, we rely on our community during the last quarter of the year to push us to a successful conclusion. The Annual Fund appeal is indeed our area of greatest need. It is the primary source of scholarship funds and offers support to leadership development and facility maintenance.

This year with the opportunity to bring the adjacent Frisbie Farm under the Dudley umbrella, we stepped forward with an aggressive goal to raise $600,000 to purchase the farm. So far this year, we have received commitments of more than $505,000 and hope to close that campaign by year-end. Opportunities to be one of the families to get us to the goal still exist. Next comes the conclusion of the Building for the Future Capital Campaign. This campaign, you will recall, provided significant capital improvements at both Dudley and Kiniya while boosting the endowment with more than $1,000,000 new dollars. While we are not actively soliciting new gifts for this campaign, we are working to ensure that all pledged gifts are fulfilled when the campaign concludes in 2022. We are well on our way with $9,852,166 collected towards our pledged amount of $10,212,914.

The opportunity to make a deferred gift to Camp through estate planning offers an extraordinary way to impact future campers significantly. Individuals who share their intention to make an estate gift are part of a group we call the Beckman Society. Members have pledged support from their estates to Camp or have contributed to the endowment held by the Camp Dudley Foundation. These gifts contribute to the future well-being of Camp and will provide support for generations.

Another opportunity to increase the impact of your gift is to take advantage of employer-sponsored matching gift programs. Camp Dudley Foundation – Stepping into a Bigger Role By #12764 ​​Chris Perry,

he summers of 2020 and 2021 have been anything but normal in our own lives and also in the history of our Camps. The impact of COVID-19 has been felt around the world and has even stretched to the shores of Lake Champlain. Perhaps you have wondered, “How did Camp Dudley and Camp Kiniya survive after a year with no on-campus programming and all our tuition payments refunded?” The leadership and dedication of our directors, Marnie and Matt, was never more apparent than during this crisis. The diligence of our Board of Trustees and the generosity of the Dudley family was never more critical to Camp’s financial survival and ultimately to our safe and successful reopening in the summer of 2021.

A lesser known, but equally important, pillar for Camp’s benefit and for navigating through the Champ-infested waters of the past year has been the Camp Dudley Foundation.

What is the Foundation (CDF)? The CDF was established by the Camp Board of Trustees (BOT) back in 2013. The CDF has an independent board separate from the Board of Trustees. The CDF’s primary function is to be stewards of Camp’s endowment. With a separate functioning board, the CDF operates as a supporting organization outside the dayto-day operating responsibilities of the BOT, but we both serve with parallel mandates “to support the mission” of our Camps.

As stewards of Camp’s endowment, the CDF works specifically to ensure that the long-term assets that have been entrusted to the Foundation will be there to provide for our Camps in times of crisis (such as the summer of 2020) while ensuring that those assets will continue to grow and be available to provide for our Camps’ needs for generations to come. The CDF works with the Development and Business office of Camp to monitor and report on 43 different restricted funds established with gifts of all sizes with donor mandates to serve Camp in perpetuity, most notably in the areas of scholarship, leadership, facilities, and unrestricted support to Camp.

When the difficult and necessary decision was made by our directors and the BOT to postpone on-campus operations in the summer of 2020 due to the global COVID-19 outbreak, the CDF moved into action to work with the rest of Camp’s leadership to preserve the financial viability of Camp’s sustained operations. Faced with the reality of having to return all of the 2020 tuition payments, the CDF

sought to provide backstop financing to Camp to maintain their current staff and hopefully prepare for a summer of 2021. The CDF responded to requests from the BOT and Camp’s financial officers to provide up to a $3MM line of credit to Camp to borrow funds as needed to maintain payroll and operations until such time that Camp was back on its feet and would be able to begin repaying any borrowed funds back to the CDF and Camp’s endowment. While there were commercially viable loans potentially available to the BOT, there were no options that could respond as swiftly or as favorably as the CDF. In addition, the CDF voted and agreed to expand the annual endowment draw from 4.0% to 4.5% for a period of time to assist Camp to cover short-term needs at the BOT’s discretion.

Those immediate allowances by the CDF allowed Camp to take a deep breath and assess the impact of the pandemic and the near-term options of expense reductions and pros-

pects for a safe reopening in 2021. Aided by government mandated Payroll Protection Program (PPP) loans to maintain staffing levels and the generous response of the Dudley family, Camp has been successful to date in avoiding the need to tap that CDF $3MM line of credit through diligent financial management. That generous and unprecedented response from the Dudley family also inspired the CDF to dig even deeper for our Camps in 2020. When early indications along with the PPP funding revealed that Camp might not need to touch the CDF line of credit as aggressively as initially feared, the CDF sought to match the generosity of the Dudley family with additional support to help fully avert the financial crisis.

As Camp’s Annual Fund was tracking through the summer of 2020 to be a record-breaking year, the CDF agreed to provide up to $600,000 of matching funds for all donations received by 12/31/20 that eclipsed the BOT’s AF goal of $850,000. Not only did you respond to Camp’s moment of great need, but you responded with donations at levels never seen before in the history of our Camps. You reached the lofty goal of $850,000 of AF support by the fall of 2020 and you did not stop there. Donations continued to flood into the Camp office right through the year-end—so much that you reached a new Annual Fund record of $1.59M which released all $600K of matching funds from the CDF. Camp’s financial operations have returned to “normal” as much as any of our lives have returned to “normal” in 2021.

Camp has incurred no new debt as a result of the pandemic shutdown in 2020, so our financial crisis has been averted for now. The CDF remains committed to be there for Camp when needed most. Our endowment can be viewed as a “rainy day” fund that can provide for Camp at times of great need and challenge. Such was the situation in the summer of 2020 when Camp faced our first year without tuition in 135 years! While we feared the CDF would have to go to much more drastic measures to support Camp, the CDF was delighted to serve its mission and we are confident that the generations of donors to the Camp endowment would agree it was an important time to lean on the endowment to avert the crisis.

We continue to provide the BOT with an available $3MM line of credit that has thankfully not been needed to support Camp’s finances. With all of that support to Camp by the CDF, we are happy to report that the endowment has rebounded with the strong markets and stands at just under $15MM. We are excited by the prospects of the CDF being able to serve Camp for generations to come. A gift to the Camp Dudley Foundation is akin to planting a tree under whose boughs you shall never sit but shall offer shade to the future generations. May we continue to serve our great Camps for generations to come.

So, where do we stand 18 months after the first reported cases of COVID-19 were revealed in the U.S.? While the endowment dipped initially down to below $13MM levels at the start of the crisis, the CDF has provided Camp

I

have heard for years that September was the best month of the year at Dudley, and more broadly in the North Country, but I have never had the chance to experience it.

Ever since I was a camper there has always been a sense of mystery about Camp once everyone left. I’m sure I’m not alone in reminiscing about the past summer, or summers before it, while sitting in a classroom or an office. I would find myself wondering what was going on up at Dudley at that moment. Had the leaves changed? Was main campus blanketed with snow? Was anyone even still there? All those years I wondered about what was going on during the other 10 months of the year at the place where I have so many incredible memories. That feeling only grew in 2020 during the pandemic, when I, like much of the world, was at home on seemingly never-ending Zoom calls, and when in-person camp was canceled for the first time since 1885.

It was at this time too, with so much time stuck inside, that I longed more than ever to be at Dudley with the fresh air, open spaces, Lake Champlain on one side and the Adirondacks on the other.

Fast forward to August 2021 when I was presented with the opportunity to live at camp this fall. It certainly did not disappoint. We all know what a special place Dudley is in the summer, but as the leaves have changed color and a fall crispness has entered the air, it has only gotten more beautiful. Being able to finish a work day and then go on a walk around main campus or Frisbie Farm, or sit down on the Suter porch and read a book has been a unique experience, made even better by having all that the North Country, Adirondacks, and Lake Champlain have to offer right at my doorstep.

And I finally have the answer to that lifelong question about what happens at Dudley after the final Hymn Sing, when the cannon has gone off for the last time, and everyone has gone home. Turns out, quite a lot.

In the last few weeks, Camp has played host to several soccer tournaments, including one with over a thousand people in attendance (truly a sight to behold), a Boquet Valley Central School alumni homecoming night soccer game on the Hell Field under the lights, a cross country meet on the new Frisbie Farm property, a week with students from New Canaan Country Day School, ropes course and team-building with the students from the local school, and more. In addition to all of that, every day the soccer teams come and use the fields for their daily practices. This includes the Boys Varsity Soccer team, coached by our own #15017 Evan George and his assistant coach #23188 Tom Mero. 11 of the 14 players on the team have camp numbers, and the third coach is a camp parent! As I am writing this, I am looking out the window at the Yum Yum tree just finally starting to

change color, one of the last holdouts still hanging on to its green summer leaves, as one of the soccer teams holds its daily practice beneath it.

It has also been great watching the maintenance team and all that they continue to do long after the summer is over.

We all know that they are among the hardest working people at Camp during the summer, putting in all their effort to keep Dudley looking impeccable. I have witnessed first hand how that commitment stretches into the year. From shoring up all the facilities for winter to working on projects to make Camp even better for the next summer, they are still here five days a week, caring for this place we all cherish. In addition to maintaining our beautiful campus and facilities, they have also been hard at work on some special projects. One in particular whose progress I have loved watching is a bridge that #23724 Scott Farrell and the crew built for the new Cross Country course on Frisbie Farm.

The bridge, which is made out of a fallen tree and a repurposed dock from the old Swim Point, provides a path over another up-stream section of Tute Creek. It looks fantastic and is ready to be used for years to come.

The office staff, with our director #13804 Matt Storey, #15017 Evan George, #10555 LangFu, #19524 Dawn Gay, #22830 Anita Johnson, #15877 Brendan Loughman, and #22827 Jesse Smith are still here as well, working hard to wrap things up from this past summer and already looking ahead to summer 2022. Also on campus all year is #16999 Jess Storey. In addition to working with community members on group fitness, Jess leads team workouts with whoever is around, myself included, brilliantly helping everyone to get moving and achieve their fitness goals. It has been a pleasure getting to know everyone better during the “off-season” and a joy to see how much they care about Camp every day of the year.

Living with me full-time in Roe this fall are #22172 Austin Carmody and #20763 Chris Peisch. This summer Austin was a leader in Upper Suter, while Chris was working as a staff member in the A-Hut. We have also been joined at various points by #19136 Ian Kotz, his brother #19137 PJ Kotz, and #21688 George Shaw. Ian was a valued member of the Infirmary team for the first time this summer, while also spending his time continuing to build out the camp service program. PJ was a leader in the Cubs and George was a member of the Hike Hut team, helping to facilitate our Outdoors, Climbing, and Ropes programs. This fall, the whole crew has continued their hard work from this summer, helping Maintenance to prepare the campus for winter while also running programs for the aforementioned visiting groups, like the Boquet Valley Central School and New Canaan Country Day School.

Initially, Austin and Chris had only planned to be around in September, but other opportunities presented themselves, leading them to work at the local schools. Both recent college graduates, their summers at Dudley have fostered an interest in education and working with kids outside of their time at Camp. When positions opened up as full-time building substitutes at the schools, both Austin and Chris

Like me, Austin has really been enjoying his time in Westport this fall.

Once Camp finished, Austin briefly returned home to spend some time with his family and returned with his dog, Pierce, who has been a wonderful addition to our fall crew. Together they have been taking advantage of their extended time on Lake Champlain and in the Adirondacks, taking daily long walks through the newly acquired Frisbie Farm property, with Pierce loving how much land he has to run free on. Working at the Boquet Valley Elementary School, Austin is looking forward to taking over his own first grade class while the primary teacher is out on maternity leave. He is grateful for the wonderful faculty and staff at the "Lake View" campus in Westport who have welcomed him and helped him through this transition. He is especially happy to be working alongside Dudley's own #20637 Carol Schwoebel, the school nurse, and #18079 Diana McGuigan George, the school library assistant. In his free time, Austin has climbed three of the Adirondack High peaks including Giant, Cascade, and Porter, and he is eager to cross more of the 46'ers off of his list.

Chris has also been enjoying and taking full advantage of his time here this fall. During the week, Chris works at the Boquet Valley High School, referred to as the “Mountain View” campus, in Elizabethtown. While there he has been grateful to the helpful and welcoming faculty and staff members. Many of them, along with the students, have Dudley ties, including #21337 Ellie Schwoebel, #24011 Paul Buehler, and #13744 Tom Bisselle. So far, Chris has valued his time teaching English and working in Special Education. He is looking forward to whatever opportunities present themselves as he works with the hardworking students of Westport, Elizabethtown, and Lewis. In his free time when he is not teaching or working on projects around Camp, Chris has enjoyed going on hikes, kayaking, playing pickleball, and visiting the Westport Library.

I am currently in the process of wrapping up my fourth Last Whistle.

While the first three have been completed away from campus, it has been a truly unique experience compiling all the memories of a particularly special summer in the place where it all happened. I never imagined that I would ever get that opportunity, nor did I see myself spending this much time at Dudley in the “off season,” but it has been a truly wonderful experience that will stay with me for years to come, and I am so glad to be sharing such a beautiful place with an incredible group of people.

Alumni News 91 year old Josephine “Joe” C. Nelson, Montreal, Quebec (Kiniya camper in 1943, 1944, and 1945), returned to Kiniya’s shores for the first time in 76 years! Joe was the recipient of the “Senior Spirit Award” in 1945 and carried her trophy with her on the tour. Joe loved retracing her footsteps from younger years!

#12168 Phil Adil, San Rafael, CA, recently wrote of a vintage name tag he discovered. Says Phil, "My wife has had an old blue wool blanket in the back of her car for about 15 years. I was cleaning out the trunk a few months ago and noticed my name tag. Some Camp traditions linger for a long time.”

#7388 Bill Greenawalt, Hartsdale, NY, shared the exciting news that he was inducted into the Westchester County Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in December 2020.

Bill was honored for his years of service and volunteer leadership in Westchester County. In sharing the news with Camp, Bill recounted the long list of things he had done as a camper, JL, and Leader at Camp between 1946 and 1951. Bill's recognition is a testament to how learning to live the Camp motto at a young age often leads to a lifelong commitment of selfless service.

#12931 Scott Sylvester, Spencertown, NY, and son Hayden received a great credit for their hiking in Adirondack Magazine from the ADK Mountain Club.

Scott and Hayden were featured as a father-son hiking team that had great respect for the mountains and the alpine summits. They are sharing stewardship across the generations. Says Hayden, who hopes to come to camp in 2022, "Hiking is super fun—and when you get to the top, it is super-satisfying."

In Memoriam #5822 Henry Leland "Lee" Getz, Greenwich, CT, passed away on June 25, 2021. Lee first attended Camp in 1938 at the age of nine.

His brother, #5521 William was given his camp number when he attended in 1936. #6581 Berkeley Johnson recalls that Lee's brother #5520 Charles also attended Camp. The brothers were nicknamed Ligetz, Chigetz and Bligetz.

Lee was born in 1929 in New York City and attended the Edgemont School and the Hill School before receiving a B.A. from Yale. Following graduation, Lee joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the 1st Marine division. After his military service, Lee began his career in banking. He worked for The Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company until 1969, when he left banking to co-found Russell Reynolds Associates, an executive search firm. Lee and his wife Connie raised their three young boys in Greenwich, CT, where Lee enjoyed his role as Commissioner of the Town Youth Football League.

Lee was inspired by childhood summers spent at Camp Dudley where he learned the value of "The Other Fellow First." Lee is survived by his second wife, Helen Marie Getz, his three sons: #11044 Peter L. Getz (Anne), #11536 Robert H. Getz (Jeanine), and #12632 George H. Getz (Dana), and his seven grandchildren, including #20944 Isabel, #22436 Beau, and #19522 Axel. #6245 William Carroll "Nick" Coyne Jr. died on June 24, 2021, in Cazenovia, NY. Nick's association with Camp began in 1941 and continued through the late 1960s. He served on the Board of Managers from 1971-1976 and received the CDA Man of the Year Award in 1982.

Nick grew up and attended school in Norwich, NY, and enrolled in Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, PA, when he was 16.

Nick always considered Mercersburg Academy an integral part of his life. He formed life-long friendships and was deeply appreciative of the education he received. To give back to the institution which meant so much to him, he served the school as a member of its Board of Regents for a total of 27 years, acting as chairman from 1975-1982.

Nick continued his education at Syracuse University, another institution to which he became whole-heartedly devoted, graduating in 1954 with a B.A. He then graduated from the Syracuse College of Law in 1957. Nick's legal specialty was the field of labor law in the private and public sectors. He held memberships in the Onondaga County, New York State, and American Bar Associations, as well as ABA Labor Law Committee. He was a charter member of the NYSBA Labor Section. Nick was a partner at Hancock & Estabrook Law Firm, which he joined in 1957. After serving as managing partner for many years, Nick retired in 1997 and continued

to work with the firm until 2003. Nick's other great love in life was Camp Dudley. It was there, as a youngster, he spent time playing his favorite sports, learning how to serve others through its motto, "The Other Fellow First," and honing his excellent sense of humor. Camp Dudley was where he became "Nick," short for "Nickel," which his friends called him in light of his last name. Nick is survived by his children, #13281 Carol, #13288 Tracy, #13302 Mary, and #14255 Christina (Christy); his grandchildren, Sarah McClane, #19288 Sam Tenney, #19895 Miles Hearon, #22255 Aicher Hearon, #21602 Freddy Hayes, #21702 Sarah Hayes; and his great-granddaughter, Grace McClane. #7248 Robert D. Stubbs, Clearwater, FL, passed away in April 2021. Bob was at Camp in 1945 and was a leader in 19521953. #12188 Dennis Ryan notes, "Bob Stubbs ran the Kingston Y and hosted CD reunions for decades, including when lots of Kingston families first came to Dudley."

Bob's son, #10870 Robert D. Stubbs II, was at Camp from 1970 -1975, and his grandson, #17870 Robert D, Stubbs III, camped with us in 1999 and 2000. Bob's brother, #7847 William S. Stubbs, Jr., attended Camp in 1945 and his nephew #13442 William Gregory Stubbs was here in 1983.

Bob was born in 1933 in Auburn, NY, and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland. While studying at Cortland, he became interested in the United States Marine Corps and served until 1962. He was promoted to captain and assigned to the Reserve Force. Bob then began a 31-year career with the YMCA, becoming General Director of the YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County, NY, where he served for 27 years. It was there that Bob, through his diligent adherence to the principles and ideals of the YMCA, led the Association through an extraordinary expansion of programs for youth, families, adults, senior citizens, and the physically challenged. Bob retired in 1993 but remained active in various community organizations. He especially enjoyed vacationing in the Adirondacks.

Bob is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Willcox) Stubbs, daughter Robyn (Wayne) Zimmerman, son # 10870 Robert D. (Sylvia) Stubbs II, and daughter Holly (Ed) Andrade. He is also survived by his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many loving friends. #7383 Glenn Rheinhardt passed away on May 25, 2021 in Pittsburgh, PA. Glenn arrived at Camp in 1946, where he met his lifelong friend, #7831 Paul Lutz. Glenn, Paul, and #7405 Willie Schmidt were among the stellar Kitchen Crew team that served Camp that year. A small graveside service was held to remember Glenn. He is survived by his wife, Wilma.

In Memoriam #8529 C. Courtney Keller passed away on January 4, 2021, in Miami, FL. Courtney arrived at Camp in 1953 as a Cub and returned through 1956 and then again in 1958. Courtney spent most of his childhood in Bronxville, NY, and joined the Air Force after graduation from high school.

After an honorable discharge, he moved to Miami to pursue a career in aviation. There he met and married Sheryl Smith, and they had two sons, #13109 Christian and Brian. Together the Kellers owned and operated the popular Cheese Villa cafes on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables and at One Biscayne Tower in Miami.

Courtney was a loving father and sports fan, enjoyed skiing and boating, and was also a volunteer and advocate for the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami.

Courtney is survived by sister Anne Torell, his nieces and nephews, his longtime companion Wanda Simmons, and sister-in-law Suzanne Smith. #9073 A. James "Jim" Mettler, Suffern, NY, passed away on August 13, 2021. Jim attended Camp from 1956-1959. His Dudley history included his dad, #3709 Tom Mettler, (1924-31), his brother #7575 Thomas H. Mettler, Jr., and nephews #12439 Chris Mettler, #10954 Kenneth Growney, and #10953 Edward M Growney III. His sister #22079 Elizabeth Mettler Growney attended Camp Kiniya and was given her camp number in recent years before her death. Jim was born in Nyack, NY, graduated from Princeton University, and had a successful career in legal sales. Jim is survived by his wife Ellie, daughters Samantha Kowalczyk (Jeff), Marlo McPartland, Mindy Spiegel, Lauren Johnson, Lisa Lancia, and Lynda Babaian (Greg). He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Mike Growney, son-in-law, Alex Machado, his grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. #10890 John Gregory passed away at the end of April 2021. John attended Camp from 1969-1974 and made many lifelong friends. He spoke of his time as the best summers of his life. John and brothers #9002 Peter and #9992 Michael came to Camp from 1956 through 1974 when John was an Aide.

John's nephew #17695 Michael Jr. also attended Camp.

#12721 Andrew Morey, Boston, MA, passed away on June 7, 2021, surrounded by his loving family.

They take comfort in knowing that Andrew lived each day fully, created community with laughter and cheer, and helped many along the way. Andrew attended Camp in 1980-1981 and was excited that his daughter #25821 Elizabeth would be starting her first summer at Kiniya in 2021.

Born in Greenwich, CT, Andrew graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall, Vanderbilt University, and Columbia Business School and went on to have a 30-year career in finance. He and his wife, Carolyn, settled in Beacon Hill to raise their three daughters.

Andrew delighted in supporting his family and he could often be found cheering on his girls and others at squash matches, lacrosse games and ski races. He enjoyed sharing stories about great music, the New York Yankees, the New England Patriots, and the Boston Bruins. He never missed an opportunity to attend a live concert or sporting event.

Andrew is survived by his wife of 21 years Carolyn, his three daughters, Charlotte, Catherine and #25821 Elizabeth, his parents Martin and Marilyn Morey, his sister Elizabeth (Brian) Neligan, his brother Alex Morey, over 100 in-laws, nieces, nephews and second cousins, countless friends and his beloved Cardigan Corgi, Oliver. #12821 Christopher Caye, Honolulu, HI, passed away on August 4, 2021. Chris began his Camp career in 1980 as a camper and continued through the leadership ranks with only a few interruptions until 1994.

Chris's legacy at Camp extends back to his grandfather #3497 Webster J. Caye Jr. and great uncle #3498 Gerald Caye, both of whom attended in the mid-1920s. Chris's father #7254 Webster J. "Webb" Caye III was at Camp through the 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s. Chris's uncle #8978 Daniel Caye was at Dudley in the late 1950s. Christopher grew up on Maui, where he attended Haleakala Waldorf School and Seabury Hall. Christopher graduated from Willamette University in Oregon, traveled extensively, and worked in various sales positions from scuba to seafood. Christopher loved life and lived it fully. Preceded in death by his father, Webster J. Caye, he is survived by his mother, Christina Cowan, stepfather Dave Cowan, and stepsiblings Tiare, Jeff, Rick, and Lisa.

In Memoriam #19871 John "Jody" Underwood passed away suddenly on July 28, 2021. Jody started his Dudley career in 2007 as a Cub and continued until he became a leader in 2014 and 2015. He always lived "The Other Fellow First."

Jody was born in Norwalk, CT, attended Wilton High School, and received a Bachelors of Science in Psychology from Lebanon Valley College. This spring, he completed an internship at New Vitae Wellness and Recovery in Quakertown, PA, where he aided residents in developing life skills and shared his gift of music with them in his spare time. Jody planned to pursue a Masters degree in clinical psychology and aspired to help at-risk youth.

Jody completed a NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) course in the backcountry of the West, and he felt particularly at home in the wilderness and mountains of Colorado and Vermont. Jody was a devoted friend to many and will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and humor.

Jody is survived by his mother, Jennifer Anda, father, John Underwood, and stepfather, Jon Anda; his sisters Emily, Helen, and Ibby; his grandmother, Joanne Arnonehi, and his longtime girlfriend, Melanie LeaRussa.

Friend of Camp Dudley Jeanne Stevenson, La Jolla, CA, wife of #7314 Don Stevenson, passed away on August 10, 2021. A devoted partner to her husband, Jeanne was a frequent visitor to Camp and attended many events. Jeanne was born in Passaic, NJ, and attended Saint Luke's Hospital Nursing School in New York City. It was in New York that she met Don; they traveled to Ann Arbor, MI, where he began his internship and she worked as an operating room nurse. They were married in 1962 and raised three children. Jeanne and Don moved to La Jolla in 1969, where Jeanne actively participated in the community. She attended San Diego State, graduating with a major in Psychology. Jeanne then enrolled in the California School of Professional Psychology and completed her PhD in 1989. For the next 27 years, Dr. Jeanne used her passion for people and psychology to counsel couples and singles. She retired at the age of 79 years.

Jeanne is survived by her adoring husband of 60 years, Don, three children, Ellen (Michael), Drew (Audrey), and Catherine (Ryan); four grandchildren, and her three siblings.
