It reads: “Dudley has provided my son the most wonderful and life-changing experiences. I know that Dudley will forever be a part of his life and has already had a significant impact on his life. I also know that these experiences will have even greater impact on his life in the future. I don’t know how Dudley does this but there is magic up there on the shores of the lake. Our family is deeply thankful for all Dudley has done.”

Her son has begun his leadership training and has just started to share what he has learned with younger boys who now look up to him. He has already gained much from camp, but what he learned here as an Aide gives him the foundation to build his character into adulthood. Dudley is good for our boys today, but as important, it is good for our boys in the future.

This summer was another “best-ever.” Like all summers, it also had some major challenges. One was our decision to take more control over what we eat by bringing our food service in-house. In short, we had to start from scratch in all areas from menus to employees to quantities. We learned a good deal along the way and are very pleased to be where we are now. Amazingly, when our good friend and former food service manager, #13081 Jack Mingle, (1981-89) heard of our decision, he offered his hand in help. Jack wanted to make sure we “did it right” and came as a volunteer to the kitchen most days throughout the summer.

This fall, Marnie and I are revisiting our strategic plan with the Board that will guide us as we continue our good work for the next generation of Dudleyites. As a part of that process, we are surveying the Dudley Family, one of our greatest assets. We appreciate your insights on what makes Dudley unique. The results of this effort have already been amazing, and we look forward to sharing them with you. One thing that stands out . . . we are all proud of our affiliation with Camp, proud of our Camp Number, and of “the Dudley Brand.”

Lake Champlain!”

Greetings From Kiniya, As the saying goes, “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” As we start a new fiscal year and reflect on our 2013 season, this rings especially true. It’s not just the succession of the summer, where our July session is quickly followed by August. It is the sense that everything is connected, happens for a reason, and that one thing always leads us to another.

Aside from our camp season, September/October is my favorite time of year. Each year it brings the opportunity for rest, reflection, renewal, and a true sense of pride for all that we have accomplished. It also brings great hope for our campers’ success as they head back into the school year, and of renewed commitment and purpose.

I am also bombarded by a thousand images of triumphs and challenges, both personally and professionally. I think about the wonderful relationships that I am able to maintain through Camp with parents, campers, staff and alumni. At its core, our role as directors of our beloved camps is about relationships and community. It is important for us to not merely to serve and direct, but to work together with our community as partners. It is through this partnership that we feel camp can have a lasting impact, one built on trust and respect, which carries on from the summer through the rest of the year.

It is very gratifying to hear from families about the wonderful experiences that their girls have had at camp – learning new skills, meeting new friends, and asking important questions about themselves and the world. True, some of this feedback is not entirely positive, or even easy to hear. But as wonderful as it is to get compliments, it is essential to receive constructive criticism as well. It is truly rare in life that we improve as a result of success alone.

With our successes and shortcomings, we become stronger as a camp, just as our campers become stronger from the ups and downs of each camp season.

With great respect for the past lessons learned and optimism over the boundless possibilities ahead, we embark on our strategic planning process. From where I now stand, I can look back and see what we have accomplished over the course of my 20 summers at Kiniya. But I can also sense the potential of what is yet to come.

I could not be more excited about this next chapter at Camp, the many promises that it brings for Dudley and Kiniya and the opportunity to work in partnership with Matt and in collaboration with this incredible community.

Thank you for your continued commitment to Camp.

Letters to the Editor . . . #9897 Larry Gosline wrote about his father, #4975 Ernie. (See obituary, page 59) Dear Matt, On Monday, April 8, 2013, my Dad, #4975 Ernie Gosline, MD, passed away in Clinton, NY. He was 88, and had the good fortune to live a long and eventful life. His three children, nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren were also very fortunate to have had him around this long. Nonetheless, his sudden death was a shock to all who knew him.

It really didn’t occur to any of us (or him, for that matter) that this was his time. He left a new car in the garage, a half completed 1000 piece puzzle on the dining room table, several partially finished books, notes on an upcoming lecture he planned to give to the medical club, violin music on his music stand, and evidence of a number of other ongoing projects around the house.

My Dad was a multi-tasker, and was blessed with a great mind and boundless energy right up until the end. A lifetime of memories comes back to those of us who knew him and experienced his natural curiosity and interest of the world.

family, involved a camp-wide “capture the flag” game shortly after 9-yearold Ernie arrived at Camp. Ernie found a terrific place to hide . . . so good that no one could find him for several hours. As darkness was setting in, and Ernie Gosline in his Sunday best, on top of the entire Camp was the Adirondacks frantically searching for him, he was finally discovered, much to the relief of everyone. His first reaction was one of great pride in his adventure – he had found the best place to hide of anyone ever! From that point on, he and Chief were bonded, an association which lasted for many, many years. I recall at a late ’60s Camp reunion breakfast, Chief remembered my Dad’s name, hometown, and camp number. That always impressed me. I have also been curious about how the minimum age to be allowed to attend Camp was raised after my Dad attended!

Camp Dudley was a very important part of Dad’s life, from an early age. He began as one of the youngest campers in Dudley history, and kept close to Dudley all his life, as a camper, leader, parent, grandparent, reunion participant, and supporter. We children (Scott, Larry, Susan) heard many stories as we were growing up of adventures there as a camper and leader.

His loyalty and belief in the Dudley spirit was a prime motivator for Scott (#9747) and me (#9897) to attend Camp in the ’60s and for two of his grandsons (Matt, Ryan) to attend Camp in the ’90s.

Dad attended Camp for the first time at 9 years old, in 1933. Chief Beckman was Camp Director at that time, and he and my father bonded early on. Dad’s parents had separated, and Camp provided him a great opportunity to create new relationships, make meaningful connections with others, and to discover his spiritual side.

My belief is that for much of Dad’s life, he was looking to have an impact on the world, and in doing so, connect with others – in a sense, he wanted to be discovered, and to be loved. His accomplishments were numerous. In the end, he was discovered and loved, in his relationships with members of his family and close friends, and in particular with his wife (Whit) of 65 years.

We will miss Dad very much, as will his extended family and close friends. He had a significant impact on the world around him. Camp and the Dudley spirit had a major influence on my Dad and helped him formulate his values and ideals early on, which served him all his life. It also helped him to understand how important relationships with others were to him, and through example, he passed this on to others. My Dad will always have a place in our hearts, and we will always be grateful for his life lived, and his life loved.

Letters to the Editor continued Barbara Carr Howson wrote from Richmond, VA with an update on her family (see “Future Dudleyites, page 58), but also these great photos which she unearthed from her home files.

Said Barbara, “I am also sending along what I think is a priceless photo from the past that I just found in an album I’d tucked away. It is of son #13024 David, with Willie David Howson, #7405 Willie Schmidt, the Director, son Michael Howson, and George “Nellie” #13354 Michael, Nelson, 1983 and #7681 George Nelson. It was probably taken during Michael’s Cub year which I think was 1983.

Lastly, I was so saddened to hear of Lois Schmidt’s death. I remember so vividly having lunch with her in 2011 with my daughter, Susan . . . still have that wonderful photo of all of us. I spoke with her on the phone last summer when I was up there, but she was awash in family visitors and we never could get time to get together. She was the essence of Camp Dudley, that is for sure. Hard to picture Dudley and even Westport without her.

#10352 Bob Cushman, Jr. wrote from Rye Brook, NY. “I enjoyed reading that letter from #4918, Bill Denhard (Spring 2013 CD News.) It made me think of my father (#4616 Bob Cushman, Sr.) and the Dudley stories he loved to tell me. I wish I could go back in time and take an oral history from him. So, it was wonderful reading Bill’s recollections from the old days.

I also enjoyed reading, in the “Service section,” the piece on #21359 Mary Grace Henry and her nonprofit organization “Reverse the Course.” I know of her work because she is a student at the school at which I teach, Convent of the Sacred Heart, in Greenwich.

Maybe I will get to teach her next year.

Overall, an excellent issue of CD News. Kathy and I are looking forward to spending some time in Westport this summer. One of these years I want to schedule a full two-week block of time that we can spend in the North Country.

T

here are so many wonderful aspects of life at Dudley and Kiniya. Among them are the rich traditions that evolve, the truly great people, tremendous facilities, and beautiful scenery. The CDA reunion is a chance, each year, to live in that world for a brief time and to invite other people to join and share it with you. During the most recent Reunion in Westport in August, all of those aspects were abundant, and we considered ourselves very fortunate to be present and able to share them with old friends, family, new friends, and future Dudleyites.

The weather was nothing short of remarkable, prompting several hikers to report that the views from Baxter and Cascade were the clearest they had seen in their lives. As magical as the surroundings were, they paled next to the ceremonies during Reunion that honored two legendary Dudleyites.

#6102 Cab Woodward was honored as the 2013 CDA Man of the Year. Cab is a genuine Dudley legend, an exceptional human being whom Chief Beckman named a leader at the age of 15. Two of Cab’s longtime friends, #6581 Berkeley Johnson and #7927 Jonathan Clark, delivered wonderful remarks about Cab and the many ways he has made the world a better place. (See “Man of the Year” page 8). These included his successful business career, his family, a truly memorable and cunning trick he played on Willie Schmidt during a visit Willie paid to Cab’s home many years ago, and his longtime support of Dudley. #7731 Pete Willmott extolled Cab’s virtues, calling him a very reliable and wise friend and mentor. Marcus and I felt extremely honored to be able to recognize Cab as the 2013 Man of the Year.

At Chapel on Sunday, we celebrated the life of another Dudley legend, #16000 Lois Schmidt. Lois had a tremendous impact on Dudley and Dudleyites over four decades, and the beautiful memorial service was a fitting tribute to the life and legacy Lois left us. The heartfelt and moving remarks from her children and friends provided a strong reminder of qualities that many of us strive for but that seemed to come so easily to Lois. It’s an understatement to say that Camp would be a different place today had we not been graced with her presence, and we were extremely fortunate to have had the time with her that we did.

In many other ways, Reunion again delivered a number of gifts in which regular attendees find great joy. On a personal note, I find myself thanking former CDA President #12664 Ted Smith on a regular basis as Ted gave me the chance to serve in this role four years ago. The chance to visit with friends from #7381 Paul Lutz and #6439 Chick Lyttle to #15238 JD Boyle to #11875 Rob Scharges to #12170 John Fischer to #14278 PJ Callelo over Michigans (with great thanks again to #8070 Ben and #13326 Pam Nelson). The chance to try paddle boarding with my son at the

The chance to watch #13426 Ned and Vanessa Johnson finish the run on Saturday at the exact same time, thanks to Vanessa clearly sandbagging. Certainly, Hymn Sing is a gift, and Reunion delivers a special treat in that we are joined by campers from Dudley and Kiniya. The energy is enough to raise the roof of Witherbee, and this year’s Hymn Sing featured what we believe to be the first ever “Study War No More” Golfers Dave West, Sybil and Randy solo delivered by a toddler, when incoming CDA Vice-President #14992 Dave Ready Quayle, and Rick Tomlinson pose after a winning round. tried some ventriloquism while holding his 15-month-old son, Thomas.

Reunion weekend also featured the groundbreaking for a wonderful addition to main campus that has been spearheaded by #12664 Ted Smith and #12495 Fanning Hearon. The two close friends from Dudley and Middlebury College had a vision years ago of leading a group of Middlebury alums to leave their mark on Camp. It’s happening now as the Middlebury Pavilion will be open and ready for the 2014 season. Please join me in thanking Ted and Fanning for their vision and leadership in what promises to be a new venue that will help make memories for Dudleyites for years to come.

We were also thrilled to recognize some 50-Year Pin awardees as well, including #6001 Clyde Wonderly of Kingston, NY, #10027 Bruce Treiber of Seacliff, NY, and #10003 Michael Bartlett from Weston, FL. The summer staff was again at the heart of giving everyone a taste of the good life at Camp by supporting activities from arts and crafts to archery to pick up soccer games. #16119 Marlon Fisher played a big role for the first time this year in keeping everything moving with the same success he had during the summer. #19117 Chris Ramirez and #21812 Domanick Walker brought new experiences to the group this summer, focused on young Dudleyites-to-be, that were a big hit. These included an outdoor movie night for the young kids on the Plebe Diamond and a spectacular karaoke session on the Witherbee porch on Saturday afternoon.

Marcus and I want to thank everyone who made the trip and contributed to the fun and fellowship over the weekend. Reunion, just like Camp, is about the people who make up the vast yet intimate community of Dudleyites. As my CDA tenure comes to a close, I am deeply grateful to each of you, and I’m looking forward to seeing you again in the near future. I am also delighted by the team that will move the CDA forward, #13820 Marcus Chioffi and #14992 Dave Ready. There is not a better pair of people or a pair that is more devoted to Camp, and we’re all lucky that they have agreed to contribute their talents to the CDA. The future is bright for sure, so thanks again for being a part of it.

#6102 Cab Woodward

CDA 2013 Man of the Year #6102 M Cabell Woodward Jr. arrived at Dudley in 1940 and automatically found “a second home.” A natural leader, Cab was asked by Director Chief Beckman to be a Leader at the age of 15, during World War II, when many of the older leaders were serving their country. #6102 Cab Woodward, right, receives well-deserved applause from old friends #6581 Berk Johnson and #7927 Jon Clark.

His dedication to Dudley ever since has been remark. able, as a Camper and Leader throughout the ’40s and early ’50s, as a two-time member of the Board of Managers, serving as Secretary and Treasurer, as Vice President and President of the Camp Dudley Association and as Chair of Westchester Reunions. Every time that Dudley has needed help, Cab has been there to provide it.

Throughout this service, Cab provided what #7731 Pete Willmott described as “consistent reliability and wisdom.” Said Pete, “When I was a camper in his Hurd Cabin in 1950, Cab epitomized the virtues Camp Dudley holds dearly – a great leader, principled, intelligent, outgoing, athletic, good sense of humor. I could go on and on. Cab had these qualities then and he has them now.”

Cab graduated from Princeton University, where he played varsity football and hockey, then the U.S. Marine Corps Platoon Leadership Class, where he was an honors graduate. He graduated from NYU Business School and began a business career, rising from assistant treasurer to a Chief Executive Officer in record time for Continental Baking, then was asked to be the Chief Financial Officer of one of the largest conglomerates in the world, ITT.

While dedicated to business, Cab was even more dedicated to his family; his wife Helen, his daughters and grandsons, three of whom — #16871 Hayden Boucher, #17071 Peter “Java” Boucher and #18201 Thomas “TT” Boucher — attended Dudley. Cab also took leadership roles in the sports arena as the President of the United States Seniors Golf Association for several years and was actively involved for 21 years. As Cab said, “In golf, for awhile, we try to shoot our age. I have now moved beyond that goal . . . I have reached the point where I strive to shoot my temperature!”

Dudleyite #6581 Berk Johnson provided a tribute. “Since meeting Cab in 1942, he has personified two Dudley character traits; Dr. Condict Cutler’s highest praise for someone was “that he did everything with honor, nothing for honor.” That’s Cab. Second, that it is always about taking the time, not about finding the time. No matter the situation, if you seek a piece of Cab’s time, he gives it to you fully and freely right then and there, not an agreement to set a date to meet.” #7927 Jonathan Clark then followed, with some wonderful The Woodward-Boucher Clan, L-R: Anne, JJ , Java, Jeb and Hayden Boucher, and Cab Woodward humor about Cab, and another tribute. Said Jon, “Cab is a man I have admired greatly for many years. He is a wonderful choice for Man of the Year. In fact, if one were asked to pick an all-time, All-Star team of Dudleyites, I can’t imagine Cab being other than a unanimous selection. So, Cab – congratulations. Not just for being chosen for this award, but really because of all you have done over a lifetime.”

Surrounded by family and friends, Cab was presented with the Man of the Year Certificate by Chairman #11889 Dwight Poler, who read, “Cab Woodward epitomizes the virtues Camp Dudley holds dear . . . leadership, principle, intelligence, modesty and a good sense of humor. He has enjoyed the friendship and respect of all who know him at Dudley and beyond.”

Cab’s comments were characteristically humble and humorous, as he recalled his long and close friendship with Willie Schmidt, with whom he teamed up for the Indian Pageant, and on the Witherbee Stage. He spoke to the longevity of Dudley friendships, and his belief that Dudley was well positioned and led, and should continue to do good things for young men and young women for generations to come. At the conclusion of his remarks, he received a warm, standing ovation from the more than 300 Dudleyites on hand.

Congrats, Marnie!

Marnie McDonagh celebrates 20th year at Kiniya!

I

n January of 1994, Marnie McDonagh was at home in Australia reading “The Age,” a Melbourne newspaper, where she spotted an advertisement for Camp Counselors USA, an organization Kiniya still uses to hire international staff. The ad was intended to recruit instructors for summer camps in the USA. Marnie was game, so she sent off an application.

Marnie remembers “After a lengthy interview process, I was placed on review at Camp Kiniya in Colchester, VT. The Assistant Director at the time, Mary Williams (middle daughter of then owners Jack and Mimi Williams), called me for a phone interview in April, which resulted in my placement at Kiniya as a water-ski instructor for the coming summer.”

Little did Marnie, or Camp Dudley, know that a summer might lead to a career. Our young water-ski instructor was jazzed about a summer in America and had hopes of traveling the world after the summer was over. That’s not quite how it worked out.

As Marnie recalls, “I landed in Burlington, VT, on June 14, 1994 and I remember my first drive into Kiniya vividly. Mary Williams had collected me from the airport in a white 15-seater van and we drove through the entrance, straight to the dining hall, where the view of the lake took my breath away. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the campus from the first moment I set foot on it. The reality of Kiniya far exceeded my many expectations.”

You’ll not be surprised to hear that Marnie ran a pretty sharp waterskiing program that summer.

Former owners, Jack and Marilyn (“Mimi”) Williams knew a good thing when they saw it and asked Marnie McDonagh to return the following summer as Head Counselor. From there it was off to the races, with Marnie becoming Assistant Director in 1997, Associate Director in 1999 and Director, following Dudley’s acquisition of Kiniya in 2006.

Marnie recalls this journey with pride. “I learned so much about running a Camp from Jack and

Mimi in my early years and was so impressed with their ability to remember each and every girl who attended Kiniya over the years. Mimi’s wonderful sense of adventure and fun, combined with her remarkably high energy level was perfectly balanced

by Jack’s sharp business sense and attention to detail. Camp was their life for 55 years and they have immense pride in all that they achieved over that time and fond memories of all that they created.”

Enter Dudley!

In 2005, Dudley had made the decision to enter girls camping, and was searching for the right partner to fulfill this expanded mission. #18141 Fran Bisselle was leading that search, heard about Kiniya, and visited Jack and Marilyn for lunch. Fran met and took time with Marnie as well. Said Marnie, “I enjoyed hearing Fran’s stories about camp life at Dudley and Jeanne D’Arc, where Fran was a camper and later Director. Soon after, I was introduced to the Dudley Board of Managers when they came to visit Kiniya for a tour during their Spring Board Meeting in 2005. I was greeted warmly by each and every member of the board and became excited about the possibility of working with them in Kiniya’s next chapter.”

The acquisition was completed, and Marnie visited Dudley for the first time, where she was asked to be the Kiniya Director. She recalls, “Being so impressed by the Dudley campus and the incredibly well maintained facilities, but more importantly by the leadership of the camp and the commitment and enthusiasm of each staff member I encountered. I stepped into that first summer overwhelmed about all that lay ahead but deeply committed to taking one step at a time - leading our community through a transition that would result in both growing pains and tremendous possibilities.”

That transition has been nothing short of remarkable, with Marnie leading the way. In a challenging balancing act, she has been able to maintain the best of Kiniya’s 96-year culture, while introducing team sports, leadership training, spirituality and “The Other Fellow First” to the camp. The summer of 2013 marked Kiniya’s 8th year as part of the Dudley family and Marnie’s 20th year at Kiniya.

“I have always loved that Marnie is a ‘Yes Woman.’ She never says no to an idea that is presented to her, but rather she says yes with gusto and enthusiasm. Said Dudley Director Matt Storey, “I can’t imagine a better partner than Marnie as we approach the challenges and excitement of leading Kiniya and Dudley together. My hat is off to her in achieving 20 years at Kiniya. It’s a great accomplishment.”

We love that she says goodnight to us each night, reminds us to have fun and be nice to each other, and ultimately we are thankful for her commitment to all of us here at Kiniya.”

Admissions at Dudley #15107 Evan George

D

id you know that last year Dudley and Kiniya processed over 1,100 applications for Camper, Aide, German Exchange, and NOLS spots? And that doesn’t include the applications we received for leadership positions!

A large part of our success is our ability to find enthusiastic boys and girls who will not only love a summer on Lake Champlain, but who will also bring something special to our campuses. We don’t advertise or attend summer camp fairs. We rely on you — our alumni and parents — to identify boys and girls who would be a great match for Dudley or Kiniya.

At Camp, we put a lot of emphasis on giving back. We think about it in terms of donating to the scholarship fund, investing time as an Open House Host, or coming up to a Work Weekend.

Another important role for our alums, however, is helping find boys and girls who will love our program and progress through out leadership development program to one day lead a cabin themselves.

Campers on both sides of the lake love their summer and make new friends from around the world.

In 2013, at Dudley and Kiniya combined, 244 campers had a father with a camp number, 37 had a mom with a camp number, and 106 had a grandfather with a camp number.

Many of us have immediate family . . . sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren . . . that we can’t wait to sign up. That said, we work hard to find new families that would be a great addition to the Dudley and Kiniya community.

Who are Dudley and Kiniya looking for?

For Dudley, our target group is boys that are currently in 5th grade and/or are at least 101/2 by the time they come to camp. For Kiniya, our target group is girls currently in 4th grade and/or who are at least 9 by the time they come to Kiniya this summer. However, we have new campers in all divisions or age groups so it’s also appropriate to reach out to boys and girls up to 14 years old. Additionally, we are paying particular attention to increasing diversity at both camps . . . socioeconomically, racially, ethnically, and geographically.

What should I do?

1) Refer Prospects to Us: by using the “Refer a Camper” button on our website. When we receive their information we’ll send them an email with more detailed information.

2) Follow-up with the Parents: the summer can seem a long way off in December or January, but checking in with them and seeing if they have any questions will make parents and prospective campers more confident in submitting an application.

How can they apply?

The New Camper Application is available on our website . . . right next to the Refer a Camper button!

Applications are due by January 15th, 2014.

What if they’re worried about the cost?

The William J. Schmidt Scholarship Fund makes it possible for us to invite boys and girls, regardless of their family’s ability to pay the full tuition, to have a Dudley or Kiniya summer. There is a scholarship application that they can fill out after they submit their camper application.

When will they find out if they’ve been enrolled?

If they’ve applied before January 15th we notify families of enrollment decisions in mid-February. Our enrollment process is rolling after that, until we have filled the bunks.

his past week I took time to glance through some of the past Last Whistle dedication recipients. I was instantly floored with great memories of those on the list that I knew. While feeling respect and admiration for those honorees that I did not know personally, after reading their dedications I knew immediately why they had been selected to receive Camp Dudley’s highest summer honor.

“In my mind, the past honorees had exemplified what the Dudley experience is all about: keeping the camp motto close to heart, while tackling everything that comes your way in life. This year’s Last Whistle recipient is no different than the men and women that have come before him.

“Dudley Alumni #9408 Rusty Davis, and 2012 CDA Man of the Year, remembers him as, “A great athlete who played in four national championship Lacrosse games, an inspiring leader who touched the lives of every kid who ever had the privilege to be in his cabin, play on his team, or just be part #10065 Bill McCutcheon receiving of his always fun world, he is a true Dudley man. What higher compliment can we the 2013 Last Whistle dedication. give anyone?”

“Some fast facts from his brother, #8665 Dr. Mike McCutcheon. “He made his first trip to Dudley at age 10 months. He’s a man of dogged determination. He once broke his hand punching the basket stanchion after missing a layup in a Plebe basketball game. He is the son of the 1970 CDA Man of the Year, #3229 William T. McCutcheon. He was a 10-year member of the Board of Managers and CDA president. No one here in the ‘70s can forget him posting himself at the main gate on parent pick up day on a lifeguard stand with a bullhorn and commenting on every carload of campers as they made their exit. He was the first at Camp with a lacrosse stick with a plastic head, before him all the sticks were wooden.”

“Digging a bit deeper into his Dudley history I was instantly hooked on a classic story told by #11264 Mark Davenport. “For sketchiness above and beyond the call of duty, he will forever be remembered as the man who invented the Dudley Soapbox Derby. You should have seen the look on his face when the first four races ended in unbelievable crashes halfway down the Camp road. The course was the hill starting at the main gate and finishing at Cub Beach. His grin was insanely endearing as he had to admit that the five-foot high ramp he’d built to start the cars off probably couldn’t be used if anyone was going to make it to the bottom of the hill.”

What’s even cooler about this… during this interaction, I bet he helped you out. Because that’s what this guy is all about: being present for others, always willing to step in and offer an extra hand if help is needed; while always keeping that trademark glowing and encouraging smile on his face.

“Every time that you set foot onto that paddleboard, or start raising your boat sail as you set out onto Lake Champlain during choice time, or attempt to start fishing on Suter Point without a buddy... he’ll be on top of it, making sure you’re safe.

“A true Dudleyite sets a tone that can be looked up to by others and that causes us to want to do more for others. We are all incredibly lucky to have a person like you at Camp Dudley and I feel that I can say this on behalf of all of us, we are better people for it. It is my honor to dedicate the 2013 Last Whistle to #10065 Bill McCutcheon.”

Lacrosse Clinic – #17065, Billy McCutcheon III, an all American lacrosse player while at Towson University, and now assistant coach at Monmouth University in West Long Beach, NJ, visited Dudley for 3 days each session and offered specialty college level training for interested participants. “The workouts and strategy sessions were demanding but allowed our boys a glimpse of what it takes to be successful at the college level,” said Evan George, Program Director.

Mike Dunleavy Coaching Clinic – Former NBA Player and Coach, Mike Dunleavy (also father of Chicago Bulls Point Guard, Mike Dunleavy, Jr.), visited Camp Dudley in August to conduct a Junior-Senior all-star basketball clinic and game. Coach Dunleavy’s trip to camp was the result of a generous donation to the 2012 Online Auction. The experience of having the Coach with us for a few hours was a once in a lifetime experience for the boys on the all-star team. You could see the boys’ focus and intensity as they tried to capture every word and skill that Coach Dunleavy offered. Thanks, Coach!

A Christmas Carol – It snowed on the With-

erbee stage this year, as Witherbee presented A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens. This winter classic, masterfully directed by #18079 Diana McGuigan, was one of several outstanding productions offered this summer. It was tough to pick your favorite performer from the show. Some say it was #18070 David Nelson as Scrooge. Others say #13758 Jake Rutter stole the show as Marley’s Ghost. But most of the cub division voted for #23604 Zach Whelan as Tiny Tim. Terrific staging, a huge cast, and special effects were all part of this timeless classic’s premiere on the Dudley stage. Relive the show again

Dudley Day – The brainchild of one of last summer’s Junior Division Leader, #18534 James Frankel, Dudley Day featured a full day of choice time! Yes, the scheduled activity for the day was choice time. All program areas were open around camp so boys had the chance to spend a little extra time with friends doing their favorite things or trying out something new. We even added a few new activities like Yoga, Karaoke, and Paddle Board tours, and a fly fishing clinic. The camp archives were open for the boys to visit. “Hey, look! There’s my dad! I never knew he looked like that!” The day ended with a wonderful allcamp Mass Vesper led by Davo.

Paddleboards – When you ask almost any camper for a list of their top five favorite camp activities, you will hear “paddleboarding” some place on the list. “It’s sooooooo cool!” “It’s like walking on water!” “It’s a cross between surfing and canoeing but way more fun!” These were some of the words campers said about the newest water sport on Lake Champlain.

2013 German Exchange #20050 Katie Grabowy

T

his summer Camp Dudley, and Camp Kiniya sent twelve campers —eight boys and four girls — on the German exchange program. I was lucky enough to be the Kiniya leader coleading with Dudley leader #17525 Peter “Shorty” Treiber. The trip was split into three parts: a one-week homestay, two weeks at Camp Abbensen, outside of Hannover, and the final week traveling through Germany.

When we arrived in Hannover, the YMCA director and all the families that our campers were going to stay with for the first week warmly greeted us and we all went our separate ways. As leaders, we stayed with YMCA (or “CVJM”) leaders.

Each family gave their campers a tour of Hannover, going to the zoo, touring the city and in the middle of the homestay we all met at the City Hall and had the chance to meet their lord mayor (“Oberburgermeister”). At the end of that week, it was off to Camp Abbensen for an international camping experience.

At Abbensen we had extravaganzas every day with all the leaders really getting into the games and hyping the kids up. Abbensen was such an amazing experience. We got the chance to experience camp in a way we never had before, learning new traditions while embracing different cultures. Along with the extravaganzas, the campers went on a three-day hike and canoe trip, participated in a talent show and learned about all the different cultures represented at the camp.

The last week of our trip we traveled from Hannover to Berlin, where we stopped and saw the Berlin Wall, then went to Dresden and toured the old city. Our final stop With Leader Pete Treiber sporting great lederhosen, the Dudley boys, feeling like true Germans after a few days at Abbensen. was in Munich, where we toured the city, took a night watch tour, and toured the Neuschwanstein Castle, which is the real life Disney castle! This year’s German exchange was unforgettable. We made new friends, experienced new cultures, and made memories that will last forever.

News from the West — NOLS Leadership Trips

N

o news is good news. In the age of constant connection and real-time communication, the boys and girls of the 2013 Dudley NOLS Leadership Trips dropped off the grid for a solid three weeks. Back at the home front in Colchester and Westport, “no news is good news” became both the trip update from Camp, and the mantra rehearsed by those moms and dads involved. It was a waiting game full of excitement and anticipation for all . . . but the reward was well worth the wait. The level of excitement and passion positively radiated from the kids upon return, and it was truly a wonderful experience to be a part of the homecoming of those trips.

The three trips to Lander, WY, and the Wind River Mountains last summer were indeed a success. During the first session, #18303 Matt Bartlett led one group of ten boys while #18306 Erik Soderstrom (Monkey Man) led the other group of five girls and six boys. The two First Session trips spent 2 weeks backpacking across the mountain range, were quite near to each other in proximity for a period of time, but never crossed paths.

Matt’s expedition then enjoyed a week climbing at Scab Creek Buttress, while Erik’s group posted up for a week of climbing deep in Sinks Canyon. #18778 Blake Harper led the third and all-boys trip during the Second Session. His group crossed the Winds in a similar location, passing near to the spectacular Circe of the Towers, before setting up climbing camp at a crag called Wild Iris at 9000 feet above sea level.

The groups from the 2013 expeditions spoke very highly of the wilderness-based leadership learning inherent in the NOLS curriculum. The boys and girls commented on the similarities between the camp motto, “The Other Fellow First” and “Leave No Trace Ethics” practiced by NOLS. This year we also began

to notice some exciting and unexpected outcomes from the Dudley NOLS partnership. For example, a mentorship program has naturally and organically developed between each year’s trip in the form of advice and even detailed notes. #22088 Chandler Ryan from the first session trip spearheaded, with the help of other trip members, a specific list of tips for next summer’s ladies. “Throughout our trip there were some things we wished we had been told, and so we’ve written up a list of tips and things you should bring that you might not know about otherwise.” In addition, the boys and girls returning from Lander all had time to present their experiences and tell stories from their travels to a room full of rising Seniors and Aides. Lastly, we are benefiting across Camp from the knowledge and perspective of those who’ve been on the trip, especially during our Camp-based hikes and canoe trips.

The plan is to head back to Wyoming next summer, to continue including campers from both Camps, and to find ways to consistently improve the experience while fostering a mutually beneficial partnership with the NOLS. Bungalow Cabin ——————————————————

At 7:59 AM, June 25, 2013, opening day of the 129th summer season, the last construction details were completed on the newly refurbished Bungalow. Just in time!

Bungalow, in Kiniya’s Junior Village, houses Lakeside, Meadowside and Riverside cabins. This year’s improvements included: totally new bathroom facilities for the 28 summer residents, reconstruction of bunks and the common area, re-siding exterior walls, new roofing, new windows and screens, and a complete repainting.

Middlebury Pavilion at Dudley ————

It’s really happening! What began as a dream several years ago is becoming a reality. The Middlebury Outdoor Pavilion is now under construction and will be ready for the Summer of 2014.

The “Dudley Dome Performance Center” as some have called it, will offer a new venue for Wednesday night shows, movies, mass vespers, parent weekend gatherings and even Mellowfest. Financial support for this new gathering and performance space is coming from alumni of Middlebury College and Dudley, as well as a wonderful collection of friends and families who are supporters of the arts.

Kiniya Challenge Course Coming for the Summer of 2014 ————————

A Kiniya Challenge Course is being designed now and will be ready for Summer 2014. The course will consist of a series of challenges and obstacles that can be completed by a group or set of partners. Challenge course elements require trust, communication, teamwork and some pretty serious problem-solving skills. The Kiniya course will be able to offer all of this to campers beginning in 2014. It will consist of activities that are close to the ground and high in the air. The elements are designed to offer girls (and boys) varying degrees of challenge that are age and skill appropriate.

“The design team is carefully considering our existing programming, staff availability, and potential for growth as they create the Kiniya course.”

Said Marnie, “It will be something special that supports how we help girls develop personal, physical, and leadership skills in a really fun way!”

Kiniya Dedications Two renovated facilities were dedicated in July at Camp Kiniya on Parent’s Day at the end of the first session. It was exciting to unveil the commemorative plaques for the Muhlhausen Leadership Cabin and the Lois P. Schmidt Memorial Chapel, in the presence of friends and family.

Muhlhausen Leadership Cabin Completely rebuilt after record flooding in 2011, Muhlhausen Cabin has patiently awaited the last part of its reconstruction process. Members of the Muhlhausen and Poler family and friends were on hand as the plaque honoring Mary Saylor “Mimi” Muhlhausen was revealed in its permanent location next to the front door. (insert plaque photo so text is legible) We are grateful to Dwight Poler and his family for making the Muhlhausen cabin reconstruction possible.

Gail attended Kiniya (as Gail MacVicar – from their summer place in Mallets Bay) in 1948, and is thrilled to see grand-daughter, #20489 Greta Poler, walking in her footsteps at Kiniya, thriving in the Leadership program at camp! Marnie dug out some old Kiniya brochures from the late 1940s and Gail was delighted to identify herself in two of the photos!

Lois P. Schmidt Memorial Chapel The renovated Lois P. Schmidt Memorial Chapel occupies the space that housed the traditional Camp Kiniya Chapel, symbolic of Lois’s commitment to helping Kiniya retain its own identity and traditions. Improvements in seating and other aspects of the physical location have allowed the Chapel to become a permanent part of the Kiniya Campus. Schmidt family and friends were on hand to celebrate Lois’s contribution to expanding Dudley’s mission. We are grateful to those who have made gifts in memory of Lois Schmidt.

Hike Hut Food, or . . .

A perfect recipe for getting hungry

Recipe for Getting Hungry!

1. First take a 10-hour hike on muddy and rocky trails.

2. Add several thousand feet of elevation gain and loss. Continue hiking.

3. Add a 30-40 lbs. pack (weight unevenly distributed for extra adversity).

4. In a separate bowl, mix 1-4 stream crossings, a scoop of complaining, 4 million mosquitoes, an ambitious hike leader and a feeling of adventure. Add in a little at a time while hiking.

5. Sporadically sprinkle, shower or pelt some type of rain and wind event.

6. Put some sun in. Continue hiking.

7. Finally, make sure to throw in one awesome contribution by the JL and one boneheaded move by that same JL that adds to the hiking time.

8. Repeat step 1-7 for three days. * For high altitude baking, mix in 1 Summit Steward. * To customize the experience add either a 1-3 black bear encounters, an even louder camp group, a grumpy ranger, a happy ranger or a bushwhack.

T

here is something special about this recipe that creates a truly unique brand of appetite that is difficult to replicate. After an epic adventure in the Adirondacks, campers and leaders return to Dudley happy and hungry. This is not for a lack of food on the trips; most trips even return with some leftovers, but is simply a result of strenuous physical and emotional work.

When on a hike like this, food becomes more than simply breakfast, lunch and dinner. It becomes a motivator, an event, and a source of total joy and satisfaction. And if a camper (or leader) goes too long without it, they inevitably get hangry. Hangry = hungry + angry. No big deal, just feed them and they’ll perk right up. It is truly amazing how at times the entire attitude of a group can make a full 180° turn based on food. For example, parents know the value of hot chocolate as a motivator. We do too. Trip leaders also know when to strategically pull out the GORP, or when to stop the group, take out the stove and make a round of cheese and pepperoni quesadillas for lunch. There is no doubt that food plays a pivotal role in the success of our Outdoor Program’s adventures.

Last summer we took a closer look at the food we serve on trail, and we began to make changes toward a healthier, activity-appropriate, and balanced backcountry menu. Our in-house food service allows for better control over this process and more creativity with the recipes. Our menu now includes local and organic items like bulk oatmeal from Champlain Valley Mill (Westport, NY) instead of single serving oatmeal packets, and Ben Weaver Farm hamburgers from grass fed animals for our Cabin Overnights. We’ve also substituted store-bought single serving breakfast bars and granola bars with much better bars made in-house. We’ve moved from single serving hot chocolate to bulk. We are already looking forward to next year’s menu with a creative eye.

Cooking on the trail is a great learning experience.

This restructuring of the backcountry menu has also buttressed our sustainability efforts through the widespread use

of reusable containers and bulk purchasing; fewer single-serve throwaway items, and much less program specific waste. We’ve moved from an average of four, 60-gallon trash bags filled by a division returning from the woods to 1.5. We hope to continue to increase our use of reusable materials, and to cut waste further, by offering entrée options from a menu of backcountry dinners made from fresh and local ingredients. This is the next big step — a shift from freeze-dried dinners to backcountry cooking. We piloted this idea on a few Dudley hikes last summer, and we are Canoe trips have their own special cuisine! optimistic.

Cooking is a life skill, and we hope that, in the future, any camper who spends a few years at Dudley and Kiniya will learn how to assemble some basic meals in the backcountry. While eating a delicious meal after a long day on the trail is reward in itself, backcountry cooking provides so much more. By teaching campers to prepare, assemble, and cook their own food, they become both responsible and accountable for the outcome. Campers can take ownership over the process and be proud of the result. The process, from menu planning to cleanup, can teach such skills as teamwork, patience, balance, creativity, timing, and cleanliness. We began last summer by implementing a few recipes and planning charts borrowed from Bulk oatmeal is a great way to our friends at NOLS, and hope to introduce the idea of 3-4 person cook groups reduce waste. next summer. These bars are made with 1/2 cup sesame seeds care in our Dudley bakery with local eggs, flour, and 1/2 cup sunflower seeds 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips oats, are full of energy, and are delicious.

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a 9×14 inch ovenproof baking pan.

2. Mix the rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour together in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, honey, canola oil, vanilla, and salt until evenly blended, then stir into the oat mixture. Stir in the flax seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, and chocolate chips. Use your hands to mix the ingredients, and press the mixture into the prepared pan.

3. Bake in preheated oven until the edges are golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Cool completely in the baking dish before cutting into 2-inch bars.

4 Enjoy immediately or somewhere in the middle of the woods.

was lucky enough to land a summer job at Camp Dudley at Kiniya for the summer of 2009. For the next two summers this luck continued with a long flight (18 hours, 8,000 miles) to and from South Africa. Finally my luck turned into fortune, when Marnie was able to secure an 18-month visa allowing me to stay two summers in a row! With so much going right, I expected life to taper out and cruise along happily at Camp; however, road trips and camp friends were too much of a pull to just stay put in Colchester. And so began the “Many Travels of Nick.”

My family and friends from home were never quite sure where I was, but they knew I was enjoying my stay. It all started with a road trip down to Florida to fetch a boat…

This drive included several stops along the way, seeing #21141 Catherine Butler at Penn State, followed by a visit with #20113 Caroline Delaney and #20297 Chloe Potash at Wake Forest University, and continuing to University of South Carolina in Columbia to see the Marching Band drill field and #20050 Katie Grabowy.

The final stop was Miami, FL, where I visited with #21001 Randy Breekner, currently stationed at the Coast Guard base there. Oh yea, and I picked up a boat for Kiniya in Maitland, FL. My travels continued across the pond to England in early February. In London, I hosted a mini reunion with the following staff members: #22374 Will Small, #22760 Alex Foster, #22356 Jack Beecroft, #22361 Salli Dixon, #22385 Emma Moran, #22762 Gergo Komjati and #22355 Alice Baldock. This reunion included a lot of singing and even a Kiniya cheer! Upon return I made a quick stop in New York to have dinner with #21013 Sarah “Bear” McDonough and #18555 Charlie Bolton Valley, VT O’Rourke.

After summer 2013, I started to plan out my next adventure. It started with a road trip from Phoenix to San Francisco with #23240 Nicole James. In Phoenix, #23168 Dee Smith, the first session Nurse at Kiniya, hosted us for dinner. We then drove north through the Grand Canyon, turning west to head through Las Vegas and straight to San Francisco to visit #20444 Hanna and #22774 Linda McPheron. After a quick visit with the McPherons, we continued on to our final stop in Los Angeles. Here we met up with fellow summer 2013 staffer #23166 Emily Millen.

Service #7818 Bob and Janet Ferguson Honored #7614 Bob Hadden wrote to us about his old Dudley pal #7818 Bob Ferguson. Bob and Bob were at Camp together in the late ’40s early ’50s and have been lifetime friends. According to Hadden, “Bob taught at Eastchester public schools and was the longtime director of YMCA Camp Sloane, in Lakeville, CT. He remained active in the ACA and YMCA for many years.” In retirement, Ferguson and his wife moved to Clearwater, FL, where they have been dedicated volunteers for a Tampa Area Hospital.

This spring, the Tampa Lightning, the professional ice hockey team, recognized Bob and Janet as “Heroes of the Year” for their efforts. Here’s the story;

TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning honored Bob and Janet Ferguson as the 39th Lightning Community Heroes of the year. The Fergusons, who received a $50,000 donation from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, will donate the money to Camp Living Springs, supported by the Morton Plant Mease Foundation.

The report continued: “Bob and Janet Ferguson both are cancer survivors that know full-well how difficult it is to go through cancer treatments, especially chemotherapy and radiation treatment. After experiencing their own struggles, their hope is to give patients suffering from cancer a chance to unwind during the recovery process. The couple prescribes major doses of courage, comfort and enjoyment for cancer survivors and their families.

The Fergusons both spent countless hours at Camp Living Springs, a Morton Plant Mease supported 100-acre all-expense paid three-day adult retreat facility that is intended to put the fun back into cancer patients’ lives. The Fergusons plan a variety of activities and invite cancer survivors to get away from their daily obligations by nurturing their spirits and building camaraderie through fishing, crafting, nature walks, karaoke, entertainment and dancing. Congratulations, Bob and Janet!

#17525 Pete “Shorty” Treiber who led the Dudley German Exchange program this summer, didn’t stop traveling after Germany! He worked with TCL (Thai Community Lacrosse) during a two week stay in Bangkok, Thailand. Per Pete, “We worked with a school whose students all came from several different slums surrounding Bangkok. We played lacrosse for a few hours, three days a week, leading up to a tournament that also included the physically disabled. It was at first challenging working with kids that did not speak any English, but it was soon clear that it didn’t really make a difference. The language of smiles, laughs, fun and high-fives trumped all language barriers. I am now three weeks into my travels. I just spent the past week in Luang Prabang, Laos, and now I am off to Vietnam for the next two weeks before heading to Nepal and India. The plan is to spend my 25th birthday amongst the mountains, aka the Himalayas. Thanks again for the opportunity to lead the German Exchange, it was a wonderful trip and an unforgettable Pete “Shorty” Treiber volunteering in experience. I believe the boys and girls would also agree with me.”

#7973 Tim Barnett Awarded Henry M. Rowan Conservation Award Tim Barnett, who was at Dudley from 1950-55, was recognized in August for “His extraordinary dedication and passion for protecting the land and waters of Lake George,” said Nancy Williams, the Lake George Land Conservancy’s executive director. In an article in The Mirror, the Lake George Magazine, Williams said, “Tim’s influence in the Adirondacks is undeniable, and we especially feel the results of his work here in Lake George. His expertise guided the formation of the Lake George Land Conservancy in 1988; he helped to protect the Rowan Preserve and other major northeastern shore properties on the lake in the ’90s; and he dedicated 11 years of service on our Conservancy’s Board of Directors. We are pleased to honor Tim with this year’s Henry M. Rowan Conservation Award, to acknowledge his extraordinary dedication and passion for protecting the land and waters of Lake George.”

The YOHA! is alive and well in Thailand.

In the article Tim, who grew up in Westport and graduated from Middlebury College, said that in his first job he was an advertising salesman in New York, and that, “Selling TV time has no rewards except financial ones. I wanted to live in the Adirondacks and do something that satisfied my own sense of worth.”

Tim landed at the Adirondack Nature Conservancy as executive director. Tim said, “Fortunately, the board was composed of experienced environmentalists who had been fighting the battles of the Adirondacks for decades. And although I was a neophyte environmentalist, we broke new ground for the Nature Conservancy by pioneering landscape scale conservation in the Adirondacks.”

According to The Mirror, “By the end of the 1970s, the new organization had protected 94,000 acres throughout the Adirondack Park.” Congratulations, Tim!

Beckman Society Growing Stronger! by #10555 Dave Langston

he Chief Beckman Society is now an established group of donors who serve our camps in a very special way . . . by making a planned gift through their will or estate or by gifting endowed funds to Dudley. These donors make it possible for the “best ever” camping experiences we provide on Lake Champlain to continue for generations to come.

As of September 30, 2013, the Beckman Society has grown to 60 very special individuals and couples. These folks have discovered that planned gifts can be made by anyone using cash, stock, life insurance policies or real property.

The Beckman Society was named in honor of #310 Chief Beckman because of the vision he held for Camp’s future. More than 100 years ago, Beckman built the framework for Dudley as we know it today. Members of the Beckman Society share the ideal of meaningful camp experiences for future generations of young men and women.

A Planned Gift can take many different forms.

Each offers donors unique benefits and is usually developed as part of a larger financial plan. Here is a quick summary of some of the common Planned Gifts people have used to remember Camp.

Gifts through your will (bequests) – Your will directs a percentage or specific amount of your estate or trust be given to Camp Dudley YMCA, Inc. These gifts often can reduce estate taxes.

Gifts outside your will – Camp Dudley YMCA, Inc. can be named as a beneficiary of life insurance policies, appreciated securities, real estate or retirement plans. These gifts often avoid probate.

Gifts that pay you – With the help of your attorney and/or financial planner, a trust can be created that provides you with income during your lifetime. At the time the trust is settled, Camp Dudley YMCA, Inc. receives all or part of what remains in the trust.

The annual fund is the cornerstone of our fundraising program, which sustains our annual scholarship fund, leadership development, and facility maintenance needs. It is our life blood!

#11373 Mike Stevens and #12289 Scott Martin are co-chairs of the Board of Managers Development Committee. “Our goal each year is to increase the number of donors who support the Camp Dudley Annual Fund,” Scott said. “During the summer we challenged our current parents to join the leaders, staff and board in contributing to the Annual Fund. Many accepted the challenge,” he continued. “Adding new friends to our list of donors is probably the most important development activity we do all year,” said Mike. “The quality and breadth of the experience we offer to boys and girls is what helps parents understand why tuition alone can’t cover all our expenses. Generations of Dudley families, alumni and friends ‘get it’ and support the Annual Fund.

We are extremely grateful. However, just as making new friends is an essential part of the camper’s experience, it is also critical for the development team to make new friends each year, ” Stevens concluded.

More than 250 boys and girls benefitted from scholarship support this summer. Here’s what two of them wrote to us; “I wanted to say thank you to Camp Dudley for giving me a wonderful opportunity. I had the best summer of my life . . . I met a lot of good people who helped make this experience the best. I hope to see you next year.”

“I just want to let you know how much I appreciated the opportunity to experience Camp. I enjoyed meeting people from all over the world. And I loved all the activities. My cabin was awesome, everyone was really supportive and kind to me. Some of my favorite memories were from Chapel. I hope I can do it again next summer. “ Have you made your gift yet? We hope so!

From August 24 until September 15, 2013, Dudley donors and bidders alike made frequent visits to the Camp Dudley Online Auction Site. “How are my items doing?” they wondered.

Computers and mobile devices buzzed, beeped and chirped with news that, “You’ve been outbid. Bid again?”

“OK. Just ... one … more … time!” you’d reply as you submitted your next offer.

This year’s auction had more than 150 items to choose from. What a collection of donations we had! A private party in the New York Giants Legacy Club, a romantic getaway to London, England or the

Caribbean Island of Culebra, special entertainment and sports packages, unique golf outings! All created bidding excitement, but in no category was the competition more heated than in the Camp Corner!

Beckman Hall banners, historic signs and furniture from both sides of the lake, personalized hymnals, Gail’s famous 7 layer bars, and custom pottery mugs all surpassed our bidding expectations.

This year more than $69,000 was raised to support the scholarships for boys and girls attending our camps, to improve our campuses and to hire the finest leadership teams. Sincere thanks to all donors and bidders! Your participation is what made this year’s event successful and FUN! Fall 2013

News & Notes #4291 Fred Klein, Tucson, AZ. Dave Langston reports, “During the quest to find Dudley’s oldest camper, we heard from Fred in May. Fred lives in Arizona with his wife Patricia. Now 97, he first attended Camp in 1928 and is still an avid swimmer, a skill he first learned at Dudley.

His current power stroke is #4291 Fred Klein . . . freestyle and he is the reignDudley’s current “oldest ing National Champ in his camper?” age group. He told us that he learned the Australian crawl and then converted to freestyle. During his first two years he lived in a tent near what is now Witherbee Hall. In 1930 he was one of the first to sleep in a newly constructed cabin on campus. Fred believes he was one of the founding members of the Rhythm Ramblers and played the tenor sax. His memories of Camp are vivid and fond.

Fred still lives by the motto and wishes “The Other Fellow First” was the way the world operated. Fred’s two sons, #9582 Fred Jr. and #9711 Steven, also attended Camp. #5310 Dudley Dalton, wrote from Winston Salem, NC, that he and Marian are doing well. We tried to twist his arm to get him back for the August Reunion, but he was traveling to South Carolina at the time.

Dudley, the grand nephew of #310 Chief Beckman, first came to camp in 1938. #5614 Bruce C. Cornish, Lee’s Summit, MO, attended Dudley in 1937-39 and recalls that he was on scholarship during those years, arranged by his grandparents.

He remembers his grandfather saying, “When you are able, return some to Camp.” Bruce also participated in some of the Dining Hall operations and helped with maintenance before and after parties. #6206 Les Cizek, Fort Bragg, CA, traveled back to Dudley to visit his grandson, #23206 Phinneas Scanlan, over Parents Weekend in July. “Quite a few years since I first started at Dudley in 1940!”

#6322 Bruce MacLaury and wife, Virginia from Washington, DC, spent a pleasant summer in Vermont.

“We are serving as a way station when #21622 Charlotte’s parents drive up from Falls Church, VA, to pick her up from Kiniya. So the beat goes on!” #6507 Will Powell, Manchester, VT, wrote, “We made it to grandson Tim and Jane’s wedding (See “Powell-Phelan Wedding page 56) with a lot of Dudleyites in attendance - had a ball and won the low number contest.”

#6689 Bill Webber, Tucson, AZ, remembers, “During the summer of 1945, when I had just turned 13, several of us from Bronxville took the commuter train to Grand Central Station and boarded the Camp train bound for Camp Dudley. That afternoon as we arrived at the drop site, we were met by our camp leaders who asked us if we’d heard about the B-25 Mitchell Bomber crashing into the Empire State Building. We thought it was some kind of a bad joke, but later we learned that, sure enough, on the morning of July 28, 1945, as we sat on a train headed for Camp Dudley, a B-25 Bomber had crashed into the building under a dense fog.” #6921 Bob Dehlendorf, Bozeman, MT, had a setback this summer and is recovering from a stroke in Billings, MT. One of the “Mad Trio,” along with Sterling Aldrich and Bob Miller, Del was at Camp in the 1940s.

Old pals can drop Del a line at this home, 1006 W Main Street, Bozeman, MT 59715. Here’s to a speedy recovery, Del! #7083 Mike Poler, Rowayton, CT, is feeling good and still whacking the golf ball. “Three grandsons at camp this summer.” #7221 Tom Carrier, Rio Verde, AZ, and his wife, Ann, spent the month of August in the Northeast. “Drove to Chicago and then embarked on an extended tour of the Northeast to visit family and friends. We had hoped to get to Dudley for a day or two but were not able to squeeze that into an ambitious driving schedule. Hopefully we’ll be back next summer.”

#7234 Lee Gammill, Mill Valley, CA, and wife, Jane, are doing great in Marin County. Gams has just mastered email (leegammill@yahoo.com) so send him a note. “Having our two grandchildren at Dudley and Kiniya for the second summer is wonderful. We’re receiving the obligatory postcards and they are hilarious!”

#7865 Pete Muhlhausen, Hudson, FL, had a good excuse for missing CDA Reunion this year . . . he was playing competitive 3-on-3 basketball in the senior games (75-79 age group) in Cleveland at the time! Not bad for a guy with a 7865 camp number! Said Pete “Our team meshed well together, but were a little short on height. Lots of fun, played two games most days with a roster of five, and our best player on the DL (“disabled list”) after game two!! Wound up winning the bronze medal.” Pete and Jerry have sold their home in Johns Island, SC, bought a home in Hudson, FL, close to Spring Training, and hope to build a summer place on the Lake in Crown Point soon. #7881 John and Ann Sudduth, Watertown, NY, made it back for Reunion, after celebrating 50 years of marriage in June. Congratulations Suds and Ann!

#7370 Tom Crowe, Canton, GA, wrote saying, “Carol and I are getting settled here in Georgia. Laurel Canyon is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge about 45 minutes north of Atlanta. Our former home in Bonita Springs, FL, was wonderful for 17 years but this is a great location, closer to our scattered family and friends – even to Dudley and our ‘Northern’ heritage.

Best regards to all @ Dudley. #7449 Dick Cadigan, 1947-1952 and has fond memories of Dudley. “My Cub year was Chief Beckman’s last, and when he greeted me, he asked how my pet dog was by name!” Dick’s Dad was a Leader under Chief in the 1920s. “One truly fun memory was post Dudley, when the Wesleyan U. basketball team that he captained, beat Williams, captained by #7731 Pete Willmott with teammate #7445 Phil Brown at the Williams gym in 1959. We were all friends from Camp Dudley and we all went to the NCAA Small College Tournament that year!” Ed. Note: Dick’s recollection was confirmed by Williams College Sports Information Director Dick Quinn. Per Dick, in Willmott and Cadigan’s three years of competition, it went 1957 – Williams – 85-77, 1958 – Williams –70-59, 1959 –Wesleyan – 67-54! So Pete, what happened that night?

#7987 Dick Edie, Berwyn, PA, came back to Westport in August with his wife, Linda. Popped into the Westport Hotel for a couple of nights and did a little road trip to Placid for old times sake. He then chatted with Dudley great, #5616 Eddie Card, raving about his journey to Wadhams and the Dogwood Bread Company which is featured on page 31 of the October issue of Adirondack Life!! Said Ed, “One of my favorite places.” Dick and Linda then headed to the Cape for a family reunion with sons #11762 Rick and #11977 Jon and their families. “We’ll be there next summer for the 130th!” #8012 Peter Prezzano writes that he has two grandchildren attending Dudley, #22112 Teddy Durfee at Camp Dudley and #22321 Kate Whitman at Camp Kiniya.

Peter’s wife, Susan, was also a Kiniya Camper. #8191 Alf Kaemmerlen, Plainsboro, NJ, was on hand for the “Olde Boys” gathering during CDA Reunion, and said he was ready to throw up a few hook shots on the basketball court with Messrs. #8972 Ting and #8674 Bill Vanneman, #9411 Whit Rutter, #9555 Randy Quayle, and #9457 Tom Ervin. Nobody took the bait!

Bill is still in touch with #5288 Dave Coffin, longtime Exeter Academy teacher, Bill and Anne Campbell who lives at Riverwood, a retirement community in Exeter. Bill wrote, “I saw Dave Coffin last Friday at the opening assembly of the Academy. The Academy has a tradition at the opening assembly of introducing all emeriti present (who are on stage) in reverse order of appointment and Dave was the last introduced as he was appointed to the faculty in 1952. He got quite a hand. Dave is approaching 91 and still plays a little tennis!” #8497 Ken Hill, Pasadena, CA, wrote that he and Freddi continue to stay busy in California. Ken said, “Just finished as president of the Pasadena Rotary and took on presidency of the LA County Arboretum Foundation. I guess I am a slow learner!” #8498 Jud Phelps, Yarmouth Port, MA, and Bonnie came back to Reunion, with many members of the Phelps clan.

He continues to teach and tutor English at the Westminster School in Atlanta, and says, “Once a Dudley Counselor, always a Dudley Leader!”

Fun to picture the kid from Rockville Center, Long Island, going after 30 pound trout on Flathead Lake! We’ve been trying to get Ernie and Anna back to Camp, so that he can team up with his old Goomicus Partner, #8506 Frank Finsthwait. Our chances are good, since Ernie recently asked, “What do I do to get a 50-Year Pin?” The answer, “Just show up for CDA Reunion next August, and hear 400 Dudleyites cheer for you!”

Tom is retired and has recently written a guide for parents, swimmers, pool members and beach goers entitled The Swimmer’s Guide to Safety. Tom was at camp from 1953-61, as a camper and leader. #8612 Pete Trowbridge, Gilbert, AZ, was in Willsboro, NY, this summer, with brother #7714 Tom Trowbridge, of Orinda, CA, for some good old Adirondack summer weather. Pete is a retired high school history teacher, whose Dudley family history goes back to 1912.

#8688 Gene Little, Canton, OH, had a mini-Dudley reunion with #7951 Jack Kotz. Gene and Sally’s son #14000 Blake is in Stuttgart, Germany teaching for the Department of Defense Schools at our military bases. #8697 Wally Merriam, Fayetteville, NY, and his wife, Betsy, got back to Camp for a Reunion with son #14197 Steve and his family. Wally continues as an opthamologist in practice with Steve in Syracuse.

Several of us were determined to be underweight (a condition I have since overcome). We would cross the road to Bob’s home each evening for milkshakes and other super foods. As it was the ’50s it was called “the Marshall Plan” when that term had some additional meaning.

Bonnie joined the rest of the Tower-Combs clan for a sizeable family reunion during CDA. #9158 Phil Laughlin, Wellesley, MA, wrote, “Great news about Cab Woodward being named CDA Man of the Year. The ‘Dad-Cab connection’ was actually a Dudley one. My dad, Newt Laughlin, took my brother Bob and me to a Bronxville, NY, CD reunion (before we attended Camp), and Cab was the Reunion MC. Dad was so impressed with Cab at that meeting that he ended up hiring him at Continental Baking!” #9459 Peter Burr reports that his daughter #18659 Carrie Burr participated as a Photographic Artist in a Juried Exhibition at the University of Louisville and has also been asked to join the Board of Directors of the Louisville Arts Association. Peter is the grandson of Dr. Leroy Burr, who gave Burr Lodge in Memory of Norman Burr. #9649 Jim Doub, Baltimore, MD, wrote that, “It has been fun to be able to assist #16431 Dermell Brunson with his “Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Center” and his efforts in providing after-school arts programs for the Baltimore City school children. #9694 Bill Travis, Pittsfield, MA, was the successful bidder in the Dudley Auction on an Adirondack cottage near Lake Placid. He and son #14694 Matt enjoyed being in the heart of the high Peaks again.

Bill audited an Ancient Chinese History course at Williams this spring, and is working part-time on a grant with MCLA on teacher development and also on a Habitat for Humanity house in Pittsfield. Bill, his brother #9688 Ted and cousin #9742 Kip were at Camp in the ’60s. #9701 Rich Maxwell, Seabrook Island, SC, and wife, Page, joined the crowd at CDA Reunion and rented a cottage at the Stable Inn. Rich’s Maxwell Associates continues to offer executive coaching for both individuals and teams. #9732 Jamie Greene, Hillsborough, CA, has his arms full. “We were blessed with our first two grandsons in 2012 and #17032 Jamie’s wife is expecting our third in September. Our daughter is due again in February 2014. So we will have four grandbabies soon!” Jamie was at Camp from 1961-63. #10400 Tom Storrier, Wilton, CT, retired from ABC this year, after 34 years. “That is the longest single employment I have had in my life. The only thing that beats this is that I have been #10400 since 1965. I am hopeful that this self-record will continue to grow for many years to come. Dudley is always in my thoughts.”

Two and a Half Men series, and couldn’t get to Reunion. “I keep thinking this show that I have been doing for the past eight years will end and I will begin to shape whatever my ‘retirement’ will look like. It would definitely include at least one annual trip to Westport in August for the reunion!” Looking forward to those days, Jamie. #10617 Rodger Stebbins, Fairfield, CT, returned for Reunion. Rodger is staying in shape hiking in the northwest Connecticut and southwest Massachusetts Berkshire Hills. All John Lowry, Daniel Yoo, and three were in the same Chris Davis USMC infantry officer course that graduated in November 1985. They have remained the closest of friends for 28 years. Dave is a former Marine, Lt. Scott has been working for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva as their African Field Officer for the last five years. He was living in Divonne, France, and working in Geneva. Last fall, he and his family moved to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, to be the Director of the Joint Human Rights Office for the UN there. The operation in Congo is the largest operation the UN has, and Scott coordinates all the various human rights divisions there. He and his family live on the campus of The American School of Kinshasa and attend school there. His The Campbells in South Africa. wife, Nancy, works for IMA World Health as Deputy Country Director of their programs in DRC. This was no small feat for these young men — to be at this Ryan and Brian Degen tournament a student must be

one of the top speakers in their state. Over 5,000 students from across the country were competing. The Dudleyites performed wonderfully and even found time to gather for ‘breakie’ as a Ryan and Sam Bailey group before the final rounds on Sunday (‘Holy, Holy, Holy’ was quietly sung!). We’ll see each other a few times next year as well, and will be sure to send a group shot. Very proud of these guys – the other fellow first was ever-present in Philadelphia!” #15191 Ollie Jeffers, Brooklyn, NY, spoke in Chapel this summer. #21614 Alex Borinstein was honored with the Sonja Milic Greenawalt Award given to a student who has “shown love and caring for others” at his seventh grade graduation this year at his school, St. Hilda’s and St. Hughes. His parents, understandably proud, wrote, “The award exemplifies the spirit of “The Other Fellow First,” and is a reflection of all of the values he has learned at Dudley and St. Hilda’s. The award was named after the wife of #7388 Professor Greenawalt who is Professor of Law at Columbia University and a former Dudleyite (as are his sons).”

Ellen Silverstein (Kiniya Alum 1997 – 2003) emailed Marnie recently with an update of life over the past 10 years. She wrote, “I attended University of Pittsburgh majoring in math, anthropology, and theatre (thank you Kiniya for sparking that interest in me!) After graduation I decided to venture into the culinary arts earning another degree from Johnson & Wales Univer-

sity in Providence, RI specializing in Pastry. While in culinary school, I was able to visit with Leona Rosenblum, one of my dearest friends from Kiniya, who returned to Providence to visit her alma mater Brown. After culinary school, I took an Ellen Silverstein externship in Napa, CA, working for Bouchon Bakery. I am now a pastry chef at a resort here called Calistoga Ranch. The greatest highlight of the last decade though: I became an aunt! My sister, Maura (Silverstein) Cromwell, welcomed a new generation of Silverstein’s, with the birth of my nephew, William! I hope you are doing well, Marnie, and that Kiniya continues to bring you many memories. I know I certainly value mine.”

News & Notes Addendum #6441 Bob Goodwin, Charlotte, VT, former St. Lawrence U. soccer coach was honored recently by St. Lawrence, with the dedication of a new team room bearing his name. Nearly 100 alumni and friends gathered with Coach Goodwin and family on campus in early September to celebrate his contributions to the University and the soccer program. The new team room features state-of-the-art technology, updated locker space and a tribute to the history of Saints soccer. The project was made possible with the generous support of more than 120 former players, alumni and

friends. “I think the room represents much more than a place for the team to change and meet. It represents the St. Lawrence soccer family,” said current Saints head coach #15282 Bob Durocher, who took over the program from Goodwin in 1990. “This is a brotherhood that was formed through the legacy created

by Bob Goodwin.” Following the presentation of the dedication plaque, Coach Goodwin’s son #10466 Don ‘78 spoke on behalf of the Goodwin family.

Bob won nine conference championships from 1963 to 1990 and made two NCAA appearances with the men’s soccer team, finishing his career with 202 victories. The first St. Lawrence coach to win championships in three seasons in a single year, Goodwin coached six other sports during his tenure as well as seven track and field national champions and 40 AllAmericans. Bob was at Dudley from 1942-50 as a camper through leader, and 1967-79 as a Dudley staff member.

Linda was tempted to leave brother Mike in his Winnebago, but let him in her home for a few days. After doing the laundry, it was off to Yellowstone, Badlands Mt. Notes on Golfing Trip to Scotland – May 2013, submitted by group spokesperson, #11846 Tom Canning Four Dudley men spent five days golfing in Scotland with beautiful and historic St. Andrews as their base of operations. Tom “TC” Canning, Dave “Mack” Mackinnon (father of #19625 Angus), #9555 Randy “Bird” Quayle and #9675 Dave “Westie” West played several games on the town’s Links courses, including The Old Course, and traveled to nearby Kingsbarns, Crail, and Carnoustie, for matches as well. We played in conditions that ranged from sunshine to wind-driven rain.

While the ethos of “The Other Fellow First” prevailed in the pub and at the dining table – and the level of sportsmanship was high – the four-ball matches were highly competitive. Keeping the “honor” on the tee was coveted and relinquishing it to “the other fellow” was not in the forefront of our thinking (and this was not exclusively the approach of accomplished athlete Quayle Bird but one shared by all of the players). We were all charmed by the warmth, wit and good humor of the Scots people. See photos below taken on the first hole of The Old Course with the R&A clubhouse in the background (this is the closest we got to it!) and on the Swilcan Bridge on the 18th.

While playing good golf and enjoying good company were the group’s primary goal, Westie had an additional goal and he asked us to help him with it. First a bit of background. While Dave has no immediate plans to run for elected office in either Naples, FL, or Westport, NY, (two of his homes), he has long admired what Presidents Kennedy, Reagan, and Obama did in finding ancestral connections in Ireland. Westie, however, had a dilemma. In contrast to, say, this writer, he is so patrician in his lineage that he has no Irish ancestry.

After a bit of research he learned that he indeed had some Celtic blood. There were, in fact, Scots roots on his mum Bobbie’s side of the family – the Cummings clan – and that they hailed from Angus, the county where the Carnoustie Golf Links are located.

Well, it did not take long before Westie and his distant cousin, Blair, were united on a patch of turf between the first tee and the caddy shack. (See photo below.) They hit it off instantly. There was, in fact, no need to smoke a peace pipe – Blair knew nothing at all of a Yankee branch of the family – but they both lit up Dunhills to celebrate the first of Westie’s pars on the most challenging course of the Open Championship.

Westport 6th Graders Come to Dudley

Camp Dudley was the site of a late spring outing for the Westport Central School. The 14 sixth-graders, with the help of Dudleyites Jessica Storey and Marlon Fisher, were guided through the ropes course, with a ropes swing and a balance challenge, in the forest just off the Dudley Road. According to an article in the Valley News “#16999 Jessica Storey said, ‘We are following a program with the school that is similar to the ones that we use with the campers during the summer. It’s a chance to get them out of their everyday setting and to do something that is fun in their own back yard and work with their classmates in a new and different way.’” Said outdoor program leader #16119 Marlon Fisher, “Every time that you do these activities, it is never going to be the same. You get to find out who is going to step up.” “They are coming together to work on the challenges and enjoying it,” sixth-grade teacher Zoe Brugger-Lobdell said. “Within the groups, you see the strengths of the students.” “We are trying to have them come every other year from sixth grade to 10th grade,” Storey said.

“We want to have them working towards the high ropes course when they are sophomores.”

Recently Recognized . . . #13737 Bruce Hoskins was recently recognized by the Westport, NY, Hose Company for 50 years of service to the Volunteer Fire Department. According to the Valley News “Members of the Westport Volunteer Fire Department came together May 18 for an annual banquet and a chance to honor a pair of peers who have served the company for 50 years. James Westover Sr., and Bruce Hoskin’s road to the Westport VFD was very similar, as both were named members May 1, 1963 and both have served in the Emergency Squad as drivers. “‘When we started out, we had a used hearse with a door on the side,’ Hoskins said. ‘From there, we were able to progress to what we have now.’

According to Harlow Robinson in the Boston Globe; “For a composer, the rich sonic world of The Great Gatsby is both richly suggestive and intimidating. Just ask composer John Harbison. It took him three years of dedicated effort to write his opera based on the novel, commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in New York and first staged there in 1999 with considerable fanfare, in a lavish production directed by Mark Lamos. On Sunday afternoon, Harbison’s opera will finally receive its long-awaited Boston premiere, in a concert version presented at Jordan Hall by the forces of Emmanuel Music.” Said John in the article “I always expected there would be another Gatsby opera after mine,” he reflected. “It’s an endlessly fascinating piece of American culture.”

Ed originally showed up at Camp in the early 1960s, when #8070 Ben Nelson recruited #10059 Grady Hickman, #10164 Tex Bazer and Ed to “flesh out” the Leaders summer basketball team. All four of these guys played together at Louisiana College. “It was one of our more successful seasons on the ‘summer circuit,’” recalls Ben. Ed’s grandson, #10058 Jack Foil, was at Dudley this past summer. #10003 Michael Bartlett, Weston, FL, traveled 1533 miles to Camp this summer to receive his 50-Year pin.

Mike first came to Dudley in 1963, and still remembers getting psyched for his visit to the Stacy Brook Country Club to “play tennis on the grass courts.” Mike, his wife Gaye, son #18303 Matt, a NOLS leader this summer, daughters Rachel and #20403 Shannon, a JL at Kiniya have all enjoyed visits to the North Country. Mike and Gaye have hosted, with #12293 Mike Taranto, the Dudley Southeast Florida Reunion for many years.

Mother-Daughter Weekend This past spring we welcomed 30 mothers and daughters to Westport for a weekend of fun and relaxation. We even invited a boy — thanks for joining, Nick! The weather was beginning to warm up and our campers were getting more excited for camp by the hour. Our very own chef, Gail, prepared our meals for us and set the tone for a wonderful weekend together. On Saturday we enjoyed some time at the Dudley Challenge Course where our moms got a sense of some of the things we ask our campers to do in the summer. Plus, who can hold a Camp event without a little teambuilding? The rest of the day was filled with tie-dying, friendship bracelets, and even a visit to the climbing wall where we had a quite a few moms and daughters tackle the overhang! Some of our attendees were thinking about coming to Camp for the first time and had the chance to meet current campers. The weekend was a smashing success and we look forward to welcoming folks back for Mother Daughter Weekend in 2014. Tentative dates are April 18-20, 2014.

But CD News reporters have verified that it was indeed #15250 Felix Westpfahl, who had just been to the wedding of #17251 Rose Nelson in Westport (see “Weddings” page 56) and decided to add some R&R time on Nantucket before heading back to his home in Hannover, Germany.

Bob was at Camp in the ’50s and ’60s, as Cub DHead — Felix in the ’90s, first as part of the German Exchange and then as a member of the A-Hut. Felix’s Uncle, #15858 Heinze, was a member of the very first

German delegation to Dudley in the early 1960s. The German Exchange is now in its 51st year! #14509 Meg Stovel was at a party in June in Atherton, CA, and was talking to a man she knew she had seen somewhere. Said Meg, “Turns out he is a customer at our current startup company, called HealthLoop.

In talking, I asked him about his plans for the summer. He said his kids were heading to a camp in New York on Lake Champlain. Of course I asked if it was Dudley. He was surprised, said, ‘Yes’ and that he was camper #13469 Joe Donahue. When I told him that I had a camp number too, he was doubly surprised, and we launched into a lively series of camp stories. Joe is committed to spreading the word about Dudley to the California community and is excited to return as camp Doc again this summer.”

Joe Donahue is an orthopedic surgeon at SOAR Medical Associates in Redwood City, CA. Meg was a Dudley Staffer in 1987. Joe was most recently one of the Dudley summer Docs. His sons #22069 Sam and #22469 Henry attended Dudley this summer.

Obituaries #3544 J. William “Bill” Monell, of Newburgh, NY, died on April 4, 2013. He was at Dudley between 1923-26. Bill was born in 1910 and graduated from Syracuse University, Summa Cum Laude, in 1931 with a BS in Business. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 7th Service Brigade, Omaha, Nebraska. He was the owner and sales director for Newburgh Paper Box Company. Bill is survived by his wife, Maxine “Meg” Monell; two daughters and their husbands: Patricia and Dean Davis of Rutland, VT, and Michelle and Jim Techtmann of Gaithersburg, MD. There are nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and more on the way. He is also survived by his sister, Cordelia Overheiser of Woburn, MA, and his brother, James Monell of Princeton, NJ. Bill was predeceased by four brothers: Borden, Lloyd, Don, and Bruce Monell and a sister, Bertha Nelson.

#3990 Victor “Vic” Martin Guilmette, 97, of Saratoga, CA, passed away on March 16, 2013 at the home of his daughter in Bisbee, AZ. Born in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, on August 10, 1915, Vic attended Dudley in 1925 and 1926.

He recalled his mother sewing #3990 into every piece of clothing, cooking pickerel on the beach, climbing Mt. Dix, canvas cots, and the ever-present Chief Beckman. He recalled his counselor, Link Barnett, performing a tumbling act in front of Witherbee Hall.

Vic attended Gorton High School in Yonkers, and one year at NYU before joining the National Guard in 1941 in Savannah, GA., California and Arizona, leaving the service as a Staff Sergeant. Vic married Elizabeth “Betty” Marguerite Wittig in 1945, moving to Chicago. He then joined Johnson & Johnson in Detroit and started a family. He served as a J&J salesman and manager for 27 years. Betty passed away in 1971,

and Vic retired and moved to Saratoga, CA, in 1972, traveling extensively. Retirement did not last long as he joined a medical equipment distributor, working until he was 80 years old. He loved sports, and played golf and tennis ‘til he was 80.

Vic recognized the benefits of the Dudley experience and motto “The Other Fellow First.” He said, “Camp Dudley was the BEST, and every kid should be so lucky to go!” Vic was thrilled to receive his 75-Year Pin, and to carry on the Camp tradition, sending his only grandchild, #19390 Corey W. Guilmette to Dudley.

Vic and his daughter, Nancy, attended Dudley reunions in San Francisco. Once, late because of traffic, they rushed into the lobby and heard the Director about to announce the lowest camp number. Vic shouted out “3-9-9-0,” and the crowd turned around to see one of Dudley’s proudest and eldest alumni racing into the room. They went crazy!

Vic is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Scott and Joanne Guilmette, and grandson Corey, all of Niskayuna, NY, and his daughter, Nancy M. Guilmette of Bisbee, AZ.

#4975 Ernie Gosline, MD, of Clinton, NY, died April 8, 2013. He was 88. Born on May 12, 1924, in Dallas, Texas, he graduated from the Utica Free Academy in ’41, and Cornell U. Undergraduate and Medical College in ’47 with an MD degree. He was commissioned in the US Navy and called into military duty during the Korean Conflict as a Neuropsychiatrist. He completed his residency in 1953 when he received his Board certification in Psychiatry and Neurology. In 1956, he was featured in an article in Life Magazine for his participation in a pilot project involving groundbreaking research on the use of psychiatric treatments.

Between 1959-1965, he served as Director and later Commissioner of Community Mental Health for Oneida County. He also served as a psychiatric consultant for organizations in Oneida, Lewis and Madison counties. He maintained a private practice through January 2012. Ernie was an active volunteer in a variety of professional societies and organizations. He received numerous military honors and awards. He had a love of music and was an avid musician. He was an active member of Westminister Presbyterian Church in Utica Fall 2013

#5490 Dan Belknap of Redding, CA, passed away on June 16, 2013. Dan was born on Sept 11, 1926 and was the son of #2089 Walter Belknap. His grandfather was a friend of Sumner Dudley and Dudley’s first camper, #1 George Peck. Dan earned a bachelor’s degree in Social Work and a master’s in Criminology from Cornell University. He married Helen “Honey” Kullman in 1947. In the 1970s Dan and Honey formed the 415 Society in California, a non-profit training program to help unemployed welfare dependents go back to work. Each year, over 3000 clients worked in Oakland regional parks removing dead trees and selling firewood. The project ran one of the earliest recycling programs in the Bay Area. The job was rewarding and the program a huge success. Dan and Honey retired and moved to Redding in 1994. Dan is survived by: sons Bill Belknap, Andy Belknap, and John Belknap; daughter Elizabeth Belknap; 11 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren. Dan was preceded in death by his wife Helen Belknap, son Michael Belknap, and daughter Susan Sczawinski. Dan was known to say, “I don’t call it death. I call it relocation.”

#5811 Robert Olcott II, of Nassau, NY, died June 29, 2013 after a long struggle with melanoma. Born September 23, 1926, Bob graduated from the Albany Academy in ’44. He joined the US Navy V-12 Officer Candidate Program at Williams College and so became an honorary alumnus of Williams ’48. He graduated from Harvard College with an AB in mathematics in ’48 and from Harvard Graduate School of Education with his MAT in ’49. He joined Albany Academy in 1949, teaching math until 1992 while coaching football, baseball, and wrestling. He volunteered for the Albany Red Cross and Boy Scouts. Bob was a camper at Camp Dudley for several years, and later served as waterfront director at scout camps. Bob loved math, and unlocking mathematical concepts for others. He read widely, loved classical music, built his own barn,

gardened, and traveled from Eastham, MA, to California. As teacher, coach, counselor, father, grandfather, and mentor, Bob touched many lives. He supported many local, national, and international charities, and was a lifelong parishioner of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Albany. His two sisters, Pamela and Martha, predeceased him. His wife, Gertrude, whom he married in 1961, died in 2002. He is survived by his sister, Eleanor and his brother, #8816 Douglas and their families. He is also survived by his daughter, Anne; son-in-law, Robert Beech and their children, James, Abby, and Carrie.

#6028 Don Jamieson of Alpharetta, GA, passed away September 5, 2013, with his loving wife Rosemary and daughter Janice by his bedside. Born in Paterson, NJ, in 1928, he came to Dudley in 1939. He graduated from Eastside High School and worked for Isthmian SS Co. as a Ship’s Purser before attending Fairleigh Dickinson U. in Rutherford, NJ. He graduated in 1951 with a BS in Business Administration and then held jobs at Personal Finance, the Erie RR Company and the 3M Company. In 1959 he met his beloved Rosemary, whom he married in 1961.

After retirement from 3M in Atlanta, GA, he became an active volunteer at the Atlanta Children’s Healthcare, in the Tax-aide program of AARP and the Planning Commission of the City of Alpharetta. He was an active member of Peachtree Presbyterian Church and the Agape Sunday school. Survivors include his wife, Rosemary Jamieson of Alpharetta, son, #11745 Jeffrey Jamieson of Anderson, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Timothy Sermonet of Suwanee, GA; and 5 grandchildren.

Obituraries #6228 William Elliott “Bill” Sperry of New Canaan, CT, passed away at home on April 17, 2013, after a long battle with cancer.

Bill was at Dudley in the 1940s as a camper and Leader. Born in 1930, in White Plains, NY, he graduated from Scarsdale High School, and, in 1951, Williams College. His passion for Williams drove a lifelong service record that was recognized by his receipt of the Rogerson Cup Award in 1996, the college’s highest award for alumni service. He received his MBA from Harvard University in 1953, then served as a First Lieutenant in the Army at the Pentagon. Bill joined Campbell Soup in Philadelphia, and then McKinsey & Co, a strategy consulting firm, focusing on marketing and retailing, and later the Melville Corporation, in both Tokyo and New York. He spent most of his working life with the Amcena Corporation, a holding company created to acquire and operate apparel specialty store chains, where he became Senior Vice President. He spearheaded numerous acquisitions and was a director of the American Retail Group.

Bill served many non-profit organizations, including Colonial Williamsburg and the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum. He was a Dudley camper and leader in the 1940s and ’50s, forming wonderful friendships and being drawn to Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains. Bill was an avid sportsman and loved golf, football, baseball, racket sports, biking, swimming, waterskiing, and boating on Lake Champlain, and generally serving as the camp director for the entire Sperry family.

In addition to his wife, Kitty Sperry, he is survived by four children: Carly Sperry Olson (Jon) of Duxbury, MA; Bill Sperry (Kate) of Darien, CT; #11902 Jim Sperry (Andrea) of Rochester, NY; and Whizzy Sperry Roof (Bill) of Hingham, MA; and two stepsons, Jamie McLean of Brooklyn, NY, and Carter McLean (Sabbath) of Ridgefield, and 9 grandchildren. His wife of 37 years, Nancy Rutherford Sperry, predeceased him in 1995.

#6419 George Austin “Tom” Shutt, died January 19, 2013. He was born July 29,1931 in Bronxville, NY, and grew up in New Rochelle, NY. He graduated from The Lawrenceville School in ’49, and later became a Lifetime Trustee. He graduated from Yale University in ’54 with a BA in Economics, then began work in Dallas while awaiting orders from the Air Force, where he served as Second Lieutenant in cantile Bank, then joined Trammell Crow as its 9th employee and third partner. He served many organizations, including The Hockaday School, Dallas Zoological Society, Dallas County Heritage Society, Friends of the Governor’s Mansion, St. Michael and All Angels Church and the Dallas Museum of Art. He was predeceased by his daughter, Anne Perkins Shutt. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nancy Perkins Shutt, his daughter and son-in-law, Harriet and Chris Burrow, his 2 grandchildren, his brother, Kenneth Shutt, his wife and children, and his sister-in-law, Cherrie Wells, and her children. To all who knew him, he will be remembered as a gentleman in every sense of the word.

#7084 Willard “Spike” Heminway, 79, Greenwich CT, died July 24, at his summer home in Kennebunkport, ME. A resident of Hobe Sound, FL, Mr. Heminway had many passions but especially loved his family; golf and tennis; and reading. Born Aug. 3, 1933, in Rye, NY, Mr. Heminway graduated in 1951 from The Taft School, and in 1955 from Middlebury College. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed mostly in Alaska. He was president of Heminway & Bartlett Manufacturing Co., which had been in his family for five generations. He was past president of the Round Hill Club in Greenwich, and of the United States Senior’s Golf Association. He was well known for wearing colorful socks, a fashion trend adopted by his great friend, George H.W. Bush. The 41st president, when asked by a reporter why he wore such outlandish socks, credited, “My good friend Spike” for enhancing and broadening his sock portfolio. Mr. Heminway is survived by his wife of 50 years, Betsy Rowland Heminway; his daughter Alexandra Anderson and her husband John of Washington, DC; two grandchildren; his sister Betsy Dineen of Rye, NY, and many friends.

Obituaries Peter Diamandis, Rowayton, CT, passed away in June, 2013 at the age of 81. He is the father of #10758 Peter and grandfather of current camper #22584 Skylar. The son of a Greek immigrant father, who owned grocery stores, and an Irish-American mother, Mr. Diamandis was born in Newark, NJ, in 1931, raised in Short Hills and graduated from Millburn High School and Bucknell University 1953. After graduating from Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI, he served three years on a destroyer in the North Atlantic, retiring as a Lieutenant JG. Peter was a leader in the magazine publishing industry in the 1970s-’80s. From 1988-1990, Diamandis was chairman of the Magazine Publishers of America board of directors. Diamandis is survived by his wife Joan, daughter Holly Diamandis Idrizaj, five sons, #12410 Alexander, #11023 Cameron, #10898 Christian, #12652 Jason and #10758 Peter Jr,. and 10 grandchildren.

John F.Craig Jr., formerly of Livingston and Basking Ridge, NJ, passed away at his home in Florida on Sept. 1, 2012. He is the father of #10789 Bill Craig.

John graduated from Montclair High School in ’43 and entered Cornell University. He then served in the U.S. Army, fighting in France, Germany, and Austria, and was aboard ship in the Pacific when Japan surrendered in August 1945. He said that “VJ Day” was the second happiest day of his life (the first being when he married Mary King.) He re-entered Cornell University, graduating with an engineering degree in 1950. He pursued a career in engineering, last with Crane Co., before retiring in 1983. He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years, the former Mary Elisabeth King; a son, John “Chip” Craig of South Yarmouth, MA; a daughter, Cynthia Craig, of Longboat Key, FL; a son, #10789 William H. Craig, of Chatham, NJ, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

at Port Henry, NY, he attended schools in Mineville and Plattsburgh, NY. After serving as a Sergeant in the 20th Air Force in the Pacific Theater, he graduated from Union College in ’50 and Albany Law School in ’56. He practiced law in Plattsburgh and was elected Clinton County Surrogate and County Judge, serving in that role until he retired in 1997. He was Assistant Attorney General of NY State from 1960-73. Judge Lewis was active in many civic activities. He was an avid carver of songbirds in both Naples and in Essex.

Judge Lewis was predeceased by his sister, Joyce Lewis Carlson, of Williston, VT, in 2012, and by his first wife, Margaret McDowell Lewis, in 1983. Survivors include his wife, Renee Rosch Lewis, whom he married in 1996, daughter Susan Serfis and her husband Alan Januszweski, of Plattsburgh, daughter Ann M. Lewis and son-in-law Paul Modrell of Raleigh, NC, son Michael and daughter- in- law Judith of Arlington, VA, and son Charles and his wife Kelly of Greensboro, NC. Additionally, he is survived by 6 grandchildren. He is also survived by four step children: Susan Rosch, Joseph Rosch and spouse Holland Cotter, Brucie Rosch, and Ted Rosch and his wife Christine.

Jeremy J.O. Harwood, Larchmont, NY, died suddenly on August 1, 2013. He was 55 and the father of #21599 Henry Harwood and daughter #21809 Kathleen. Born in Beirut, Lebanon to English parents, he was educated at Charterhouse School.

After R.M.A Sandhurst, he served in the First Royal Tank Regiment in West Germany.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and Oxford University, receiving a law degree. Listed in International Who’s Who Legal as one of the world’s “ten most highly regarded” shipping and maritime lawyers, he was a partner at Blank Rome LLP. Devoted husband, father, and friend to many, Jeremy loved people and lived life to the fullest. He was an avid traveler and collector, a dapper dresser, and had a keen sense of humor. He will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Cate, children Kathleen and Henry, his father, and two sisters.

She was a Masters Swimmer at Hamilton College, and completed Swim Across America, numerous triathlons and the Boilermaker Road Race.

She loved biking, cross-country skiing and walking her dogs. A member of St. James Episcopal Church in Clinton, NY, she sang in the choir. Her diagnosis of MTC in 1999 led to her founding the International Thyroid Oncology Group (ITOG), a non-profit group consisting of 50 leading physicians and scientists from around the world whose mission is to find better treatments for patients with thyroid cancer. In December 2010, Jean testified to the FDA endorsing Caprelsa, the first clinical trial drug ever approved for the treatment of MTC. Beyond her immediate family, Jean is survived by her mother, Sara Jane Gordon; brother, John and his wife, Jennifer and their three children Stuart, Lanier and Reese; her brother, Jeremy and his new bride, Edith; Jeans mother-in-law, Mary Vicks; sister-in-law, Judy Sweet and her children, Bryant and Heather; her sister-in-law, Cathy Jerrard and husband, Dana and their children, Erik, Molly and Kevin. She is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. The family wishes to thank the many dedicated medical specialists that cared for Jean during her

illness. Jean’s grace, selflessness and enthusiasm in the face of overwhelming challenges are an inspiration to all who knew her.

Marian Foster Clifford, 72, of St. Louis, MO, died on September 20, 2013 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Her three sons, #12379 Nick, #12607 Steve and #13149 Charlie all attended Dudley, and the Cliffords hosted numerous Dudley Reunions in their home.

Marian was born in St. Louis on August 23, 1941. She attended Mary Institute and graduated from Chatham Hall in Virginia and from Vassar College. Marian majored in mathematics and worked as a computer programmer for the Naval Station in Newport, RI while her husband Nick was in the Navy. Returning to St. Louis to start a family, Marian worked for 17 years as the Director of Children’s Education at the Church of St. Michael & St. George in Clayton, MO. Marian volunteered for numerous organizations including the Episcopal Church and Vassar College. She was also active in the Bethesda Health Group, the Charless Home and Foundation, Care and Counselling, and the St. Louis Service Bureau. Marian instinctively reached out to include others in her life, opening her home as a refuge to unwed mothers-to-be in the 1970s, serving as a foreign exchange student host mom, participating in Washington U’s Memory and Aging Project, and welcoming strays to holiday dinners. She was the quintessential hostess, an avid golfer, passionate about music, and a beautiful seamstress. Marian is survived by her husband, Nicholas B. Clifford, Sr. and their three sons, Nicholas B. Clifford, Jr. (Maria), Stephen W. Clifford, and Charles H. Clifford (Tara), her brothers #7114 Torrey N. Foster (Anne) of Naples, FL, and A. O. #7500 Bert Foster (Carmella) of Wayzata, MN, and her sister, Claire Evans (Marshall) of Atlanta, GA, and her five grandchildren, to whom she was known as Nana.

Obituaries #8303 Edward H. Bragg Jr. of Greenwich, CT, passed away on October 21, 2013 at this home with Margaret, his beloved wife of 49 years, and family by his side. He leaves Margaret, three sons, Philip, James, and Winston, his daughter-in-law, Jen and two grandchildren, Lily Elisabeth and Chase Edward. Ed was a leader at Camp from 195153. Recalls his old Dudley D-Head #7831 Paul Lutz, “Ed was a dedicated and conscientious leader in Poly Lodge in 1951. #6049 John Strong had been a camper before 1951 and was influential in bringing two of his Princeton roommates, Ed Bragg and #8305 Gilson B “Jick” Grey, III to Dudley. Another Princeton friend, #6322 Bruce MacLaury was also at Camp. These guys were leaders in Cub Alley during my time as DH in 1951. Great guys all! We’ll all miss Ed.” Ed was born in White Plains, NY, on October 31, 1931, graduating from the Brunswick School, Princeton University, O.C.S. at the U.S Coast Guard Academy, and Harvard Business School. He served his country in the Atlantic and Pacific. He was a partner and managing director of Scudder, Stevens & Clark, the investment counsel firm, for 35 years. He served as a Board Member of numerous non-profit organizations.

Marjorie Capen Foster Sheldon, of St. Louis, MO, died peacefully at the age of 101 on June 27, 2013 at her apartment in St. Louis. Her first husband was #2454 H. Torrey Foster, an early Dudleyite. She was the mother of #7114 Torrey Foster, #7500 Bert Foster, and also Dudley Mom, the late Marian Foster Clifford. Eleven of her grandsons, as well as a 4th generation of great-grandsons and great-granddaughters have attended Dudley.

Mrs. Sheldon was born in St. Louis on January 23, 1912. She attended Mary Institute and graduated from John Burroughs in 1930. She then studied in

She married H. Torrey Foster in 1933 and he died in 1973. Mrs. Sheldon subsequently married Frank Sheldon in 1976 who died in 1982. Mrs. Sheldon’s two sisters, Laura Capen Guy and Frances Wentworth Capen predeceased her. Mrs. Sheldon loved being with people and was a devoted friend to many. She was a gracious hostess and entertained beautifully. Hers was a life lived to its fullest, filled with grace, love, and lots of laughs. She was active in volunteer organizations and held board and leadership positions in numerous nonprofits. Mrs. Sheldon is survived by her four children, Torrey N. Foster (Anne) of Naples, FL, Albert O. Foster (Carmella) of Minneapolis, MN, Marian F. Clifford (Nicholas) of St. Louis, MO, and Claire F. Evans (Marshall) of Atlanta, GA, as well as 14 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Mrs. Sheldon is also survived by step-son William B. Sheldon, as well as 5 step-grandchildren and 7 step-great grandchildren.

Stepdaughter Lillian S. Childress and her husband John predeceased her.

#5479 William Lloyd Pierce, Jr., 86, died May 23, 2013 in Savannah, GA. He was born December 30, 1926 in Brooklyn, NY, attended P.S. 32 in Flushing, Long Island, NY, the Foxwood School in Kingsport, Long Island, and The New Hampton School.

During the summers, from 1936-45, he attended Camp Dudley which he always said was one the most pivotal points of his life. He attended Colgate for a year, joined the United States Marine Corps, serving in Guam and Japan. His passions were playing the drums, hockey, baseball and particularly golf, from California to Augusta, GA. He married the love of his life, Lois Cunningham, A highly respected businessman, Bill was VP Sales of Edwards Company, Sales Manager at Federal Pacific Electric Co. and also represented Tork Electric. Friends said he had the heart of a lion and was devoted to making his wife Lois very happy. Surviving are his wife, Lois Cunningham Pierce of Savannah; two daughters, Dale Pierce Taylor of Atlanta and Alison Pierce Turner (Brian) of Middleburg, VA; three grandchildren, and two nieces. He was predeceased by his sister, Lloyd Pierce Butler.

An Old Camper Returns I was once a Dudley Camper in the days of ninety-one And I’ve just run up to Westport for a little old-time fun, Just to have a game of baseball and to swim in old Champlain And to be “one of the fellows” and a youngster once again.

So you tell me this is Dudley! Well I knew the place would change But I hadn’t quite expected to find everything so strange.

And are all these fellow campers? Why, there must be hundreds here, In my time we thought ‘twas crowded with but thirty boys a year.

We had just one little building and a half a dozen tents And the camp ground was a pasture with an old barbed-wire fence And we ate our meals from pie plates and we slept right on the ground.

If at night a rain storm struck us, we awoke next day half drowned.

We played baseball in a corn field and had no swimming dock And our morning dip was taken from a fifteen-foot high rock.

We had beans and pork for breakfast, pork and beans for supper too.

I suppose, to hear me tell it, you will think our joys were few.

Now they tell me you’ve a boat-house and the tents all have board floors And if any day it’s raining you can have your fun indoors With a phonograph to cheer you when you want to hear it play And you eat from china dishes that are washed three times a day.

Yes, I’ve looked the place all over, from the ball field to the cove And it’s absolutely different from the place I used to love.

I’ve seen the Indian Council, and the Lodge and Outdoor Stage And I know that Dudley’s history has turned another page.

And in spite of all the changes there is one thing just the same, It’s the grand old Dudley Spirit that the boys put in the game.

It’s the same old Dudley Spirit that we had so long ago And that makes it still Camp Dudley though the years may come and go.

But you’ve got the same old mountains and you’ve still got old Champlain, So it seems like getting home to me to get back here again.

And you’ve given me a welcome and you’ve made me mighty proud — Made me feel that I’m a camper and a member of the crowd.
