DEDICATION O
NICHOLAS ANSELL
Presented at the Final Banquet by #20001 Marnie McDonagh
nce upon a time, a young South African red haired boy made his way onto the big screen as the star of a cereal advertisement. Born as an only child to his adoring parents, this brief snapshot of stardom as a 6 year old partnered with his parents efforts in raising an independent, courageous and spirited young man, gave him the confidence to leave his homeland in 2009 and travel abroad to experience life at summer camp in the USA. Destined for greatness under the spotlight, decades later this same boy starred as a grown-up Hercules on the Big Stage at Kiniya’s Mimi Lodge during the second session of our 100th season. Nick Ansell’s journey to this defining moment in his acting career has been one full of adventure, excitement, and growth. Hired as a boat driver for his first summer in 2009, Nick invested time and energy into all aspects of his role on the waterfront while making a point of getting to know all areas of Camp Operations. He quickly became a beloved member of the community, among the first to lend a hand to anyone in need. He invested in all parts of Camp, engaging most enthusiastically in all-camp activities. To this day, Nick’s all time favorite game is Counselor Hunt, a game he takes very seriously and claims, with pride, that he is among the last to be found every year! Through the years, Nick worked closely with Marnie and Kat and rose to the role of Waterfront Director in 2010. Displaying excellent leadership skills, overall organization and strategic thinking, Nick moved into the Program Director position in 2012. In this role, Nick was sponsored through Camp Counselors USA to remain at Camp for a year long leadership internship. He lived in Burlington, VT and worked alongside Kat and Marnie during the off season. During this year, Nick travelled to countless Open Houses, participated in Board Meetings, attended off-campus gatherings, and supported off season programs. He joined our year-round weekly workouts at Camp Dudley, and brought his positive attitude and outstanding work ethic to all aspects of his position.
4
In November 2013, after 5 summers on the Kiniya staff, Nick returned home to his family and friends and stepped back into his career as a town planner in Johannesburg. Every year since then, Marnie would attempt to entice him back to the shores of Lake Champlain to no avail. The real world had called and Nick had responded. Until now. In the spring of 2018, Marnie reached out again and this time added Kiniya’s 100th summer as additional motive for him to return. Without missing a beat, Nick agreed. He stepped back through Kiniya’s gates at midseason and jumped right back into his role on the waterfront as though he had never left. For his loyalty and dedication through the years, his tremendous willingness to put The Other Fellow First, his kind demeanor, and his genuine love for Dudley, Kiniya and those he has shared the experience with, we dedicate this edition, Kiniya’s 2018 Spirit, to #21518 Nicholas Ansell.

CHAPEL TALK
#22004 Mary Interdonati Good morning. I would like to start this chapel talk off with a quote, one that I heard for the first time this year that left a huge impact on me. By Nelson Henderson, the quote reads “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you may never expect to sit”. This means to me that you yourself may never see the true impact of your kindness in the world, but those who experience your kindness may be impacted greatly. I would now like you all to angle yourselves so that you can see out the front windows of the dining hall. Through the windows arguably Kiniya’s most marvelous treasures can be seen; nothing other than the towering and beautiful pines. Planted almost one hundred years ago by our founder Helen Van Buren, these trees to me, and to many others, are the most tangible representation of Kiniya’s past and future. They were planted by the first person to call Kiniya her home, and are still enjoyed today by all of us, providing us shade, comfort, and beauty. They will continue to stand in years to come, upholding Ms. VB’s legacy, the legacies of all of the incredible women who have attended camp before us, and of course our own legacy, the campers and staff of Kiniya 2018. What strikes me most about these pines, however, is that they each started from just teeny tiny seeds. Over the years they grew stronger, taller, and offered much more shade for the people below them. Helen did not plant these seeds for herself; she planted them for the future of Kiniya. She herself did not enjoy the shade in which towering pines offer to us today. She just knew little seeds and eventually baby pines, and carried hope that one day the pines would be gentle giants.
34
The story of the pines I believe greatly connects to something that happened in my own life during this past year. Twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, I chose to dedicate my time volunteering in a Bronx community preschool, through a program called Jumpstart. In Jumpstart, I strove to prepare children for kindergarten by providing equal educational opportunity. The goal of the non-profit is to close the achievement gap among all children; an effort to ensure that every child is equally prepared for future schooling. We did this by reading stories to them, teaching vocabulary words, singing songs, doing art projects, and helping them gain alphabet knowledge. I had so much fun being a part of this club because the kids were not only so funny and adorable, but I also loved how I was directly able to contribute to the community. I also did this program my freshman year of college, so at the beginning of this school year, my sophomore year, I was eager to continue my service with Jumpstart. Before we went into the classroom for the first time during this school year, a new challenge presented itself to me, and if camp has taught me anything within the past 9 summers, it is to always take the extra challenge. I found out that there were two duallanguage learners in our classroom, meaning that they only spoke Spanish at home, and were learning English in school. As I’m a Spanish minor in college, I jumped at the opportunity to improve my Spanish while at the same time improving their English. My two tiny pupils, Jared and Daralyn, were just as eager to hang out with me as I was to hang out with them. I tried my hardest to teach them the English words in the books we read and to speak as much English
as possible to expose them to the language. Outside of the classroom I read books and googled countless strategies on how to be a good ESL teacher. Weeks passed, and I began to feel very frustrated in myself, because Jared and Daralyn did not seem to be speaking or learning more English. I felt like I taught them little to nothing. This all changed during a Jumpstart session in mid-winter, a session where Jared was absent from class, so it was just my sassy friend Daralyn and I. Daralyn knew much less English than Jared, so I was ready for a session almost exclusively in Spanish. I started our conversation with a simple question “Where is Jared today?” to which Daralyn responded, in English, “He’s not feeling well”. These four words left me speechless, as I never heard her say things in English other than “Hello” and “Candy”. This little sentence, though I of course cannot take complete credit for it, validated my purpose in Jared and Daralyn’s lives and made me feel as though I was actually teaching them something. After this occurrence, I came to the realization that my impact on Jared and Daralyn will take time, and though I caught a glimpse of their English-speaking successes, I probably will never see the full impact that my efforts will have on them later on. Just like Helen VB and her pines, I helped, or at least I hope I helped, to plant seeds in these children. Ms. Van Buren planted seeds for the future of Kiniya, as I hope I did for the futures of these kids. For the remainder of camp, I challenge you to plant your own seeds. Tell a joke someone who may be having a hard day. Invite a cabin mate who you’ve never hung out with before to a free choice activity. Write a kind note to someone who you admire at camp. Though you may not see the long-term effects of your kind actions, you never know how tall you can make somebody grow. Thank You.

CHAPEL TALK
#22887 Lydia Groves Good morning. Have you ever felt as though you’ve come full circle? In this very moment, I do. Over the past six summers that I have been attending Camp, I’ve sat at the breakfast table and listened attentively to countless of my role models—past and present Leaders and Staff—speak about some special experience in their lives, taking part in this Chapel Talk tradition. Today is like all those other days—only, today, I am on the other side of this tradition, and speaking to all of you, instead of listening. When I think about the role the Kiniya community has played in my own personal growth from camper through leadership and now as a Staff member, I continue to think about what I, an individual, can do to share and pass on the spirit and values of Camp. The word Kiniya means, “to inspire, to recreate:” so how exactly does one accomplish that? I want to share with all of you what I’ve learned about leadership and stewardship over the past few summers. As many choose to do, I’d like to reminisce on my first couple of days at Camp. Like most everyone, I was tentative to the thought of entering a new community without knowing anyone besides my younger cousin Sarah—but, at the same time, I really wanted to experience Camp for myself, after visiting my brother Jake at Dudley four years in a row. The person I remember meeting most clearly was my Leader Caroline. Funny enough, I kept a journal that summer. During flashlight time, I’d chronicle my day from wake-up to day’s end. On the second or third day of Camp, I remember writing something along the lines of, “Wow. Caroline is so cool. One day, I want to be a Leader just like Caroline.”
36
Under her leadership, I transitioned well into the Camp experience, and quickly resonated with Kiniya’s central mission of “leading a life characterized by devotion to others.” Further, the leaders in my cabins and in my majors became my role models in my life at Camp and beyond, and I felt that to aspire to be like them would help me to become a better person. Entering the leadership ranks, I started to search for an answer to the broad question of what it really means to be a leader in a community. Understanding that my friends and I were beginning to follow in the footsteps of our former leaders, it did a lot of reaching outside of our comfort zones to figure out how we could best support our campers and our peers. When confronted with a sticky situation, I was challenged to start trusting my own instincts and judgment. I learned through the leadership ranks that I myself had the potential to be a leader. Even though I am so thankful for all of my former leaders who once showed me the way at Camp, I learned that I didn’t have to be exactly like them to be empathetic, supportive, committed, and honest—in short, to be my own type of leader. We all
THE SPIRIT | 2018
can lead others by example, and in different ways, because we’re all individuals and there’s value in that. Whether you love to cheer on your teammates from the sidelines, you comfort a friend who needs someone to talk to, or you do the right thing when maybe it isn’t the easiest choice, recognize you have “leadership potential”—everybody does. Sometimes, all it takes to become a leader is to strive to be yourself and to be your best self— and in entering our last week of Camp, I challenge all of you to take that first step. Thank you.
“We all can lead others by example, and in different ways, because we’re all individuals and there’s value in that.”

In loving memory of
#25001 Robert “Bobby” Louis Sophia, Jr.
Of all the places Bobby loved, Camp Kiniya became his favorite during his last few years. It was a place where he felt accepted, welcomed and loved. He was deeply thankful for the kindness everyone bestowed upon him there; given the chance to go anywhere, his choice was always “Camp.”
