DEDICATION

BRENDAN “LEFTY” LOUGHMAN #15877 Presented at the Final Banquet on August 18, 2017 by Endy Perry #20764 Awarded every summer at the final banquet, the Last Whistle Dedication is one of the highest honors that one can be awarded at Camp Dudley. Each summer, the dedication is awarded to an individual who has shown an exemplary commitment and love towards this place we all cherish, going above and beyond what is expected of them to make this place even better than it already is. I am privileged to be standing before you now to award this prestigious honor to someone who, just like the esteemed group of recipients who preceded him, has had a profound impact on the lives of every person here tonight. Tonight’s honoree is someone who works so far behind the scenes that you won’t see them in photographs or videos. Despite their absence from our summer memories, this individual works so hard to make sure that we preserve these memories forever. Arriving at camp as a cub in 1993 in Danielson cabin, this person has been at camp for the majority of the past twenty five years. In 2000, he became a leader in the Juniors and led a cabin for five years between 2000 and 2007 even serving as Assistant D-Head in 2007 for the Senior Division. In 2008, this person joined the publications department where he worked on photography, video, and the Dudley Doings. Starting in 2011, this individual served as the communications manager, handling all publications for both Camp Dudley and Kiniya, including editing both the Last Whistle and Spirit, making the Open House video shown at Reunions, editing the CDA News, and maintaining Dudley’s website and social

4

media platforms. His good friend Evan George said “working closely with Matt, he has done more than anyone to shape how the world sees Dudley & Kiniya throughout the years.” During his time at Dudley, he has made a huge impact on everyone he met. His former D-Head, Ben Cady, used to remark about how useful it was to have him in the division. He cited this individual’s love for and commitment to camp as truly inspiring. His teammate on “Team Joe” in 1993, Marlon Fisher, regarded his ability to care so much about others as truly incredible. Specifically, Marlon recognized the help he received from his good friend before and after his tour in Afghanistan. These are only a few examples of stories I received from those who know this person. For the past seven summers, this person has captured every moment of the action, helping to produce high quality content for campers to enjoy during slide shows and in the offseason and for parents to know that their campers are still alive. As a full time staff member, he splits his time between both Dudley and Kiniya, often spending late nights in Burlington editing videos before driving back to Dudley the next morning. Now, we honor the man behind the curtain by bringing him into the light. It is my pleasure to award the 2017 Last Whistle Dedication to my mentor and friend, #15877, Brendan “Lefty” Loughman.

FROM THE EDITOR LAST WHISTLE VOLUME 80 Endy Perry #20764

It is here that you will find the answer to your question. “Where does Endy Perry go all day?” Well, when I am not writing and designing the Last Whistle, I am gathering material for the Last Whistle. While you are off playing your hoop ball or whatever, I am out working on my master scrapbook, a compilation of all of my favorite summer memories. Now that my collection is finished, I guess that I can share it with you too. Putting together the Last Whistle is no easy task and while I undertake the job of creating the book, it takes a whole team to gather the information and images you will see here. It truly is the culmination of the behinds the scene work that makes camp run on a daily basis. Whether you are featured in the book, helped write a piece, stood for a cabin photo, or took a cabin photo, you made this book possible and I cannot thank you enough. There is a long list of people below the table of contents that I want to thank, specifically Dawn Gay for providing information for the roster and staff, the many contributing photographers, Dave Nelson for the beautiful cover image and all those who reviewed and edited the book before it was printed. I also must recognize the publications team that helped shoot photos while I was off making Leaders Cereal, leading a cabin, or directing a show. Without the help of Drew, Kirsten, and our wonderful intern Pete, this book would not be possible. Finally, I must thank the

man whose many contributions are listed to the left of this note, the 2017 Last Whistle dedication recipient Brendan “Lefty” Loughman who reviewed, helped edit, and printed the book. Lefty’s hard work and dedication to camp was crucial to the completion of this book. You will find that there is a new format to the Last Whistle this year. To create a progression of events throughout the summer, the book is organized by week. Each week displays a gallery of events, shows, and chapel services from the magical summer. Hopefully this change will help to tell the summer as a complete story. In addition to getting to work with an incredible team of campers, leaders, and staff, the best part of my summer was being able to deliver entertaining and memorable content to all, so thank you for allowing me to do that. I am sure that the entire Pubs team would agree that our reward is in the work we do and seeing how excited everyone gets when they see a slideshow or get to read this book months or even years after the summer has ended. Well, that’s all I’ve got. Enjoy the book and be sure to look through the directory in the back and write to a friend. Hope to see you back next year for the 134th summer! - #20764

THOMAS WILLIAMS

I came to Dudley in 2009 by mistake. What I mean by “mistake” is that up until May of that summer, I had no intentions of coming to camp at all. In fact, I had barely even heard of this place. After having a boot on my foot since the end of the school year, I wasn’t going to be able to play baseball with my hometown travel team. I was really crushed and my parents knew it. So, after some friends and Andy, the director at the time, pulled a couple of strings I was admitted to camp as a cub in May of 2009. That was the best mistake that could have happened to me.

the third time in 9 months, after I broken my leg and ankle playing football earlier that winter. I was on crutches and in a cast the entire summer, and I was miserable. My job at camp for that summer was as an Aides leader, hiking and helping to aides gain the skill necessary for leadership, all while hiking in the mountains. Crutches and hiking are two things that just don’t go together, ( just ask Bruce Baldwin) and so I had to tell Matt and Evan that I wasn’t going to be able to come to Camp for the second time in 9 years. I was really in the dumps.

As I first walked onto campus, I was completely naïve as to what I was getting myself into, as most cubs are. I was in Owasco surrounded by wacky leaders, loud energetic coaches, incredible new friends, and so many activities I wanted to try. It was the best summer of my life to date. When my parents picked me up, I could not stop talking to them about all the fun I was having, and I told them I wanted to come back to camp every year after.

But once again, I used that summer away from Dudley to appreciate it even more. Not only did I miss the people and activities, but I also missed the atmosphere of camp, the peace that I had when I was here, and the tranquility. This wasn’t because of a decision that I made, but rather circumstances held me back from coming to the place that makes me the happiest. So I applied to be a leader earlier this year, cognizant of the fact that if I didn’t apply, it would become the biggest mistake of my life. That decision has turned out to be the best decision I have ever made, as this has been the best summer of my life. Period.

Yet somehow, leading up to the summer of 2010 I had forgotten about all the amazing new friendships I made with my cabin mates, all the choice times I spent at the countless program areas across camp, and the leaders and staff that made my summer so incredible. I made the decision to play baseball again that summer, a mistake I will regret for the rest of my life. Baseball was cool and all, but the camaraderie of the team was not comparable to a Dudley cabin. All I wanted to do was cheer at a meal, run around in endless green fields and scream my head off signing hymns on Sunday nights. But I did none of those things. Instead, I found myself lost in a summer haze, with my thoughts constantly floating off, thinking about the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain. It didn’t help that my friends that went to camp came back and told me all the amazing things they did that summer. I knew I made a mistake, and I knew I had to rectify it every summer thereafter. I had to fix what I did and make sure I never made that decision again. And that’s what I did. Starting in 2011, I came to camp for the next 5 summers; with a newfound appreciation for all that camp is and has to offer. I thought that I was going to be coming to Dudley every summer for as long as I lived. Then in the spring of 2016, I got horrible news. I was told I had to get unexpected ankle surgery for

90

Right now you might be asking yourself. So what? Why do should I care about this random leaders story? And, to an extent, you’re kind of right. My story is not as relevant to you because you haven’t experienced it. However, what you all should take from my story is that I made a bad mistake of choosing not to come back to camp, and instead of making the same mistake again and again; I learned from it and did something about it. After all, I wouldn’t be standing up here if I didn’t. I could have easily not come back after my cub year, and my life as I know it would be so different. I don’t even want to fathom thinking about it. We all have, and will, make mistakes in our lives, big or small. But it is critical that we do not mope or sulk over our losses, but rather learn from them. Connect with your leaders, work with them to find ways to avoid making the same mistake more than once, and you will have a better summer and become a better person because of it. Please bow your heads. Dear lord, please help us embrace our mistakes so that we may find ways to learn from them. Amen.

CHAPEL TALKS

RYAN KELLEY

I love Lucky Charms. For two reasons. First, they remind me of my years as a camper — yes, Cubbies, we used to have sugar cereal here at Camp. Second, Lucky Charms are always available (and always free, to the left of the coffee machine) in the dinning hall at my school. But this fall, I ate WAY too many Lucky Charms. Overwhelmed with classes, I found myself entrenched in the habit of eating cups of Lucky Charms, surrounded by stacks of books in the library, deep into the night. Halfway through the semester, I was suffering from extreme sleep deprivation and anxiety linked to my academic performance and extracurricular commitments. Yup, if you don’t know me particularly well, I’m a chronic over-committer, constant worrier, and insane perfectionist. Luckily for me, I have an incredible group of friends at school for support. But the person I ended up leaning on the most this fall was my co-editor for the school newspaper, Neena Patel. But I remember when the paper first hired us, I believed I could the job alone. Why did I need someone else? Well my friendship with Neena, characterized by midnight layout sessions and Sunday morning brunches, quickly became the best part of working for the newspaper. Kind, intelligent, and giving of her time and emotional energy, I could not have finished the semester without Neena, and I think she could not have finished the semester without me.

The goal of our leadership development program is to run your own cabin. We attribute a great summer to the Leader, rather than the entire cabin leadership team. But an individual leader can only do so much. As I learned this fall, you and I can’t do everything alone. For no matter how competent I consider myself, and no matter how much I sacrifice my wellness to get stuff done, I am always stronger as part of a committed and dynamic team. Think about Lucky Charms. What would happen if you took out the marshmallows? You’d be left with slightly more sugared Original Cheerios, which are objectively kinda gross. But what if you removed all those oat-like pieces of cereal? I guess you’d have an insane conglomeration of different-colored marshmallow bits that would probably all get stuck to the top of your mouth. Both the marshmallows and the oats need each other. In the same way, strong leaders need each other. So maybe this summer, you and I don’t need to be the star. Trust your team. Yesterdayas I sat on the porch of the Leadership Barn talking (and crying) with Dom Walker about how my puzzle pieces (my quirks, my interests, my passions) fit into the culture of Camp, I trusted the other Senior Leaders to get the job done and to do it well. It takes courage to be a leader in the cabin, on the team, or on the various ADK adventures you will participate in this summer. But it takes even more courage to take a step back and pass the ball to your teammate for the winning shot. That’s shared leadership. It’s hard. It’s difficult for me, and I bet it’s difficult for most of you. But it’s so powerful. Please bow your heads. True leadership is humbling your own leadership and opportunities so someone else can shine in theirs. Amen

Here at Camp, we tend to privilege individual leadership over shared leadership.

1885 AWARDS

History of the Award

The 1885’er is awarded to Dudley campers, leaders, and staff following the completion of their fourth summer at Camp. It was started following the addition of Camp Kiniya as a compliment to the “Kiwi Award.” When individuals are presented with the award, they receive an exclusive “1885” Dudley tie to wear on Parents Weekend in recognition of their accomplishment and their dedication to camp.
