Veteran counting should include the future It happens every year and will continue to happen every year. Residents will gather at the cenotaph on Nov. 11 to remember those who risked life and limb for our freedoms. And what will happen every year is that people will notice the number of veterans will be dwindling. There are less participating in the parade. There are less at the cenotaph. Soon, we all say sagaciously, they’ll all be gone.

Nothing could be further from the truth, Because that old ‘veteran counting’ thing is hogwash. Yes the older vets are passing away, but just look around the crowd at the cenotaph — or across the dinner table at home — and you may be looking at Canada’s next veterans. It could be your husband or your wife or son or daughter, friend or foe. The way this world

continues to fight wars gives us no hope for a real peace. War now isn’t about political or religious strife. It’s a business. It drives economies. It makes poor men rich and live men dead. And it’s not just the arms dealers. It’s the countries themselves who grow customers from war. Customers who are only too willing to pay the cash for weapons or to use violence to get the cash to pay for weapons.

Ironically, at one time, there was some kind of honour in war. Not that the reasons for it were much better, but because it wasn’t so totally marketed. On this Nov. 11 remember the soldiers of yesterday and today and take pause to give your personal thanks. And then give your thoughts to the soldiers of tomorrow, and hold your loved ones’ hands all the tighter.

Make your vote stronger this time

Y

ou can only use one of your votes for your choice of mayor, but you have six votes to fill six councillor positions. If you are adamant about your six choices for council so be it. However, if you are unsure and only favour a few, I would encourage you to only vote for the ones you are passionate about, because it makes your vote stronger. Remember, our next opportunity to make such an important decision is four years away. Please vote! Ted Arbour Campbell River

Putin quote cause for concern

I

was reading, with some delay, your Oct. 24 issue, when I turned to the Opinion page to see what your quote of the day was. To my disgust and horror, I read three sentences condemning terrorism written by Vladimir Putin, one of the biggest state terrorists of the day himself. He has meddled covertly in Ukraine’s politics, annexed part of its territory, instigated and supported

(and is still doing so) – financially as well as with heavy weaponry, manpower and training – a brutal war in Ukraine’s east, and is seemingly going out of his way to demonstrate to the West

in general, and NATO in particular, his purported invincibility. I continue to tell myself, not quite believing it, that the Editor of Campbell River Courier-Islander published Putin’s quote with

the aim to remind its readers that talk is cheap and to warn them that evil has learned to dress up in pretty clothes. But I hope that in the future you will show greater wisdom in choosing your

daily quotes. Bohdana Badzio Campbell River (Editor’s note: Your reasoning for our publishing that quote is quite correct.)
