Robert F. “Bob” Stinson, 73, of Versailles, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. He was born Aug. 28,1928 in Brown County to John WilIiam and Edith Pearl Wear Stinson. He married Leta Phillips on Aug. 15,1953 in Pittsfield, and she survives. Mr. Stinson worked for more than 45 years for both Wabash and Norfolk and Southern Railroads. He attended Brown County schools. Mr. Stinson always enjoyed hunting, playing pool and raising horses. Survivors include his wife, Leta Stinson of Versailles; seven children, Sharon Rigg (husband Jeff) of Mt. Sterling, Wayne Stinson (wife Benny) of Versailles, Janet McCluskey of Mineral Wells, Texas, Mike Stinson (wife Linda) of Meredosia, Bill Stinson (wife Melanie) of Baylis, Larry Stinson (wife Bea) of Versailles and Jody Stinson of Versailles; one brother, Francis Stinson of Macomb; four sisters, Maxine Cummings of Portland, Ore., Helen Gargus of Fredericksburg, Mo., Vi Hill and Joan McCool both of Mt. Sterling; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Robert William Stinson in infancy, and two brothers, Herbert Stinson and in infancy. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 13, in the Hendricker Funeral Home in Mt. Sterling with Rev. Lee Reffett officiating. Burial was in the Hersman Cemetery, south of Mt. Sterling. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Helen L. Swearingin, 86, of rural Mozier, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at her residence. Mrs. Swearingin was born March 30, 1916 in Calhoun County near Belleview to James Frankline and Emma J. Vetter Anderson. She married Howard “Pete” Swearingen on Aug. 27, 1941, in Clarksville, Mo. He preceded her in death Dec. 2, 1991. Survivors are two sisters, Dorothy Crowder of Edgewood, Mo. and Wilma Welch of Eolia, Mo., and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilbert and Willard Anderson and three infant brothers. Mrs. Swearingin enjoyed fishing, visiting with friends, and helping her family. Services were conducted Friday, Aug. 9, at Ward-Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill. Burial was in Poor Cemetery near Mozier. Memorials may be made to the Cole Stickman Memorial or to a burial fund in her name.

Loren E. “Bud” Williams, 68, of rural New Canton, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana, Mo. as the result of an auto accident. He was born Jan. 28, 1934 in Derry Township in Pike County, in the family home to Leonard James and Donna M. Wilson Williams. He married Karen Alexander Jan. 13, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nev. and she survives in rural New Canton. He is also survived by three sons, Royce Hallock of Corpus Christie, Txas, Randy Hallock of Lake in the Hills and Nolan Hallock of Ionica; one daughter, Melodie Swanlund of La Moille; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Robert of Barry and Jack of El Dara; and three sisters, Nadine Wood of Cincinnati, Dolline Maddox of Quincy and Ilah June Walhberg of Palm Springs, Calif. He was preceded in death by one grandson; one brother, Hayes Williams; and two sisters, Wanda Raferty and Baulah Williams. Mr. Williams lived his entire life in Pike County where he farmed and did construction. He enjoyed traveling and spending time visiting and helping people in the community. Funeral services were held Sunday at Barry United Methodist Church with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry. Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry handled the arrangements. Memorials are suggested to the Barry Fire Department.

Patricia Pryde Patricia Mae Pryde, age 61, of Baylis, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at her residence. She was born Oct. 8, 1940 in Decatur, to Everett and Ruth Cremeens Hoffman. She married Robert J. Pryde on April 15, 1976 in Maroa and he survives. Also surviving are her parents, Everett and Ruth Hoffman of Lebanon, Mo.; five daughters, Vicki Duncan (husband Chuck) of Andova, Minn., Kris Rinkenberger (husband Chuck) of Morton, Tammy Brown of Springfield, Julie Pryde of Champaign (partner Tamara Wait) and Kristy Davey (husband Jeff) of Plainfield; two sons, David Pryde (wife Cara) of Nobelsville, Ind., and Terry Teel (wife Betsy) of Heyworth; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Katie Mitchell of Lebanon, Mo. Mrs. Pryde was a graduate of Maroa High School in Maroa, and attended Illinois State in Bloomington. She was a past employee of Cummings Foods in Pittsfield, where she worked in the bakery department. She was an avid sportsman and trap shooter who received several awards for her ability in shooting trap. She was a member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church in Pittsfield. Services were held Saturday Aug. 10, at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield, with Rev. Kent Smith officiating. Interment was held privately. Memorials may be made to Blessing Hospice of Pike County c/o the funeral home.

Timothy Lange Timothy Michael Lange, 12, of Mt. Sterling, died Aug. 7, 2002 in Culbertson Memorial Hospital in Rushville. He was born July 29, 1990 in Quincy to Robert D. and Deanna L. (Martin) Lange. Survivors are one brother, Luke A. Lange of Mt. Sterling, two aunts, one uncle, a cousin, and grandparents, Junior and Janet Lange of Quincy and Arthur and Betty Martin of Barry. Tim loved basketball, bike riding and playing Playstation with his brother. Funeral services were Saturday, Aug. 10, at Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Burial was in Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry.

Sean Quinn Sean Luke Quinn, infant son of Gary Russell and Kathleen “Katie” Dougherty Quinn, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria. He was born July 31, 2002 in Peoria. Surviving are his parents, Gary Russell and Kathleen “Katie” Dougherty Quinn of Quincy; maternal grandparents, Jerry and Deborah Dougherty of Fish Hook; paternal grandparents, Gary and Joan Quinn of Fish Hook; maternal great-grandfather, Vernon “Tuffy” Dougherty of Fish Hook; maternal great-grandparents, Lloyd and Ruth Crigler of Paris, Mo.; paternal great-grandparents, Phil and Evelyn Quinn of Mt. Sterling; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandmothers, Bernice Dougherty and Kathleen Crigler; and paternal great-grandparents, Edward and Thelma Bentley Private services were held Sunday, Aug. 11. Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the family.

John Cox John W. Cox, 74, of Bartonville, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Morton Terrace in Morton. He was born April 17, 1928 in Milton to Wesley Cox and Norma Perry. He married Joyce E. Motteler on Sept. 8, 1979 in Peoria. She survives. Also surviving are one son, George Cox (Conda) of Pekin; two daughters, Norma Carlyle of Peoria and Mary Pille (Steve) of Glasford; two stepsons, David Allen and Pat Pfoff (Diane) of Peoria; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two half brothers. He retired in 1986 after 31 years of service as a machinist for Caterpillar Tractor Company in East Peoria. He was a member of Caterpillar Retirees Club, advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Berea Baptist Church in Bartonville. Graveside services will be held today, Aug. 14, at Blue River Cemetery in Detroit. Rev. William Pierce will officiate. Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer’s Association, American Heart Association, or Berea Baptist Church. Davison-Fulton Bartonville Chapel handled the arrangements.

Karen Sue Williams, 40, of rural New Canton, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield from injuries sustained in an auto accident, Aug. 7. She was born Dec. 3, 1961 in Hannibal to Lawrence C. and Clara M. (Baughman) Alexander. She married Loren (Bud) Williams on Jan. 30, 1997. He died Aug. 7 as a result of the same accident. Survivors are her parents in Barry; grandmother, Sarah Baughman of Clayton; one brother, Larry J. Alexander of St. Louis, Mo.; one sister, Mrs. Joseph Steven (Linda M.) Drion of St. Louis, Mo.; one niece, one nephew, one aunt, one uncle, and numerous cousins. She loved to travel with her husband and helping Bud on the farm. She also was an avid coupon collector and cook. She was a member of the Barry First Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. at Barry First Baptist Church. Visitation will be tonight, Aug. 14, from 4-8 p.m. at Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry. Memorials are suggested to Barry Fire Department or Barry First Baptist Church.

Ruth I. Blair, 87, of Petersburg, died Aug. 7, 2002, at Menard Convalescent Center in Petersburg. She was born May 7, 1915 in Pittsfield to Lewis J. and Ida RianCawthon. She married Elder Joseph D. Blair in Crown Point, Ind. on Aug. 3, 1933. He died Jan. 15, 1982. She was a member of Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Survivors are two daughters, Nadine L. (husband Arthur L.) Barrington of LeMesa, Calif. and Nora M. (husband James) Zimmerman of Petersburg; one son, Michael A. (wife Connie) Blair of Mesa, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, six sisters and five brothers. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 13, at Hurley Funeral Home in Petersburg. Elder James Ridings officiated. Burial was in Oakford Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church or the Blair family.

Leland P. Gourley, age 71, of Winchester died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at Passavant Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born July 24, 1931 in Montezuma Township in Pike County to the late Thomas and Leta Ottwell Gourley. He married Dorothy Jean Bartlett on June 21, 1952 in Pocahannis, Ark. She survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Debra McLeese of Jacksonville, Donna Hurt (husband Bobby) of Glasgow, and Paula Holmes (husband Larry) of Glasgow; one son, Robyn Gourley (companion Debbie Dixon) of Manchester; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Veda George (husband Buell) of White Hall; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mary Norton and Freda Whited; four brothers, Everett Gourley, Lloyd Gourley, Arnold Gourley, and Chester Gourley. Mr. Gourley was a carpenter for many years working for John Chumley in White Hall, before becoming self-employed in1966. He retired in 1990. He was a member of the Glasgow and Patterson Saddle clubs and loved his horses and enjoyed trail riding. He loved his family and enjoyed having company. He also loved to square dance and was a past member of the Scott County Square N Aders. He was an avid Cardinal fan. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester with Ray Hacker officiating. Burial will be in Glasgow Cemetery in Glasgow. Memorials may be made to Scott County EMS.

Richard Myers Richard L. Myers, 90, formerly of Rockport, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at the Barry Community Care Center. Mr. Myers was born Feb. 7, 1912 in Rockport to Warren and Lizzie Sears Myers. He married Iona Sims on Dec. 31, 1934 in Quincy and she survives in Quincy. Also survivoring are a son, Kent (Kathy) Myers of New Canton; a daughter, Sandra (Larry) Payne of Quincy; a sister, Alma Sims of Grass Valley, Calif.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; one niece and one great-niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, one great-grandson and one greatgreat-granddaughter.

He was baptized in the Christian faith in Dutch Creek in 1924. He was a member of the Rockport Masonic Lodge until it closed, then continued at the Pittsfield lodge for many years. He worked at the CB&Q Railroad in his early years and worked as a carpenter in the area until his retirement in 1977. He enjoyed helping his family with carpentry projects and did so well up into his 80s. Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 10, at 1 p.m. at the Ward-Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill with the Rev. Steven Myers officiating. Burial was in Samuel Taylor Cemetery at Rockport. Memorials are suggested to the Barry Community Care Center bus fund.
