2006 Five Alton High School students and one Jersey Community High School student have been charged with criminal misdemeanors after a “prank” at Jersey Community High School last Thursday. Major Frank Scoggins of the Jerseyville Police Department said the AHS students planned the prank with the help of the JCHS student who was in the class that was targeted. The charges were filed after four of the AHS students, who were out of school because of spring break, climbed through windows at JCHS and squirted the class with squirt guns. Witnesses said the four intruders were clad in black and had black bandanas over their faces. After dousing the class, the four students fled the classroom and ran out a side door where a fifth student was waiting in a vehicle. These students were almost immediately apprehended by Jerseyville police officers who had been called moments earlier by a neighbor who had seen suspicious activity. Students in driver’s education classes throughout the state may have to spend a few more hours driving with their parents or other designated individuals before finally getting their driver’s licenses. Governor Rod Blagojevich is expected to sign legislation that would double the number of required hours a student must drive with a parent from 25 to 50.

JERSEY COUNTY JOURNAL
2011 It didn’t take long for the Jersey County Sheriff’s Department to hone in on a subject who is believed to have broken into the department’s storage facility prior to starting a fire in an attempt to cover his tracks in the early hours of Sunday morning. Cody Branham, 25, of Jerseyville is currently facing burglary and arson charges in Jersey County Circuit Court. Charges against Branham were filed April 19 and bond was set at $35,000. Kallal said entry into the storage facility was gained by breaking through a wireless reinforced window. Several Grafton residents are up in arms about Jersey Community School District Unit 100’s plan to change the name of Grafton Elementary School, and vow to do everything in their power to prevent it from happening. Grafton resident Joyce Hurst addressed the Grafton City Council at Tuesday night’s meeting and said she disagrees with the school board’s decision. Several areas of Jerseyville will be out of the dark as the city council granted approval to install 15 new street lights in the city at Tuesday night’s council meeting. Jeff Soer, director of building and zoning, said the new lighting will be installed on East Fairgrounds Ave., East Spruce Street, Old Fidility Road, June Street and Hollow Ave.

Community-wide yard sale a big hit The Annual Community-wide Yard Sale event was this past weekend in Jersey County, Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9. Hundreds participated in this community-wide event. The rain-or-shine event started on Friday, April 8, despite the cool, windy conditions. The weather proved to be of no concern for the yard salers in this community as hundreds showed up to find their first bargains of the weekend. At The 2nd Time around Consignment Shop, Angie Elliot opened her doors early to yard sale enthusiasts, offering in store specials all weekend. Elliot started this community-wide event just last year and hopes to continue with her partnership with JCBA’S Molly Rowling. This year, there were over 50 indi-
viduals’ sales registered including over 15 homes in Elsah Hills Subdivision and three businesses took part in this year’s event. Restaurants in town benefited greatly including State Street Bar & Grill who offered a 20 percent off special. Lula Bells, a local home décor store, offered specials inside on new merchandise as well as used merchandise outside to her consumers. The JCBA and 2nd Time around consignment shop appreciate everyone who contributed to this event. Next year’s Community Wide Yard Sale weekend will take place the second week of April. If you should have any questions or feedback please don’t hesitate to contact the JCBA office at 639-5222 or Elliott at 2nd Time Around Consignment Shop, 639-7253.
