Donald Masters
Donald R. Fergurson, 77 of Nebo, died Tuesday evening, May 12, 2015 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy. Donald was born on April 25, 1938 in Greenfield the only child of the late Ebert and Gertrude Jouett Fergurson. Donald graduated from Greenfield High School and in earlier years worked at a Laclede Steel Company in Alton. He retired from Illinois Department of Transportation where he worked as the ferry operator on the Illinois River at Kampsville. Donald was a former chairman of the Republican Party in Calhoun County. He also farmed and was a real estate broker. Donald loved going “picking” and buying and selling his picking treasures. He is survived by three sons, Stacey Fergurson of Tennessee; Shaun Manker of Pittsfield and David (Kelly) McNealy of California; five grandchildren, Caleb Fergurson of Tennessee; Brandi Fergurson of Alabama; Kelsey, David and Kaylea McNealy all of California in addition to special daughter-in-law, Penny (Jason) Taylor of Pittsfield and extended family member Aaron Bell of Nebo. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with David Hamilton officiating. Visitation was held prior to the service at the funeral home. Private interment will be in the Greenfield Cemetery in Greenfield. Memorials are suggested to be made to Blessing Hospice of Pike County. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.nieburfh.com. Donald L. Masters, 83, of Jacksonville, died Sunday, May 17, 2015 at his home. He was born Aug. 28, 1931 in Greenfield to Fred J. and Dorothy A. (Ford) Masters. He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1949 and attended the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, graduating from the College of Agriculture in 1953. During his four years on campus, he lived at Nabor House Fraternity. He served two years in the US Army in White Sands, N.M. Donald farmed on a Centennial farm in Greenfield for the majority of his life. Don married Jane Anderson in Urbana Dec. 20, 1959, and she survives. Also surviving are two sons, Frank A. (Elaine) Masters of Janesville, Wis. and Carl J. (Debbie) Masters of Greenfield; four grandsons, Derek and Adam Masters of Janesville, Wis. and Isaac and Hunter Masters of Greenfield; one sister, Eleanor (David) Bossert, of Dwight; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Don had served for several years on the boards of directors of both the Greene County Service Company and the Greene County Farm Bureau. He was a voracious reader, a devoted fan of the Fighting Illini and a passionate supporter of the many activities that his four grandsons were involved in. Cremation rites have been accorded and visitation will be from 4 until 8 pm Friday, May 22, at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 331 E. State Street, Jacksonville. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the church. The Shields-Bishop Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to H.E.L.P.S. Ministry in Jacksonville, or the Jacksonville Food Bank.
Clara M. Lake, 85, of Carrollton died on Thursday May 14, 2015 at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Jerseyville. Born in Carrollton on Dec. 31, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary Behnen Steinacher. She married Charles F. Lake on June 1, 1950 and he preceded her in death on Oct. 17, 2009. Surviving are her children, John (Kay) Lake of Ohio, Ken ( Bev) Lake of Carrollton, Dan (Gayle) Lake of Carrollton, Kathy Schnettgoecke of Carrollton and Jane (Eric) Tucker of Carrollton; 14 grandchildren, Shannon Lake, Brian (Sharon) Lake, Jeremy (Mandi) Lake, Kyle (Terra) Lake, Scott Lake, Melissa Lake, Matt (Christie) Lake, Anna (Evan) Albrecht, Nathan (Karen) Schnettgoecke, Megan (Clint) Dambacher, and Chad (fiancé Alexandria Flatt) Schnettgoecke, Justine (Jay) Eilerman, Lynley (fiancé Sam Estes) and Lucas Tucker; step-grandchildren, Tyson and Jason Bottom and Robyn Maag; great-grandchildren, Charli and Kennedi Lake, Cameron Lake, Hadley and Cody Lake, Hannah, Kadyn and Justin Lake, Lakely, Landon and Lane Albrecht, Hank Schnettgoecke, Morgan Dambacher and Brookelyn and Bailey Eilerman; a sister, Henrietta (husband Herb) Hartman of Carrollton; and a brother, Bob (wife Verna Mae) Steinacher of Carrollton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son-in-law, Mark Schnettgoecke; a sister, Cecilia Kirbach; and four brothers, Joe, Jerry, Henry Carl and John Steinacher. Clara was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Carrollton. She was a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Clara truly loved living on the farm and being close to her children (14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren with 2 more on the way). She spent many hours with her grandchildren playing cards and games. Visitation was from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 16 at St. John’s Catholic Church. Mass was celebrated following visitation. Betty Scott Betty Jacqueline Scott, 87, of Jerseyville died at 9:16 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2015 at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born Nov. 10, 1927 in Alton, daughter of the late Oral and Louise (Minnnick) Kasinger. She married Edward W. Scott June 12, 1948. He died July 31, 2013. She had been a homemaker and LPN. She was a member of Rosedale Methodist Church, Jersey County Home Ext., and Jersey County Garden Club. She was very strong in her Christian faith, loving her grandchildren, gardening, flowers and birds. She was on the first PTA board established at Fieldon Elementary School, Park Interpreter at Pere Marquette State Park, and a member of the American Coon Hounds Association, winning many awards showing Black & Tan Coon Hounds. Survivors include daughters, Jacqueline LeDuc of Jerseyville, Judy (Vince) Espinosa of Carrollton, Vicki (Kent) Smith of Jerseyville, Robin (Mike) Green of Grafton and LuAnn Dahn and her companion, Sig Wittman of Grafton; 16 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Nancy (Roy) Hyman of Godfrey and Patricia (Lyle) Laslie of Godfrey. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a grandson, Cole Dahn; son-in-law, John LeDuc, sisters, Beverly Kelly and Sharon Ray; and brothers, John and Glenn Kasinger. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Roger Czaia officiating. Burial will take place in Fieldon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Rosedale Methodist Church, American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association.
Donald E. Cress, 82, of Kampsville died at 10 p.m. Thursday, May 14, 2015 at Christian Hospital N.E. in St. Louis. He was born May 26, 1932 in Belleview, son of the late William Bryan and Zeda Z. (Nievus) Cress. He married Mary Ann (Benz) Cress and she died in 1977. He had worked at Owens Ill. Glass in Alton, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the NRA and enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting. Survivors include two sons, Steven Eugene Cress of Godfrey and Ronald Dean Cress of Carlin, Nev.; three daughters, Victoria Gail Rose of Salem, Debra Diann Geers of Carrollton and Amy Marie Cress of Bethalto; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Garnell Dirksmeyer of Hardin and Lela Kelly of Bethalto. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Stacey; four brothers, James, Eddie, Joe, Ernest and infant, Milo Cress; four sisters, Loreen Howland, Erma Walton, Wanda Schanato and Shirley Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at Hanks-Gress Funeral Home in Hardin, where funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, The Rev. Paul D. Frazier will officiate. Burial will take place in Summit Grove Cemetery in Kampsville. Memorials may be given to Summit Grove Cemetery or the charity of one’s choice.
Mary ‘JoAnn’ Roberts Mary “JoAnn” Roberts, 82, of Carrollton died on Tuesday afternoon May 12, 2015 at the White Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Carrollton on Dec. 28, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Ernest F. and Nellie Varble Roberts. She is survived by two sistersin-law, Hazel Roberts and Peggy Roberts, both of White Hall; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Frances Vanetta Tribble, Hilda Carter, Lola Elmore, Carl “Doc” Roberts, Earl W. “Jack” Roberts and Ernest Roberts and an infant. She resided in Carrollton on Maple Street for a majority of her life, working at Boyd Memorial Hospital as a CNA for 32 years. After retiring she enjoyed caring for many young children in her home. She was a member of the Carrollton United Methodist Church where she attended as long as her health permitted. She will be remembered by many for her love of children. Visitation was from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 16 at the Carrollton United Methodist Church. Funeral services followed visitation and burial took place at Carrollton City Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Carrollton United Methodist Church or Boyd Memorial Hospital. Condolences may be left online at: www.airsman-hires.com.
