Design I Fall 2015 Sarah Gamble Project:Archival Space Description: A space based on the concept of “ensemble” to create an archival space and incorporate a performance space to relate to what is being archived. The composition and placement of structures in the site derive from the idea of creating three main structures that form the “ensemble”, ultimately encompassing the funcional needs of the program. In this project, jazz trumpets were being archived, with a small, intimate performance space.

Design II Spring 2016 Smilja Milovanovic-Bertram Project: Bird Blind Location: Laguna Gloria, Austin, TX Description: A bird blind, a space where visitors can remain unnoticed or camaflouged by the structure, so as to allow for close proximity in observation of birds in nature. The program for the blind needed to include an open gathering space, a boxed-in area for the bird blind, a place for posting visitor information, a path, and a ledge for seating. The site for the structure was Laguna Goria in Austin, Texas.

Intermediate Design II Spring 2016 Charlton Lewis Project: BLUEPRINT; cultural redevelopment Location: Genoa, Italy Description: Blueprint is the title of the city vision given by Renzo Piano Building Workshop as the firm’s contribution to the future porto, industrial, planning and social development of Genoa. The Blueprint competition seeks to address urban voids in the city, and to recover the Genoa International Trade Fair, designed by Jean Nouvel. The goal of the redevlopment aims to engage the city as a tourist destination and provide public infrastructure for residents. This design seeks to recover the site by creating spaces that allow for varying levels of dwelling and passage, and creates interstitial spaces that allow visitors to filter in and occupy the space not only in the form of enclosed buildings, but also as a public outdoor space.

Firm Work: Internship GFF Architects Summer 2017 Dallas, TX Project: Bark+Build* Description: Each year GFF Architects participates in the SPCA of Texas’s annual Bark+Build event to design a doghouse. All doghouses are submitted from various companies that are paired with contractors who donate their time and resources to design and build them. The doghouses are put on display in Dallas for a short time, then auctioned off with all proceeds benefitting the SPCA of Texas. For this submission, the firm allowed interns to take full charge of the design and submission. Intermediate Design III MJ Neal Fall 2017 Project: Precedent Analysis Description: Given building precedents whose aesthetics and guidelines followed principles which would arise in our studio projects, the studio worked in pairs to derive diagrams that evoked the ephermeral qualities of the spaces as well as investigated the structural systems employeed in each. Intermediate Design III Fall 2017 MJ Neal Project: Structural Derivation from Precedent Analysis Description: Based on previously assigned precedent analysis, a structural system was created that functioned off of a design based operational logic. Two sets of structures were derived, one operating on a scale using small structural units, and the other using larger structural units, each following the same design logic, but functioning different structurally.

Intermediate Design III Fall 2017 MJ Neal Project: Guelph Farmers’ Market Location: Guelph, Canada Description: Using the Lyceum Fellowship Competition as a guideline and looking toward future growth in Guelph, Canada, this intervention seeks to provide a new cultural hub for community development. Integrating greenhouses into the project’s program of a farmers’ market and immigrant housing aims to bridge a cultural and socioeconomic gap between locals and newcomers. Greenhouses on site would provide resources for the community to come together to grow and supply food items to the farmers’ market. Dividing the site into smaller buildings with external circulation allows the site to become a public amenity, with circulation accommodating the larger, urban scale of the city.
