"saintsolidaire" method
The St Solidaire project is a method inspired by the architect Walter Segal, the «Segal’s method». He imagined a guide according to which inhabitants can build their own house with the materials available on the market. Based on this observation, we have re-imagined on our scale a constructive, social and economic method to meet the demand for housing in the center of Lille (France).
The St Sauveur district in the center of the city is a 23-hectare wasteland. Legally blocked, it is an administrative and environmental hollow that we decided to exploit. The Gehl agency’s project was selected to build housing in a neighborhood undergoing renewal. We based ourselves on what will be built in the future but in a «Habiter2030» approach we decided to propose a counter-project. Thus, we have established a method of a house that can be self-built by its inhabitants. Placed on concrete bases (made by professionals), we give the future inhabitants the possibility to go to the workshop near the hall to start learning and building their own house, which can go up to 3 stories. The notions of playfulness and economy fed the method to make it a real operating mode.
