UnitedNationsCommissionon Science&Technologyfor Development
VivianaYugueros
The United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD), is focused on discussing current issues regarding science and technology and its effects on society. However, during the Colegio Bolívar MUN debate, the commission will focus on discussing the government's power and invasion of citizens’ technological privacy and usage and development regulation of A1-drivenwarfaresystems.
Initially, the commission started discussing the impact of the collection of users’ internet information by technologicalcompaniesandgovernments. Yet, the focus of the debate was around generating analytics and eventually data-collecting systems that result in
control over citizen’s information. Delegations such as China openly recognize the use of facial recognitionand technological support to control and trace down China citizens. After this confession, controversial opinions were generated within the commission and eventually led todelegationssuchasJapan and Apple to proceed with presenting a GoogleSlidespresentationexposingChina to various forms of oppressionthroughthe control of technology Within the accusations, China was incriminated of implementing social creditswhichresulted in an unprecedented way of violating privacy and additionally using technological supporttocommitapossible genocide against the Uyghur population andothermostly-Muslimethnicgroups.
On the other side, Apple was also accused of gathering customer data without consent via apps like the App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV, and Stocks However, shortly after, the delegations were surprised by the intervention of Simon Mejia, a current commission president that during one intervention represented the CEO of TikTok.
During the intervention, delegations of the commission, especially the United States, were accused of using TikTok as a control method of user information. The accusation, made by the CEO of TikTok, generatedfurthertensions around the economic benefits ofappssuch as TikTok, and therefore delegates were forced to analyze if the gain economic benefits from this app justifies the violationoftheprivacyofitscustomers.
