Februhairy came again this year, with juniors, seniors, and faculty members growing beards for a true “fun”raiser which collected $1,800. This year’s beneficiary was the Soldiers Animal Companions Fund, helping soldiers serving in the Middle East bring home dogs and cats they have adopted in these war-torn nations.

Christopher Bilinsky RUTGERS UNIVERSITY, Camden - Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in psychology and childhood studies POST GRADUATION: Will attend graduate school at Rider University to pursue a master's degree as an education specialist in the school psychology program Caitlin Brown In early 1997 I was contracted by a major U.S. oil company to conduct a detailed logistics routing survey for a proposed 1,500 mile crude oil pipeline originating near Tengiz in northern Kazakhstan, terminating in Novorossysk at the top of Russia’s Black Sea. Of course like all good things my 3-month adventure would take me across the Kalmikya Plateau one of Russia’s hottest, most arid, remote desert tracts, in the heat of summer. Being a foreigner and without a Russian driving permit, my client provided a 17 year old stick shift, non-air conditioned Volga sedan, complete with Victor, our driver, and Yuri, translator and government affairs representative. A long adventure looms before me.

Senior Rich Ormsby participated in the "Newstudies" program at KYW Newsradio 1060 this year. “Newstudies” is an annual high school program that attracts students from the tri-state area. Students study under a working news reporter, learning the mechanics of writing a story for radio and speaking about different topics relating to the news industry, including ethics in the news. “After writing a story and getting it approved, I headed over to the recording studio to read my story. The story was then broadcasted to listeners in the area,” said Rich. “The two-and-a-half month program ended with graduation featuring Larry Kane as keynote speaker. I really enjoyed learning about the industry under KYW reporter John McDevitt (pictured with Rich) and getting to record my story. Hearing it on the radio was awesome. Touring the CBS TV studio and speaking with Jim Donovan was also a highlight.”
After the third or fourth day of long monotonous driving trading music cassettes of Russian military marches and American country western Yuri asked me to sing “America’s Song”. A bit confused I asked what he was talking about. “You know”, says Yuri, “the America’s song you play at parades, patriotic meetings and sporting games.” Our national anthem!!~ With gusto I responded. Victor and Yuri then burst into Russia’s national anthem which I immediately recognize as Camden Catholic’s Alma Mater – the same tune and melody, so I join the chorus. We’re each amazed. When I explain the coincidence I’m asked to sing CCHS Alma Mater. Soon we’re all singing together in Russian and English. What a trip. Remember I have almost 3-months more to sing-a-long! Each morning thereafter I managed to create new lyrics for my hosts, most renditions were obviously humorous and unrelated to anything. Can I remember any of the words today? Nope, but I sure can improvise.
