The Aging in Place focus team includes representatives from different organizations including Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Florida Division, Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), Florida Department of Elder Affairs (DOEA), FDOT, South Florida Regional Planning Council (SFRPC), Tallahassee Senior Services Center, and University of South Florida .
The team supports the Coalition’s initiatives, programs, and projects that promote an individual’s ability to age in place . Their work includes promoting roadway design features that allow people to stay where they want to live, and increasing the number of lifelong communities in the state .
Key Accomplishments:
Walking Booklet
In collaboration with Alert Today Florida and the Transitioning from Driving team, the team developed the Walking Booklet: Tips on How to Use Transportation Options in Florida . This new resource provides education on the benefits of walking, safe walking tips, and explanation of the different pedestrian traffic control devices, and some key Florida pedestrian laws . This booklet will help people safely explore their community on foot and is available free of charge from the Coalition’s Resource Center webpage .
Focus Group for Engineers and Planners at Transportation Symposium
The team conducted an interactive focus group session with 213 participants at FDOT’s Transportation Symposium in December 2020 . The session focused on the available resources and design features that support age-friendly communities and safe mobility for all road users . The participants provided input on specific areas of interest to include in the future training course to benefit engineers, designers, and planners . Eighty-eight percent of the participants indicated their interest in attending when it becomes available .
Safe Mobility for Life: Preparing Florida Roads and Communities Training Course Outline
The team completed an outline for a computer-based training course to help engineers and planners address the specific transportation needs of Florida’s aging road users . The goal of this training is to raise awareness of and establish applied knowledge used by engineers, planners, and associated professionals on preparing the roads and communities to meet the transportation needs of Florida’s aging population . It also provides the opportunity to educate on the impact of aging on driving and what resources, including data, are available for their use to help reduce the traffic fatalities and serious injuries for Florida’s aging road users .
