The Program Management, Data and Evaluation focus team is represented by each focus area team leader including the FDOT, FSU Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy, FSU College of Medicine, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), and University of Florida (UF) .
Working together the team leads and guides the Coalition as they work to develop resources that support the goals of Florida’s Aging Road User Strategic Safety Plan . The team works on expanding the Coalition’s membership to ensure there is multidisciplinary involvement and an understanding of aging road user issues across the different regions of the state .
Key Accomplishments:
Published 2021 Aging Road User (65+) Priority County Data
The Coalition released an annual list of priority counties in March 2021 . This year, to provide easier access and visualization, the team updated SafeMobilityFL .com/Data webpage and incorporated aging road user data into the FDOT’s interactive GIS-based website, eTraffic, a data-sharing platform . This change allows the Coalition` to display various layered information at the state and county level and build upon a data-driven approach that aligns with FDOT’s target of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries .
Conducted Research to Support Aging Road User Safety and Mobility
Research is a cornerstone of FDOT’s involvement in the Safe Mobility for Life Program and this year the team completed three projects that will help the Coalition meet the safety and mobility needs of Florida’s aging population . Below is a summary of each project:
» Identifying and Prioritizing Target Regions to
Conduct Outreach Activities. This project, conducted by Florida International University, helped develop a
GIS-based approach that strategically identifies and prioritizes specific regions where the Coalition should implement outreach activities . Results of this research were incorporated into eTraffic and will be used to support the Coalition’s proactive and data-driven approach to distribute safety and mobility resources in areas of concern throughout the state .

» Develop, Refine, and Validate Autonomous Vehicle Survey Tool. This project, conducted by UF, created and validated a survey tool that will help understand older adults potential use of autonomous vehicles and ride sharing services as viable transportation options .
» Safe Mobility for Life Survey. This project, conducted by the FSU Pepper Institute, helped the team learn the transportation-related behaviors and attitudes of Florida’s road users 50 and older . The Coalition will use these research results to guide the development of outreach and marketing materials to support community events and statewide educational campaigns .
