Cambridge Connection – School Newsletter Note from Our PTA President

May 2015

Dear Cambridge Families, Summer vacation is JUST around the corner, with less than 13 actual school days to go (but who's counting)! There is still a lot of learning and fun activities yet to take place! This is always one of my favorite times of year. We've made it through the winter slump; with no snow days I might add, the flowers are blooming and we get the pleasure of waking up each morning to birds chirping not to mention the end of the year activities at school.

We had a BUSY April! Our 3rd and 4th graders prepped really hard for their state MAP testing which was completed on April 24th.

The kindergarten music show, the Art show, the spring book fair, and kindergarten screenings were also in April. If you haven’t had a chance to come see the beautiful art work that Cambridge students created we encourage you to come see it! In May we have field day and a super fun pride celebration! Our PTA board is super excited to announce that we are donating a bounce house obstacle course for the Pride Celebration. I'm sure the kids will absolutely love running and bouncing their way through that repeatedly! PTA is also gearing up for our last event of the year which is Morning with Mom! Wow, the school year is really winding down now that I've said all that out loud! Did you know that staff/teacher appreciation is the first week of May? I hope the teachers will leave each day feeling so loved from little notes your children may write to them thanking them for a fabulous year. I know I personally can't wait to treat the special teachers who have guided, taught, mentored and loved my boys this year. On a final note, as this will be my last letter as President to Cambridge families this year, I would like to take this time to bid you farewell. It has been an honor and privilege to serve Cambridge families through PTA for the past six years. I have enjoyed all the moments I've spent getting to know you over the past years and all the new friends who've come into my life! What a blessing. I am so proud and excited to announce to you, the Cambridge Elementary PTA 2015-2016 Executive Board. They are as follows: Alice Montgomery, President Crystall McClain, Vice President of Programs Pamela Palmer, Vice President of Memberships Jana Hayes, Secretary As always, we encourage you to get active in PTA and enjoy the experience you will have as a PTA member.

Have a wonderful rest of the school year and fabulous summer vacation! Warm Wishes, Theresa Borntreger, PTA President tborntreger@gmail.com

May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month What is Skin Cancer? Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal skin cells. It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations, or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors.

Prevention Guidelines Since its inception in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher as one important part of a complete sun protection regimen. Sunscreen alone is not enough, however. Read our full list of skin cancer prevention tips and share them with your friends and family. •

Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.

Do not burn.

Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths.

Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.

Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating.

Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.

Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.

See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.

What You Need to Know! •

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually.

Each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon.

One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.

The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone practice monthly head-to-toe self- examination of their skin so that they can find any new or changing lesions that might be cancerous or precancerous. Skin cancers found and removed early are almost always curable. Learn about the warnings signs of skin cancer and what to look for during a self-examination. If you spot anything suspicious, see a doctor. Performed regularly, self-examination can alert you to changes in your skin and aid in the early detection of skin cancer. It should be done often enough to become a habit, but not so often as to feel like a bother. For most people, once months is ideal, but ask your doctor if you should do more frequent checks.

If you can spot it, you can stop it!
