George takes Pro Box title at Karapiro By Benjamin Watt
Cairo George made a triumphant return to a New Zealand ring last weekend after a 19-month absence. The Hamilton boxer scored a unanimous points win over James Torres to pick up the vacant Pro Box Pacific Super Lightweight title at the Sir Don Rowlands Event centre in Lake Karapiro. George, 28, had not fought in New Zealand since 2017 due to commitments with overseas
promoters and his previous outing was a second-round knockout win over Gusti Elnino in Australia late last year. Australia Torres carved out a successful kickboxing record before breaking a leg and retiring. He then returned to the ring as an amateur boxer before turning pro. His record dropped to two wins and four defeats with one draw. The main event of the evening wrapped up an outstanding night of boxing organised by Nigel Elliot.
Tokoroa based Quintin Myburgh, boxing with a prosthetic limb, Sam Hilbers.
Cairo was constantly the aggressor, landing good punches and showing good fitness. Torres was floored in the third round but showed he was game and had good defensive skills. Cairo, though, was always in command and allowed himself some showboating late on. One judge gave him all 10 rounds, the other two had it 9-1. Cairo told the audience postfight he would next fight in June at a Manny Pacquiao promoted event. His opponent is yet to be announced but it is confirmed that it will be for a major WBO regional title. The pro-corporate fight night was sold out, and among those present were heavyweight Alrie Meleisea, ranked 10 by the WBA, middleweight Gunnar Jackson and former Muay Thai world champion John Conway. The first pro event of the night featured two Waikato heavyweight women. Former national title challenger Ashley Campbell scored a majority win over New Zealand Amateur champion Dianne Beazley, who made her professional debut. The four round fight was entertaining, and both fighters were up for a rematch in the afterbout talks. Auckland’s Alex Va made short work of Taranaki heavyweight Graeme Dodd. after their man was knocked down midway through the first round. The corporate boxer spent 12 weeks training leading up to this event and their training showed. It was a stacked card with 16 corporate fights and one of note was Quintin Myburgh’s win over Sam Hilbers. Myburgh has a prosthetic leg and against an aggressive Hilbers
showed excellent defensive skills. He made Hilbers swing and miss regularly. Elliot announced after the event that he would return to the Sir Don Rowlands Event centre in August for small boxing show, copromoting with Dion McNaby. The fights on the night will be available on line at the Gladrap Channel on YouTube.
