JOSÉ IGNACIO HUALDE, ANTXON OLARREA, ANNA MARÍA ESCOBAR, CATHERINE E. TRAVIS, AND CRISTINA SANZ

This book is excellent in the way it shows students how to use theoretical and empirical arguments to adjudicate between different analyses of a certain construction or syntactic phenomenon. Its empirical coverage is vast and there is a level of detail and clarity in the presentation of the trees that I have not found in other textbooks. The workbook exercises are fantastic a great resource for both students and tutors.

INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION The constructed examples effectively illustrate the relevant concepts in a tailored, targeted way, and the attested examples provide useful supplementary evidence. And the bibliographic notes are impressive in their comprehensiveness, and will be a boon to motivated, inquisitive students eager to deepen their understanding of the concepts and phenomena under investigation. Erik Zyman, The University of Chicago Radford’s introductory textbooks are an institution in the field and this new book for advanced students is no exception. Its theoretical framework incorporates contemporary versions of Minimalist and Cartographic theory, and it provides a solid, detailed and accessible account of major current ideas in the field—along with some truly interesting original observations. Martha McGinnis, University of Victoria

Andrew Radford is Emeritus Professor at the University of Essex. He has written a number of popular textbooks, including Transformational Grammar (1988) and Minimalist Syntax (2004), and research monographs on Colloquial English (2018) and Relative Clauses (2019).

The Chinese University of Hong Kong

“Rings and Rasinger bring a novel and nuanced transcultural approach to intercultural communication, addressing limitations of contrastive, essentialist perspectives, as well as critical research. They combine up-to-date issues (digital and gig work, hyper-nationalistic trends, social media) and new approaches (positive psychology, storytelling, film and narrative) with world-wide examples, to deeply consider intercultural communication within larger power, business, and political relations.” Professor John Baldwin,

Uniquely interdisciplinary and accessible, The Cambridge Introduction to Intercultural Communication is the ideal text for undergraduate introductory courses in Intercultural Communication, International Communication and Cross-cultural Communication. Suitable for students and practitioners alike, it encompasses the breadth of intercultural communication as an academic field and a day-to-day experience in work and private life, including international business, public services, schools and universities. This textbook touches on a range of themes in intercultural communication, such as evolutionary and positive psychology, key concepts from critical intercultural communication, postcolonial studies and transculturality, intercultural encounters in contemporary literature and film, and the application of contemporary intercultural communication research for the development of health services and military services. The concise, up-to-date overviews of key topics are accompanied by a wide variety of tasks and eighteen case studies for in-depth discussions, homework, and assessments.

The Study of

Language

‘Just what everyone teaching Second Language Acquisition has been waiting for – a truly undergraduate textbook. It explains the terms regularly used by those in the field but not always understood by beginners. It is non-partisan in its approach, well organized, clearly laid-out and provides good, worked-through examples … it is the first truly ‘joined up’ work in the field!’ Vera Regan, University College Dublin

Eighth Edition

‘By structuring an SLA course around the main questions the field investigates, Saville-Troike focuses students’ attention on the important issues that illuminate the study of SLA. The adaptable nature of the book also makes it ideal for courses that include both undergraduate and graduating students, and for courses that have both students who intend to continue taking courses in SLA, and those who do not.’

MURIEL SAVILLE-TROIKE is Professor Emerita from the University of Arizona, named Regents’ Professor of English before her retirement. KAREN BARTO is a Content Developer and Lecturer at the Center for English as a Second Language at the University of Arizona.

‘… combines great clarity of exposition, a focus on the linguistics of second language acquisition, and an effort to integrate diverse theoretical perspectives into a complex understanding of second language acquisition as a whole – all in less than 300 pages. While billed as a textbook for undergraduates, this text could easily be used in graduate-level introductory courses in second language acquisition. The chapter-ending discussion questions and activities, as well as a handy glossary of terms, make this more than just a textbook, however: it provides many of the materials needed to design an introductory course in the subject.’

“I have used The Study of Language for thirteen years as a course book for students new to linguistics. It covers most fields comprehensively, but in an interesting and easily assimilated way. The eighth edition includes new content, but there have been notable improvements in the structure. Yule’s book remains my firm favorite as an introductory text.”
