The Women of Cambria

WOMEN HAVE PLAYED an integral role in the manufacturing industry for centuries by bringing their perseverance, innovation, and problem-solving abilities to the workplace. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, women were the driving force behind the textile industry and were critical contributors to the war efforts in both WWI and WWII, providing vital prowess and dedication to the manufacturing functions at stateside factories throughout the war years! Additionally, the women of both those wartime eras were critical to the advancement of the agricultural industries of the times. Over the years, women have continued to make significant contributions to manufacturing from operating machinery to making major contributions to agriculture industriousness, and really all critical aspects to the American work life.

Today, companies benefit enormously as women help create a robust and diverse workforce,

foster creativity, and boost productivity. Research finds that many women, our moms and sisters, share their detail-oriented, organized, and natural multitasking nature to the great benefit of the workplace. Women in the workplace also greatly enhance

desirable, team-building skills and are empathetic communicators and listeners.

It’s clear by the numbers that Cambria benefits from the many women we employ across all work functions throughout the company. Company-wide, women make up

In our modern world, a narrowed focus on certain types of success inadvertently overshadows one of the most prestigious and difficult to attain achievements for young people, the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) program.

Since its inception in 1911, only four percent of Scouts have earned this rank after a lengthy review process. The Eagle Scout rank has been earned by over 2.5 million youth. Children between the ages of 11 and 18 must climb seven scouting ranks, earn 21 merit badges, become a leader within

their troop, and complete an approved service project. Eagle Scouts exemplify virtues such as trustworthiness, loyalty, kindness, and bravery—traits most people would love to see more of in the world.

AS WE HAVE written about in so many ways over the years, Cambria’s employees are the most vital aspect of all that Cambria is as a company. Our vendor relationships, our customer partnerships and deep relations with the markets, the ingenuity we ascribe to each day, and the depth of our manufacturing expertise that result in Cambria’s market-leading products; all emanate from the daily work success of our Cambria employee teams. As our cover story shares, the diverse Cambria teams are often led by a talented workforce

of the Women at Cambria . It’s a wonderful reality at Cambria that our manufacturing operations are thriving with this diverse workforce of many women working throughout our entire production enterprise. Growing up in southern Minnesota, working myself in our family’s local cheese factory, we had upwards of 50 factory employees in the mid-1980s. During my time there, just one woman worked on the factory floor, Joyce Siegler. Joyce worked the shift opposite of her husband Augie, operating the same equipment. Joyce was an excellent

team member, and actually trained me on the whey evaporator equipment as my shift lead. Joyce would be most proud today that our Cambria’s manufacturing workforce is now fully immersed with women throughout the critical areas of manufacturing. In addition, women at Cambria are instrumental members of our service, administrative, sales, and marketing teams, and, moreover, vital members of our excellent management and leadership teams.

IN ISSUE 3, the Cambria Post published a historical timeline featuring the construction and expansions of Cambria’s Slab Manufacturing Facility in Le Sueur, MN. Since then, we’ve made even more history! This past spring, the newest production line began producing highly innovative designs. The highest standards in advanced technology is incorporated into this state-of-the-art production line that provides additional capabilities to develop even more innovative products like super jumbo slabs as well as the most beautifully disruptive designs in the industry.

Chief Research Officer Jon Grzeskowiak says, “We planned for what was coming and we didn’t miss a beat. Plus, what we gained from this investment is flexibility, and efficiency, that allow us to work better, faster, and smarter.”

Chief Manufacturing Operations Officer Brian Scoggin adds, “Everything we’ve done to get to where we are today, is a result of long-term thinking. And these successes are strongly felt on a human level fueling high morale.” ✦

Q&A with Sara Lissick, Chief Financial Officer

Sara Lissick shares insight on her career path, what it means to be on the executive team at Cambria, as well as some fun trivia tidbits.

Q: Talk about your career trajectory as a female in finance.

A: I was fortunate to have great female mentors as I was coming up in the finance function. I always approached my roles with hard work and a positive outlook, and I took any obstacle as a challenge to overcome.

CoNversations with our colleagues | CRAIG EITER

Cambria’s entrepreneurial spirit is embodied in innovation that includes not only our beautiful designs but also our business processes. Because, according to Craig Eiter, EVP of Sales Operations, better processes yield better outcomes for everyone. We asked him to tell us more about that.

Q: Share a peek into your role and who/ what you manage at Cambria.

A: I lead Sales Operations which consists of 100 people across four teams within multiple facets of the business. Those teams include Business Partner Services (BPS), Cambria Customer Care (CCC), Sales Operations, and the Academy at Cambria TM At the end of the day, whether it’s through automating functions, managing claims, providing reporting, or hosting trainings, all of us strive to make the job of a sales professional easier.

Q: What’s new in Sales Operations?

A: Every day is new. A recent success was redesigning the workflow to provide built-in displays. These displays are where customers can lean their elbows on our slab, which we believe helps sales. We also helped redesign deployment of marketing slabs across the country so they are delivered as quickly as possible. One marketing

slab could sell 100 slabs. So, we wanted to make sure our assets are deployed in an efficient way.

Q: How do you encourage and foster collaboration?

A: My philosophy is that anything of significance requires multiple teams and people to get accomplished properly. We are a service center and we try to be servants of our customers. We must also be good stewards of our resources. So, I encourage people to make sure we spend our time on things that are most valuable, as defined by sales.

Q: How do you help fuel employee success?

A: A mantra I try to live by, coach, and teach is that every employee needs two things: to be challenged and rewarded. If I keep my team challenged, they are engaged and feel successful. Examples of rewards people appreciate are to feel positively motivated, respected, encouraged to think, and allowed to disagree. What distinguishes Cambria to be an employer of choice is passion. When you talk to people who’ve been here a while, it’s passion for the customer, the product, and being continuously better. ✦

Q: What excited you most about joining the executive team at Cambria?

A: Many things! I love the brand and its amazing designs. The company is well respected in the community. Also, I thought my background and broad experience would be a great fit for the role. Most importantly, the great people here.

Q: We’ve been hearing a lot about intentional leadership at Cambria. What does that mean for you and your team?

A: We have a fast-paced, entrepreneurial culture that has served us well and there are so many more growth opportunities to pursue. For 2023, we’ve been talking about intentional work: focus on top priorities, identify and fix root causes that create extra work, escalate ad hoc requests, be disciplined in planning and executing work, and communicate roadblocks and improvement ideas. This will allow employees to achieve more of their goals, feel fulfilled in their work, and add more value for Cambria. Win-win!

Q: What can’t you leave home without?

A: Snacks! You never know when you’ll get hungry.

Q: What’s a guilty pleasure TV show?

A: The Crown. Since we don’t have anything like a royal family in the U.S., it’s fascinating to learn about their lives. But I don’t think I’d want that kind of attention.

Q: What are you looking forward to this summer?

A: We go up north every July 4th weekend. My kids (ages 17 and 19) still love the traditions of fireworks and grilling out.

Q: What do you enjoy doing on weekends?

A: I take my daughter Elena to get coffee at Starbucks on Saturday mornings, and our dog Kobe comes along to get his “pup cup.” I also enjoy watching movies at home with my husband Tony. Hmm … is doing laundry enjoyable? ✦

aspects of family, and as the family’s most celebrated caretaker in the nurturing paradigms of family life.

Even so, over 30 percent of Cambria operations—106 women at the Slab Manufacturing Facility, with over 60 percent of our sales field, and 50 percent of our corporate service employees are female. Cambria’s relentless pursuit of innovation has led to the adoption of technological advancements in engineering and manufacturing— and many of those critical roles are so aptly being filled by women.

For Quality Control Lead Rachel Braun, her background in the medical field helped refine her skill for detecting when something is off. “I discovered I don’t have the stomach for nursing,” says Braun. “But I’m really good at details and investigating product imperfections. I’m also a mom, so I’m used to being flexible and shifting gears when necessary.” As a mom, Braun appreciates Cambria’s block scheduling at the Slab Manufacturing Facility. She says, “I get to have full-day adventures with my son on weekdays when places we want to visit are open and less crowded.”

Lisa Martinez values Cambria’s support of her “main job” as a parent too. She’s on the Slab Manufacturing Facility’s custodial and maintenance team and says, “When my kids are sick, I’m told my kids should come first and I’m always asked how I’m doing.” That understanding and acceptance at Cambria go beyond employees’ family obligations. Martinez says, “People here don’t separate into racial groups. No matter what race you are, everyone is accepted.”

Senior Market Representative Jennifer Prins’ role in sales is characterized by daily interactions with

fabricators, home builders, remodelers, kitchen and bath designers, pretty much any potential buyer of Cambria, many of whom work in mostly male-dominated industries. But Prins says, “All that matters is that I walk in with knowledge my customers need, or a willingness to learn. It makes my day when a customer calls me for a solution and then says, ‘I knew you’d be there for me.’ That’s the kind of thing that sets Cambria apart.”

Laura Lott, a Market Representative in Texas is expecting her first baby this summer. She says, “Cambria has given me the resources to achieve my goals, and the flexibility, support, and understanding a woman needs to feel confident about my ability to be successful as a new mom.” At Cambria, working Moms like Laura, raising kids with hardworking husbands alike, abound and flourish throughout Cambria.

Women of today in America successfully balance their career with family life like never before, leveraging both aspects of their lives for personal growth, family joy, and career fulfillment. And the women of Cambria are supported and encouraged to bring those unique experiences and skills to drive the company forward in so many ways.

Recent statistics indicate a job market shifting back toward women over these recent years—with kids back in school and “normalcy” returning to family life. Women’s ability to work and partner in leading families as grandma, mom, sister, wife, is a testament to their strength, knowledge, and passion and in doing so they remain unique and vital contributors in shaping the future of US manufacturing and the industriousness of American business in the 21st century. Increases of

women in the American workforce has been a critical factor to ensuring a healthier economy, more diversity in industry, and ultimately a stronger America. Cambria is proud to participate in what has become the most diverse and productive workforce in the world, as the “good old USA” continues to thrive and flourish, largely

I started at Cambria as a college intern over 17 years ago, and now I run the warehouse pre-nesting and programming. Nesting involves using pictures of slabs and kind of ‘playing Tetris’ with different layouts to find the best ‘match’ of veining and color. Programming is where we check all the jobs that come in from Cambria Installer Associates (CIAs) and then set the programming on our machines to cut. I went to school for architectural drafting, so I enjoy most of my work—especially the drawing part and seeing the end results.

Over my 22 years at Cambria, I’ve been fortunate enough to work in every department at the plant and the fabshop. I started at the plant working with the construction crew to set all of the machines. Now, as a FabShop Programming Operator, I start every day early to review the daily production log and begin programming our machinery for upcoming jobs. Sometimes, we get technical jobs that take a team of us to think through. That’s always enjoyable, when we all get together to figure out the best way to accomplish something.

There are four areas I look after at the front of the shop: warehouse, pre-inspection, nesting, and rough cut. That means making sure job layouts are good and without imperfections, maximizing the utilization of slabs, ensuring operations and machine functionality are up to par, and making sure the warehouse inventory and invoices are all up to date. I’ve been here for seven years and I love working here. The quality-focused team that we have built is phenomenal. It’s that healthy team environment that I love.

Weathering Any Storm

WHEN HURRICANE IAN HEADED TOWARD FLORIDA, CAMBRIA EMPLOYEES WORKED IN SUPPORT OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY AND PARTNERS.

When Hurricane Ian, a monster of a storm, was headed toward Florida this past September, Florida-based Cambria leaders were highly focused on safety of their employees and partners. This Category 4 storm was surely an unnerving experience for everyone in the region—but with the collaborative leadership of Cambria’s Operations and Sales Team on the ground in Florida and the CambriaCares* team in the Eden Prairie, MN, office, our employees showed how strong we can be when we work together.

Sales and Distribution Center (SDC) Manager Angel Fagundo has lived in Florida for over 30 years and has experienced the unpredictability of hurricanes. He’s known as the “weatherman” at the Fort Lauderdale SDC as he frequently checks the National Hurricane Weather Center when storms are brewing. Fagundo’s team held meetings each morning leading up to the storm to connect with SDC employees and local drivers, and Fagundo updated employees on the potential SDC closure date and when it would likely reopen. This information and other safety protocols were also sent via email to every Cambria employee in Florida.

Fortunately, Hurricane Ian missed Fagundo’s team by 20 miles. Nevertheless, he sent wellness check emails after the storm to make sure his team had power and felt safe in their homes, as well as gauging their comfort level with returning to work.

Cambria’s business partners are as much like family as our employees. So, in the storm’s aftermath, District Sales Manager Andy Gonzalez stepped in with a plan to assist them. Gonzalez participated in leadership calls with Regional Vice President of Sales Brad Houchen, who suggested reaching out to the Minnesota-based CambriaCares team for ideas around additional support—a cascade of communication that prompted a rally of action.

Houchen and Gonzalez were astonished at how quickly the corporate office reacted in support of South Florida. Based on the urgency of the situation, the CambriaCares team quickly determined the needs of those impacted, ordered supplies, and had them all delivered to the

Miami SDC the very next morning. The team sent nonperishable food packages such as canned vegetables, microwavable meals, and cereal to Florida to supplement local donations organized by Gonzalez. CambriaCares also shipped baby items including diapers, formula, and wipes, and dozens of safety/ emergency supply items like flashlights, batteries, emergency candles, and more.

To coordinate and disperse these donations to various partners, Gonzalez worked with local Market Representative Chelsey Shelton and Sales Support Coordinator Mauro Castillejos. With the help of truck driver Matthew Melendez, these resourceful dragons secured a central pickup spot for distributing items to trade partners in need. One recipient, Madelyn Rossler from Lee Building Industry Association, expressed her gratitude saying, “Andy reached out to me on a Monday, and by Wednesday,

donations were already arriving at our warehouse. Not only that, Andy was on-site helping to unload the truck. We cannot thank Cambria enough for the support during that difficult time and helping a

the support mechanism Cambria’s team in South Florida has in place— for one another and for its business partners—and also the desire of employees from across the country to pitch in and help out. Gonzalez says, “As leaders, we need to utilize the CambriaCares team and not be afraid to pick up the phone and ask how they can help.”

CambriaCares Senior Specialist Jordan Riemer says, “I’m so lucky to come to work and know that there are opportunities to make a difference, even from 1,500 miles away. It was awesome to see how quickly the Florida team jumped in to meet the needs of their community and to see the impact Cambria can make when we come together is incredibly rewarding.”

Hurricane Ian was a disaster for many and rebuilding will take time for those who suffered losses in the region. But, it also shined a light on

CAMBRIA AT KBIS

Cambria’s interactive experience at the 2023 Kitchen and Bath Industry Show (KBIS) our largest in 20 years was truly a team effort. Over a year of planning, months of fabrication, and six days of construction and installation resulted in an astonishing booth structure with 38 fabricated designs in various applications throughout the space.

1 / Programming Supervisor Donovan Cedergren and Technical Services Representative Kevin Best figured out how to bring the planned concepts to life, including this reception desk made with Cambria Everleigh™.

2 / Plant Manager Josh Haecherl led the Minnesota FabShop team with fabrication and assembly. Also from Minnesota, Craig Tolzman, Cory Eccles, Skip Thomas, Jeff Volk, Jon Watts, Tim Altenhofen, Andrew Skelly, and Fred Richardson helped with the installation effort.

Eagle Spotting

There are Eagle Scouts among us at Cambria, impressive people, right under our noses, whose teenage accomplishments were so challenging as to be extremely rare.

At Cambria, Machine Operator Ben Wilson is an Eagle Scout. His father and uncle are also Eagle Scouts. Wilson grew up in Le Sueur, MN and his love of the outdoors and camping is what initially attracted him to scouting. But then he

discovered scouting taught him all kinds of skills he plans to teach his own kids— skills he didn’t think were unique until he began meeting people in adulthood who couldn’t tie knots. “Nowadays, fewer people seem to have an appreciation for the outdoors,” says Wilson. Scouting opens up that world to young people.

Senior Operations Data Analyst Steven Cross is also an Eagle Scout. So are his brother and

father! Cross says, “Scouting provided me with experiences you just don’t get in everyday life, school, or sports. Experiences in the outdoors, like how to tie a lashing or build an entryway, and how to perform life saving activities on land and in water.

It’s all about teamwork and working toward common goals.” Steven and his wife Mollie Cross, who also works at Cambria as an Executive Assistant in the Engineering

department, share an appreciation for the value of scouting. Their son participates and she volunteers as committee chair.

And for those daughters and sisters of today who crave a chance to embrace this challenge, the BSA opened its organization in 2019 to girls and young women. Since then, over 1000 females have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout! ✦

CAMBRIA PARTNERSHIPS

Pursuing Excellence in Ohio

COLLABORATION LEADS TO TREMENDOUS GROWTH FOR CAMBRIA INSTALLER ASSOCIATE MIDWEST QUARTZ.

Columbus, Ohio, is booming. Home to several well-known company headquarters, it’s one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country, and the fastest in the Midwest. It’s also where Cambria Installer Associate (CIA) Midwest Quartz has seen tremendous growth since opening its doors in 2020.

Owned by Marc and Annie Konkus, Midwest Quartz is the couple’s second business venture. The first is Konkus Marble & Granite, which Marc Konkus started in 1997 in a small warehouse with some stone-cutting equipment he saved up to buy.

“I first started with a local company in the stone industry in 1993,” says Konkus. “I left college to work there, and after a couple of years, my parents

wondered what I was going to do. I thought I should go back to school, but I also always thought I could start my own shop.” He returned to college for one more quarter. But the draw of being a business owner proved too compelling for Konkus.

His stone fabrication and installation business grew and the company landed work for a big box home improvement store. Sometime around 2008, the ever-evolving marketplace led to that particular relationship winding down. But, with change comes opportunity, and in this case, a shift toward what would become an even brighter future.

Konkus had also been working with quartz and was familiar with Cambria’s high-quality product and reputation. His good business instincts prompted him to reach out and explore potential growth opportunities. He

says, “We met with some folks from Cambria and determined we were a good fit with each other.” That turned out to be the right call as it didn’t take long for the quartz side of Konkus’ business to ramp up. Over time, Konkus focused more and more on working with Cambria quartz specifically. And, since Cambria is known in the marketplace for having high standards and preferring to partner with industry bests like Konkus, he chose to pursue a partnership with Cambria. “We went through The Academy at CambriaTM and started marketing and getting more brand recognition,” says Konkus.

Fast forward to 2018 and Cambria can be found in so many amazing projects in Ohio including luxury suites at Nationwide Arena and the Jerome Schottenstein Center. Cambria District Sales Manager Nathan Shimp notes, “Marc has been a good partner for years and they were always doing a good job with quality and have a great reputation in the area. He takes care of his customers and his people. But it’s hard to be good at multiple things that require different processes. So discussions began around the idea of Marc opening a separate Cambria installation business.”

After 20 years of success in the industry, the business Konkus started in a small warehouse as a college kid became one of the biggest stone fabricators in Central Ohio in its own right. But Konkus believed excellence in quartz installation would

indeed come from opening a separate quartz installation business. And since both Konkus and Cambria are ever in pursuit of excellence, Konkus shifted some key installers, salespeople, templaters, and operations staff to a separate location and opened a full-service showroom with an extensive display of Cambria. Midwest Quartz was born.

Now this was mere months before the economy would be struck by an unforeseen worldwide pandemic. But Konkus is no stranger to confidently moving toward his goals and even in the face of those challenging times, business at Midwest Quartz took off!

Today, Midwest Quartz has grown to 20 employees, including Marc and Andrea’s teenage children, who pitch in as part-time workers at their family business—one that’s become locally known for its solid relationships and reputation. Combine Midwest Quartz’ Cambriafocused crew with Cambria’s expertise and ongoing support, and sales volume, as well as customer satisfaction, have gone through the roof.

Columbus may be one of the country’s hotbeds of new construction and population growth, but Shimp says, “I think the main reason Midwest Quartz is so successful is the caliber of people there. It’s a small but experienced and capable team—some of the best installers in the business.” ✦

CAMBRIA STYLE COOKS

SUNNY SIDE UP

BRUNCH JUST GOT BETTER. ENJOY

STYLE

Fried Egg Sandwich

Serves 2

INGREDIENTS

• 2 ciabatta rolls

• 1½ cups frisée, torn into bite-size pieces (about 2 ounces)

1 bacon slice, preferably thick-cut, cut into ¼-inch wide lardons

• 1 Tbsp. minced shallot (from 1 small)

• 4 tsp. red wine vinegar

• 1 tsp. smooth Dijon mustard

• Salt and freshly ground black pepper

• ¼ cup crumbled blue cheese, or other sharp, crumbly cheese

1 to 2 tsp. unsalted butter, divided

2 large eggs

DIRECTIONS

Split your rolls and put them into a toaster. Place the frisée in a medium bowl.

In a small heavy skillet, cook the bacon over moderate heat until crisp. With a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to paper towels, reserving the bacon fat in the skillet. Add the shallot and cook for 1 minute, stirring.

Add the red wine vinegar and let it hiss and bubble for 20 to 30 seconds, then remove the skillet from the heat and whisk in the Dijon. Immediately pour the hot dressing over the frisée and toss with the bacon, salt, and pepper. Heap a generous amount of salad between each toasted ciabatta bottom. Top each salad pile with 2 tablespoons of blue cheese.

Reheat the skillet over medium-high heat. Add some butter and swirl it to coat the pan. Crack 1 egg into the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and reduce the heat to medium. Cover with a small lid to help the egg cook quickly and evenly. In one minute, you should have a perfect sunnyside-up egg. To keep the egg from running off the sandwich, flip the egg and cook for 20 to 30 seconds. Top the bacon-frisée salad with the egg.

Avocado Toast

Serves 2

INGREDIENTS

• 4 eggs

• 4 slices whole-grain bread, toasted

• 1 avocado, peeled and mashed

• 1 tsp. each white chia seeds, sesame seeds, and cumin seeds

Freshly ground sea salt and black pepper

• Optional toppings: fresh lime wedges, baby mint sprigs for garnish, and bacon

Quinoa Oatmeal

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

• 4 cups water

• ½ cup scarlet or other quinoa

• 1 tsp. olive or coconut oil

• 1 cup steel-cut oats

• ½ cup almond or other milk

DIRECTIONS

Place the eggs in a saucepan of boiling water and cook for 7 minutes. While the eggs are cooking, combine chia seeds, sesame seeds, cumin seeds, and salt and pepper in a small bowl and set aside. Place 2 slices of toast on each plate and top with avocado. When the eggs are finished cooking, drain and refresh under cold water. Peel and slice the eggs in half and place on the toast. Sprinkle the seed mixture over the toast, and add your choice of optional toppings. Recipe adapted from Donna Hay.

DIRECTIONS

Bring the water to a near-boil in a kettle or in a microwave. Place the quinoa in a heat-proof bowl and pour the water over it and set aside. In a medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat and add the oats. Stir and cook for 1–2 minutes until lightly toasted. Add the quinoa-water mixture and bring it back to a boil. Turn down the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes until chewy, but not hard. Add the milk and turn off the heat. Serve with additional milk, fresh fruit, maple syrup, brown sugar, raisins, or nuts. For fast, easy breakfasts, double the recipe and heat up the leftovers. This recipe was adapted from Thug Kitchen.
