The king falls to his knees, his kingdom in turmoil, his queen torn from his side. Exiled from a land consumed by the flames of betrayal he and his sons journey into a beautiful but forbidding landscape. And therein lies the kingdom’s chance for redemption, tied to the fate of the king’s youngest son, Camber…
When you have an exceptional brand, it’s only fitting to tell your brand story in an exceptional way. The feature film Legend of Cambria, which tells the mythical story of Camber, founder of Wales, was conceived to do just that.
“The beauty and craftsmanship of Cambria is inspired by the rich, landscape of Wales and the entire Celtic region. Through this film, we knew we could bring that connection to life—and evoke some mystery and intrigue around the brand,” says Carol Olson, Chief Marketing Officer.
The challenge? To tell a gorgeous and riveting brand story that would enthrall viewers, without departing from the brand ethos. “We wanted to infuse the entire film with the attributes that we also focus on as a company—quality, passion,
craftsmanship, the strength of character to make it through adversity—from the story to the production value,” says Shelly Nelson, who was VP of Marketing (and on set during filming) and is now SVP
of Sales. “The last piece was that it had to be unique. This is Cambria’s story, and it’s special, and memorable. Our goal was to leave customers curious to learn more about Cambria after watching the film.”

EVEN THOUGH I grew up in northern Minnesota, I’ve never been one to say that I LOVE winter. But, I have to admit, there’s something pretty magical about it. After all, it’s a great excuse to snuggle up on the sofa with my kids and our dog, and look out the window at the snow falling. Reflecting back on the past year, one goal I had for myself was to slow down and appreciate the simple moments. Whether that be movies and puzzles together or my absolute favorite—all day Sunday dinners. I truly believe the smallest moments, the quiet ones are the foundation of happiness and lasting memories.

Prior to being named SVP, Sales Management, Shelly Nelson, team leader for the Legend of Cambria film, was VP, Marketing for many years.
The shift in roles from VP of Marketing to SVP of Sales was a natural one for Shelly Nelson. And when we chatted with her for this issue of The Cambria Post , it was quickly apparent she has a passion for both.
Q: When you were VP of Marketing you led the creation of Legend of Cambria. Tell us your favorite behind-the-scenes moment.
A: My favorite behind-the-scenes moment was the day we put the stunt woman up on the waterfall for the scenes where Camber first meets the water nymph, and his future queen,
Aeres. We had an enormous crane and a stunt woman in a wetsuit (it may look sunny but it was only 50 degrees) suspended from the crane in the rushing waterfall for about two hours. Watching the craftsmen and women on set bring this together across an entire day was truly amazing.
Q: You have been in roles in two completely different departments. What advice would you give to someone who is interested in another role in the company?
A: Get to know people in other areas and learn about what they do! It will help you in your current job to give you a wider perspective and it might help you to find your next position. I couldn’t have been successful in Marketing without getting to know the Sales team and their side of the business over the years, and ultimately it’s what led me to my new role— which I love. ✦
Q: You’ve had a fascinating career building teams for an array of large and complex companies. What was it about Cambria for you?
A: I’ve always admired Cambria from afar (aside from being fortunate to have this amazing product in my house), but once I learned more about it during the recruiting process I only became more excited. It was clear that this was a unique opportunity to join a successful and growing company in a role that was perfectly positioned to create an impact on an organization full of incredible talent.
Q: You obviously love to lead teams and work in the trenches with your colleagues. What’s your philosophy on leadership?
A: What drives me is the opportunity to see people and businesses have success after we work together. Some of my biggest influences have been those who pushed and challenged me along the way, including sports coaches, all of whom took risks to get me out of my comfort zone and accomplish things I didn’t initially think were possible. This has definitely impacted my own leadership style and belief in coaching and empowering people to continuously grow and realize their potential. My overall leadership style is business-oriented, open, candid, and informal. While I take my work seriously and will push myself and those around me to perform at our best, I firmly believe that we don’t need to take ourselves too seriously along the way and can still try to have fun and see the lighter side of things. If there’s an issue, I provide honest feedback, focus on the solution, and work to eliminate any barriers to accomplishing our goals.
Q: You love Cambria and being part of the team—what are some of the details you’re excited to dig into?
A: For me, the big pillars of impact are in the areas of talent, capabilities, and culture. I’m eager to continue to develop the right tools and processes to focus on driving performance in support of the organization of the future. This includes doing whatever we can to enhance Cambria’s position as the top destination for talent within our industry and in the markets where we operate. ✦

BY MELINDA NELSON Inspired by a 12th-century legend, imbued with folklore, and shot on location in rugged Celtic landscapes that serve as inspiration for our designs, Legend of Cambria brings Cambria’s rich heritage to life in a breathtaking
feature film. The epic story of a kingdom torn apart by greed and deception and reunited by a dynamic young king, Legend of Cambria offers an irresistible invitation to discover the timeless natural beauty and quality of our brand. ✦
✤ KING BRUTUS
A descendant of Trojan hero Aeneas, Brutus is the first king of Galloway. Sadly, his hubris prevents him from recognizing the evil that’s destroying his kingdom.
✤ QUEEN ANEIRA
Devoted wife of Brutus and proud mother of Albanactus, Locrinus, and Camber, this quietly powerful matriarch is intelligent, graceful, and unafraid to wield a sword.
✤ ALBANACTUS
RULED BY KING BRUTUS AND QUEEN ANEIRA , the kingdom of Galloway is under siege. Ruger, the barbarian warrior, has attacked the castle and killed the queen. Abandoning their beloved ancestral home which has been destroyed by fire, Brutus and his three sons flee on foot.
BRUTUS CONTINUES TO ROAM Brittanicca in search of Camber while Albanactus and Locrinus do their best to dissuade him from his quest. Camber and Aeres wander into a cave where they awaken Ddraig Goch, a red dragon that’s been entombed for centuries. Breathing fire, the dragon creates a powerful force field around Camber, Aeres, and himself, allowing the kingdom of Cambria to burst into flower.
EVIL WARRIOR RUGER
IS PLOTTING to kidnap the son of King Camber and Queen Aeres. Ruger captures the boy in the woods and brings him to the castle to demand a ransom. When Brutus comes out to meet Ruger, a fight ensues and Ruger slays Brutus.
AS THE MEN ROAM BRITTANICCA , they spot a white horse in the trees near a lake. When Albanactus and Locrinus try to capture the animal, rock giants emerge from the earth. Camber’s pure heart enables him to vanquish the brutish beasts and rescue the horse, which is revealed to be a kelpie. Wandering through the forest, Camber comes upon a waterfall where he spots a lovely water nymph who he discovers is Aeres, Lady of the Falls.
The dutiful oldest son, Albanactus is an avid hunter and skilled marksman. While he patiently awaits his ascendancy to the throne, he’s unaware that fate may have other plans.
✤ LOCRINUS
The second son and middle child, Locrinus is competitive to a fault and fiercely jealous of his older brother who stands to inherit the kingdom.
✤ CAMBER
The youngest of the three boys, Camber is a dreamer, poet, and his father’s favorite. As the legend unfolds, he must battle the forces of fate and evil to become a fearless warrior and leader of his own kingdom.
✤ RUGER
Deeply scarred and mercilessly cruel, Ruger is a barbarian with a relentless need to conquer, an unquenchable thirst for battle, and a killer who takes delight in the suffering of others.
BRUTUS AWAKES AND SEES a blue flower, his late wife’s favorite. Recognizing it as a sign that Camber is still alive, he wakes his two sons and they resume their quest. When they reach the kingdom of Cambria, King Camber meets the weary travelers and recognizes them as his long-lost father and brothers and invites them to live with him and his wife Queen Aeres and their young son.
✤ BLOUDWEDDE
After serving as a trusted confidant of Brutus and his family, Ruger’s well-educated but conniving sidekick turns traitor, breaching their trust and setting the stage for the downfall of Galloway.
✤ AERES
Daughter of the King of the Water Spirits, this beautiful water nymph is the Lady of the Falls, charged with protecting the magical waters of Brittanicca from intruders. Her passion for Camber will force her to choose between the life of a goddess and that of a mortal.
✤ DDRAIG GOCH
When Camber frees this legendary dragon from rocks that entombed it in slumber for thousands of years, it magically turns from red to gold and befriends Camber as repayment for his selfless good deed.
The battle between good and evil continues, but we won’t spoil the ending!

Camber struggles to find strength deep within himself. Reborn at last, and one with the spirits of water, earth, and fire, he reunites with his family to restore his kingdom with one last battle…
Every frame of Legend of Cambria shows Cambria’s ongoing commitment to excellence,
to update his kitchen with new cabinets, new appliances, and new countertops. “Everyone has dreams for what they want to put in their home,” Omar says. “My dream was to have Cambria for my countertops. I work here and I know the quality is very good. The product is very strong, it shines, and it’s guaranteed.”
Omar chose Cambria Darlington for his countertops, which contrast beautifully with his glossy black cabinets. “I love this design. It’s my favorite,” he says. Omar enlisted his friend and Cambria colleague, Álvaro Hernández, to help with the construction. They did the work on their days off and a team from

Twenty years ago it was but a simple lunch, at the Champps sports bistro in St. Paul, Minnesota. Marty Davis, Jeff Hovanec, Kellie Akins and Bruce Akins, the then owner/operator of Innovative Surfaces, sat down over a sandwich in what was Davis’s effort to persuade Akins to commit his company to an exclusive relationship with Cambria’s new quartz surfaces company. Hovanec, Cambria’s first Director of Sales, identified Akins as a key player in the business early in his new career at Cambria.
The move would be monumental for Akins and came with great risk. At the time, Innovative Surfaces’s main source of revenue came from selling competing brands, including one with its own line of quartz. Akins relied on those sales for his company’s stability. Resisting the pressure to sell that line and instead choosing Cambria as his quartz supplier could compromise Akins’s position with his other brands. Cambria was new and unknown, Davis was unproven in this industry—a cheesemaker with his dad’s company—what did he know about countertops?
Akins studied the situation, pained over it, and ultimately Bruce and his team selected Cambria as their quartz partner.
“I trusted the Midwest guys, we had a lot in common,” Akins recalls. “Hovanec really stayed on me, and then Marty took me to Saskatchewan, Canada, specklebelly goose hunting with his grandpa Stanley and dad Mark. That put me over the top. They were just great people who I knew we could trust.”
It was a seminal moment in Cambria’s history, as many other operations like Akins’s soon followed his lead, and Cambria more quickly expanded its reach nationally. “It was a bold, bold move by Bruce and his team. They believed in us, trusted us, they took a big chance on us, and we developed a tremendous partnership, working very closely together to expand our businesses.”
Davis said, “Todd and Kellie, their entire management team, they were all a big part of those decisions way back when, and have further expanded our partnership to even greater heights today.” Innovative Surfaces has been a real industry leader on many levels, growing their business both regionally and nationally. “People would say to me, no one’s ever heard of Cambria,” said Akins, “and I would say, oh don’t worry, you will!”
Todd Akins, Bruce’s son and COO of the Hastings, Minnesota-based company, was well aware of the opportunity and remembers it well. “My dad already had a great working relationship with Davis and Hovanec as an installer of other brands, so even though it was a leap of faith, the trust was there,” he says. “That initial lunch led to hundreds of meetings in rapid succession, with both companies true labor of love, not to mention blood, sweat, and tears,” notes Kellie Akins, President/CEO of Innovative Surfaces. “When my father-in-law made the decision to partner with Cambria, it was not popular with some of our other brands, so it definitely created some

dark days. But, it also created bright days of excitement and opportunity for our company.”
“Like Cambria, we’re a family-owned company based in a small Minnesota town,” says Todd. “We share similar core values, which became the key cornerstones of our partnership. More than trendy buzzwords, these values of compassion, continuous improvement, innovation, and collaboration are deeply embedded in our DNA. They’re who we are and what we do every day.”
“As second-generation owners, Todd and I are proud to carry on his family’s business,” says Kellie. “His parents complemented each other beautifully. Bruce is an amazingly humble, unassuming guy who appreciates being with people he likes, and Sherry, who passed away, was a spicy spitfire with wonderful energy. She was a teacher, so everyone in town knew and loved her.”
When the Innovative Surfaces team installed their first kitchen with Cambria countertops in 2001, Bruce sent a check directly to Davis with a note that said, “Our first job down, one million to go.” Among the many residential and commercial collaborations that ensued over the next two decades, Innovative Surfaces installed Cambria at Target Center, Huntington Bank Stadium (formerly TCF Bank Stadium) at the University of Minnesota, the Hotel Ivy, and other high-profile Minneapolis venues. When the NFL tapped Minneapolis to host Super Bowl LII, Cambria and Innovative Surfaces spent nearly two years creating breathtaking custom Cambria installations throughout U.S. Bank Stadium, the dazzling new home of the Minnesota Vikings.
“As Cambria has grown, so has Innovative Surfaces,” says Kellie. “The tandem growth of our partnership has been truly astonishing. Our businesses are deeply aligned with a focus on the greater good, so we’re always learning from the immediate experience, safeguarding what we created together, and pushing the boundaries while keeping an eye on the end goal.”
“Our success is ultimately the result of our shared focus on the customer,” says Todd. “Our teams are deeply passionate about making our customers feel heard, comfortable, and secure as we bring their dreams to life. Whether we’re working with Cambria on a kitchen for a neighbor in Hastings, or a marquee installation in a world-class stadium in Minneapolis, we always give our customers more than what they envisioned with white-glove service, perfect edge quality, and spot-on seams. Our family never loses sight of the fact that Cambria and Innovative Surfaces create places where people gather together, celebrate, and make memories. That’s what fills our hearts with joy.”
“The Akins family are examples, in all ways, of the American dream, resulting from hard work and dedication and born of a tremendous family business that was always committed to their family, to their employees, to their supplier partners, and to their customers,” Davis says. “We’ve learned a lot from each other. It’s been a great ride!” ✦

Adapted from Ina Garten and the Food Network
Makes 20–40 marshmallows
INGREDIENTS
3 envelopes unflavored gelatin
1 ½ c. granulated white sugar
1 c. light corn syrup
¼ tsp salt
1 T. pure vanilla extract
Powdered sugar for dusting the pan and finishing the marshmallows.
DIRECTIONS
1 Using a small sieve or strainer, dust the inside of an 8 " x 12" glass baking dish with powdered sugar and set aside.
2 Put the gelatin and ½ cup of cold water in the bowl of an electric stand mixer with the whisk attachment and let it set while you make the syrup.
3 Mix sugar, corn syrup, salt, and ½ cup of water in a small saucepan and cook over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved. Increase the heat to high and cook until the syrup reaches 240 degrees on a candy thermometer. Remove pan from heat.
4 Turn on the mixer to low speed and slowly pour the hot syrup into the gelatin mixture. Turn the speed to high and whip until mixture is very thick, about 15 minutes. Add vanilla and mix thoroughly.
5 Pour the marshmallow mixture into the pan, smooth the top, and dust with more powdered sugar. Set aside uncovered overnight until the mixture dries out.
6 Cover a cutting board with wax paper and turn the marshmallows onto the wax paper. Cut into squares and dust the sides with more powdered sugar, if desired.
* EDITOR’S TIP: Make an extra batch of marshmallows and package them in cellophane bags as a gift for loved ones!

Q: My hands often shake when I click the shutter button, so my photos get blurry. Any advice?
A: Try using the volume button instead of the shutter button for more stability!

Q: I tried that, but my photos still look a little fuzzy.
A: Have you tried cleaning your camera lenses? It’s so simple, but so important, since phone cameras don’t have lens protectors, so they get dirty easily. Use a microfiber cloth or a soft fabric (no spray!) to gently clean your lenses.
Q: I find it hard to center my photos. How can I make them look more professional?
A: Your camera has built-in grid lines to help you level the horizon and follow the allimportant rule of thirds. To turn them on, go to Settings > Camera and toggle “Grid” to “On” (Green). Now, when you open your camera, you should see the grid on your frame.
Q: How do I include more of the image in my photos without backing way up?
A: I love using the wide-angle lens, a new addition to the iPhone. Just open your camera and click the “.5” on your screen and—Ta dah!— you’re in business!
