Summer skincare

With the summer season here, there are some things to consider including in your skincare routine. Here’s what the experts recommend.

With the mercury on the rise, now is the time to start implementing your summer skincare routine.

If you’ve never thought about changing your skincare regimen depending on the season, it’s important to start.

“Adjusting your skincare with the seasons is crucial, as your skin’s needs change with temperature and humidity,” said Cassandra Ferretti, owner of Regen Skin.

“In winter, you may need richer, hydrating products to combat dryness, while in summer, lighter oil-free products can help manage increased oil and sweat.

“Sun exposure also impacts skin sensitivity, so modifying your routine helps keep your skin healthy and balanced year-round.”

Ms Ferretti said a good summer skincare routine starts with hydrating from the inside out.

It’s recommended women consume about two litres of water a day (8 cups), while men should drink about 2.6 litres per day (10 cups).

“Drinking plenty of water helps maintain hydration while supporting your skin’s elasticity and can help flush out toxins, contributing to a healthier and more radiant complexion,” said Ms Ferretti.

“As we approach the warmer season, we’ll see higher humidity levels, which can lead to more sweating and cause potential dehydration. This can affect your skin’s moisture levels and overall appearance.”

For summer, Ms Ferretti recommends using a high SPF sunscreen and reapplying it frequently.

“Choose a lightweight, oil-free moisturiser, exfoliate one to two times a week and stay hydrated with a toner or mist,” she said.

“Avoid direct sunlight during peak hours and avoid sun exposure if using products with active ingredients.”

Derma Cosmetika founder, director and dermal therapist Lilian Botros agrees that it’s important to tweak your skincare seasonally, particularly given the higher UV ratings in summer and because the skin changes depending on the season.

She recommends being extra vigilant about skin protection by wearing a hat, sunglasses and a physical sunblock.

“The physical sunblock has the highest protection. It can be SPF 30 or SPF 50, but the way it’s made, it has zinc, so you actually have something on your skin that blocks the sunlight,” said Ms Botros.

“Reapply sunblock every three to four hours. People put it on once in the morning and think the skin is protected, but it wears off.

“If you have foundation on, use a make-up that already has SPF, then you can put a fresh layer on top (rather than washing off your make-up and starting from scratch).”

Ms Botros said you can use the same cleanser year-round, but make sure you’re exfoliating once or twice a week.

Incorporating a serum into your skincare routine is also important, including in the summer months.

Cosmeceutical brands usually have a higher percentage of active ingredients, according to Ms Botros, which works better for the skin.

Keep in mind that some products, like retinol (a form of vitamin A), should only be applied at night, as skin may become more sensitive to sunlight.

Vitamin B or C serums may be used morning and night depending on the skin condition, skin type and the routine.

Lastly, Ms Botros said you can change your moisturiser in summer, but only if your skin type calls for it.

“If you have oily or combination skin, you may choose a lotion instead of a cream, but perhaps not for dry to very dry skin.

“Very dry skin can be dry throughout the year – it just gets worse in winter. But you still need that cream and extra oil in the skin to keep it moist and hydrated.”

Ms Botros added that it’s a good idea to have a skin consultation every six to 12 months.

That way, you can get an update on your skin’s condition and have peace of mind that you’re using the right products with the right active ingredients
