Welcome to our Summer/ Autumn 2024 season.

The big news is that tickets are now on sale for this year’s pantomime Cinderella, starring Cambridge legend Matt Crosby. This is the highlight of our theatrical calendar, and we are incredibly proud to produce the show afresh in-house each year, overseeing every stage of the creative process. We’ll be working hard from now through to opening night to ensure the carriage awaits and Cinders makes it to the ball!

This year, as well as our annual panto, we have been collaborating to present several new works this season and beyond. We are delighted to be working in partnership with Bedazzle Inclusive Productions to present an original piece, Mythic Trials, as the old tales of Greek mythology receive a contemporary re-examination. Fans of Ian Rankin’s legendary Scottish Inspector will relish our latest co-production of Rebus: A Game Called Malice, as a dinner party game leads to more mysteries being uncovered than the unsuspecting guests had bargained for.

Creating a programme for our main stage is a constant and year round effort, with us continually looking out for the best the UK touring market has to offer. This season it feels there is a particularly strong lineup of great plays and brilliant actors treading our boards. The Terence Rattigan double bill of The Browning Version and Separate Tables, starring national treasure Siân Phillips and theatre legend Nathaniel Parker is not to be missed. I can hardly believe it’s been twenty years since Alan Bennett’s tale of the Sheffield grammar school lads preparing for Oxbridge first appeared on stage, but this anniversary tour of The History Boys promises to be as witty and profound now as it was back then.

Lovers of musicals are in for a treat with Here You Come

Again: The New Dolly Parton Musical which is bound to be the feel good event of the summer, celebrating the healing power of a well written country song! And you won’t want to miss the cult classic Heathers the Musical, coming to our stage after a smash hit West End run and two national tours.

We are all thrilled to be able to offer a great range of productions for our younger patrons this season, from the incredible puppetry in Dinosaur World Live to the wonderfully wicked Awful Auntie, bringing the popular David Walliams tale to life, and perfect for a half-term treat. I particularly look forward to welcoming back the stage adaptation of Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came To Tea as I’m sure many parents will have fond memories of reading this to their children. New adaptations of the classic Spot’s Birthday Party and bestselling children’s book The Lion Inside promise to delight young theatregoers, and I hope will form the beginnings of a lifelong love of seeing old and new stories unfolding on stage.

On top of this we have some brilliant one-nighters to look forward to, ranging from the comedy of Stewart Lee and Punt and Dennis, to tales from the haberdashery with Patrick Grant and Esme Young, to the multi award-winning lyricist Sir Tim Rice in his evening of stories and songs from his illustrious career.

Sir Tim Rice, the multi award-winning and internationally renowned lyricist, visits Cambridge with a very special live musical theatre event My Life in Musicals – I Know Him So Well

Reflecting on his illustrious career, Tim will share anecdotes behind his songs, the hits and misses along with stories of his life and live performances from a wonderful catalogue of songs.

Packed full of hit musical numbers performed by the UK’s leading West End singers and musicians led by Musical Director Duncan Waugh, including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, Any Dream Will Do, A Whole New World, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata, I Know Him So Well and One Night In Bangkok, My Life in Musicals is an absolute must for fans of musical theatre.

PUNT & DENNIS WE ARE NOT A ROBOT

Hugh Dennis and Steve Punt are back on tour for the first time in 10 years. Older but not really much wiser, they are returning to what they do best; sitting in traffic jams wondering if a different route would have been better, and then in the evening, presenting their new live show. What have they learned from a decade of following the news for Mock the Week and The Now Show? What wisdom has experience taught them? And have they learned any new jokes? Let’s hope so. They promise they have.

SUNDAY 23 JUNE

AN EVENING WITH PATRICK AND ESME

Patrick Grant and Esme Young, judges of the hugely popular BBC2 series The Great British Sewing Bee, visit the Arts Theatre for the first time with a very special one-off show created just for Cambridge.

Patrick Grant is an award-winning Scottish fashion designer with a career spanning almost two decades. An outspoken advocate for radical change in the fashion and clothing industry, Patrick has spoken for Ted Talks, written for many newspapers and magazines and is currently penning his second and third books.

Esme Young is an English fashion designer and television presenter who began her career in the 1970s by opening the iconic fashion shop Swanky Modes in Camden. Esme makes costumes for film, including hit titles including The Beach, Bridget Jones’ Diary, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Trainspotting.

BOUNDER & CAD

Prodigal sons of college choirs and Cambridge Footlights, ‘supremely entertaining’ musical-comedy duo Bounder & Cad are finally coming home. Twice selected for BBC Radio 4Extra’s Comedy Club Pick of The Year, they are delighted to be bringing their ‘blissfully funny’ ★★★★★ reviewed show to Cambridge Arts Theatre. Expect hilarious original songs, making mischief of anything from backhanded love-songs to tax avoidance, via cricket, rock’n’roll and underwear.

Igor Stravinsky’s brilliantly inventive The Rake’s Progress charts young Tom Rakewell’s journey from an unexpected riches to ruin at the hands of his own naivety and a devilish new friend. One of Stravinsky’s crowning achievements in his pioneering career, the opera is a cynical but humanistic depiction of loss, love and how the devil finds work for idle hands.

The production is helmed by Polly Graham, Artistic Director of Longborough Festival Opera, and the up-and-coming conductor and composer Jack Sheen.

Summer, 1954. The atmosphere at The Beauregard Private Hotel, Bournemouth is one of repressed emotions and post-war gentility. In this world of hushed conversations and quiet anonymity, an unlikely friendship develops between a shy spinster and a retired Army officer. But when a newspaper threatens to reveal the Major’s long-held secret, will the other residents cast him out for good?

Meanwhile, in the heart of the Midlands, a long-serving teacher is on the verge of retirement from his distinguished public school. Diminished by poor health, a crumbling marriage, the distain of his colleagues and the derision of his pupils, he is given cause to re-examine his life when a young student offers an unexpected gesture of kindness.

Terence Rattigan’s one act masterpieces Table Number Seven (from Separate Tables) and The Browning Version are paired for the first time, capturing one quietly momentous evening seventy years ago.

But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true.

We welcome thousands of pupils every year for our dedicated school pantomime performances. The most magical rags-to-riches tale of all, Cinderella is given a brilliantly fun Cambridge twist. The inclusive drama school Bedazzle’s cast of neurodivergent and disabled performers present an exciting new piece of theatre, interrogating Greek mythology through a contemporary lens. Using expressive movement and new writing, Bedazzle strive to reflect and challenge the wider issues in society.

September Sebastian Faulks’s best-selling novel and epic story of love and loss Birdsong depicts one man’s journey through an all-consuming love affair into the horror of the First World War. Set before and during the Great War, Original Theatre’s production is ideal for both History and English students. Age guidance 14+

Alfred Hitchcock’s classic spy thriller The 39 Steps is an incredibly inventive example of fast-paced live theatre and world-class performances which Drama students will love. Four fearless actors play 139 roles in 100 minutes in the Olivier and Tony Awardwinning comedy that has played in 39 countries across the globe.

All tickets for the Arts Theatre include a £3 per ticket booking fee. The booking fee is essential direct income for the Theatre. Because ticket revenue is divided between many different parties, an increase in ticket prices would not necessarily benefit the Theatre. By charging a booking fee, we can ensure that every penny goes directly to the Theatre to help us protect its growth and longevity.

Tickets are not refundable unless a performance is cancelled.

Other exchanges may be made under certain conditions, with at least 48 hours prior notice; please contact the Box Office for details as policy is subject to change.

Discounts for customers with disabilities apply to most performances. We also offer discounts on certain performances for students, groups and schools. Please note there are no discounts on the lowest price seats and only one discount applies and all discounts are subject to availability. Please check with the Box Office at time of booking for available discounts.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOUR VISIT BAG AND CLOAKROOM POLICY

In the interest of customer safety the following items cannot be taken into the auditorium: Rucksacks or backpacks in any form and of any size (including children’s rucksacks, handbags that can be worn as backpacks), bags larger than 25cm x 35cm, shopping bags, larger items such as holdalls / suitcases and umbrellas longer than 25cm.

We strongly urge you to leave all bags at home or in your car, where it is practical. If you bring them to the Theatre you will be asked to check them in to the cloakroom which is situated on the first floor past the Stalls Bar (Peas Hill entrance).

Please allow sufficient time to travel to the Theatre and to allow for the additional delays this may cause. We recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before the start of the performance.

The Arts Theatre aims to care for every patron as an individual, on a one-to-one basis.

There are parking spaces for customers with disabilities in four locations near the Theatre: four on Peas Hill; two on Wheeler Street; seven on King’s Parade and thirty six in the Grand Arcade car park. If you have mobility requirements, please advise the Box Office when booking tickets so we are able to allocate you the correct space. Mobility scooters cannot be accommodated inside the building. We have four house wheelchairs (including one electric) available for use during all performances, subject to availability.

We have a Sennheiser infra-red hearing enhancement system, designed to help DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING patrons both without hearing aids, and for those who have hearing aids with a ‘T’ setting. We are also able to provide headsets and personal induction loops. If you have never used one before, we recommend arriving at the Theatre early so that our Front of House staff can explain how they work.

Some of our performances are BSL INTERPRETED. The British Sign Language interpreter will stand to the right of the stage, where they will interpret dialogue, as it is spoken. We also programme CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES; words will appear, as they are spoken or whenever a sound is made, on a screen positioned above or to the side of the stage.

For patrons who are BLIND OR VISUALLY-IMPAIRED, we can provide large print cast lists on request. Guide dogs are welcome in the auditorium, please inform the Box Office at time of booking, so that they can allocate the relevant ticket. We programme a number of AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES throughout the year; the describer will explain what is happening, visually, on stage throughout the performance and this is relayed through a headset. A pre-show touch tour of the set is often available.

We also offer RELAXED PERFORMANCES, specifically designed to welcome people with an autism spectrum condition, learning disability and sensory or communication disorders, and families with very young children.
