WELCOME Dear Camarada Friends, 25 years….I am taking a pause to let that sink in and feel the tidal wave of gratitude for our musical community in San Diego – thank you with all of my heart. It has been my pleasure and an amazing journey to bring stellar chamber music experiences to all of you. It seems I have always been a creator of experiences in some fashion. My parents set the example of connecting people and hosting events for me from an early age – and I grew up fostering a passion for building community through music. In high school I organized all of my girlfriends into a choral octet. I picked the music, rehearsed them, accompanied them on piano and found “gigs” for our performances. The truth is my inspiration to form this ensemble in the beginning was purely to get out of band rehearsal! I couldn’t bear the slow pace or the conductor! In the end, we had a blast – some performances better than others – and it cemented our lifelong friendships. As I look forward to Camarada’s 25th season, I am in awe of the incredible “line-up” of musicians and composers. As I have mentioned before, Co-Artistic Director Dana Burnett and I dream up these concerts by Photo by Monique Feil. starting with one piece of music or a theme – and then follow the thread and continue to shape the programs until they feel just right. Dana and I both love this process – it is where the magic begins. Our goal is to create experiences that offer an oasis in your busy world, connection to your community and a continuing celebration and education of culture from around the world. Our 25th Anniversary Season is more exciting than ever! All season long we will celebrate with special events, new programming and guest artists. Stay tuned! In deep gratitude,

Beth

Equally comfortable performing in the styles of classical, modern, electroacoustic and jazz, his hundreds of performances have taken him throughout the United States and to important concert venues in Sweden, Germany, Italy, Mexico, China, Japan, Taiwan, Canada, Ireland, and Australia. Todd maintains an active performance schedule as a concert soloist, first-call saxophonist with the San Diego Symphony and San Diego Winds and is also a founding member of the internationally acclaimed SWARMIUS Ensemble and S-TET. Susan Wulff, double bassist, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a double Bachelor of Music in bass and vocal performance at California State University Sacramento and completed her Master of Music at the University of Southern California. She has been Associate Principal Bassist with the San Diego Symphony since 2004 and had the privilege of working with many highly regarded orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Sun Valley Summer Symphony, Orcas Island Chamber Music Festival, La Jolla Summer Fest, Mainly Mozart, Pacific Music Festival in Japan and the National Repertory Orchestra where she was a featured soloist and principal bassist. She has held positions with The Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and New West Symphony and continues to perform regularly with the boundary-pushing San Diego based chamber ensembles, Art of Élan and Luscious Noise. Ms. Wulff has gained international recognition for her innovative workshop that utilizes dance as a way to connect musicians with their inner groove. Mike Wofford, pianist and arranger, was born in San Antonio, Texas, and grew up in San Diego, California where he began piano lessons at the age of seven. He later studied briefly with local jazz piano teacher, Bill Franks. Mike began his professional career recording with Slim Gaillard in 1961. Wofford became more and more in demand as a freelance studio pianist working in TV, film scoring and recording in general. During this period, he recorded or performed with, among others, The Ventures, Joan Baez, The Jackson Five, Cher, John Lennon, Donna Summer, Sergio Mendes, Harry Nilsson and Roger McGuinn. In 1979 and again in 1983 he toured as Sarah Vaughan’s conductor and pianist, a position he also later held with Ella Fitzgerald from 1989 to 1993.Wofford now works primarily with his own trio and quintet, as well as with his wife, noted jazz flutist Holly Hofmann, in duo, quartet and string orchestra settings. They are both Capri Records artists. Juan Allesandrini, dancer, was introduced to Tango at the age of 10. He was part of one of one the most important folklore festivals in Argentina, “La Noche Más Larga”. Being part of this festival inspired him to continue his tango training in Buenos Aires. After a few years, he was invited to teach in the United States at Carolina Zokalski and Diego Di Falco’s Authentic Argentine Tango School. For the last three years he has been actively teaching and performing at milongas and galas in the tri-state area. Most recently he has performed with Leonardo Suarez Paz’s Cuartetango at the Argentine Consulate in New York City. Juan enjoys dancing to traditional style; he believes the authentic principals of Argentine Tango provide the best foundation for any tango dancer.

Carolina Jaurena, dancer, has been teaching and performing for over 20 years. The height of her professional career is her role as a primary dancer in the feature film Random Hearts, directed by Sidney Pollack. She has been part of performances including “Eternal Tango” with Hector del Curto, The Show “Tanguero”, “Tango! Soul and Heart” with the Choral Arts Society of Washington at Kennedy Center and the off-Broadway Show, “Tango House”, produced by Juan Fabbri. International workshops and performances include Canarias Tango in Spain, 100 Años de Tango at the Solis Theater in Uruguay and in Germany she has performed at The Theaterhaus in Stuttgart, Alte Synagogue in Hechingen and has taught workshops at Landesakademie in Ochsenhausen. She has performed and taught at many tango festivals including: Tango Norte Festival in Sweden, Yale Tango Fest, Tango Fest Houston and New Orleans Tango Festival. Carolina is sought after as a dancer and teacher and renowned for her precision of movement, professionalism and charisma.

• Camarada was established 25 years ago in 1994 when Beth had a chance encounter with the great composer Arnold Schoenberg’s grandson, Randall, who invited Beth and her husband, Dave, to a very special concert featuring the music and art of Schoenberg the following evening. This synchronistic meeting and subsequent concert launched Camarada! Beth was so inspired that evening in Vienna, she set out to create a chamber group that would have its own mission, unique culture and fill music aficionados’ hearts with joy. Mary Barranger and Ann Chase joined Beth in founding Camarada in 1994 - beginning with several performances of Pierrot Lunaire by Arnold Schoenberg. {add the first two attached photos} • Camarada has grown from a few concerts a year to a thriving non-profit with five unique concert series and 10-20 outreach concerts a year featuring our talented local and visiting world renown guest artists. {add 3rd photo of RAul} • Camarada relies on you — our key donors and patrons — in order to fulfill our mission. Ticket and program sales only cover half of our annual expenses. CAMARADA’s intimate performances and unique community of audience, artists and music are only made possible by donations, sponsorships and grants.
