THE LAST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY
11:00 A.M.
We are an ecumenical, multi-racial, multi-ethnic Christian body that reaches out to the world with the Good News of Jesus Christ. To that end we strive to be welcoming, responsive, trusting and prayerful in everything we do.
TODAY IS TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY—the last Sunday in Epiphany. In the mysterious transfiguration of Jesus before awestruck disciples, God reveals Jesus to be “My Child, my Beloved”—the very words we heard early in Epiphany at Jesus’ baptism. With the confidence that he is forever held in God’s love, Jesus then sets his face toward Jerusalem and the suffering that awaits him there. This is why the Transfiguration is remembered on the Sunday before the season of Lent, leading up to Holy Week and the cross of Good Friday. “On the mountain, as he was praying he was transfigured before them—his face shining as the sun, his clothes dazzling white. Moses and Elijah also were there —and, then, a voice: ‘This is my Child, my Chosen, my Beloved. Listen to him!’” — The Gospels
Faith is the touching of a mystery, the perception of another dimension to everything. In faith we go beneath the surface to where the real meaning begins to shine. In simplest terms, faith sees the presence of God in all things. — Alexander Schmemann (1921-1983) We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent, and God is shining through it all the time. — Thomas Merton (1915-1968)
G ATHERING FOR WORSHIP PRELUDE During the Prelude, prepare for worship by centering your heart with this prayer by Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916)
Woke Up This Morning WOKE UP/Spiritual Calvary Sanctuary Choir
Lord God, I abandon myself into your hands. Do with me as you will. Whatever you may do with me, I thank you. I am prepared for anything; I accept everything. Provided your will is fulfilled in me, I ask for nothing more—I simply place myself into your hands. I give all I am and have to you, my God, with all the love of my heart. For me it is a necessity of love, this gift of myself, because in boundless confidence I know that I am your beloved Child. LIGHTING THE ALTAR CANDLES

LITANY OF ADORATION AND PRAISE
Psalm 50:1-6 Dwayne Pinkney, Cantor
Refrain. The Mighty God with power speaks, and all the world gives praise. O God, in perfect beauty you come to us. From the rising in the east of the morning sun, to its setting in the west, your love radiates out to all the nations. You come to your people and demand our attention—your faithfulness will not let you keep silent. Your love comes to us as a fire—searing us with your truth, devouring our guilt and our shame, guiding us home to your mercy and grace, filling us with joy. And, all you desire in return is that we live in thankfulness, generosity and peace. Come, let us bless the Lord! Let all earth’s people worship the Beloved with thanksgiving and praise! Refrain. MORNING PRAYER
Susan Sevier
Holy God, upon the mountain you spoke words of love over your Beloved—and, his disciples beheld his glory. May we, too, see Jesus in all his beauty and glory: the glory of his being born in poverty among an oppressed people; the glory of his embracing outcasts who were considered unclean; the glory found in his dying, disgraced and disfigured; the glory of his living again by the power of your love. And, seeing his glory, may we be changed into his likeness. Yes, holy are you, O God, whom we worship and adore. Amen. PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST
Susan Sevier
La paz del Señor sea contigo. Y contigo también. The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE
Make Us One
MAKE US ONE
Make us one, Lord, make us one; Holy Spirit, make us one. Let your love flow so the world will know we are one in you. A TIME WITH CHILDREN AND BLESSING
Amy Sullivan
People of God, what is your prayer for these children? Our prayer is that they grow up to be like Jesus—strong and brave, full of grace and truth! And, that we will help them. MUSICAL MEDITATION

L ISTENING FOR THE W ORD OF G OD HEBREW LESSON 1Now
2 Kings/2 Reyes 2:1-12 Pastor Erica
when the Lord was about to take Elijah up to heaven by a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal. 2Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Stay here; for the Lord has sent me as far as Bethel.’ But Elisha said, ‘As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So they went down to Bethel. 3The company of prophets who were in Bethel came out to Elisha, and said to him, ‘Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?’ And he said, ‘Yes, I know; keep silent.’ 4Elijah said to him, ‘Elisha, stay here; for the Lord has
sent me to Jericho.’ But he said, ‘As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So they came to Jericho. 5The company of prophets who were at Jericho drew near to Elisha, and said to him, ‘Do you know that today the Lord will take your master away from you?’ And he answered, ‘Yes, I know; be silent.’ 6Then Elijah said to him, ‘Stay here; for the Lord has sent me to the Jordan.’ But he said, ‘As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you.’ So the two of them went on. 7Fifty men of the company of prophets also went, and stood at some distance from them, as they both were standing by the Jordan. 8Then Elijah took his mantle and rolled it up, and struck the water; the water was parted to the one side and to the other, until the two of them crossed on dry ground. 9When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me what I may do for you, before I am taken from you.’ Elisha said, ‘Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit.’ 10He responded, ‘You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not.’ 11As they continued walking and talking, a chariot of fire and horses of fire separated the two of them, and Elijah ascended in a whirlwind into heaven. 12Elisha kept watching and crying out, ‘Father, father! The chariots of Israel and its horsemen!’ But when he could no longer see him, he grasped his own clothes and tore them in two pieces. 1Aconteció
Descendieron, pues, a Betel. Vinieron, pues, a Jericó. EPISTLE LESSON
2 Peter/2 Pedro 1:16-19 Reverend Palacios
16For
we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” 18We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. 19So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 16No
2Six
days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain apart, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, 3and his clothes became dazzling white, such as no one on earth could bleach them. 4And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, who were talking with Jesus. 5Then Peter said to Jesus, ‘Rabbi, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ 6He did not know what to say, for they were terrified. 7Then a cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud there came a voice, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved; listen to him!’ 8Suddenly when they looked around, they saw no one with them anymore, but only Jesus. 9As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one about what they had seen, until after the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10So they kept the matter to themselves… 2Seis
This is the Gospel of Christ. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL HYMN 627

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Holy Spirit, enlighten our hearts and open our minds so that, as did Jesus, we might hear the Father speak our true name: “Beloved Child, my Chosen, my Delight.” And, then, with Jesus may we go forth to serve, not in fear, but with joy—and, in the confidence that in all things we are God’s forever. Amen. SERMON

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. INVITATION TO GIVE AND TO SERVE MUSICAL OFFERING

Unless otherwise noted, all printed prayers and litanies are by Reverend Glaze. WORSHIP NOTES Alexander Schmemann, author of the first quote before worship, was an influential Orthodox priest. The second quote is adapted from a prayer by Thomas Merton, a Trappist monk of the Gethsemani Abbey in Kentucky. Merton was one of the most influential Catholic authors of the 20th century and an advocate of inter-religious dialogue and understanding. He died tragically at age 53. The centering prayer is by Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916). Born to an aristocratic French family, Foucauld served as an Army officer in Algeria. After a religious conversion he returned to Algeria as a Trappist monk until he was killed in an anti-French uprising. In 1933, inspired by Foucauld’s witness, a monastic order known as the Little Brothers of Jesus was formed in Algeria. Members of the order make no explicit attempt to debate or convert. They simply live among their neighbors as followers of Jesus. MUSIC NOTES Today’s music combines traditional Spirituals and Gospel music to celebrate February as Black History Month, while also paying tribute to the life of pastor and musician Andraé Crouch. Born in 1942, along with his twin sister Sandra, Crouch made a tremendous impact in both sacred and secular music during his lifetime. He passed on January 8th of this year, at the age of 72. His sister released this statement: “Today my twin brother, womb-mate and best friend went home to be with the Lord. I tried to keep him here, but God loved him best.” REMEMBER IN PRAYER Carmen Angdisen; Nardita (Edith) Angdisen; Teddi Angelov, Liubov Russell’s friend; Maria Bensussen, Ryan Harvey’s grandmother; Sara Bermúdez, Lorena Pereira’s mother; Grady Branham, Cheryl Branham’s father; Cristina Chacón; Roberta Clyburn, Janice Glover’s sister; Radost Fortunova, Liubov Russell’s sister; Gail Ousley Gipson, Ben and Natalie Barrens Rogers’ friend; family of José Gonzalez in El Salvador; Jenny Goon; Janet Grove; Berniece and Bill Harward; Rena Jirack; Lucy Johnson, Jackie Wright’s grandmother; Sam Kanakry and Helen Lewis, Cheryl Branham’s friends; Will

TODAY TEN YEARS AGO TODAY, Calvary installed a new steeple! The Calvary spire had been missing since 1913 when a tornado severely damaged the original. Nearly a century later, a replica was created based on existing photos and other sources, and using modern materials to replace the original ironworks. It was installed on February 15, 2005. February also marks ten years of Chalice Hymnal in our Sanctuary as our primary hymnal and worship tool. It’s another Calvary anniversary moment—and we are thankful! BAPTIST WORLD ALLIANCE SUNDAY.
