Women’s Basketball

aith

imnaugh

aith Mimnaugh enters her 19th season as the head coach of the Cal Poly women’s basketball program having led the Mustangs to either the NCAA Tournament or the WNIT four times since 2011. Overall since 2008-09, Mimnaugh has coached Cal Poly to a 128-89 record, including 80-34 in the Big West Conference (a .702 winning percentage). Of the 33 Division I coaches on the West Coast, only Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer came into 2015-16 with a higher in-conference winning percentage with her program over that same time span. Mimnaugh’s teams have led the Big West in both scoring and field goal percentage in four of the last seven years. They’ve also been No. 1 in the conference in 3-point accuracy on all but two occasions since 2007-08. Most recently, in 2014-15, Mimnaugh guided Cal Poly to a third-place showing in the Big West standings, marking the seventh consecutive year the Mustangs finished in (at least) the Top 3. The season saw seniors Kristen Ale, Ariana Elegado and Taryn Garza finish their careers with a combined 2,500-1,000-500 stat line, as all earned spots on the all-conference team. Elegado also was chosen as one of 30 Senior CLASS Award candidates across the country, belonging to a group also including selections from Baylor, UConn, Duke, Stanford and Tennessee, among others. She became the program’s third-leading all-time

Photo by Ian Billings scorer, with 1,502 points, while finishing with 243 career made 3s, the fourth-highest total in the history of the Big West. While also leading the league in assists (at 4.9 per game), Elegado upped her career total to 466, just one back of equaling the all-time program record set by former teammate Jonae Ervin. Both her overall 3-pointer and assist counts ranked among the Top 25 for all active Division I players, and she departed owning six school records whether on a single-game, season or career basis. Garza, meanwhile, won the league’s Best Hustle Award for the second year in a row (and the seventh instance since 2001 that one of Mimnaugh’s players was recognized for their effort). Their Senior Day was one to remember, as the team went on an early 20-0 run to set the tone for an 84-63 win over UC Santa Barbara — the Mustangs’ ninth straight in the Blue-Green Rivalry — which saw 12 different players get into the scoring column. Another highlight during the home schedule came on Jan. 17, when a crowd

of 2,047 fans packed Mott Athletics Center to watch Cal Poly beat CSUN 63-54. A year earlier, the Mustangs reached the conference tournament championship game for the fourth time in a six-year span. While averaging a double-double (at 16.9 points & 10.1 rebounds), senior center Molly Schlemer earned her second consecutive all-conference first-team status. She

Women’s Basketball helped the Mustangs win the league’s rebounding title at 44.5 per game, the highest average the Big West had seen in 15 years. Following her senior season, Schlemer (the fifth-leading scorer and rebounder in program history) was invited to the Pro Hoops Combine in Nashville, Tenn., and then played on the Net Scouts Basketball USA All-Stars Tour of China. As a rookie for the Chemnitz ChemCats in Germany, Schlemer was the Damen Basketball Bundesliga’s only first-year player to make the Eurobasket.com honors list, receiving a spot as an honorable mention. She closed 2014-15 averaging 14.8 points and 9.2 boards in the country’s top league. Meanwhile in the backcourt in 201314, both starters for Cal Poly, Ervin and Elegado, tied atop the Big West leaderboard for assists, distributing 4.5 each. (Ervin also led the league in that category as a junior, when the Mustangs ranked 22nd nationally as a team, with 15.9 per night.) As a sophomore, Ervin made more history, etching her name into the NCAA record book by tying to lead the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio (at 2.67). Schlemer (1,133), Ervin (1,072) and Elegado were the fourth, fifth and sixth players Mimnaugh has coached in San Luis Obispo to reach the thousand-point milestone. In 2012-13, Schlemer was named a FullCourt.com mid-major All-American honorable mention after finishing 10th in the country in field goal percentage (54.2) while also being selected as the conference player of the year and the Big West Tournament MVP. After defeating Pacific in the Big West Tournament final, 63-49, Cal Poly advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where the Mustangs faced No. 3 seed Penn State in Baton Rouge for the first round. In the previous season, the Mustangs won their second regular-season conference title in a row. Senior forward Kristina Santiago was fifth in the country in scoring, at 23.4 points per game, along with 9.9 rebounds, while becoming Cal Poly’s all-time leading scorer (1,953) and rebound artist (850). Santiago, who earned an All-American honorable mention from the Associated Press, has since become a professional star overseas. In April of 2015, she won her third straight Bulgarian playoffs MVP award as

her club, Dunav 8806, secured a three-peat of NBL championships. A year earlier, in 2010-11, Mimnaugh was honored with her second Big West Coach of the Year award after the Mustangs finished in first place in the standings. Cal Poly ranked 10th in the nation in 3-point shooting that season (at 37.1 percent), led by Rachel Clancy, a guard who not only earned the Big West Player of the Year award, but also was a third-team Academic All-American. Clancy went on to play professionally for Real Canoe Natación in Spain. One year prior, in 2009-10, the Mustangs shot 38.8 percent from 3-point range, ranking second in the country. Altogether, Mimnaugh has now coached the Big West Player of the Year in four of the past six seasons. She has seen her players named to the all-conference team 38 times at Cal Poly, plus nine all-freshman team honors, 11 alltournament team selections and 39 playerof-the-week accolades. Additionally, off the court, Mimnaugh has fostered a culture in which her players have earned All-Academic honors from the conference 35 times. A four-year All-Mid-Suburban League and three-time all-area selection at Elk Grove High School in Illinois, Mimnaugh (1977-81) assisted the Grenadiers to the 1981 Class AA state championship. Mimnaugh, selected to the 1981 allstate team, helped Elk Grove compile an 84-22 mark during her four-year prep career. She played collegiately at Loyola Chicago (1981-85) and remains the Ramblers’ career assists leader (1,000). The 316 assists Mimnaugh handed out during her 1984-85 senior season not only led the nation, but are still the ninth-highest single-season total in NCAA Division I history. Her 11.7 per-game figure as a senior remains the second-best average in Division I history. The Ramblers went 79-32 during Mimnaugh’s tenure. For her collegiate accomplishments, Mimnaugh was inducted into the Loyola Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2007, Mimnaugh was also inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Mimnaugh began her post-collegiate playing career with the Newcastle (Australia) Scorpions, serving as a guard and

player-coach from 1987-89. She began building her coaching reputation as an assistant at North Carolina State from 1989-93. While with the Wolfpack, she oversaw the operation of a program that reached as high as No. 2 in the national polls. While working under legendary head coach Kay Yow (the 1988 U.S. Olympic coach), Mimnaugh helped propel the team to the 1990 ACC title and the 1991 ACC Tournament championship. Mimnaugh earned her master’s degree in sports administration from North Carolina State in 1994. The University of Evansville named Mimnaugh its head coach in 1993. She led the Purple Aces in their move from the Midwestern Collegiate Conference up to the Missouri Valley Conference. Mimnaugh came to San Luis Obispo to serve as Karen Booker’s top assistant in 1996-97. Aside from her coaching duties at the time, she spearheaded the Mustangs’ weight-training program and assisted with recruiting. In 2008, Mimnaugh became one of two Cal Poly coaches to have managed an Olympic gold medalist, after former center and Mustang track & field star Stephanie Brown Trafton (1998-00) won the discus competition at the Beijing Summer Games. Several of Mimnaugh’s assistants have also been picked to lead their own programs at the college level, including Amy Starr (as associate head coach at Montana State), Marcia Foster (who was the head coach at Cal State Fullerton for four years and now serves in the same capacity at Fullerton College) and Bo Browder (a 17th-year head coach at Xavier University in Louisiana). Two more became head coaches before the start of the 2013-14 season: Kerri Nakamoto (at Cal State Monterey Bay) and Julie Shaw (La Verne). Mimnaugh is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, credentialed through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and is also a member of the U.S. Weightlifting Federation. Mimnaugh, who competed with Athletes In Action in 1985, is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

n her first three seasons back at Cal Poly, Kari Duperron helped the Mustangs reach the postseason every year. After a first-place finish atop the Big West standings in 2011-12, the 2012-13 season culminated with a conference tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament, followed by a second WNIT bid in 2013-14 and then the program’s seventh consecutive showing in (at least) the league’s Top 3 in 2014-15. Altogether, Cal Poly has gone 46-20 in conference play with her in the huddle. A former Mustang herself, Duperron went from a walk-on freshman to the team’s leader in minutes as a junior and senior. In the latter year, she was a team captain and was awarded the conference’s Best Hustle award. All four years since she came back to San Luis Obispo, Mustang players have won the same honor. With Duperron reinforcing that kind of work ethic, Cal Poly was rewarded with back-to-back Big West team rebounding titles in 2013 and 2014. Initially brought in to focus on the development of post players, Duperron began to work with Molly Schlemer at the start of the center’s sophomore year. Schlemer saw her averages jump by 10.5 points and 4.7 rebounds as a junior, when she finished 10th in the country in field goal percentage (54.2). Duperron also mentored the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in school history, Kristina Santiago. During the forward’s

senior year, she ranked fifth in the country in scoring, at 23.4 points per game (on 56-percent shooting), along with 9.9 rebounds, on her way to becoming an Associated Press All-American honorable mention. Both Santiago and Schlemer are now starring professionally. In 2015, Santiago won her third straight Bulgarian playoffs MVP award as her club, Dunav 8806, completed a three-peat of NBL championships. Schlemer, meanwhile, concluded her rookie season in Germany as the Damen Basketball Bundesliga’s only first-year pro to earn a spot on Eurobasket.com’s honors list. In addition to being the program’s recruiting coordinator, Duperron also now works closely with the Mustang guards. Most recently, she helped Ariana Elegado to all-conference first-team honors as a junior and senior, as well as a selection as one of 30 Senior CLASS candidates across the country in 2014-15, on her way to graduating owning six various school records involving assists, 3-pointers made and free-throw percentage. Duperron came to Cal Poly from the University of Washington, where she helped put together the No. 37-ranked recruiting class in the nation in 2011. Her other duties with the Huskies included scouting and working with the guards. While in Seattle, Duperron coached an All-Pac-10 First Team member in Kristi Kingma and an all-conference defensive honorable mention in Charmaine Barlow. She also supervised the program’s academic progress and served as the liaison to the compliance department. Before joining the staff at UW, Duperron spent two years at UNLV. Serving as the recruiting coordinator, she helped bring in the No. 56-ranked class in the nation in 2009. Duperron also focused on the Lady Rebels’ guard play, and contributed to offensive game planning and scouting. Also while at UNLV, she was heavily involved in the team’s community service and marketing campaigns, and conducted several free youth clinics, including a free

Duperron began her coaching career at UCLA (2003-07), where she started as an intern before being elevated to the director of basketball operations and an interim assistant coach. During the 2007-08 season, Duperron returned to her high school alma mater, North Torrance, as the assistant boys varsity coach. Alongside her father, head coach Gary Duperron, the Saxons won their first league title since 1972. As a player, Duperron finished her career earning two all-conference honorable mentions for the Mustangs. She still holds the Big West Tournament record for free throws earned in a game (19). Duperron graduated from Cal Poly in business in 2003, and added her master’s degree in sports management from Long Beach State in 2006.

uring her first six seasons on the staff at Cal Poly, Kristin Iwanaga has helped the Mustangs win three Big West championships while going 69-29 in conference play (a .704 winning percentage). In addition to specializing with the team’s perimeter player development, Iwanaga assists with the program’s recruiting, scouting and camps. A former point guard at Cal, Iwanaga coached both the co-Big West assist leaders in 2013-14, as Jonae Ervin and Ariana Elegado tied by averaging 4.5 each for the 38th-highest scoring team in the nation. Ervin also led the league in assists as a junior, a year after leading the entire country in assist-to-turnover ratio (at 2.67). She finished her career as the school recordholder for assists (467). Additionally, both Ervin (with 1,072) and Elegado (1,502) surpassed the thousand-point milestone in 2014. Elegado, who a year later was one of 30 Senior CLASS Award candidates across the country, finished 2015 as the program’s third-leading all-time scorer while again averaging the most assists throughout the Big West. Elegado’s career totals of 243 made 3s (the conference’s fourth-most ever) and 466 assists each ranked among the Top 25 nationally for all Division I players, and her .828 free-throw percentage as a senior was her sixth school record whether on a singlegame, season or career basis. With Iwanaga on the bench, Cal Poly has made it to the conference tournament

Iwanaga was the nation’s leading free-throw shooter as a senior at Cal in 2004-05, at .934. She also set a Pac-12 record for 3-point accuracy (.524) that season. title game in three of four years. In 2013, the Mustangs defeated Pacific 63-49 to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament for a first-round matchup with No. 3 seed Penn State at LSU. Ball movement and outside shooting have been a key to the consistent success, as Iwanaga has helped direct an offense that has been No. 1 in the conference in 3-point accuracy every year but two since she arrived in San Luis Obispo (including the No. 2 percentage in the country her first season, 38.8 percent). In 2012-13, the team’s 15.9 assists per game ranked 22nd in the country, carrying on a recent staple of the program (Cal Poly’s average of 18.3 in 2009-10 was fourth nationally). Iwanaga still holds both the Pac-12 free-throw percentage records for a career (.890) and single season (.934 — via an 85-for-91 display in 2004-05, when she led the country in the category). Also as a senior for the Golden Bears, she set the Pac-10 single-season record for 3-point shooting (.524) while earning allconference second-team honors. Iwanaga was a four-year starter in

Berkeley, as well as a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic honoree. She departed the program ranked fourth in school history in 3-pointers made (122), seventh in games played (115) and ninth in assists (317). She came to the Central Coast from St. Francis High School in Watsonville, where she served as the varsity basketball coach for the previous two seasons and as the assistant athletics director and chair of the Social Sciences Department. During two seasons under Iwanaga, the Sharks compiled a 45-16 record, posted a pair of runner-up showings in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, won the 2009 SCCAL Tournament title and reached the semifinals of the 2008 Northern California Division V Championships. Prior to her tenure at St. Francis, Iwanaga also served as the head coach of the San Jose Cagers AAU White squad and was the assistant JV coach at her alma mater, Archbishop Mitty in San Jose. Iwanaga graduated from Cal in 2005 with a degree in sociology. She also earned a master’s degree in sports management from American University in 2009.

Meet the Mustangs

n her first year with Cal Poly, Mackenzie Argens helped lead the Mustangs to the Big West Tournament championship game, followed in 2014-15 by the program’s seventh consecutive finish in (at least) the Top 3 of the conference standings. With her working primarily with the team’s post players, Cal Poly led the league in rebounding in 2013-14, at 44.5 boards per game — the most throughout the Big West in 15 years. After tying for 31st in the country in double-doubles (15), Mustang center Molly Schlemer — now a professional starter and Eurobasket.com honoree for the Chemnitz ChemCats in Germany — was chosen to the all-conference first team. Additionally, forward Taryn Garza was also a significant factor on the glass in both seasons with Argens, finishing her junior year outrebounding every other player on the floor in four of the last 11 games on her way to winning the league’s Best Hustle award — before again winning the accolade for effort in 2014-15 after gathering nine double-digit rebounding games. The most recent season also saw Mustang sophomore Hannah Gilbert emerge as one of the Big West’s most efficient and productive post presences, as her .526 field goal percentage led the conference. Director of Operations • First Season • Iona, 2007

Tim Bayley joined the Cal Poly women’s basketball staff as director of operations prior to the 2015-16 season. An accomplished sports performance coach, he founded

Bayley FIT, LLC in 2007 after a career as a two-time NCAA First Team All-American 800-meter runner at Iona College. His program (based in Cambridge, Mass. and Lafayette, Calif.) features speed, agility and quickness workouts for young athletes tailored to their respective sports. In Massachusetts, the company also partnered with Khalsa Chiropractic to build functional training regimens centered on prehab and rehab suited for a wide variety of injuries. Also while in New England, Bayley served as a volunteer assistant coach for Harvard’s cross country and track & field teams from 2011 through 2014. He mentored Crimson studentathletes on the way to five school records in the middle-

distance events — a group that included All-American Erika Veidis — and helped the squads race to three Ivy League championships between the indoor and outdoor seasons. Additionally, from 2009 through 2012, Bayley was a PUMA-sponsored athlete and grassroots running ambassador. During that time, he represented Great Britain at the World Indoor Championships in 2010, running under four minutes for the mile four times. Bayley earned a baccalaureate degree in sport and exercise science from the University of Brighton (in England), graduating with honors in 2005, before completing a master’s degree in public relations from Iona in 2007. As a competitor for the

Gaels, Bayley won two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference titles in the 800 as a junior and senior (with the latter spring also seeing him claim the overall MAAC Student-Athlete of the Year award), and went on to earn All-America status both times, including via a silver medal at the 2006 NCAA Championships (with a careerbest time of 1:46.64). At Iona, Bayley also earned Academic All-America accolades from both ESPN the Magazine and CoSIDA in 2007. Bayley came to the U.S. after winning the British national title in the 800 in 2005. He recently relocated to San Luis Obispo with his wife Priscilla, an assistant coach for the Cal Poly cross country and track programs.

yrd Graduate Assistant • First Season • Dartmouth, 2013 Kelsey Byrd joined Cal Poly’s staff as a graduate assistant before the 2015-16 season. She played college basketball at Dartmouth before graduating with a degree in geography (minoring in public policy) in 2013. A native of San Jose (where she was a three-year varsity captain at Valley Christian), Byrd came to San Luis Obispo from Vinalhaven, Maine, where she was a community wellness coordinator (conducting meetings, implementing programming, overseeing policy changes and managing grant

funding) as an Island Institute AmeriCorps Fellow. During that time, she also served as an assistant varsity girls coach at Vinalhaven High School, helping to guide the Vikings to their first state tournament berth since 2009 while providing player instruction, team scouting and preseason conditioning. Additionally, in the summer of 2014, Byrd was the assistant director for the Bowdoin College Women’s Basketball Camp in Brunswick, Maine, where she facilitated skill development,

conducted a classroom workshop on growth mindset and goal-setting, and fulfilled dayto-day logistics such as set-up and officiating. While a student at Dartmouth, she was also the vice president for the college’s cycling club, organizing daily operations such as team finances and scheduling, along the way raising nearly a quarter of a $35,000 budget through community and alumni outreach. Byrd is currently pursuing her master’s degree in sports management at Cal Poly.

Mustangs in the pros

Above: Former Mustang Molly Schlemer signed with the ChemCats Chemnitz of Germany in October of 2014. Chemnitz (upper-left), which also featured the German National Team captain in Tina Menz, plays in the Damen Basketball Bundesliga, the country’s premier league. The move for the 6-foot-5 center came after an offseason that included an invitation to the ProHoops Combine in Nashville, Tenn., as well as a ninegame stint on the NetScouts USA AllStars Tour of China (upper-right). Then in September of 2015, following her All-EuroBasket rookie season, Schlemer was picked up by Urla Belediyesi Gencli in Turkey. Middle-right: After a stint with Hapoel Rishon LeZion in Israel, Kristina Santiago rejoined Dunav 8806 in December of 2013. The former AllAmerica honorable mention (standing seventh in from the left) was signed by Elfic Fribourg in Switzerland prior to the 2015-16 season. Lower-right: Rachel Clancy (6), a former third-team Academic All-American, played for Real Canoe Natación in Madrid during the fall of 2011. Schlemer, Santiago and Clancy all were honored as Big West Conference Players of the Year as Mustangs.

Stephanie Brown Trafton averaged 5.5 rebounds as a true freshman in 1998-99 before a knee injury cut the 6-foot-4 center’s career short prematurely in her sophomore season. Also a track and field star, however, she went on to win the Olympic gold medal in the discus competition in Beijing in the summer of 2008. In doing so, the former Mustang became the first American woman to win the gold in the event since the 1932 Games. On May 4, 2012, she also set an all-time American record with a throw of 222 feet, 3 inches.
