17th Season in Football Championship Subdivision
Seven All-Great West Honorees Return
Cal Poly will play its 17th season of NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) football this fall. After eight years as an independent, the Mustangs competed in the newly formed Great West Football Conference starting in 2004 and has captured three championships (2004, 2005, 2008). Cal Poly played its first two FCS seasons in the now-defunct American West Conference with Cal State Northridge, Southern Utah and Sacramento State.
Cal Poly placed 10 players on the 2009 All-Great West Football Conference first and second teams and seven of the honorees return this fall. They are fullback Jake Romanelli and cornerback Asa Jackson, both on the first team; and wide receiver Dominique Jackson, offensive linemen Will Mitchell and Scott Winnewisser, defensive lineman James Chen and linebacker Marty Mohamed, all second-team selections. Honorable mention linebacker Kenny Jackson also returns.
