LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We want to acknowledge that we gather on the traditional land of the Indigenous People past and present. For thousands of years, this land has been the home of the Patwin tribes: Cachil DeHe Band of Wintun Indians of the Colusa Indian Community, Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation, and Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. The Patwin people have remained committed to the stewardship of this land over many centuries. It has been cherished and protected, as elders have instructed the young through generations. We are honored and grateful to be here today on their traditional lands.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Graduating Class of 2024:

On behalf of the Cal Maritime community, congratulations on achieving this milestone. Today marks our 94th commencement ceremony and we are gathered to send you off into the world, full of purpose and passion, for what will surely be a promising journey ahead.

Those celebrating with you today have witnessed all the effort and commitment throughout your college journey. You are poised for success, and they will remain some of your greatest supporters.

I have no doubt that you will represent Cal Maritime well in this next chapter of your life. Be proud of your accomplishments and carry with you the knowledge and experiences gained during your time here at Cal Maritime.

I look forward to seeing all you will achieve. You are—and always will be—a Keelhauler!

Congratulations!

2024 COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER

JOHN BETZ, CHIEF PORT PILOT - PORT OF LA & PRESIDENT OF CMAF BOARD

Captain John Betz, a double alumnus of California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime), serves as chair of the California Maritime Academy Foundation Board. Captain Betz earned his Bachelor of Science degree in nautical science from Cal Maritime and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California, College of the Law, San Francisco before returning to Cal Maritime to earn a Master of Science degree in transportation management.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Cal Maritime, Captain Betz spent 17 years sailing on Chevron Shipping Company’s ocean-going tankers, eventually serving as shipmaster. Chevron Shipping recognized Captain Betz for various achievements, including developing an employee indoctrination program and inventing a patented apparatus that prevented fatal lifeboat accidents. Captain Betz went on to build an independent consulting firm that specialized in a risk-based approach to ship management. He built an operational management system that formed the basis for a significant company-wide cultural shift for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and personally trained their entire engine officer corps.

Captain Betz is currently the chief port pilot at the Port of Los Angeles, the largest container port in the western hemisphere. He jointly oversees the Los Angeles Pilot Service, a team of dedicated professionals that diligently strive to ensure the safe and efficient movement of vessels within the Port. He holds pilot licenses for Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbors, San Francisco Bay, Prince William Sound, Cook Inlet, and various minor Alaska ports.

Captain Betz chairs the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor Safety Committee and is a member of the Propeller Club of Los Angeles/Long Beach, Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club and American Legion Post 43. He is a past president of the California State University Maritime Academy Alumni Association and a former commissioner on the State Bar of California, Admiralty and Maritime Law Commission. He has also served in both the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Navy Reserve.

Captain Betz is also a proud parent of a current cadet, Class of 2025.

ALMA MATER

Near the bay of San Francisco tucked in Morrow Cove Is a school we’ll not forget, though round the world we roam. Light the boilers, weigh the anchors, now we’re in the breeze. And we wish for all our shipmates, smooth winds and foll’wing seas.

We may sail the world twice over, all the seven seas; Through the straits of old Gilbraltar, — the narrows of Valdez. But whenever hearts grow lonely, bounding on the main, We’ll think of you our Alma Mater, and that will ease the pain.

Though the years may dim our mem’ries, of our youthful ways; The image of our dear companions will linger in the haze. California Maritime, we’ll ne’er forget when we Spent our days in love and friendship and endless harmony.
