CALLOVER FOR THOSE ON THE KNOWLEDGE

Me again! These editions are coming around far too quickly for my liking! I still need some help so please don’t be shy in sending in articles, topics and suggestions no matter how silly they sound, it all helps in putting together your magazine. After my request in the last issue for suggestions I received one from the 1980’s asking for a page 3! Well I hope that person realises that would mean a replacement of your esteemed editor and not sure you should have the time to even think about such things! The Para Olympics is over and once again Team GB exceeded expectation and the country was once again presented in the uppermost regard to the watching world. We won a total of 120 medals - 34 Gold, 43 Silver and 43 Bronze ending up third in the overall medal table.

Our Team Editor Frankie Peet Contributors Chris Ackrill Tom Whitbread Moggy Membership info@thecallover.co.uk

Then there was joint Olympians parade in central London which brought the public out in there thousands! Brought the city roads to a standstill but we will be getting back to normal now in the trade.

Design and Production Grant Poole-Adams

On top of the Olympics, the Para Olympic there was the first major tennis win for Mr Murray in New York. Despite the heavy traffic, I have enjoyed listening to the sport on the Radio whilst navigating around the capital.

01245 850949 www.thecallover.co.uk info@thecallover.co.uk

There have been some wonderful urban myths about what will happen to the Olympic Village but as far as I know, the only certain booked event is the World Athletics in 2017 so you guys will be able to relive the drama of the road restrictions. I read recently that the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will open in phases next year with ambitions transform it into an equivalent of New York’s Central Park. There will be over pathways and cycle paths, waterways, and acres of landscaped open space. The last issue was the best yet and hopefully we can continue to improve but it really needs you all to keep emailing and tweeting so we get the right content. Check out our tweets as some of it can help with your knowledge. I am seeing more and more Callover hi vis on the road but not all have signed up so therefore you have missed out on the £100 cash prize. I hope you enjoy this issue which as usual is packed with learning aids driven by suggestions. We are working on some more great ideas and incentives which will benefit you guys on the Knowledge.

Frankie Peet

Stay safe and good luck with the appearances now they are open again.

FREE Knowledge Associate Scheme We are pleased to invite you to enjoy the benefits of Associate Membership of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association. Having done the Knowledge of London ourselves, we in the LTDA are only too well aware of what you are going through at the moment. It’s tough but not impossible, otherwise there would not be the world famous and well respected phenomenon known as the London Taxi Driver. Because we have been out and about asking people who are doing the Knowledge what sort of cover they need from an Associate scheme, we are confident that we have come up with the ideal package to keep you...

‘Safe in the Knowledge’ What happens if? When you started on the Knowledge, you were told by the PCO to steer clear of anything that may prevent you from completing the course. This was good advice and most candidates will not experience any problems... BUT... Should you be found guilty of an offence, your ambition to become a Licensed Taxi Driver may be threatened. That is why it is important to join and register yourself on our FREE Associate Scheme.

So how does it work? As an LTDA Associate Knowledge Member the LTDA undertakes to represent you at all appeals against refusal by the Public Carriage Office to grant you a Hackney Carriage Licence. This applies to all hearings at the Public Carriage Office and City of London Magistrates court – excludes medical grounds.

How do I get it? Simple... just telephone 020 7286 1046 today and request an application form. Fill this out and send it back to us and we will make you an associate member FREE!

Don’t wait until it’s too late - join the LTDA. Call 020 7286 1046 NOW! 11098-LTDA_Callover_Ads.indd 2

IMPRESSIONS Hello Knowledge Guys and Gals! I hope you are fully recovered from Olympic fever and eeking out the last of the summer in peace. Great as it was, it did seem to go on for a long time. I have been making use of the return to normality by charging through my runs with renewed vigour – I can almost taste the metaphorical cigar that will be hanging from my lips when I’m reclining on my Scoot at Charing Cross Station having reached the golden 320! But now my thoughts are turning South to the Palestra Building…

Counting First Impressions It has been suggested that one’s entire Knowledge performance is predestined by the Examiners, seemingly at their mysterious whim, bearing little or no relation to one’s actual performance. There seems to be a possibility that a glance at the wrong person, a speck of dirt on your jacket, or an Examiner’s bad night’s sleep can put some mysterious marker somewhere that adds years to your Knowledge Sentence. Recently watching that documentary Streetwise sadly did nothing to assuage those fears! I am trusting that in this day in age there is no sinister ulterior prejudices that back up these qualms, but I am well aware that first impressions count. Your first Appearance is possibly your second most important (other than your last!), and I am currently wondering just how important it is.

Ready or not – here I come!

• Coffee - That cup o’ Joe is filled with caffeine and antioxidant flavonoids (don’t ask!) that may slash your risk of Alzheimer’s, so it’s good for your noodle. • Tea - N ot a coffee drinker? That’s OK, because tea - especially green tea is a brain-booster, too. • Wine – H urrah! Light to moderate amounts of alcohol may help protect you from age-related cognitive declines or even Alzheimer’s disease. Wine is fine, but beer or even your favourite cocktail can nourish your noggin, too. Just be sure to enjoy in moderation, as Ted Margolis will vouch, drink does not mix with scooters! Thanks for your entries to last month’s caption competition, everyone was very kind to Boris! The runner up goes to Curly in Bermondsey said: “I really should drink less Red Bull” and my favourite, by far, goes to @Wayne729: “As he hung there like discarded Jubilee bunting, Mr Johnson began to regret telling the cabby he should have taken that left onto Threadneedle Street.” Many thanks Wayne! This month I am not going to set you homework, but if you have any comments or suggestions about today’s offering I’d be interested in hearing from you via Twitter, email or a good old fashioned postcard.

Mog Have fun!

The question I am facing is this: how ready is ready enough for your first Appearance? Obviously there are statutory tasks to be completed – the Blue Book needs to be known like the inside of my fridge, and beginners points with associated turnarounds and junctions. But then there are cross sections, livery hall rambles, football runs, bankers, missing pieces and the small matter of eight thousand or so more points… It is clear I can’t do everything, I’d simply never get to the Map Test. I am aware of losing Knowledge I earned years ago, and points and junctions changing, and also, recently I’ve done a lot more in a short space of time and noticed everything has gone in a lot easier – naturally consolidating by travelling the roads more often, in a shorter space of time. Everyone is different and we all have our ways of learning. Mr Moggy painstaking scoured every quarter mile during his runs, lovingly recording it all, complete with diagrams, logs and link books. My philosophy, however has been to get my Blue Book runs completed as rapidly as possible, and keep the runs in my head. This has kept momentum and motivation flowing nicely, and this has served me well, so far.

More Speed, Less Haste But - I have this nagging vision of sitting in the Chair on my First Appearance and suddenly being smacked round the chops with the realisation I’m on the wrong end of a total whooping, with only flimsy office furniture between me and my very first D. Not only will I be staring down the barrel of a wasted year getting redlined first time round, there are worries about the general impression my haste to apply has given – it could be perceived as lazy, over confident, or that I underestimated the Knowledge. Will then the rest of my Appearances be affected by simply being too eager? I’m not sure of the answer to this one, but I don’t have to worry just yet – how many points did I say there were!? Blimey – all that worry - time for a stiff drink! But it’s not all bad – here are some drinks which are said to improve memory: • Apple Juice - This juice isn’t just for little kids. Research suggests apple juice may help your brain maintain its memory and learning skills as you age.

GOOD AND

BAD DAYS During my long spell of working nights on the taxi I would rank up on Dial-a-Cabs unofficial rank at Finsbury Square, this was the point where all the City account work was despatched to for quick allocation. Some of the journeys were short but some were beautiful roaders. These were mainly good jobs with very little trouble, but after you dropped off you would try and work your way back to the Finsbury Square by picking up cash rides or another credit ride. The cash rides could sometimes be a little dodgy, with passengers always wanting to put in an extra passenger (only allowed 4 at that time) or maybe doing a runner into the darkness at the end of the hiring. Even though you may feel that you are the most relaxed person, you would still get the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when certain individuals get in the back of your taxi. I always like to keep my taxi spotless, with windows clean and shiny, not like so many other taxis where they look like bathroom windows. In those days the back window was black, you could see through it but it was for the passenger’s privacy. The only supplier of licensed taxis at that time was Mann & Overton, in Wandsworth Bridge Road and because they were the sole supplier they knew they could abuse the fact. Whilst you waited in their waiting room for work to be completed on your taxi, you would listen to the horrific tales from drivers of past bad service. Little did I know that I also would be joining these hard put upon mushers. I took my new black taxi in for a nearside leaking shock absorber amongst other problems early one morning, then caught the old route master bus from New Kings Road back to Hackney. Later that afternoon I took the long journey back from Hackney to Fulham to retrieve my FX4 (early model). As I walked down I approached my taxi parked in the street I could see the shocker was still leaking, you have guessed it they had changed the offside one. When I queried this they tried to blame me saying that I had told them it was the offside one. I think their fitter was Stevie Wonder on an apprentice course, so I made them go through the waste bins until they found my instruction paper. They then said”You will have to come back tomorrow, as we are closing now.” So I informed them as I had my six year old with me I would be camping in their waiting room until my taxi was ready. Thirty minutes later I was presented with my taxi having a new near side shock absorber fitted. Not only as a musher do you have the public to deal with, you also have the garages as well. I used to have my servicing and overhauls done by Tommy Whitford who was in Ashwin Street off Dalston Lane by the taxi rank. As any driver would tell you Tommy was a great guy, he rented a space at the back of Sam Cooper’s garage where hundreds of drivers filled up on their way home eastwards. But Tommy was not known for keeping a clean floor in his work area so you needed a pair of Wellington Boots as it was like a Texan oil field. This was so far from the life I led working part time for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II the Queen Mother, her staff worked in what is best described as a cocoon, as most of the royal residences were away from highly populated areas. So they had a long walk or a taxi ride to pubs or clubs if any, except when in London at Clarence House where they were really in the centre of all the life of a great city. So when they travelled to Sandringham, Scotland, Windsor or Dover it was likened to a coach outing for the staff that travelled with me. One yearly trip was to Walmer Castle near Dover where Her Majesty was the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports; it was Walmer Castle where she stayed for the visit.

19

As Walmer Castle is a Museum all personal belonging had to be transported there for entertaining and her personal care. So I would load one of the coaches with the help of Shaun the Queen Mothers third chauffeur, this would include a trunk like the ones seen in pirate movies full of the silver needed for a mini banquet. The weight of this trunk if lifted incorrectly could result in a delicate part of your lower body dropping to your ankles and you ending up with a very high voice. There would also be a dining table, all the alcoholic drinks and mixers and glasses, plus all personal clothing in hanging wardrobes. You actually found out what a Pickfords removal man felt like. Travelling down the A2, M2 there are 2 very large radio masts on the right, this is as you start to climb a very slight incline. Well on this morning my vehicle decided that the weight was just a bit above the weight it wanted to pull, so the gearbox sent out a sound like a police siren and then with a large bang refused to function. But I was lucky enough to cruise to the nearside barrier. It was lucky that I had just purchased my first mobile phone and was able to contact Buckingham Palace, to inform them of my plight and get them to arrange with the AA for their biggest relay truck to be despatched to our location. While I was organising this, Mary a lovely Irish lady who worked as a maid informed me of her great need for a public convenience, so as a joke I informed the official at Buckingham Palace that I was in great need of a bucket. When the large truck arrived the AA man parked in front of us and walked back to our coach alongside the fence. Opening the door and saying in a loud voice, who is the person in great need of a bucket. At this moment Mary’s face went bright red as she slid down the seat out of view. We then hitched up the coach to the trucks winch and the AA man started to pull the coach forward, it was at this moment that the weight once again showed its insistence on not moving and the black smoke started to issue from the winch motor. So now the manoeuvre was a start stop operation until we had the coach safely aboard, then it was post haste down the motorway to the first Little Chef. With brakes applied and gravel spitting everywhere the door flew open and Mary departed the lorry like Usain Bolt, last seen disappearing through the door of the ladies. On arrival at the castle the job was not finished as the load had now to be carried by hand up the narrow spiral staircases to the first and second level, we were lucky as the local army barracks would send along six hopefully fit soldiers to help. As my vehicle was now out of action I was chauffeured back to London until their return journey some days hence. More next month, so just keep studying and get out on the bike in the sunny weather.

LIFE AFTER

THE OLYMPICS The Rough and the Smooth Well, the anticipated gold rush never came, and working the Olympic Period was the most depressing since the recession of the early 90s. Tourists were scared off by sky high hotel prices and fear of travel meltdown, and the Great British Public listened to TfL for once and stayed at home. By the time the hoteliers realised they’d priced themselves out of the market it was too late. Corporate account work was reduced to a trickle, and London became a ghost town. On the positive side, the Olympics as an event was a great success and this might attract tourism in the future. There was also some rare sympathy for the cab trade by those who could appreciate the conditions we were working under. The Jet Set If work levels get back to where they were in June and July I shall be content. I had my best two jobs and my best two days ever in July. The two jobs both involved the best type of passenger of all – the package. I love packages. There’s no hassle if you encounter traffic, and no criticisms of the route you’re taking. I’m not much of a socialite anyway, so deliveries suit me fine. Just put the meter on and enjoy the drive. Fantastic. I drove down the M1 to Brent Cross as normal, ready for work on Hendon Way or Finchley Road. A nice fifteen pounder from Finchley Road to the West End often sets me up nicely and puts me in an optimistic mood for the day ahead. Nothing today though, as I negotiated the perennial building works and speed bumps on Avenue Road, hoping Marylebone High Street or Harley Street might be more fruitful. I was on the Outer Circle when I was offered an account job from one of the villas I was just driving past. Housekeepers opened the electric gates for me, then helped to load three coolboxes of food. My destination was revealed as Luton Airport, where I was to meet a private jet. No matter that I’d driven past Luton half an hour ago, this was a “Roader” and one to be savoured.

23

I’m a worrier, so I had plenty of time to fret about not being able to find the commercial jet office at the airport and being embroiled in an embarrassing exchange of phone calls. The jet set world is not one I habituate as a rule. My normal experience of Luton Airport is catching an Easyjet flight to Amsterdam, costing considerably less than the cab fare to deliver some sandwiches from Regent’s Park. Anyway, I found the office easily enough and parked up. I was sent back out to retrieve some ID from the cab, was issued with a clip-on plastic badge, and was told to wait for an escort. I then had to follow an airport car on to the runway and up to the steps of a private jet. The engine was already running and the pilot took delivery of the boxes. Which was a nice start. The day continued with some quality account work and a few nice runs from Pancras. Just finishing my afternoon break parked at Grosvenor Gardens I accepted another account job from Belgravia. This was going to Heathrow Terminal 4, and with the fare inflated by the M4 closures at the time (it was worth £75). My best day ever was superseded ten days’ later when I took an account package from Bayswater down into deepest Surrey. It was a country house on a country road in the proverbial middle of nowhere. All I knew that it was near Godalming. My maps couldn’t really help me with this one, so it was a rare commission for Mr Satnav. After three motorways I slavishly followed my electrical friend as it led me down country lanes and through forests. I turned off the meter and drove the 95 miles home happy. Oh, and when I received my statement I found I’d earned a £9 automatic tip too! We all know we must take the rough with the smooth, but we don’t always remember to do so. Working the Olympics was a nightmare, but reminiscing on the good time I enjoyed earlier in the summer reminds me that there will be good times to come in the future.

Well that’s it all over after 4 years 2 months of doing the knowledge part time. I’m out just after the Olympics I heard that I’ve not missed much work wise but am Loving the first few days I’ve done. I found the suburbs just as hard but not obviously didn’t take as long. Just make sure you know all the runs and you can’t go wrong. I nailed all the runs I got asked as I call them twice a day for the last 3 weeks. I didn’t feel too excited when I got my rec but when I finished the suburbs the feeling was incredible.

The nine suburban sectors are: Enfield, Haringey and Waltham Forest Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Newham and Redbridge Bexley, Greenwich and Lewisham Bromley Croydon Merton and Sutton Hounslow, Kingston upon Thames and Richmond upon Thames Ealing and Hillingdon Barnet, Brent and Harrow

Can I say what a great help it was reading the article on the 80 Run Map test. I’’ve just put in for my 80 Run Map Test map test on 200 runs (no points) and was dead chuffed to read what’s it’s all about. A lot of the Knowledge seems to be sometimes personal and sometimes guarded secrets. Of course it isn’t if you know who to ask or where to look, and here is where it’s at!. Thank you for printing it and to Steve Barry for writing it. I too hope to contribute in the future. Mainly to keep myself going as it feels like you’re winning one minute and failing miserably the next also for great info to those on the Knowledge at any stage. Regards

Very good magazine and good insight to what I have to do next. Thank you! Courtesy of

Transport for London Taxi fares The table shows typical fares and journey times based on distance for three types of tariff. Fares and journey times may be higher if there are delays or heavy traffic.

Distance

Monday to Friday 20:00 - 22:00 Saturday and Sunday 06:00 - 22:00 (Tariff code 2)

Every night 22:00 - 06:00 Public holidays (Tariff code 3)

1 mile 2 miles 4 miles 6 miles Between Heathrow and Central London

£5.60 - £8.60 £8.40 - £13.40 £15 - £21 £23 - £28 £45 - £83

£5.60 - £8.80 £8.80 - £13.60 £16 - £22 £28 - £31 £45 - £83

£6.60 - £8.80 £10.20 - £14.40 £17 - £27 £28 - £32 £45 - £83

There is a minimum fare of £2.40 at all times.

How it works

FREE cab rental offer

The meter calculates the maximum fare based on:

Exclusive

• Time of day • Distance travelled • Time taken

The passenger will be expected to pay the full fare displayed on the meter at the end of the journey unless the driver and passenger agree on the final fare to be charged before the start of the journey.

Following this valuable advice about renting a cab rather than buying for the first six months our friends at Taxi Hire London have a great offer for drivers just starting out. See page 2 for details.

LONDON TO DISNEYLAND PARIS – AS IF BY MAGIC!

NAVIGATION MASTER

A fleet of iconic London taxis will be leaving Canary Wharf early on 12th October 2012, carrying children suffering from chronic and life-threatening illnesses on a magical tour to Disneyland Paris. The trip is all the more remarkable because the funding is raised by a volunteer group of committee members who organise the event each year and the drivers all give their time freely. The ferry crossings are donated by P&O, the packed lunches by The Marriott Hotel West India Quay, with the sponsors names all emblazoned on the sides of the taxis making the trip.

Knowledge Master UK Ltd have created the ultimate bit of gear guaranteed to make the life of licensed cabbies and those hard working Knowledge Boys and Girls easier and less stressful. Thousands in daily use by London Cabbies. Not only does their easy to search and use ‘Cabbie’s Mate’ satnav have a full UK map, voice guidance and traffic camera warnings it is the ONLY device to have four A-Z digital maps –the maps you rely on as a knowledge boy or girl to learn your runs. In addition to the United Kingdom map there areTHREE London maps. Extended Greater London-Detailed Inner London and the Arterial Road Map of Greater London.

After being collected the children and their carers go to the Big Breakfast send-off from Canary Wharf. Escorted by English and French police, ambulance crews, the AA and a tuck wagon, the three day trip will bring happiness to the lives of these youngsters who are undergoing various treatments and therapies. Specialist pediatric doctors and nurses from the hospitals where the children receive treatment will also be joining the youngsters on the trip to ensure their medical needs were met at all times.

On top of this, there are almost 500,000 points of interest in the Navigation application and almost 24,000 points of interest specially selected for the cab trade –updated every six months- in the A-Z Maps application. Search on a destination in A-Z automatically kicks the Navigation into action and plans the best route from where you are to that destination selected from either the Street, Point of Interest or Post Code database, and draws a helpful ‘cotton line’ from start to destination. In A-Z you can choose your own ‘Start’ and ‘Destination’ points from the database and the unit will draw the ‘cotton line’ from A to B.

This year’s trip is the 19th time the Magical Taxi Tour has taken place. Even the drivers who have made all of these trips find the journey is a rewarding experience thanks to the smiles on the faces of the children – and the grown ups too! You can learn more about the Magical Taxi Tour at www.magicaltaxitour.com where you will find details of previous trips and also how you can help by making a donation to help fund next year’s outing.

Built in is a Bluetooth handsfree mobile phone facility. Make and take phone calls via the inbuilt microphone and loudspeaker. Pair your phone and you avoid the risk of a fine and penalty points!!

For further information please contact our press officer Sandie Goodwin on 07860 439839 or by emailsandiegoodwin@hotmail.com

Parts and labour guarantee for 12 months. Full back-up service provided. In a nutshell the unit has: Digital A-Z maps including the ‘cotton line’ facility Full United Kingdom Satellite navigation Bluetooth hands free mobile phone dialling Music player Video player Photo album E-book reader Visit the website www.navigationmaster.com to see a full demonstration Buy online from the ONLINE STORE by clicking or entering the link www.navigationmaster.com/callover to receive a complimentary A-Z Cabbie’s Mate carry pouch. VIEW OF A BUTTER BOY So that’s it all over, I’ve picked up my cab and am on my way to

the Palestra to pick up my badge at the Badge and Bill Presentation. I hear quite a few people take their families to the presentation but I chose to go on my own as I knew I wanted to go straight out to work. As I plan the route from East London to Blackfriars Bridge I was thinking I hope they are giving out the badges today as I’ve just paid out my first weeks rent for the taxi. It is the first time I’ve had to pay to park, just like my appearances I’m half an hour early so I’ve had a walk to the little cafe opposite Palestra building for a tea and sausage roll that I’ve heard so much about from other cabbies. For the first time I’m in Palestra with no nerves feeling sorry for all the other students sitting in the waiting area, mind you, I still got my appearance hair cut. We all got provided with a very informative pack, talk from Mr Swire’s then John Mason who handed us our badges. I was thinking back to when I was on 56s and the knowledge seemed impossible, now I am sitting at the end of this huge achievement, and it feels great! I planned to to do a few fares before heading to my mum’s for dinner and then go back out for the night . I drove down towards London Bridge and a man put his hand up I felt quiet relaxed as I was not charging for my first job, as tradition states, the first

41

fare gets given to charity. ‘New change shopping centre please’ it couldn’t have been better, straight over London Bridge, up to Bank and down Cheapside. The guy wanted to pay but I said it’s going to give me bad luck if I don’t give my first job away so he said he would have to donate it to charity. I only did 3 more little jobs then went to my mum’s for dinner but couldn’t wait to get back out there after nearly four years of having no money. I was always worried about the drunks so after 10pm I keep the doors locked and only unlocked them after I have spoken to them. Every customer was fine and I didn’t have to turn any jobs down, which I was very pleased about. I’ve got into a bit of a rhythm now I tend to do 3 days getting in town about 6am and working till 2pm so I miss all the traffic on the way home. Then 2 nights starting at about 4pm and finishing at 1am. I prefer doing nights as I get more time indoors with the kids, that’s one of the great things about this job, it gives you a good amount of family time if you choose too.

We’ll see you all out soon and be positive it will pay off.
