Managing Editor’s Welcome

An Exciting New Addition Last month, I had the pleasure of visiting Phil Lebherz’s Premier Thoroughbreds in Oakdale, which represents an exciting new addition to California’s Thoroughbred breeding and racing industry based on its strong stallion roster of Smiling Tiger, Sierra Sunset, Sway Away and Twice the Appeal. The 70-acre property, also the home to Pat Grohl and Amie Allen’s stateof-the-art horse rehabilitation facility Premier Equine Center, has been in these new hands only since August of last year, but is already providing a great array of services to local breeders, owners and trainers. Previously a Quarter Horse farm, Premier Thoroughbreds and Premier Equine Center are the kind of operations that the Golden State should be proud of as it strives to maintain itself as one of the leaders on the national stage. This February 2014 issue of California Thoroughbred, the official publication of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association (CTBA), also features Points Offhtebench as the posthumous winner of the 2013 Eclipse Champion Male Sprinter award, as well as an analysis of the other California-breds also worthy of consideration for last year’s local championships. Sandwiched between articles on CTBA members Jerry Hollendorfer, the association’s Trainer of the Year for 2013, and Charles “Chuck” Winner, the new Chairman of the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB), are editorials on both the Golden State’s overall leading sires and its top freshman sires of last year. Focus On The Future spotlights 30-year-old Alexis Garske, an employee of Santa Anita Park, while the recent graded stakes win by the three-year-old colt Gervinho and the black-type wins by fellow Cal-breds Cyclometer and Dancingtothestars at that same local track are reviewed in detail. The eleven-year-old gelding Cost of Freedom, a California champion and grade I-winning millionaire, is the subject matter of Another Man’s Treasure and the eight-year-old mare Ultra Blend is highlighted as the 57th member of the CalBred Millionaires’ Row, while A Blast From The Past features the Cal-bred colt Terrang who won the $145,000 Santa Anita Handicap as a six-year-old back on Feb. 28, 1959. “Physitis In Young Horses” is the title of the latest Horse Care piece and there is also a list of California’s leading breeders of 2013, while this month’s Guest Forum contribution is from Megan Gaynes of Auction Horses Rescue and the balance of the magazine includes all our other regular columns, features and departments that we hope will also prove to be both enjoyable and helpful. Until next time, may you breed the best to the best and not just have to hope for the best! ! ! ! !! ! ! ! ! #0(1D,($AFH608(A@Q(Q(Q!-46+(=70>7.6R(;+6D6F(N,<<R(56F. ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
