Tom Bergstrom and Caitlin Zacha have been awarded the 2016 California Toroughbred Foundation/Southern California Equine Foundation Scholarship and CTF/Dolly Green Foundation Scholarship. CTF, along with the generous donations from the SCEF and Dolly Green Foundation, awards these scholarships annually to 2016 students at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine whose specifc interest is in equine practice. Bergstrom is scheduled to graduate from UC Davis in 2017 with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. A native of Southern California, he graduated Notre Dame High School and completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Occidental College. Prior to attending veterinary school, Bergstrom received the student achievement scholarship as a four-year member of the Occidental College football team. He has worked on a Toroughbred farm, at a zoo animal rescue, and as a veterinary tech Tom Bergstrom and assistant. Bergstrom’s emphasis at UC Davis has been in equine surgery, specifcally equine emergency surgery in lameness. He would eventually like to work in a Southern California racetrack practice. Zacha also is scheduled to graduate next year with a doctorate in veterinary medicine. A graduate of Viewpoint High School, Zacha came to UC Davis after double majoring in political science and communication at the University of Southern California. A lifelong horsewoman, Zacha has competed with her dressage horse and has served as a groom for the United States Dressage Team for the Pan American Games. She has also worked as a veterinary assistant for an equine ambulatory practice, as well as an assistant for a small animal general practice.
