California Chrome’s Triple Crown odyssey ranked him fifth in the world, earned him countless fans, and made him one of the most popular racehorses in recent memory. He also collected $2,397,800 in the three races and is now fourth on the all-time list of California-bred money earners. The International Federation of Horseracing Authorities ranked California Chrome fifth in its June 12 World’s Best Racehorse Rankings. Japanese-based Just A Way topped the rankings, followed by South African-based Variety Club. Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) victory netted California Chrome $1,417,800, while his Preakness (gr. I) win added another $900,000. As disappointing as his dead heat for fourth in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) was, California Chrome still earned another $80,000 for that effort. That gives the 3-year-old California-bred son of Lucky Pulpit— Love the Chase, by Not For Love, total earnings of $3,532,650. He is behind Tiznow at $6,427,830, Best Pal at $5,668,245, and Lava Man at $5,268,706 among all Cal-bred earners and above Snow Chief at $3,383,210.
