LETTER TO

EDUCATORS Dear Friends of Education, We believe that the arts are a core element in providing a well-rounded education for our students. That is why we have created programs to support educators in bringing the arts back in to the classroom with the goal of providing an art activity for as many students as we can. Last year, we served over 28,500 youth and educators with our programs: My Story: Literacy through the Arts; A Taste of the Arts in school or afterschool; attending a Center Stage performance or a Museum exhibition here at the Center, or by presenting art in our Student Gallery Wall or in the smART Festival. With arts curricula in their lives, students: ◊ Consistently test higher in reading and math and show deep critical thinking skills.* ◊ Are more able to cooperate, collaborate and problem solve.* ◊ Develop empathy, kindness and cross-cultural understanding.* ◊ Participate in civic engagement activities.* We are grateful to the Center’s Board of Directors, the City of Escondido, and our generous donors, educators and countless volunteers who help us manifest the Centers’ mission to create, celebrate, and discover the arts. Please mark your calendars for Educators’ Night Out on October 11, 2018, for a lovely evening hosted by us in the Museum where we can meet each other and continue on the path of Learning Together! All the best, Leah Goodwin

Director of Museum and Education *www.csusm.edu/artopp/tons_of_research/index.html

EDUCATION OUTREACH PROGRAMS The Center is proud to partner with local school districts to provide curriculum-rich arts outreach programs. We currently offer two unique programs.

GRADES K-12

GRADES 4-5

MY STORY: LITERACY THROUGH THE ARTS

My Story: Literacy Through the Arts is a unique program that combines arts disciplines with core subject academic learning by sending teaching artists to fourth and fifth grade classrooms. The fourth grade curriculum brings California history to life. Students study theater and acting, which develop strong speaking and listening skills. The fifth grade classes use digital photography to tell a story, and create written narratives that connect their photos with emotions, perspective, and elements of design, while sharpening language arts skills.

TASTE OF THE ARTS

Art, music, dance, and drama come alive in the classroom in this experiential program that explores one or more art disciplines. Sign up to have one of our Teaching Artist come to the classroom, either during the school day or after school, to engage students in the visual and or performing arts. All of the supplies will be provided during the one-hour activity. Each session is provided for a classroom size of 10-35 students.

For more information on participating in these programs, contact us at (760) 839-4179 or at education@artcenter.org. If you are interested in our classroom or school level customized outreach opportunities, please see the Art Discovery Field Trip section on page 6 for more information. The program aims to ensure that there is continued, reciprocal communication between the Center’s Museum and Education Department and its constituents. Please contact us at (760) 839-4176 or education@artcenter.org to find out who your Center Teacher Liaison is, or to volunteer for a school not yet represented.
