A LETTER FROM OUR CEO: Dear friends and family, After a year where the majority of our students learned in a remote setting, we were thrilled to bring our students and staff back to campus to kick off the 21-22 school year. Though the past year was challenging, we found strength in each other and because of our collective work, were still able to celebrate successes throughout the year. The 2020-2021 school year started with an expectation that distance learning would continue for only the first portion of the year. Over the first months of the year, it became apparent that a return to school for all students and staff would be difficult without a vaccine. As a team and network we worked to ensure systems for distance learning and family support were sustainable and effective, so that our students would continue to learn, grow and thrive. Our value of collective responsibility drove our work and our relationships. We continued to distribute chromebooks and hot spots so that all students could connect, we organized time for families to connect virtually and we celebrated students and staff in safe yet joyous ways. In addition, we were able to continue to support families through our Caliber Cares program because of the generous donations from our generous friends, which include many of you. Our collective efforts supported our students’ social-emotional and academic growth and development. At the end of what was an unpredictable and once again unprecedented year, we were thrilled with data showing our middle school students continued to grow at a pace similar to or better than that in years before COVID. There were also challenges, our younger students who are less independent struggled in distant learning and we have lots of work in front of us. We are grateful for all members of our network; teachers, leaders and support staff; for stepping up in all kinds of ways in the past few years. We are also unconditionally grateful for the support of our funders and community partners in ensuring our network and our students thrived in a year that was anything but normal.

FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF OUR FAMILIES My name is Duana Brown, I am a parent at Caliber Beta Academy. My son is O’Mari Brown Ford and he is currently in the fourth grade. He has been here since Kindergarten and I am so excited that he continues to be at Beta Academy. I can say that when the Caliber Community was established in Richmond in 2016, they surrounded everyone with love. I remember getting sick and receiving text messages and pictures from his Kindergarten teachers, which warmed my heart. I knew that Caliber was the type of school to embrace everyone and make sure that each child is their best self each and every day. Caliber has been amazing with not only supporting my son, but all students and families. During COVID they had a “Treasure Chest’’, which provided household and hygiene products to families and the community at Caliber. This was amazing because a lot of families lost jobs and wages during the pandemic. The school constantly checked in and texted me during these times Caliber is always there. They have always been about community and all about the students. All of the teachers have wanted to build relationships and get to know my child for who he is. They also take the time to get to know me in order to support my child emotionally and academically. It’s all about the partnership! The only way to build community is to be on the same page. During online learning, I noticed that O’Mari was reading a lot more into the content of his books and actually understanding it as opposed to just reading the words. We are currently reading 6th8th grade books, which are above his grade level! We are both having fun together. Returning to school was really hard for me, especially since the pandemic continues to be something we live with day to day. I think that the relationships I built with administrators and other staff helped reassure me that my son would be okay and that Caliber is taking the precautions to keep the students and my child safe.

STUDENT OUTCOMES Distance learning had a significant impact on all aspects of student learning and emotional well-being. These impacts were felt in different ways across our student population. The outcomes on this page show some of the highlights and pain points in our data as we ended our extended period of distance learning. In particular, our younger students were more adversely affected by distance learning, while our older students continued to grow and excel.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING OUTCOMES Students are surveyed in the fall and spring of every year to gauge their Social-Emotional well-being and growth. The tool we use for social-emotional well-being assesses students on categories including; Self-management, growth mindset, perseverance, curiosity, self-efficacy, self-awareness and social competence. Amidst a year of distance learning we were happy to see that our students social-emotional well-being as measured by this tool either improved or stayed consistent from Fall 2020 to Spring 2021. The data below are school averages on the surveys. The average for survey participants across networks who took this survey was 3.6.

OUR GOAL IS TO OFFER A CALIBER HIGH SCHOOL OPTION TO ALL OUR FAMILIES Expanding through twelfth grade will allow us to offer an education focused on the whole child to our oldest students, while ensuring our students are academically prepared to choose their post-secondary path. Our work over the next five years will involve engaging in partnerships and securing new charters, as well as designing and implementing our high school model. This model will integrate a collegeready academic program with strong social-emotional supports. We will also need to prepare to support our high school students as they make their post-secondary choices. Our current hope is to open our own Caliber High School in Vallejo and to partner with an existing high school in Richmond so that all of our students have a high school option that continues our focus on restorative justice, emotional development and rigorous academic outcomes.
