Today she comes home back slouched, chin down, and the hug she gives me is not as full as it usually is. It’s fine, I think. I just have to give a little more than I usually do and for a second she looks happy. I ask her what is wrong and she sighs. She tells me that she is in default in her student loans so she doesn’t qualify for financial aid. She will either have to go to a school she can’t afford without financial aid or not go at all. She is teary eyed now and we both know she can’t go. I thought that hard work will get you anything, get you anywhere but no matter how hard you work, you need money to succeed and looking at my mom I realize this. I am hurting too now because when the star you look up to at night starts to fade, even just a little, you do too.
