Resource Environmental, Inc. (Resource) is an environmental remediation company specializing in the abatement of asbestos, lead in paint, toxic mold, and other hazardous/ regulated building materials. Incorporated in 2005, the company has taken on

projects ranging in size from a few thousand dollars to more than $1 million. They engage in all forms of contract work including lump sum, cost-plus, time-and-material, maintenance-and-operations and emergency response. All work is self-performed.

in building and construction and the past 15 years strictly in demolition. Since joining Resource, he has been instrumental in bringing several substantial projects to the company, including major jobs in San Diego County, Orange County and LA County with
a large project coming up on Terminal Island. Resource currently has 20 plus jobs going on at this time ranging from $50,000 to $700,000. One of Resource’s more challenging and one of their most high-profile jobs to date was recently completed in July 2016. The job called

for the demolition and abatement of the two-story 200,000 sq. ft. AT&T Western Region Data Facility in Anaheim. The abatement portion of this job began in February 2016 and included the removal of asbestos flooring throughout the building. Resource then brought in four skid steer loaders and gutted the entire interior, before going to work on the steel structure and concrete façade. Resource was tasked with taking the building down to rough grade to make room for a new industrial building. The actual external demolition began in March 2016 and was completed at the end of June 2016. According to Sausedo, the job was fairly typical, but it did have its challenges. “We excavated the oversized footings out of the ground and processed them with Komatsu 360 excavators equipped with NPK GH15

8,000 lb. hydraulic hammers,” says Sausedo. “The concrete was very hard and this is where having the proper equipment comes in. Our Komatsu’s made quick work of the 12’ x 12’ footings. We also utilized Komatsu PC240LC-10 and PC210LC-10 excavators with NPK GH10 hydraulic hammers throughout the jobsite.” Sausedo says that all of the concrete, steel, copper and other recyclable materials were processed on-site. “The concrete was crushed, processed and utilized on the job site as erosion control and fill material, while the other materials were trucked off to local scrap yards,” says Sausedo. “The scrap value was of course built into this project and only the roofing material and miscellaneous interior trash went to the landfill, making this a very efficient and sustainable job overall.” Sausedo points to and credits Dave

Villafona (Pepe), Resource’s superintendent on this job, for the successful completion of this project. “Pepe and his entire crew deserve great praise for how they handled this project. Everything was by the book with safety as the number one concern,” says Sausedo. “We have a great team that includes five estimators, a tremendous office staff and operators and other crew members that are second to none. This is our true advantage.” Resource, has experienced tremendous growth and although they previously chose to rent heavy construction machinery as needed, they recently concluded that it was time to purchase some of the equipment that they use most often. to the quality and productivity you get with Komatsu equipment and our operators are also very comfortable operating this brand,” says Sausedo. “They are just great machines, put together well with no seams in the booms. Plus you can’t beat the power and productivity and they came at a very competitive price.” The company did own and operate four skid steer loaders but added four Komatsu’s in 2016, including two PC360LC-10 80,000 lb. hydraulic excavators, a PC240LC-10 60,000 lb. hydraulic excavator and a PC210LC-10 50,000 lb. hydraulic excavator. “We have a Komatsu for any size project and we will continue to add machines as our workload calls for it. It is a universal piece of equipment that we can use on projects large and small,” says Sausedo. “We also

have all of the attachments necessary to get the job done right, including breakers, shears, pulverizers, thumbs and buckets.” Resource, is growing at such a rate that they realize the need to only do business with reliable vendors that will keep them up and running at all times. “We deal with Road Machinery and our sales representative, Andrew Brown, and they have already proven their worth after the sale,” says Sausedo. “While working on the AT&T job in Anaheim, one of our attachments malfunctioned. We called Road Machinery that afternoon and they were out on our job site at 5 a.m. the following morning getting the attachment back up and running by the start of the workday. Now that’s great service. It is comforting to know that we can call on Andrew Brown and anyone else at Road

Site Solutions Services Demos Schuyler Heim Bridge in Long Beach By Brian Hoover The Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge was constructed from 1946 to 1949 by the U.S. Navy and named in honor of Commodore Schuyler Franklin Heim, who was commanding the Naval Operating Base on Terminal Island in 1942. Better known as just the Schulyer Heim Bridge, this structure served as one of three bridges connecting Terminal Island to the mainland where Wilmington and Long Beach intersect. The bridge was a part of Route 47 and crossed over Cerritos Channel, allowing tugboats, sailboats, and other vessels to pass underneath. Recognizable from afar by its green color and unique profile of two cross-braced steel towers suspended by cables, the bridge was deemed structurally obsolete and seismically unsafe a few years back. In addition, the bridge could no longer keep up with the growing traffic demand and was also struggling to provide the adequate clearance necessary for all sizes of passing ships. The state of California (Caltrans) was responsible for the operation of Schuyler Heim Bridge and consequently they are overseeing its replacement. Construction began in late 2011 to replace the bridge with a four-lane fixed-span bridge, scheduled for completion in 2017. This

new $180 million bridge will run three-quarters of a mile and rise five stories above the Cerritos Channel, providing ample vertical clearance. MCM Construction, Inc. is the general construction firm selected to perform both the new construction and demolition of the Schuyler Heim Bridge. They subcontracted the demolition of the bridge structure to Site Solutions Services out or Irvine, who serves as an operated equipment rental company that specializes in demolition. Site Solutions Services began their demolition efforts in November 2015 and completed the task in April 2016.

Site Solution Services’, Tom Spencer, was the superintendent overseeing all operations of the demolition of the Schuyler Heim Bridge. “We were tasked to remove the span deck and the lift stand to the nearest pier on each side of the bridge. This ultimately included the removal of two 200’ standing towers, as well as disassembling the machine room, all the gear mechanisms, and all other operating features,” says Spencer. “We also demoed two massive channel weights that were utilized as counter weights in the raising and lowering of the bridge.” Spencer goes on to explain

that these 800,000 lb. counter weights were jacked down and lowered to the ground by a specialty contractor over a 24-hour period. “The weights were around 11-feet high and 80-feet long and constructed

with a truss assembly core and encased in concrete,” says Spencer. Site Solution Services crews utilized 7,500 lb. UB breakers mounted on Hitachi 250 and Cat 330 excavators to break up the counter weights,
followed by UB shears to cut the inside steel core. According to Spencer, the 200’ towers were constructed of “I” beams that were encased in ¼ inch steel wraps. The bridge was all steel

constructed and the higher you went, the smaller the steel beam would become. The towers were, of course, demoed from the top down starting at the roof. “We opened up the roof and entered and disassembled the machine room that contained gears and sheaves that weighed as much as 65,000 pounds,” says Spencer. “These fixtures had to be cut into thirds and craned out with 200-ton cranes provided by MCM.” Site Solution Services then proceeded to cut up and demo the flat bridge section itself,

which was made of steel and steel grate and extends from the center stands in both directions. “We cut these up into 12’ x 25’ sections utilizing shears and torching crews and loaded everything into 40-yard dumpsters and high side trucks.” According to Spencer, this demolition project represented one of the more challenging jobs he has had the privilege to be a part of. When asked what the most challenging part was, his answer was simply, “all of it.” “We had crews working 200 feet in the air and we built

platforms 100 feet up and placed 80 foot boom lifts on these platforms. The demolition process was carefully engineered and carefully followed and the jobsite was fully secured at the end of each day, leaving no hazard behind,” says Spencer. “Patience and safety were key and there was simply no place for complacency. I am proud to report that we were able to complete this project from start to finish without any reportable incidents and that is, in my opinion, our biggest success [ Continued on page 16 ]

on this project.” Spencer goes on to explain a few other challenges that his crew faced daily. "We had to remain conscientious of so many obstacles, including the continuous congestion and fast moving traffic on one side, and a fully-operational train track/bridge on the other," says Spencer. The high winds were also a big issue, causing our crews to cease operations from time to time. I am very proud of our crews and the fact that they were able to finish on time and without any major issues." A great deal of the tower work was accomplished by hand with torching crews and the steel was craned down to ground level. The heavy machinery included

excavators, skid steers and a long list of attachments, including breakers, shears, processors, buckets, and thumbs. “The heavy machinery and demo attachments were utilized primarily in the first two to three weeks on the job, with a whole lot of torch work from that point on,” says Spencer. “We used the excavators equipped with shears to cut up the trusses. We had as many as four excavators and two skid steer loaders on-site on any given day and once the bridge was separated, we had the equipment and torch crews working as mirror images on each side.” Site Solutions Services was basically responsible for disassembling and demolishing anything green

on the bridge. Caltrans owned the rights to all of the salvage, including the steel and this was purchased and trucked out by SA Recycling. At the time of its opening back in 1942, the Commodore Schuyler F. Heim Bridge was the highest in the country at 186 feet tall above the roadway deck and 236 feet when measured from high water level. It proudly served its purpose for more than 70 years, ushering countless cars and trucks, ships and boats safely to their destinations. The new bridge will soon be open to traffic and although it may not have the same charm and character as its predecessor, it will be more sound and able to handle the daily punishment of today’s grueling traffic loads. MORA’S EQUIPMENT & CONSTRUCTION Performs 7,000 Plus Feet of Trench on Caltech Pasadena Campus By Brian Hoover
David Mora Sr. originally started his company back in 1998 as Mora’s Trucking & Equipment, after working as a heavy equipment operator for a respected Southern California underground company for nearly 20 years. “Our children were approaching college age and we needed to find a way to finance that, while also maintaining our way of life,” says Mora. “We took our best shot and it has paid off in more ways than just financially.” Mora started out with just a used Chevy 10-wheeler dump truck that he used to haul dirt and other materials for his previous employer, SE Pipeline, as well as anyone else that needed his services. After just six months, David sold his dump truck and purchased a used Case 580 Super L backhoe; trading that in a year later to purchase his first brand new Case Super M backhoe. As an operated equipment rental company and part of Southern California’s Local 12 International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE), Mora now specializes in trenching and underground construction for everything from footings to pipelines and all other underground utilities. Mora’s Equipment & Construction is a family business in every sense of the word as the entire family is involved in the venture. This includes David’s wife, Dee Dee, and all three of their sons, David Jr., Jason, and Ricky. David Jr. joined the business in 2001 after gaining some basic experience working for other construction companies. Like his father, David Jr. started out driving a dump truck, but after a few years, he decided that he wanted to be an operator. “I decided to

David Jr. went about this during his minimal amount of spare time, and in 2008, he acquired his Class A License, allowing the company to pursue additional work such as road construction, demolition, curb and gutter and even structural construction. It was at this time that the company changed its name to Mora’s Equipment & Construction, Inc. David Jr. now serves as the company’s vice president, while his brothers, Jason and Ricky serve as officers in the family business. Jason Mora joined the family business in

2006 after receiving a business degree from Cal Poly Pomona in order to help his father grow the company to new levels. Jason has been instrumental in his efforts to secure several major accounts for the company, and now serves as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in charge of overlooking all financial matters for the business. This includes billing, payroll, vendor checks, equipment financing, insurance, dispatch and overseeing the entire office staff. Ricky Mora came to the company in 2004 when he was just 18 years old and he has been operating equipment ever since. According to David Jr., he is very good at what he does and is trusted with the most sensitive and challenging jobs. Ricky also works on and oversees all of the contract

jobs for Mora’s, as well as coordinating with the mechanics and maintenance crew to keep the fleet at top performance. Southern California Gas Company and SE Pipeline remain Mora’s largest customers, however, they also perform excavation work for oil companies, electrical and plumbing contractors, as well as homebuilders. Currently, they are on a long-term project for PPC Construction at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, where they are digging a trench for the placement of new chilled water lines used to cool some of the 125 buildings located on campus. The previous lines were evidently experiencing bottleneck and flow restriction issues and new lines were necessary to eliminate the

choke points. This is all part of an ongoing central plant expansion that began a few years back in an effort to upgrade the entire cooling system and better serve the several million square feet of campus buildings. According to David Jr., there are actually two separate jobs/contracts going on at Caltech right now for PPC and Mora’s Equipment and Construction. “The larger of the two began back in September 2015 and it is being completed in four phases,” says David Jr. “We are digging five thousand lineal feet of nine-foot wide by 14-foot deep trenches so that PPC can install two 26” chilled water lines side by side in various locations.” According to David Jr., the 26” steel pipe was being installed under tunnels that were originally built in the 1920s as a corridor for students to make their way around campus. These tunnels are now used to house and protect the university’s underground utilities. The infrastructure is old and fragile and Mora’s Equipment & Construction had to take extra care in excavating anywhere near these structures. The smaller contract began in April 2016 and this job includes the excavation of two thousand lineal feet of trench at a width

of 13 feet and a depth of 12 feet. “PPC is placing 36” chilled water lines in this singlephase project and all of these chilled lines will eventually lead to a large cooling tower that feeds AC units for buildings on campus. Everything should be wrapped up on both projects by the end of the year,” concludes David Jr. Mora’s Equipment & Construction is also currently working out at as many as 30 locations right now, including a very similar job out at CalState Northridge for PPC Construction. Mora’s is currently performing a great deal of gas line excavation for SE Pipeline right now throughout Southern California. They currently have five machines out on the Caltech job, including two Case excavators, a Case backhoe, and a Case skid steer loader. In all, Mora’s Equipment & Construction has 12 full-time operators, 16 tractors plus saws and heavy haul lowboy trucks. They recently purchased three new pieces of Case equipment, including a CX55B Mini Excavator, a CX80 Mini Excavator and a TV380 Track Skid Steer from Sonsray Machinery. backhoe fleet is made up of Case 590’s and 580’s. NEW GENERATION CAT® MOBILE SHEARS FOR LARGE EXCAVATORS SPEED PRIMARY DEMOLITION AND SCRAP PROCESSING The new Cat® S2000/S3000 Series mobile shears, designed for hydraulic excavators working in scrap and demolition applications, feature optimum force-to-weight ratios that yield faster cycle times and more cuts per hour, compared with predecessor models S340B, S365C, and S385C. Built with added strength and jaw protection features, the new models can be boom or stick mounted and are available in both straight (S2050, S2070, S2090) and 360-degree rotating (S3050, S3070, S3090) configurations. DSRM Cable Construction, Inc. (DSRM) was established in 1994 by Dan McNulty in order to serve cable and phone companies throughout Southern California. They have built a reputation as a visionary company, dedicated to developing, building and maintaining state-of-the-art HFC telecommunication networks, with the most advanced engineering, designs, construction, and technical services available. Part of DSRM’s day-to-day activities requires that they open asphalt roadways in order to repair or maintain existing communication utilities. Patch and paving work is necessary after the job is completed and good reliable rollers are needed to compact the new asphalt surface. DSRM recently purchased their first HAMM roller from Nixon-Egli Equipment Co. “We have depended on Nixon-Egli in the past as a parts supplier for our asphalt grinding equipment, so when the need for a roller arose, we decided to take a look at what they had to offer,” says McNulty. After reviewing the competition and comparing features and options, DSRM decided on the HAMM HD 12 Tandem Roller. “First off, these rollers are comfortable and easy to operate, especially with the ergonomically optimized driving positions that are available,” says McNulty. “We were also impressed with the excellent visibility, low profile positioning, high compaction force and low center of mass.
