Grading, Excavating and Underground Utility Contractor Continues to Grow Demolition Business with the Addition of New McCloskey I54V3 Impact Crusher and 190S Screen Plant By Brian Hoover, CMS, Senior Editor he origin of Kip Construction Services goes back to 1978 when Chris Kip began framing houses and building custom homes in and around Los Angeles County. Eventually, Kip acquired an A license and began taking on the grading and excavating duties on his jobs, adding heavy machinery to the fleet whenever possible. Grant Kip joined his father’s business full-time in 2000 immediately after graduating from high school. He was already familiar with much of the daily duties after working part-time for his dad in one capacity or another since the age of 12. The company was incorporated in 2010, and Grant Kip now serves as the owner and president of the family business. “My father is still active in the business, and he helps out with contract work and other internal administrative duties,” says Kip. “I learned most everything I know from my dad, and I will work hard to assure that this company lives up to and continues the reputation for excellence that he established almost 40 years ago.” Kip Construction Services, Inc. specializes in challenging grading & excavating and underground utility projects throughout Southern California.

While earthwork continues to be their mainstay, they also have a crushing division that has grown significantly since its inception in 2008. “We recently purchased a new McCloskey I54V3 impact crusher and a new McCloskey 190S screen plant to keep up with all of the crushing work we currently have on our books,” says Kip. “I think the next five years are going to be very busy for our crushing division. We currently have around 400,000 tons of concrete to process on a job in Santa Clarita, a 100,000 tons in Oxnard and a large project for LA County where we are crushing boulders down to an inch and a half base material.”

Kip Construction Services, Inc. initially got into the crushing business in November 2008 when they took a job cleaning up and demoing material left behind after the devastating Sayre (Sylmar) fire that destroyed hundreds of mobile home residences at the Oakridge Trailer Park, nine single-family homes, 104 outbuildings and 10 commercial buildings. They crushed and processed all of the concrete on-site and then graded

and compacted the area for future construction. “While on this particular project, we quickly learned that at $300 a load, it is much cheaper to crush the material before taking it to the dump or recycle yard,” says Kip. “We learned a lot from renting the crushing equipment for this and many other projects. After experimenting with various brands, we found that McCloskey offered the largest and most productive portable plant for our particular purposes.” According to their online brochure, the McCloskey I54V3 is designed to be the most productive horizontal impact crusher in the sub 50-ton class. It is built around a 47” x 53” four-bar impactor chamber with a 37” x 53.5” feed opening. The

nine cubic yard hopper feeds the crusher over a double-deck pre-screen that removes the majority of the fines in advance. All of this is powered by a 430hp C13 ACERT CAT engine, ensuring ample power and Tier III emissions compliance. It should be noted that Chris Kip and Kip Construction Services did the original grading on the Oakridge Community project back in the late 80s. In May 2017, Kip Construction Services, Inc. will be starting the third phase of grading for the Oakridge project. “This is going to be a two-year commitment for our company, and we are already removing trees at this time. In May, we will begin doing the grading, underground

utility work and street improvements on this project that has proven to be such a big part of our company’s growth over the years,” says Kip. “We have a couple of other big projects coming up soon, including a large grading and

underground utility project for a school in Palmdale where we will be moving several hundred thousand yards of dirt, as well as mass grading on a new subdivision in Fountain Valley. It looks like the next five years are going to be very busy, full of housing, infrastructure, big grading jobs and a tremendous amount of crushing and demolition work. We are very much looking forward to a bright future here at Kip Construction Services.” Kip Construction Services, Inc. has a large fleet of heavy machinery, and according to Grant Kip, their utilization is close to 100 percent. “We have around 35 pieces of heavy machinery in our fleet with only two machines in our yard at this time,” says Kip. “Our equipment is either out on one of our jobs, or it is being rented on a bare or operated basis to other contractors. Keeping our assets out in the field working is key to our future growth and success.” According to Grant Kip, the company’s equipment fleet is made up of primarily Caterpillar equipment. From D8, D6, D5 and D4 dozers to Cat excavators, backhoes and wheel loaders, Kip Construction Services owns and maintains a full

line of Caterpillar machines. “We go with Cat for almost all of our equipment offerings, however when it comes to rock trucks, we have decided to go with Volvo. We own a Cat 631 scraper, but because so much of our work in on steep hillside projects, we have phased out much of its use in favor of using our excavators and rock trucks. I say this in general, but we are at this time considering the purchase of another 631 scraper for a mass grading job that may be coming up this spring,” says Kip. “Because our utilization is so high, we have found it necessary to rent the machinery we need to keep our jobs going smoothly. We have built a great relationship with Heavy Equipment Rentals (HER), and they provide us with the machines we need on not only our projects but also for re-rent purposes. They have one of the largest fleets in Southern California, and we have been fortunate to have such a good working relationship with our representative Bob Buff and HER owner and president, Kent Porter. It’s like having a partner in our business, and we help each other out quite often.”

All rental companies are not created equal, at least that seems to be the sentiment of Steve Cross, general manager of Vanguard Equipment Rentals out of Orange. “Anyone can buy, stock and rent construction equipment, it is the people that make the difference,” says Cross. “The focus should always be on the rental customer, and that is what separates Vanguard Equipment Rentals from the sea of other rental equipment companies.” When you call Vanguard Equipment Rentals (Vanguard), you will almost always be greeted and served by either Steve Cross or Fernando Castillo, who together have more than 45 years of experience in the rental industry. Steve Cross has learned the equipment rental business from the bottom up, starting out his career at the rental counter, before moving to sales and then on to management. He has built a reputation in the industry for reliability, and his regular customers have come to depend on him as

an integral extension of their business. Fernando Castillo gained most of his experience working in the dispatch and operations management part of the business. He knows the workings of the rental industry inside and out and is also very experienced on the trucking side as well. Both Steve and Fernando attribute their personal success over the years to putting the customer first. “Our main focus is the customer and making sure they receive the right equipment for the job and that their rental experience is nothing less than exceptional,” says Cross. “We see the job through from start to finish and if we don’t have what a customer needs, then we will find it or refer them to a reliable rental source capable of meeting their specific needs. precisely what they need to get the job done right and promptly.” Although Vanguard Equipment Rentals does rent to homeowners and the general public, their niche and focus is supporting the general engineering construction industry. “We work primarily with contractors who utilize heavy construction equipment for grading, pipeline, underground utilities, concrete construction and other ground down projects,” says Cross. “We also offer a long line of high reach equipment from scissor, boom, and man lifts to scaffolding and ladders.” Vanguard Equipment Rentals has an impressive inventory of machinery and attachments including multiple skip loaders, backhoes, a dozen wheel loaders, water trucks, full size and mini excavators, track

and rubber tired skid steer loaders, as well as a full line of compaction equipment. They offer a variety of brands including John Deere, Case, Cat, Bomag, Hyundai and Kubota, and 85 percent of their inventory has been purchased brand new within the last six months. “We live minute by minute in this business, and we need to be working with equipment dealers and manufacturers that get it,” says Cross. “We choose our equipment based on our customer's feedback. Service and parts availability are also critical to our success, as is price quite frankly.” Cross has established a good working relationship with several equipment distributors in Southern California, and they chose to work with these dealers, not just based on price and availability, but also on dependability. “Mike Valentine at Sonsray Equipment, our local Case dealer, is a good example of what we are looking for from a construction equipment company,” says Cross. “Mike is responsive

and knowledgeable, and he knows that it is all about utilization and dependability. When I call for equipment or an attachment, or even if I just have a question, he recognizes the urgency and responds accordingly. This type of support is what we need from our suppliers so that we can, in turn, take care of our customers with the very highest level of service.” Both Steve and Fernando have worked for the mega-rental
companies, and they have learned valuable lessons from this experience. “I have nothing bad to say about the huge rental conglomerates that came out of the consolidation some 20 years ago, but I do see the benefits of being a smaller, privately owned rental equipment business,” says Cross. “Relationships and trust are everything in our industry, and I believe that Vanguard Equipment Rentals is situated to serve Southern California's

rental client base better. We simply have more flexibility, and there is no corporate office to answer to that may or may not know exactly what is going on out in the field. We are empowered here at Vanguard to make decisions and do what is right for our customers. There is no, ‘let me get back to you,' here at Vanguard.” Cross points out that although he and Fernando have brought years of experience to Vanguard Equipment Rentals, it is the other dozen employees and their attitude and dedication that have made the difference. “From our five full-time mechanics that keep everything serviced and in top condition, to our entire customer support staff, everyone is on board with our philosophy to keep the customer as our number one priority,” says Cross. “I want to thank everyone who works here at Vanguard for going the extra mile, each and every day. Linda Spear is our CFO/ Controller, and she oversees the financial and administrative end of our business. She handles everything from cash flow and

insurance to billing and compliance, and we are so very fortunate to have her and employees like her working here at Vanguard.” The rental equipment industry has grown by leaps and bounds over the past 20 years, and Steve Cross has been there to see the pros and cons of this evolution. “We are in an era of tremendous technological advancements with the addition of things like GPS and computer programs that can track everything from utilization to service and maintenance reports. If an engine is running too hot out in the field, we are informed in real time, providing us with the opportunity to be proactive,” says Cross. “There is also a downside to these enhancements. Equipment is more complicated and therefore harder to work on and maintain, but overall I think we are better off. ”Anyone who has dealt with Steve Cross knows that he will entertain renting or selling almost anything at any time. “I will help one of our customers purchase an 80,000 lb. excavator

Mass Excavation/Grading & Demolition Contractor Finds the Right Balance Between Owning and Renting Heavy Construction Machinery By Brian Hoover, CMS, Senior Editor enneth (Kenny), William (Billy) and Robert (Bobby) Hayden established Hayden Brothers in 1975 as a family business developed to serve the general engineering construction industry in Southern California. For 22 years, these three brothers operated a successful general engineering construction business performing everything from mass grading to concrete/ asphalt and underground construction work. The trio was eventually disrupted when Bobby was severely injured in an accident and consequently made the decision to leave the family business. After endless thought and deliberation, Kenny, Bobby and Billy decided to shut down Hayden Brothers, but continue doing much of the same type of work under the name, Triangle Enterprises, Inc. (Triangle). The company

was officially established in 1997 with Kenny serving as the president and co-owner and Billy taking on the position of Vice President and coowner. They also resolved to simplify their business by focusing almost exclusively on mass excavation/grading and demolition/clearing work. “In the past, we did a lot of subdivision work, along with building streets, sidewalks, curb, gutter, as well as drainage, sewer main and storm drain construction,” says Kenny. “These days we do all forms of earthwork but are probably best known for our mass grading and large export jobs. We decided a long time ago that we would stick to what we do best." As an example, Triangle recently completed two 100,000 cubic yard plus mass excavation-export projects; one

in downtown Los Angeles and one in Irvine. They perform most of their work for commercial and industrial clients, but they also bid and work on public works projects for agencies like the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works. They are currently performing flood control work in Los Angeles and recently began two other public works projects within the City of Santa Clarita. Triangle is doing another public works job currently in Manhattan Beach, specifically the Mira Costa High School Phase 4 project. The company has been involved with this project from the very first phase, and they are now doing grading work for the athletic fields as a part of Phase 4 construction. “We began phase 4 in November 2016, but with all the rain the moisture content has been three times

over optimum, and this has slowed things down a bit on the job,” says Hayden. “We have a couple of weeks left on this job, and we will get back to it as soon as the weather dries up.” By jobs end, Triangle will export approximately 10,000 yards of dirt on this project, and recompact up to 5 feet of earth over a +/- 5-acre area. “Although we are not doing the utility relocation work on this project, we do have to be careful not to disturb any of the existing water, gas and electrical lines scattered throughout the job site,” says Hayden. “We have worked closely and labored side by side with the underground utility contractor, Bali Construction, which has helped us keep the job site as productive as possible while avoiding damage to utilities during our mass grading.”

Triangle has another challenging project coming up for the City of West Hollywood that requires some unusual techniques. “This will be a complex job where we will most likely be exporting and then reimporting thousands of yards of earth using a conveyor belt system instead of trucking it out and in,” says Hayden. “The conveyor system will keep the truck traffic off the city streets, and make for a safer and cleaner operation on this job that is located on city property. We will be working intermittently on this multiple phase project for three or four years.” Although Triangle uses scrapers from time to time, they move most of the dirt on their projects using excavators and articulated dump trucks. They currently own around 20 pieces of heavy machinery, but most the equipment they
use on job sites is rented. “We probably rent 90 percent of our equipment from Heavy Equipment Rentals in Los Angeles,” says Hayden. “We have also purchased several units from Heavy Equipment Sales, including, most recently, a new Hyundai (480LC-9A) 110,000 lb. Excavator, a new Hyundai (HX235) 63,000 lb. Compact-Radius excavator and a new Hyundai (HL940) wheel loader. We have built an excellent relationship with both the sales and rentals divisions of HER over the years, and we are fully confident in their ability to take care of our needs.” Ken points out that they rented the Hyundai machines from Heavy Equipment Rentals before officially making the purchase. “We work a lot with B. Buff, Heavy’s greater Los Angeles branch manager and our sales representative, George Davis.

We also keep in contact and meet with Kent Porter from time to time, and I have to say that it is comforting to know that the owner of an equipment sales and rental company takes this kind of interest in their customer’s welfare.” Kenny makes it clear that although his company does buy equipment from time to time, it is only when the utilization of a particular machine has become so high that it just makes more sense to own it. “We prefer to rent our equipment because it keeps our exposure and general overhead controlled. We don’t have to be concerned with overhead, breakdowns, wear parts, or major maintenance and repairs,” says Hayden. “Our only responsibility is daily maintenance like greasing and fueling, and this keeps our focus on the job where it belongs,

instead of on the equipment.” Triangle is currently renting several machines from Heavy Equipment Rentals on the Mira Costa High School project, including a Komatsu D-155A dozer, an articulated rock truck and an 84” vibratory pad foot soil compactor. Triangle Enterprises, Inc. currently has around 40 employees with 35 working each day out in the field. “My wife, Patty, is our corporate secretary and she does an incredible job keeping the office running smoothly. My brother, Billy and I both have a son working for the company, and we have two nephews who are also working very hard here as well. We are a family oriented business, and we have an excellent team going right now. The biggest reason for our success really is our excellent

OCTA AWARDS $1.2 BILLION CONTRACT FOR I-405 PROJECT
Set to open in 2023, improvements will reduce travel times by adding one regular lane in each direction, along with the 405 Express Lanes toll facility. ORANGE – The Orange County Transportation Authority’s board of directors today selected OC 405 Partners to design and construct the I-405 Improvement Project, a major step in the agency’s effort to speed up travel times for roughly 370,000 daily drivers between Costa Mesa and the Los Angeles County line. The project, set to begin construction next year, includes adding one regular lane in each direction – as promised in Measure M, Orange County’s halfcent sales tax for transportation improvements – and building the 405 Express Lanes in the center of the freeway. “Awarding this designbuild contract is a significant milestone,” said OCTA Chair Lori Donchak. “We look forward to breaking ground on the single largest project OCTA has undertaken. The I-405 is one of the busiest highways in the nation and we want to make it easier for the millions of people driving through this area.” OC 405 Partners is a team of firms led by OHL USA, Inc. and Astaldi Construction Corporation. Other major projects by the firms include the I-15 Corridor Reconstruction Project in Utah and the SR-826/836 Interchange Reconstruction Project in Florida. The contract awarded for project design and construction is $1.2 billion. The project is the first in the state being built using the designbuild authority provided under Assembly Bill 401 by Assemblyman Tom Daly, passed in 2013. AB 401

provides authority for regional transportation agencies and Caltrans to use the design-build method of project delivery on state highway projects, resulting in cost and time savings. “The I-405 Improvement Project has been an unprecedented joint effort between OCTA, the California State Transportation Agency, Caltrans, the Federal Highway Administration, state legislators

and local cities,” said OCTA CEO Darrell Johnson. “After many years of hard work and dedication from multiple individuals and agencies, I am excited to see the start of the project’s design and construction.” The OCTA board also approved a toll operating agreement with Caltrans at today’s meeting to address matters related to the design, construction, maintenance and operation of the 405 Express

Lanes. The 405 Express Lanes will be the first project in the state to use the tolling authority provided last year under AB 194, authored by Assemblyman Jim Frazier. This authority is key to ensuring that operations, funding and investment decisions for the express lanes respect local planning and funding priorities. The total I-405 Improvement Project cost is $1.9 billion and will be funded with a combination of local, state and federal funds. OCTA is currently pursuing a federal TIFIA loan to fund a significant portion of the project. In addition to constructing the new lanes, the project will rebuild 18 bridges and improve freeway access and traffic on
local streets. All of this work is critical to accommodate expected employment, population and housing growth in not only Orange County, but throughout the region. Traffic on I-405 is anticipated to grow by 30 percent in the next 25 years. The 405 Express Lanes portion of the project is being modeled after the successful 91 Express Lanes, owned and operated by OCTA. With the 405 Express Lanes, solo drivers will have the choice to pay a toll to speed up their commute. Carpools of two or more people can use the 405 Express Lanes for free for the first 3 ½ years after opening. Cars with three or more people will use the express lanes for free at all times.
The 405 Express Lanes adds an option for drivers traveling through the area. Funding additional lanes with tolling creates the opportunity to move more traffic through the region, improve speeds and enable people to get where they are going in a predictable amount of time. In 2040, it’s expected to take 29 minutes to travel during rush hour from SR-73 to I-605 in the regular lanes. That commute can be cut down to 13 minutes if a driver chooses to take the 405 Express Lanes. Without the project it would take 2 hours and 13 minutes to travel that stretch of freeway in the regular lanes or 2 hours in the carpool lanes. Cc
