Mayor: 2014-2015, 2018-2019, 2022-present
Mayor David Shapiro has served on the Calabasas City Council since January 25, 2012 and served as the Mayor from 2014-2015, and a second term as Mayor from 2018-2019. He is currently in his third term as Mayor which began in 2022 and will end in 2023.
Shapiro serves as a City Council liaison for the city’s schools on School Site Safety as part of the School Area Traffic and Safety Committee, and is School and PFC Liaison for the City Council.
He also serves on the Emergency Preparedness, Public Safety, and Communications Committees for the City. Mayor Shapiro has served on the Budget Committee for the past eight years. He is also a representative on the Clean Power Alliance (CPA) working towards providing renewable and clean energy throughout the City of Calabasas and beyond Mayor Shapiro was a member of the Senior Task Force to help design and build the Calabasas Senior Center.
Mayor Shapiro was recently reelected to the Regional Council for Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), representing our COG cities. Shapiro also has served on a SCAG committee for CEHD for the past six years, working on many issues including housing, transportation, sustainability, and has been reelected to leadership of SCAG. He has served on the Valley Economic Alliance Board of Governors for over 14 years.
He was also recently reappointed to an eighth year to the League of California Cities Policy Committee, addressing statewide issues of housing, homelessness, parks, and children. Mayor Shapiro supports philanthropic causes and served as the Captain of the City of Calabasas Relay for Life Team for eight years. He supports several other philanthropic organizations, including being an honorary member of the Calabasas Rotary Club, Habitat for Humanity, Cordasco Something Yellow Foundation, Loving Home Hospice for Children, and Golden West ALS
Prior to being elected to the City Council, Shapiro served as President/Chair of the Calabasas Library Commission for six years and helped to design the library. As President/Chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission for six years, he helped open five parks in the City and brought forward the Joint Use Agreement with our schools.
He was on the first two Civic Center Advisory Committees that helped develop and design the Calabasas Civic Center and Library, served as a Board member of the Joint Powers Authority for the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center for 12 years, and was Vice-President of the Community Center Alliance for over 11 years.
Mayor Shapiro spearheaded the formation of the Mayor’s Youth Council in 2019 in order to enable youth, ages 14-21, to learn and lead within our city Shapiro also led the charge to open the veterans garden in 2019 to honor and remember all those who have and continue to serve.
Shapiro has coached youth sports including basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer for over 16 years. Shapiro, an accomplished attorney, relocated his practice to Calabasas shortly after moving to Calabasas in 1994.
Mayor Shapiro and his wife Barbara have three children all who attended local schools.
