Artist to Watch: Movits!

They’re known

for luxury sedans, affordable home furnishings, meatballs and fantastic health care. Now Sweden is trying to make its mark in a new field: swing/jazz/hip-hop fusion. With their first CD “Äppelknyckarjazz” released in 2008, the Movits! are raising their profile stateside and proving that Swedes can rap too. The group’s record sales have jumped recently following their performance of “Fel del av gården” on the wildly popular Colbert Report. Members Johan Rensfeldt, Anders Rensfeldt, and Jocke Nilsson say they found inspiration from Benny Goodman’s “Sing Sing Sing,” and hope to bring back an old-school jazz brand of hip-hop that the music industry seems to be lacking. -Alex Palombo

Heather: Yeah, we’re super excited about it actually. It seems like a really nice venue. Cake: How has the tour been going? Heather: It’s been good. You know, it’s tour. Cake: How was SXSW? They went over well, which is encouraging for the tour.

Cake: You guys did a song with The Friendly Fires. How did that come about?

Cake: What are some of your favorite things Heather: I think they just got in touch with us and asked us to put our voices on their song. I about touring? think it was that simple.

Heather: I guess it was much different in Heather: I would love to hear Björk do “ A Violent the production of the album. The writing Yet Flammable World.” process was similar, in that we wrote the songs how we always do. We all bring in Cake: That would be cool. If you could have a a seed of an idea of a song and all work super power which one would you pick? together on it, or we completely collaborate from the very beginning and jam on a song Heather: Definitely flying. We worked with a new producer Cake: Do you have any advice for starting musiTom Monahan, who really helped us to cians? create the lush warm sound that we were trying to get with the first two albums. Heather: I guess just listen to yourself. Ask a lot There’s just a lot of trial and error. Kind of of questions because people are really, really like, we finally got it right thanks to Tom. Cake: You guys released this on your own label, do you like that kind of control? Heather: Definitely, we get every last decision; when it comes to artwork, or deadlines or who we work with, who we hire to do our press, everything. Every little decision is ours, which is good because we have a lot of friends on labels and they’ll complain a lot about how the label is giving them a hard time about the artwork or didn’t really promote them well enough... With us, we don’t have to deal with any of that stuff because we hire everybody.
