SUMMER EVENTS AT CADOGAN HALL Cadogan Hall’s current Zurich International Orchestra Series ends in June as the Dresden Philharmonic and its conductor Michael Sanderling give a series of three concerts accompanied by pianist Freddy Kempf. The new Zurich season is listed on pages 30-31 and full details and tickets for these concerts will be available from 12 June. The BBC Proms are back this summer with Monday lunchtime Chamber Music concerts and Saturday Matinees, full details are on pages 18-23.

Jazz is a prominent feature in Cadogan Hall’s summer programme. On 4 June award-winning vocalist Tina May captures the magic of Edith Piaf in a special centenary celebration. On 14 June The Glenn Miller Orchestra pay tribute to Frank Sinatra and on 16 July Jacqui Dankworth and Charlie Wood get together to give a unique concert of duet arrangements celebrating a century of song. This year’s summer musical stars Denise Van Outen in a concert version of Sweet Charity, along with West End theatre stars Kimberley Walsh, Kerry Ellis and Michael Xavier. With fabulous scores performed by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, dancing and chorus from Arts Ed Ensemble, Cadogan Hall’s summer production promises to be the best one yet.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Dvorˇák Cello Concerto Ravel Mother Goose Suite Stravinsky The Firebird Suite (1919) Natalie Clein cello Rory Macdonald conductor Stravinsky’s The Firebird was an instant success with audiences and critics. Premiered in 1910, it marked the beginning of a collaboration between Stravinsky and ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev, as well as Stravinsky’s ascent to fame. Equally as popular with audiences is Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, which was first composed for children and now exists in various orchestral and chamber forms, from orchestra to piano duet. Esteemed British cellist Natalie Clein joins the orchestra to perform Dvorˇák’s Cello Concerto – a work beloved by audiences and performers alike, it remains one of the most popular concertos in the cello repertory.

The LGMC is no ordinary choir; it seeks to entertain, educate and inspire through song. With over 200 members, it is the largest gay choir in Europe and performs a diverse range of music to the highest technical standard. Its performances combine well-known (and a few lesser-known) songs with choreography and surprises to make every show something special for the audience.

Cho-Liang Lin violin José Serebrier conductor Prior to the composition of his Slavonic Dances, Dvorˇák was a relatively unknown name, but with the immediate success of the first set of Dances, characterised by fiery Slavic rhythms and exuberant melodies evoking the Bohemian spirit, his international career was launched. By successfully combining the aesthetics and sound possibilities of Eastern and Western music, Xiaogang Ye has earned worldwide recognition for works such as The Last Paradise, heard tonight with violinist Cho-Liang Lin. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition never fails to impress, from the trumpet’s first noble statement of the main theme to the glorious finale, The Great Gate of Kiev.

He also encountered Handel’s oratorios for the first time and, upon returning to Vienna, immediately began work on The Creation. The libretto, based on the Book of Genesis and Milton’s Paradise Lost, had been compiled for Handel but not used by him. It was translated into German, Haydn set it to music, and then the English was written back into the score, thus creating the first bilingual choral work. It was immediately popular in both Austria and England and has remained so ever since.

Handel’s Water Music accompanied George I along a royal excursion down the River Thames in 1717 and the suites have become firmly engrained within British culture ever since. Later during the 18th century, Haydn enjoyed a lucrative spell in the nation’s capital – particularly with his 12 ‘London’ symphonies, the last of which adopted this nickname. Few composers have evoked the English countryside more distinctly than Vaughan Williams – The Lark Ascending being one of his most idyllic portrayals of pastoral themes.
Mahler Symphony No. 5 Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 1 Paul Daniel conductor Naufal Mukumi piano English conductor Paul Daniel, currently Principal Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Galicia, has performed with leading orchestras throughout the world. Tonight he conducts Mahler’s magnificent Symphony No. 5 and Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra. From the opening trumpet solo and the funeral march, to the exquisite ten-minute Adagietto of the fourth movement, Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 is grand in scale and depth and the excellent acoustic of Cadogan Hall provides the perfect setting to hear these large orchestral forces. To complete the programme, rising star Naufal Mukumi performs Rachmaninov’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1 following his winning performance in the Trinity Laban Soloists’ Competition this year.

A superb quartet of soloists joins Kingston Choral Society, Londinium and the Thames Sinfonia to scale one of the greatest of all choral summits. Verdi’s searingly dramatic Requiem, once described ‘as an opera in ecclesiastical robes’, spans a breath-taking range of colour and emotion. From the thrillingly ferocious Dies irae to the touching simplicity of the Agnus Dei, this will be an unforgettable occasion.
Iran’s Kayhan Kalhor and India’s Shujaat Husain Khan reunite in London to continue their Persian and Indian collaboration. This highly influential group has toured the world over to critical acclaim and is praised for creating an original, delicate Indo-Persian fusion blending their two distinctive classical music traditions: the Persian dastgah and North Indian raga and instruments: the kamancheh and sitar. Intertwined historically, geographically and culturally for centuries, these musical styles share some formal elements and modes which allow for exquisite and harmonious dialogue between the two traditions. One of London’s most popular choirs presents three choral classics. Carmina Burana is a work of many moods and colours: a thunderous opening, exuberant rhythmic choruses, lyrical melodies and ravishing solos. Whitacre’s tender love songs are performed in his setting for choir, violin and piano. Joubert’s anthem is an Anglican classic. A lively Mozart Violin and Piano Sonata completes this vibrant programme.
To mark the 2015 Mexico-UK Year of Culture, violinist Tasmin Little joins one of Mexico’s finest orchestras, bringing a colourful programme of music from England, Spain and the Americas for their debut tour of the UK. As well as familiar pieces by Gershwin and Vaughan Williams, it includes the Classic FM Hall of Fame favourite Danzón No. 2 and Conga del fuego. The performance ends with the riotous and uplifting Huapango, known in Mexico as their ‘second national anthem’.

Will Todd Mass in Blue Classic popular songs from the Great American Songbook
Junior Trinity, Trinity Laban’s Saturday music department for young people, presents its end-of-year celebration and Prizegiving Ceremony.
Mark Forkgen director/piano Nina Bennet soprano Will Todd’s upbeat setting of the Latin Mass for choir, solo soprano and jazz ensemble reflects his ‘double life’ as a classical composer and jazz musician. Written in 2003, the Mass in Blue is a brilliant fusion of pure jazz and blues with clear, strong choral writing, against which the piano, soprano and alto sax weave and blend in a delightful aural tapestry.
This showcase of large ensembles features more than 200 students aged 10 – 19 in choirs and orchestras including Wind Orchestra, Four Part Choir and Symphony Orchestra, with soloists selected from final-year students. Come and hear a range of music, from the sacred to the light-hearted, performed by these exciting young musicians.
In the second half of the concert the choir, soprano and quartet present a selection of favourites from the Great American Songbook.

The award-winning vocalist Jacqui Dankworth is joined onstage by her husband, acclaimed American pianist-vocalist, Charlie Wood, plus a stellar group of jazz musicians, for a unique concert of duet arrangements celebrating a century of song.
Unique in Europe, the National Youth Harp Orchestra has 30 of the most talented harpists from across the UK. They regularly perform at prestigious events and venues; most recently at the British Embassy in Washington DC at a reception for the Clinton Family.
Inspired by some of the great musical partnerships, such as Ray Charles & Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald & Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington & Billy Strayhorn, George & Ira Gershwin, Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway and James Taylor & Carole King, this concert features numbers including Alone Together, Autumn In New York, It Don’t Mean A Thing, A Foggy Day, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, You’ve Got a Friend and other favourites.
All styles of music are explored in their concerts, from classical and celtic, to contemporary and film scores. The world-renowned harpist Marissa Robles has praised their ‘simply beautiful and passionate playing’.
It is no surprise that Jacqui Dankworth has become known as one of the finest British singers of her generation. Daughter of Dame Cleo Laine and Sir John Dankworth, Jacqui’s musical pedigree is in no doubt.

One of Bach’s best-loved works, the Double Concerto for Two Violins, opens this evening’s programme in a concert commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 expresses profound emotions both poignant and noble, performed by the estimable Pinchas Zukerman, who also leads the orchestra tonight as conductor. Brahms lived his life as an intense perfectionist and spent at least 14 years sketching, writing and re-writing his First Symphony. The result was grand work of the finest quality, a triumphant masterpiece worthy of ending tonight’s concert, which recognises the courage and endurance of the Armenian people.
Joshua Bell joins the orchestra for the final concert of the London season. This bright and energetic evening of music begins with Vivaldi’s Concerto for 4 Violins, which sees Joshua performing with three of the Academy’s finest violinists, truly showcasing its orchestra of soloists. The audience then has the opportunity to see Joshua direct one of the Academy’s most loved pieces, Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings. The concert ends with a fittingly sultry sign off from the orchestra for the summer with Astor Piazolla’s evocative Argentine rhythms. Joshua’s interpretation is sure to make this piece a new favourite.

The Cardinall’s Musick returns to the BBC Proms with director Andrew Carwood to launch a major new project: the Tallis Edition, aiming to throw new light on the music of this most lyrical of English polyphonists. As well as a selection of the composer’s liturgical music, the concert includes his extraordinary 40-part motet Spem in alium, in addition to the world premiere of a new tribute to Tallis by British composer Cheryl Frances-Hoad.
In this concert celebrating composer Pierre Boulez’s 90th-birthday year, Boulez’s music will be performed alongside Wanderlied, by Boulez’s French-American contemporary Betsy Jolas, and music by two composers new to the Proms: Shiori Usui and Joanna Lee.

Mozart Quintet in E flat major for piano and winds, K452 Christian Blackshaw piano Royal Northern Sinfonia Winds After many years away from the limelight, pianist Christian Blackshaw has recently returned with a series of recordings that have established him at the top of his profession. This lunchtime he is joined by the Royal Northern Sinfonia Winds for Mozart’s Quintet for piano and winds, paired with anniversary composer Nielsen’s Wind Quintet. Mozart’s Quintet is a charming affair, described by the 28-year-old composer as ‘the best thing I have written in my life so far’, while Nielsen’s – which was influenced by Mozart’s – is a showcase for the different tones of the five wind instruments, a distinctive blend of contemporary and neoClassical gestures.

He makes his BBC Proms debut in a recital that puts Beethoven’s final piano sonata at its core. It’s a work that blends extrovert passion with a depth that characterises all of the composer’s late works, and is paired here with Bartók’s Piano Sonata, a piece strongly coloured by Hungarian folk melodies and rhythmic attack. We mark the centenary of Scriabin’s death with his most famous piano sonata, the ‘Black Mass’ – a disconcerting, phantasmagoric musical journey and a gleeful vision of horror. Jeremy Denk returns in Prom 60 to perform Henry Cowell’s iconoclastic Piano Concerto.

Eminent Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja joins the Emerson String Quartet for its Proms debut in a programme of great chamber works of the 20th century. From France, there’s Debussy’s ‘Feux d’artifice’ – a display of technical and aural fireworks for solo piano. From the Emerson’s native America there’s the original string quartet version of Barber’s hauntingly beautiful Adagio for strings, and Russia is represented by Shostakovich’s popular Quintet, with its darkly comic Scherzo and meditative, delicately melancholy Intermezzo.
When not performing as a soloist, violinist Nicola Benedetti appears frequently as a chamber musician – most often with the trio she co-founded with pianist Alexei Grynyuk and cellist Leonard Elschenbroich. Here the three musicians pair Brahms’s first and stormiest piano trio – its darkness belying the work’s major key – with music by American-born composer Arlene Sierra. Inspired by the migration patterns of butterflies, her Butterflies Remember a Mountain is a work of pointillist detail and shimmering harmonies, painted in a sequence of delicate textural gestures.

GETTING TO CADOGAN HALL The easiest way to travel to Cadogan Hall is by public transport. Located two minutes walk from Sloane Square Tube, served by District and Circle lines, just one stop from Victoria station which has both mainline and additional Tube connections. Sloane Square Underground Two minutes walk Upon exiting Sloane Square Station, turn immediately right, passing the Royal Court Theatre. (You will see Cadogan Hall’s tower immediately before you). Cross over Cliveden Place and walk up Sedding Street to the Hall. Bus Sloane Street one minute walk Frequent bus services stop in Sloane Square and neighbouring streets including King’s Road, Sloane Street and Lower Sloane Street. Bus services include numbers 11, 19, 22, 137, 211, 319, 360 and c1.

Free companion / Assistance scheme Cadogan Hall has a range of services to assist disabled customers including provision for wheelchair users in the stalls. Customers in receipt of disability-related state benefits, and members of our Access Scheme, may be entitled to concessionary ticket prices for some events or a free companion seat. Please contact the Box Office for a form to register for Cadogan Hall’s Access Scheme.

Concessions and student tickets Where general concessions are available this is defined as under-16s, full time students, senior citizens and persons out of work. For availability, please call the Box Office on 020 7730 4500. Group discounts Cadogan Hall offers generous discounts for groups of six or more. Discounts vary according to event so please call 020 7730 5744 for further information or to make a group booking. Data Protection When making a booking your details will be recorded on to our database and may be used by Cadogan Hall and our associates to inform you of forthcoming events. If you do not wish to receive this information please inform the Box Office at the time of booking. Conditions of sale Please note that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded. Only one discount is available per booking. Children under five will not be admitted to Cadogan Hall except for family shows, where children over the age of one must have their own seats. We reserve the right to remove children from the auditorium if they are not well behaved. Price band structure reflects the level of comfort and clarity of view. We regret we cannot guarantee unrestricted view at all times due to the varying nature of performances.
Wheelchair users If you use a wheelchair and wish to transfer to a seat, we regret we may not be able to provide a member of staff to help you physically. However, we will arrange for your wheelchair to be taken away and stored. A lift is located to the right once inside the Box Office reception allowing access to a lowered Box Office counter. Foyer areas are on the same level as the Box Office and the foyer bar (Oakley Room) is accessed via a wide access lift. Seats within the stalls are accessed via a wide lift as are adapted toilet facilities. The Gallery Please note the lift provides access to all levels except the gallery seating areas. Gallery seating can only be accessed via the main stairwell. When travelling to and from the gallery seating areas please allow sufficient time in order to be seated at an appropriate time. Customers with hearing requirements The auditorium is fitted with an infra-red amplification system. This is not the same as a Loop System so switching your hearing aid to ‘T’ is not sufficient. Please contact a member of staff on arrival to be given an amplification aid. Customers with sight impairment Guide dogs are welcome to access the hall and auditorium but please do let us know prior to arriving at the hall so we may make any special arrangements if necessary. We produce CD versions of this brochure. To request a free copy please call the Box Office and ask to be added to our regular lists. ‘Touch / Familiarisation’ tours can be arranged and we have unisex accessible toilets on all levels except the Gallery.
